The clinical staff in ABMU neonatal unit delivers an in-house programme of study known as the NEST programme (Neonatal Enhanced Skills Training programme). This comprises of eight intensive taught days which forms part of the blended learning approach used to support the Post Graduate Certificate in Enhanced Neonatal Care.

The post graduate certificate in Enhanced Neonatal Care enables students to enhance their knowledge and understanding, as well as clinical skills, in areas such as venepuncture and blood gas analysis. Underpinning theory and knowledge pertinent to the care of neonates is demonstrated through the development of a portfolio of evidence and accompanying narrative.

NEST is an eight day intensive clinical programme which is delivered by staff in ABMU Neonatal Unit. Enhanced Neonatal Care students are expected to attend all eight days and then complete supervised practice to achieve defined clinical skills. Each student will need to identify a suitable clinical mentor who can support learning in the student’s clinical environment and assess clinical competence. The Post Graduate Certificate in Enhanced Neonatal Care course involves completion of two 30 credit work based learning modules which are assessed via completion of a portfolio of evidence which demonstrates underpinning knowledge, learning and mastery of associated clinical skills. Attainment of the Post Graduate Certificate is through attendance of the eight taught days, submission of the two module portfolios and competence based assessment in clinical practice of the integrated clinical skills.

Academic facilities

The Clinical Skills Centre at City offers excellent facilities for you to rehearse practical caring skills prior to your practice placement. You will have access to a simulated 6-bedded high dependency unit (HDU) with realistic equipment including piped oxygen, call bells, medicines and emergency equipment. In addition, medium fidelity simulators and laboratories, including a biology laboratory, will allow you to rehearse skills in preparation for practice in a range of placements, including clinics and people's homes.

The School of Health Science is one of the first health schools in the UK to open a Technology Enabled Care Studio, City TECS. City TECS is specially designed studio flat at our Northampton Square campus, fully equipped with the latest telehealth and telecare technologies, providing you with the unique opportunity to learn how to use the latest and future healthcare technologies whilst you study.

Teaching and learning

The programme is taught by academic staff from the School of Health Sciences, supported by clinical colleagues. Most of the modules are worth 15 credits (or 1\8 of the total programme). However, some modules are worth 30 credits.

A range of teaching and learning strategies are used, depending upon the nature of the material; these will include lectures and small group tutorials, group work, simulated practice and visits.

Assessment

The assessments are equally as varied, and will include course work, online projects, invigilated examination and practical examination.

Your dissertation is worth 60 credits (1\3 of the entire programme) and is a piece of research undertaken with the supervision of an academic member of staff with a special interest in your topic. They are appointed by the programme director or the module leader.

Overview

Our course aims to explore the health of women and children from a global public health perspective. Students will explore individual health issues, both physical, psychological and social that commonly affect women and children, and also explore the wider political and societal issues that impact these.

Women and children, both in the UK and around the world, face inequality on a daily basis. These inequalities come from lack of access to healthcare, education, employment opportunities, technological advances, legal support, and social, cultural and political opposition (Marmot, 2010). The World Health Organisation has recognised this and explicitly targeted women and children in three of its Millennium Development Goals; to promote gender equality and empower women; to reduce child mortality; to improve maternal health, alongside wider goals to improve universal access to education and to eradicate poverty that also disproportionately affect women (WHO, 2015).

This course focuses on the health of women and children. During their ‘core’ modules, students will be encourage to explore individual health issues, as well as exploring the global legislation that impacts on women’s and children’s health, and understanding how they can implement and influence policy change. The option modules will allow the student to tailor their learning to their individual practice; whether caring for the critically unwell women, doing a physical assessment of a new-born infant (NIPE), understanding the global impact of responsive parenting or as an effective leader or manager of a service.

Careers

This course will utilise a global public health perspective and is aimed at all practitioners who work with women and children, so will appeal to students both in the UK and internationally. It will offer an inter-professional learning opportunity to a range of professionals including Midwives, Children’s Nurses, Health Visitors, Hospital and Community nurses, Family Support Workers, but is also suitable for those who work with women and children in the voluntary sector or education. The course will be taught by a range of experienced lecturers from a variety of clinical backgrounds. Please be aware that this course is aimed at practitioners working in some capacity with women’s and children’s health and does not lead to a registerable qualification with the Nursing and Midwifery Council in the UK.

- Global Challenges to Women and Children's Health:
This module is designed for an inter-professional audience, and has a global public health focus, considering issues affecting women and children around the world. It is designed to provide insight and exploration of the major public health issues affecting the health of women and children. Each of the main areas explored will include an overview of the illness/problem as well as consideration of the social, cultural and political context and influence upon it and evaluation of how this leads to inequality and may reduce life chances.

- Research Proposal - Women's and Children's Health:
This module provides a critical overview of research philosophy and the major methodological and design approaches to research in order to equip you to appreciate the strengths and weaknesses of published research, whether in your specialist area or in the health, welfare and social care field.

- Political Power and Policy Drivers affecting Women and Children's Health:
As part of everyday inter-professional practice, practitioners working with women and children are affected by policy drivers in a number of ways, however, differences may be apparent in how these are translated to healthcare and how they are embedded into practice. Implementing new policy requires practitioners to use their, power, influence and interpersonal skills. The module will enable the student to critically evaluate their own knowledge and skills which underpin their current practice.

- Postgraduate Major Project:
The Major Project, which is central to the Masters award, enables students to demonstrate their ability to synthesise learning from previous modules and use this learning as the basis for planning, conducting and writing up a research or work-based project. This project provides the opportunity for students to demonstrate: the ability to raise significant and meaningful questions in relation to their specialism; depth of knowledge which may involve working at current limits of theoretical and/or research understanding; critical understanding of research methods and its relationship to knowledge; awareness of and ability to develop solutions to ethical dilemmas likely to arise in their research or professional practice; the ability to draw meaningful and justifiable conclusions from information which may be complex or contradictory; the capability to expand or redefine existing knowledge to develop new approaches to changing situations and contribute to the development to best practice; the ability to communicate these processes in a clear and sophisticated fashion; the capability to evaluate their work from the perspective of an autonomous reflective learner. - Applied Leadership & Management:
This module provides an innovative exploration of leadership and management in healthcare, and examines their impact on organisations including wider considerations in the external environment. This module will enable students to assess and analyse the roles that leaders and managers play in a range of organizational contexts; and to apply the principles and techniques of leadership and management in a range of contexts.

- Care of the Critically Unwell Woman:
This module will enable you to develop in-depth knowledge and skills when caring for the critically unwell woman, during the child bearing continuum. Work-based learning is incorporated into the module in order to recognise and value your professional expertise. While practicing midwifery in an area where women with high dependency needs will be cared for, you will also spend clinical time developing your skills in the high dependency or intensive care unit.

- Newborn Infant Physical Examination (NIPE):
This module will focus on the specialist knowledge and the clinical skills that are required to enable you to competently undertake a thorough Newborn and Infant Physical Examination (NIPE) in clinical practice. You will utilise in-depth knowledge and understanding that you have gained to enable you to recognise the deviations from the normal to initiate appropriate care and referral. Critical reflection and completion of the practice documents will allow you to further identify your learning needs and develop your scope of professional practice.

- Global Impact of Responsive Parenting:
This module is designed to examine the positive health impact responsive parenting has on the mother and infant dyad, the wider family, society and the Globe. Historical child rearing styles will be reviewed and debated to highlight their negative effects on child development and on society. The module will explore the current understanding of neurophysiology of infant brain development and how parenting interactions can affect this process. The module will conclude with positive practical steps for health professionals to encourage responsive parenting with the parents they work with every day.

Assessment -

You will have the opportunity to demonstrate your learning in a variety of ways during this course. Assessment will vary between modules, but includes patchwork text, reflective essays, action plans, reports, objective structured clinical examinations (OSCEs), essays, ‘journal style’ articles (to prepare you to publish your work) and a major project on a subject of your choice.

Clinical psychology focuses on the challenges faced by people with clinical, mental or physical (neuropsychological) health conditions. The role of the clinical psychologist is to work with these individuals and attempt to improve their quality of life. The Master’s degree in Abnormal and Clinical Psychology at Swansea is designed to equip students with an advanced understanding of the theory and practice of clinical psychology in healthcare settings. The primary purpose of the Abnormal and Clinical Psychology course is to allow students to gain knowledge and experience to enhance their suitability for professional clinical training (i.e. a three year DCl in Clinical Psychology programme at a BPS accredited training centre; see http://careers.bps.org.uk/area/clinical).

Entry onto a clinical psychology doctorate training programme is extremely competitive, with candidates usually expected to have acquired training and experience beyond degree level. This graduate entry master course enables science graduates to become registered pharmacists. It will provide you with a comprehensive theoretical base, including chemical, biological, physiological, pharmaceutical and pharmacotherapeutics studies.

In this course you’ll complete two additional study periods over the summer period, as well as two usual semesters each year. The first study period is an intensive six-week training program involving 30 hours weekly contact and continuous assessment. In this period you’ll be introduced to important concepts in pharmaceutics, pharmaceutical chemistry and pharmaceutical practice.

The rest of your first year will focus on pharmaceutical science, pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmacology and pharmaceutical practice. At the end of your first year you’ll complete a community pharmacy placement under the supervision of a practicing pharmacist to develop skills in the clinical setting.

In your second year you’ll focus on pharmacotherapy and develop research skills. You’ll also complete a hospital placement to cement your practical skills.

The role of the pharmacist within community pharmacy has expanded to include assisting patients with the management of their chronic diseases, such as obesity, asthma and diabetes. In the future, pharmacists in the primary care setting are going to become increasingly involved in the care of patients through multidisciplinary teams. The setting of practice of pharmacy will expand from the community pharmacist to include medical clinics and the patient’s home. The role of pharmacists as prescribers is currently under investigation.

Within hospitals, pharmacists provide a diverse range of services from drug distribution and dispensing, provision of drug information and education, through to ward-based clinical pharmacy services where they participate in patient care as part of a team. Hospital pharmacists may also engage in quality assurance programs and clinical research.

Consultant pharmacists provide medication management review services. They work in collaboration with patients and their doctors to ensure the patient achieves the best outcomes from their drug therapy. Such pharmacists work in aged care facilities and/or patients’ homes.

Graduates may also develop a career in the pharmaceutical industry which employs pharmacists in a number of areas including research roles in the development of medicines, production of pharmaceuticals, quality assurance, regulatory services, marketing and drug information.

Graduates may also work for the State or Federal Government in regulatory and policy roles.

This unique postgraduate course is concerned with the practical application of legal and ethical knowledge as well as the fundamental concepts and theories of law and ethics. It provides you the opportunity to examine your own practice in relation to the legal and ethical framework with specific emphasis on enhancing patient care and delivering excellent service.

This course provides you with opportunities to study selected legal and ethical principles which have immediate relevance to dental care and practice. At the Postgraduate Diploma stage you will have a chance to study how the law is made and the links between law, morality and human rights. This is followed by exploring the concepts that shape your understanding of management and leadership for staff and organisational development in the dental practice context.

The scope of social work research is equally broad and requires researchers to be aware of, and able to engage with a variety of disciplines in a range of settings, often working alongside those with different ideas of what social work and social work research are and what each is intended to achieve.

Social work research, in other words, does not simply concern the work of social workers. It may also be concerned, for example, with programmes of community development in the context of poverty or interventions to tackle domestic violence and programmes for young offenders. It may focus on the needs of a particular group, for example children with disabilities or people with severe and long term mental illness, whether or not they receive social work services. It may draw on theories and research methods from any of the social sciences, including economics, law and philosophy.

The programme is delivered through a combination of intensive block teaching and weekly delivery so as to be most accessible to postgraduate students, busy policy professionals and practitioners. ABOUT MA DRAMA AND MOVEMENT THERAPY (SESAME)

The MA Drama and Movement Therapy is an intensive course providing professional and vocational training in drama and movement therapy and the Sesame approach, and is approved by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).

The course offers a particular pedagogic approach to learning the craft of dramatherapy, which is underpinned by Jungian psychology and the importance of practice-based learning. The combination of intensive movement-based studio practice, collaborative facilitations, seminars, and a shared research unit with other MA students creates a learning environment that encourages personal exploration, collaboration and critical reflection. Particularly in the first term, there is the opportunity for immersive practice in the key subject areas of Laban movement, myth, movement with touch and sound and drama. This is allied by study into key psychological concepts, which can inform the theories and practices of dramatherapy. The group process is central to the student experience and supported by a weekly session across the first three terms that explores interpersonal dynamics between members and draws from group analytic theory.

PLACEMENTS

The placements are at the heart of the training and begin in the second term with the hallmark apprenticeship model. This offers well-supported early clinical practice with a specialist and qualified supervisor working alongside groups of two or three Students in different placement settings. All apprenticeship placements are arranged by Central and will normally include working with adults with mental health problems, elderly clients with dementia, people with learning disabilities, children
with challenging behaviour and people on the autistic spectrum. The apprenticeship model is used for placements in the spring and summer terms. In the extended fourth term, students will work more autonomously and have the opportunity to specialise
their clinical practice. All placement work is closely supported throughout the course through group and individual supervision.

All graduates are eligible to apply to the Health and Care Professions Council for membership as an arts therapist (drama).

A higher degree by research involves training in research methods and a laboratory based high level scientific investigation. The nature of the work and the time it takes to finish the research means a research degree is demanding and needs great commitment.

Your research takes place with the Biomolecular Sciences Research Centre (BMRC). The BMRC has been established for over 15 years. We have over 40 postgraduate students enrolled on MPhil/PhD programmes, as well as a number of postdoctoral research assistants. This provides an active and stimulating research environment.

Whilst studying, postgraduate students are encouraged and supported to present their latest research findings at national and international conferences as part of the BMRC. You must present your results in a thesis, explain the methods used in your research and defend them in a viva voce examination.

To get an MPhil you must critically investigate and evaluate an approved topic and display an understanding of suitable research methods. For a PhD you must also make an independent and original contribution to knowledge.

BMRC staff work in collaboration with UK and international scientists as well as clinical colleagues at a number of UK hospitals.

In the 2008 RAE Assessment, the BMRC was submitted under Unit of Assessment 12 - Allied Health Professions and Studies - which included 21 staff from BMRC and eight from the Centre for Health and Social Care. 65 per cent of the research in the joint submission was considered to be internationally recognised. When measured by the quality of its research and weighted by the number of staff submitted in this unit of assessment, Sheffield Hallam University was rated 16th out of the 42 post-92 universities who submitted (figure obtained from Research Professional). In terms of the publications submitted for consideration by the RAE panel, 75 per cent of these were of an international standard.

Evidence of the growth in research activity in the BMRC between RAE 2001 and RAE 2008 is the doubling of the number of staff returned in 2008 compared with 2001 and a three-fold increase in income. We currently have six postdoctoral researchers and 40 PhD students in BMRC, with 30 successful PhD awards being made during the period 2008-13.

Split MPhil or PhD options for international students

A split MPhil or PhD is a research degree programme for international students wishing to study from their home country university. You register for a Sheffield Hallam University PhD or MPhil degree and spend some time studying in Sheffield but are substantially based in your home country.

The balance of study between Sheffield Hallam and the overseas university is agreed between you and your supervisors, depending on the needs of your research programme, but will not exceed three months per annum in UK.

The course is suitable for clinical or social care staff who are currently employed in, or who desire to be employed in, a forensic setting or those settings where service users have forensic mental health needs.

This would include settings such as:
-Secure hospitals
-Prisons
-Ministry of Justice

-Community-based services for mentally disordered offenders
-Private/independent secure sector providers

In addition there is a firm commitment to similarly developing the place of practitioners on the programme. We are aware that this is unlikely to be a smooth progressive development, particularly given the competing demands on everyone's time and the problematic of tokenism and truly representative functioning of involvement on the programme. Nevertheless there is currently a very good level of service user and carer and practitioner involvement in the BA social work programme in all aspects and the MA programme will do likewise. The programme has begun a project with service users and carers to use their experience and knowledge in helping social work students learn about the service user experience and to attain knowledge and skills around interviewing.The programme will be contextualised within a commitment to anti-oppressive practice.

Students will be expected to critically reflect on themselves and others in relation to the experience of oppression. Students will be expected to develop effective anti-oppressive approaches to the provision of social work in a variety of practice placements and in the academic work on the programme.Students will be supported through an intensive level of personal tutor support that takes them through the programme helping them to negotiate both academic work and practice placement. The Masters programme will be a small group of around 20 students with personal tutorial support in groups of five. This will provide an environment within which students can grow and develop and where potential shortfalls in learning, both before, and during the course, can be identified and appropriately supported.

The social work team has worked hard to develop new and interesting placements in the voluntary and statutory sectors. In particular we have developed innovatory placements in the extended schools and children's centres in Wakefield. This will give students an opportunity to develop their skills and knowledge alongside other professional workers in line with the most recent workforce and practice developments predicated on the Every Child Matters Agenda and the Children Act 2004.This placement development will also make a contribution to the development of practice placements nationally in line with the university's knowledge transfer and research strategies via a funded evaluation of the work and regional and national workshops that will flow from it.

As a further development from this work the social work team are engaged with the delivery and evaluation of a knowledge transfer project that has received national government funding through the Innovation Unit, to develop the schools based workforce through the transfer of social work skills. Students will benefit through discussion and analysis of this in line with the university's strategy for research minded teaching and learning. In addition there will be a contribution to the development of the local economy and workforce also in line with the university strategy map.The MA programme will seek to develop the international agenda through internationalisation at home and in addition move towards a planned development of international partnerships and tutor and student exchanges in the future.

The Executive Masters in Public Administration (XMPA) aims to reflect changes in the public sector environment and changes in service provision, at a strategic level as well as critical analysis of Government policy. It supports the Government's commitment to provide lifelong learning and the skilling, training and development of public managers to achieve this. Further to reflect changes in styles of public management theory and practice and to recognise the changes in public administration and the requirements of managers for the skills and knowledge to manage cross sectorally, inter-sectorally.

The XMPA will develop your academic and vocational skills, equipping you for careers in the public sector and as a potential manager, able respond to an ever-changing and challenging environment. You'll gain relevant current knowledge, skills and understanding to enable you to work effectively given the changes in the public sector environment and in public policy.

- Full time and part time modes
- Membership of the Chartered Management Institute (CMI)
- Dual award – academic qualification from LSBU and professional award from the CMI (Level 8 Diploma in Strategic Direction and Leadership). Please note that direct entrants to year 2 will need to pay a mapping fee if they wish to register for the CMI award.
- Attendance of week-long International Summer School in conjunction with six other leading European universities offering comparable XMPAs

The teaching team on the Executive MPA was recently short-listed for the Prospects Postgraduate Awards in the category of 'best teaching team' by our students, and received a judges commendation, as a runner-up out of 150 teams.These awards celebrate excellence and development in postgraduate education. Our MPA programme has also been selected as an approved supplier by the Government Procurement Service as part of the skills framework.

Year 1:
- Leadership, Public Management and Governance
Creation of the public sector and the development of public management theory, principles and application of governance understanding leadership.

- Public Policy and the Managerial Environment
Development of public policy and its application within the context of a changing public sector environment and the effects of the political context.

- Managing through Critical Research
Research theory and the development of research skills and tools to undertake the dissertation. Understanding of how to develop a research proposal.

Year 2:
- Integrative Management and Change
Looking at change management theory and the management of change in a challenging public sector environment.

- Contemporary Issues for Public Managers
Highlights current issues facing public managers and specifically designed to be able to take up and respond to specific developments whilst retaining a core component.

Plus two of the following optional modules:
- Managing Within a Regulatory Framework
- Equality and Diversity in the Workforce
- Policy Making in Action
- Strategic Management in the Public and Not for Profit Sectors
- Public Sector Entrepreneurship
- The Practice of Management Consulting in the Public Sector

- Current Quality Issues in Health Service Management

Year 3:
- Dissertation
Research question of the student's choice and opportunity to develop this linked to public management and administration or policy.
Assessment is by course work, assignments, presentations and case studies. There re no formal examinations on this course and this is a deliberate decision.

Diploma in Management Studies

If you hold a Diploma in Management Studies you'll be accredited with 60 course credits and study the following modules:

- Leadership, public management and governance
- Public policy and the managerial environment
- Managing through critical research
- Dissertation

You'll also be required to attend the residential weekend and the International Summer School.

Employability

Types of careers:
The course is aimed at senior managers (and in this respect differs from the Master of Public Administration which is aimed at overseas students and those wanting to enter a career in public and social sectors). This course enables further career enhancement and development to more strategic levels, providing career sustainability and employability.

Former students have gone onto roles as:
- Director of Health and Social Care
- Strategic Director of Children and Adult Services
- Assistant Director of Education and Training

You can also progress onto the Doctorate in Business Administration (DBA).

Course participants receive a dual ward from the Chartered Management Institute - The Level 8 Diploma in Strategic Direction and Leadership. They become associate members of the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) and can access CMI services and publications. On successful completion of the XMPA course participants may be eligible to become Members of the CMI. Part of the assessment of the XMPA course contributes also to professional recognition and Chartered Manager status which course participants can continue on completion.

Teaching and learning

The course is taught using a variety of methods including individual discussions and tutorials, case study analysis, group and individual presentations, and individual logs.

At induction you'll receive support and advice from the Study Skills section, the Employability Unit, the IT training section and the Information Skills Advisor.
