Programme Structure

Our MSc in International Management is an intensive full-time programme lasting 12 months. The programme is divided into two 11-week semesters of taught content, and the summer period, where you can choose between a research dissertation and the practice track. The dissertation gives you an opportunity to undertake a substantive piece of independent research that matches your own academic interests. The practice track is designed to allow you to apply learned concepts and theories to the practical problems and issues of a company, and it will allow you to undertake a number of tasks, both working in teams and working individually.

In Semester 1 you will study four compulsory units and one optional unit. The compulsory units are:
-The Global Environment of Business (spans both semesters)
-International Business Strategy
-Cross-Cultural Management
-Analysing International Management

The optional units include: Business Ethics; International Relations Theories; Global Marketing; Entrepreneurship and Innovation; The European Union as a Global Economic Actor

For students with advanced understanding of a particular language, you can also choose a language module: French, German or Spanish, delivered by the University’s Foreign Languages Centre

Summer period

During the summer period you will be able to choose between two tracks: (1) dissertation track and (2) practice track. Both tracks allow you to demonstrate critical insight and reflective thinking about business/management/policy issues. The tracks also help develop your written and presentation skills, and your ability to develop effective arguments. All of these attributes are transferable skills relevant to the workplace and your future career.

Dissertation track

The dissertation track gives you the opportunity to do a piece of substantial work on your own, demonstrating originality, innovation, drive, and determination. The dissertation also enables you to plan and execute your own project, giving you complete choice and flexibility.

Practice track

The practice track allows you to undertake a number of tasks, both working in teams with other members of your cohort and working individually. The practice track is designed to allow you to apply learned concepts and theories to practical problems and issues, including a management problem which will be presented to you by an organisation. This track also provides opportunities for gaining practical experience in running team projects.

BMT Hi-Q Sigma to present Case Week Project

BMT Hi-Q Sigma, a Management Consultancy providing advice and insight across Government, Defence, Energy and Transport industries, will present a business problem to practice track students as part of Case Week in June.

You will then have two weeks to propose your own solutions to the problem, using the skills and knowledge gained during the programme, under guidance from your supervisors. The week will culminate with presentations to BMT Hi-Q Sigma.

About the Programme

This course aims to provide an opportunity to study intelligence and international security in an empirically grounded, practical and serious way, equipping students to apply these skills in related or complementary areas. The Intelligence and International Security course is specially designed to appeal to those working in security and defence communities, government ministries and related corporate sectors, drawn from domestic and international markets.

The course offers the opportunity to study intelligence and international security covering topics such as security, private security, corporate intelligence, government and policing, alongside general management such as management of skills, organisational behaviour and managing risk. Furthermore, the distinctive elements of the programme will add value to those who sit within emergency management roles and who wish to become informed about the security challenges present in the international system and possible intelligence-led responses to them.

The programme’s specific aims are to:
- Promote knowledge and understanding in the subject of intelligence and international security as a co-joined disciplinary concern.

- Provide advanced training where an opportunity is afforded for intelligence and security professionals to bring together professional expertise and growing academic abilities.

The programme represents a strong blend of the additional strengths of Loughborough University in approaching intelligence and international security from the strong foundations of the emergency management and crisis management and response strands that we have on campus. In doing so, it recognises the centrality of international imperatives, cooperation and coordination as a central feature of its programme design. The programme acknowledges and examines how intelligence and international security have become key issues in the lives of those engaged in operational and strategic management and indeed in business continuity. Alongside this, the study of intelligence has become a growing academic area of study over the last twenty years and the programme, which is designed and taught by internationally recognised experts in intelligence, security, risk, emergency and crisis management, offers a stimulating learning environment where academic and professional approaches to intelligence and international security are combined.

Structure

The programme runs over 12 months to 36 months depending on the qualification. There are three levels of qualification, each leading to the next – Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma and MSc.

Delivery

The individual modules are delivered in what is known as block format. So, as opposed to the usual style of university courses which are two or three hours of contact time per week over a ten week term, these modules are delivered in four full working days of contact time, with then guided study, tutor contact, and deliverables rounding the module off.

Students will be taught – via innovative teaching techniques about the cornerstone concepts and practice of intelligence, risk, and emergency. Students will be given the opportunity to be involved in hands-on crisis and emergency simulations in order to provide a comprehensive academic and professional training experience in the field of intelligence and international security.

The programme has a wide array of assessment methods to allow students to highlight the best of their abilities.

STUDY TRIPS

Students will take part in an international study trip of one week in one European Fashion Capital. They will have the opportunity to meet with leading industry professionals and visit companies in the fashion, design and luxury industries.

During the company visits students will work on a project relating to one of these industries and in alignment with their future career ambitions.

INTERNSHIP

Each student will undertake an internship of a minimum of three months in a company of their choice at the end of the classroom part of the program. The internship will contribute directly to the content of the Final Management Project and may take place anywhere in the world.

FINAL MANAGEMENT PROJECT

The second year of the program is dedicated to the Final Management Project which will be undertaken under the supervision of a GGSB professor.
Students will focus on a management aspect of the fashion, design and luxury industries; they are also encouraged to choose the subject of the Final Management Project in coherence with their future career goals. It is possible to complete the project in parallel with an employment or an internship in France or abroad.

FOREIGN LANGUAGES

Foreign language skills are essential in a globally competitive business environment. The program is taught in English, and no prior knowledge of French is required to attend the program. Students have the possibility of learning French or another foreign language such as Spanish or Chinese during the program.
This language component, although not compulsory, is highly recommended for students who intend to pursue an international career, since companies in the Fashion, Design and Luxury industry are currently recruiting personnel speaking the language of the country in which they are based, in addition to English and in-demand languages like Chinese or Russian.

You will complete a total of five units (including your dissertation) involving attendance of six or eight days for each unit. You will study several key topics covering areas of project management theory and methods, while gaining an insight into their practical application in a business context.

Project Environment and Planning: You will develop an understanding of the relationship between project and business management, as well as the project management environment and the factors that influence project outcomes. Strategic aspects of projects are addressed, including project selection and portfolio design. You will also learn how project managers must understand the benefits to be delivered by projects, the requirements of stakeholders and how to work within the constraints of cost, time and quality. Estimation methods and planning techniques are taught together with quality management. Approaches to the planning and control of projects that have been developed in different sectors are also covered, including agile methods and fast tracking.

Budgets and Commercial Management: This unit introduces you to raising project finance, building, monitoring and controlling project budgets and measuring Earned Value of project deliverables. It also covers the commercial aspects of procurement including tendering, contracting and the skills and practices of contract and bid negotiation, providing you with the tools and techniques for managing project budgets. The units also examines the key roles that project managers, budget managers and key project personnel play in managing project budgets.

People Management and Risk: This unit develops a critical understanding of individual, team and organisational working in order to deliver project goals successfully. It covers how individual characteristics such as personality, intelligence, ability and skills, motivation and attitudes affect individual performance. You will learn how to empower individuals and teams to achieve quality standards which enhance personal team and organisational performance, together with the development of creative and credible leadership. It also examines the key challenges in the application of risk management frameworks and models in project management, crisis management and corporate governance. Risk management strategies and the development of effective project mitigation and contingency action plans are critically evaluated.

Project Investigation and Systems Methods: This unit explores the investigation of project issues through the use of a structured research methodology and project management analysis tools to enhance the research process. Wider strategic issues are explored to place the research process into context and to illustrate how appropriate research methods can be identified for specific types of research problems. You will also look at tools for the modelling and analysis of complex problem situations (including systems thinking, soft systems methods and influence diagrams) and how these can be used to diagnose problem situations to identify relevant areas for further investigation. Project management methodologies including PRINCE2, Partnering and Programme Management as a wider context for project management research issues are examined. You will produce a research proposal that brings together the use of research methodology and project systems in identifying, justifying and investigating a research question that will feed into the research conducted in your final dissertation.

Dissertation: This unit enables you to deepen your understanding of an aspect of project management of your own choice. Many students choose to investigate topics which they intend to focus on in the next stage of their career. The unit is structured as a research project so you can demonstrate your ability to identify, design, plan and undertake research on a specific project management issue and effectively communicate your findings in an appropriate manner for a Master’s degree.

Programme Assessment

The units are structured as eight teaching blocks of three days of lectures, seminars and interactive syndicate work, with periods of self-managed study between blocks. Each of these will be assessed by coursework assignments. You will also produce a dissertation with guidance from a supervisor. The dissertation is structured as an independent research project to deepen your understanding of a chosen aspect of project management. Issues of intelligence have assumed increasing prominence in world affairs as analysts and policymakers attempt to assess the nature of new threats in the international system. Our programme will enable you to examine the nature, processes, roles and case studies of intelligence and their interaction with developments in international security.

In examining the trends that continue to shape intelligence and geo-strategic developments in the 21st century our programme offers a unique multidisciplinary approach based on the strengths of the department. We aim to provide a framework in which to understand the nature and role of intelligence in its relationship to wider issues in war and international security; an understanding of the processes, practices and institutions that have characterised intelligence in the modern era; an understanding of the problems connected with intelligence collection, assessment and ability to predict events in world affairs; and an appreciation of the particular ethical concerns generated by intelligence-related phenomena.

- Course purpose -

Our programme is for graduates and professionals with an interest in understanding the nature and role of intelligence. It is designed to have broad-ranging appeal if you are interested in pursuing graduate studies in intelligence and security studies. You will also find this programme of interest if you are a graduate in politics, history, international relations and strategic studies; if you have practical experience in the intelligence community and wish to reflect on the wider issues and implications of your experience; or are a professional in defence, diplomacy and foreign affairs.

- Course format and assessment -

Most of the 20-credit modules will be assessed by one 4,000-word essay or two 2,000-word essays. However, some 20-credit modules will be assessed on class participation and attendance, oral vivas or exams, or a combination of these.

Most 40-credit modules are assessed through a combination of essays (3,000-6,000 words), class participation and attendance, oral vivas and exams.

The dissertation module assessment will be on the research proposal (10%) and the dissertation (up to 15,000 words) (90%) for some programmes or solely on the dissertation for others.

Whilst this is not a vocational programme, students on our MA programmes have gone on to build careers in further academic research, NGOs, civil service, NATO, UN, media and publishing, finance and investment, teaching and the armed forces.

Teaching and learning

Much of the teaching on the course takes the form of interactive workshops, but there are also lectures from staff and visiting speakers. Lectures, discussions, role-play exercises and seminars are linked with selected case studies and assessments to strengthen your practical analysis and decision-making skills. You will have the opportunity to develop your skills in working as part of a team through structured group assignments.

Teaching staff at the Business School are researchers and/or come from an industry background with an in-depth practical experience of business and management issues. Visiting speakers from business, industry, consultancies and research bodies provide further input.

Approach to assessment

Assessment methods may include reports, seminar papers, formal written examinations, in-class tests, project work, visual and verbal presentations, workshops, simulations and practical exercises. Field trips

Taught by the internationally respected scholars of the Brunel Centre for Intelligence and Security Studies, backed up where required by practitioner expertise, the MA in Intelligence and Security Studies offers a unique opportunity for practical, policy-oriented graduate study of intelligence issues. Analytical Simulation Exercise - ASE is the jewel in the MA/ISS crown. It provides students with an opportunity to undertake a simulated intelligence analysis on a real-world subject. ASE is designed to emulate the interdepartmental assessment methods of the British Cabinet Office Joint Intelligence Committee, and gives students a chance to apply hands-on analytical principles and methods they have learned abstractly in the MA/ISS taught courses.

Dissertation: The final leg of the programme will be a supervised research dissertation of 15,000 - 20,000 words.


Brunel Centre for Intelligence and Security Studies:

Brunel Centre for Intelligence and Security Studies is Britain's first academic centre dedicated to intelligence scholarship and policy-analysis. It includes one of Britain's most innovative scholars in the field, Dr Philip H J Davies, as well as former CIA officer and noted scholar Dr. Stephen Marrin. Dr. Kristian Gustafson, an expert on Covert Action and military intelligence doctrine, is the current director of the programme. The former senior military imagery analyst, Geoff Oxlee, OBE, joined BCISS as an Honorary Fellow and completes the core team. Together, these scholars not only produce important original research, published world-wide, but actively contribute to the success of government and business in the UK.

The centre, though, is a an inter-disciplinary endeavour, and includes participation from some of the leading Brunel University academics in the fields of cryptography, computer networking, imagery, economics and even law. Many of these experts already assist our teaching. As well, the centre benefits from the assistance, from time to time, of various officials of Her Majesty’s Government. As a master’s student you’ll develop your research skills to a new and higher level. Your research supervisor will help you submit a proposal for your master’s dissertation or consultancy project which will be specific to the disciplines of logistics and supply chain management. You will then discuss its development with your supervisor through to completion in the final semester.

If you decide on a master’s consultancy project, rather than a dissertation, you’ll still undertake primary and desk research. Through your reading, reflection and research, you’ll be expected to show a deep understanding of the issues that are involved in the client brief.

MSc Marketing with Brand Management

The MSc Marketing with Brand Management is a specialist, 12-month full-time taught postgraduate course. The course offers students the opportunity to hone skills necessary to plan, manage and evaluate brand projects. This course provides a stronger focus on the specifics of developing and using brands and branding in the marketing context. All students will register for the MSc Course in Marketing in the first instance and be given the opportunity to change degree pathway at the end of the first semester.
The course is modular, so the credits awarded at the end of each assessed module can be accumulated towards a postgraduate qualification. Students of Marketing with Brand Management study three core topics in the Autumn Semester before deciding on their final course of study. In the Spring Semester MSc Marketing with Brand Management students have to apply this knowledge through a project undertaken for an external company and through an appreciation of Contemporary Issues in Marketing. To specialise in Brand Management students must also complete the modules on Brand Marketing and Digital marketing and Advertising and undertake an individual dissertation or group research project in the field of Branding.

The University has also invested heavily in IT labs and facilities. You’ll use software such as ARIS Express Business Process Modelling, various SAS applications, Microsoft Project, specialist decision-making software, and Google Analytics.

Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) is embedded throughout the course with tools such as the ‘Blackboard’ eLearning Portal and electronic reading lists that will guide your preparation for seminars and independent research. Our use of lecture capture software will help you revise challenging material.

There will be plenty of opportunities to put your learning into practice. The Student Engagement Centre promotes all types of experiential learning including volunteering, internships and placements. The Business Clinic enables our students to participate in a ‘consultancy firm’ to provide advice for our region’s businesses.

Research-Rich Learning

As a master’s student you’ll develop your research skills to a new and higher level. Your research supervisor will help you submit a proposal for your master’s dissertation or consultancy project and then discuss its development through to completion in the final semester.

If you decide on a master’s consultancy project, rather than a traditional dissertation, you’ll still undertake primary and desk research. Through your reading, reflection and research, you’ll be expected to show a deep understanding of the issues that are involved in the client brief.

Throughout your course you’ll be an active participant in the on-going research agenda that’s at the heart of Newcastle Business School. With conferences and research events regularly taking place, and with staff discussing their own research as it relates to the topics you’ll study, there’s a strong emphasis on engaging in up-to-date enquiry-based learning.

Give Your Career An Edge

The course includes two modules that are focused on developing global management competencies. Topics during these modules include emotional intelligence, cultural awareness and the ability to work in diverse groups and teams, as well as project management and decision making.

A further module, ‘Academic and Professional Development’, has a specific focus on self-development. It includes formal sessions with our Careers and Employment Service which offers a range of workshops, one-to-one advice, and networking opportunities.

The option of a master’s consultancy project, as an alternative to the traditional dissertation, can be an excellent vehicle for broadening your experience and building your track record.

In the second year of the course you’ll extend your knowledge of finance through specialist modules whose titles are ‘Corporate Financial Management’ and ‘International Financial Markets and Institutions’. You’ll also study a further module ‘Contemporary Issues in Management Research’.

A master’s course that takes two years, instead of just one, will carry particular weight with employers. They’ll understand that you’ll have a deeper understanding of topics as well as more experience.

The course fees are split evenly between year 1 and year 2. In addition, while you can only work twenty hours per week during term time, you can use the extra vacation periods to travel or work full time and help fund your time in the UK.

Your Future

Our graduates typically go into professional and graduate management positions and, by the end of the course, you’ll be well-equipped to follow them. Your knowledge and skills, including your specialisms in management and finance, will help you turn good businesses into great ones.

Some employers require completion of a two-year master’s and this course will meet their requirement.

If you decide to start up your own business, it’s good to know that the combined turnover of our graduates’ start-up companies is higher than that of any other UK university.

The course could also lead you to a postgraduate research degree such as an MPhil, PhD and Professional Doctorate.

Whatever you decide to do, you will have the transferable skills that employers expect from a master’s graduate from Northumbria University. These include the ability to tackle complex issues through conceptualisation and undertaking research, the ability to contribute to new processes and knowledge, and the ability to formulate balanced judgements when considering incomplete or ambiguous data.
