What you will study

The Postgraduate Diploma focuses on training as an integrative counselling and psychotherapy practitioner. On successful completion, you will be ready to work as a trained Integrative therapist.

Year One:
- Integrative Counselling Skills and Practice: Introduces the core model of the course and provides foundation theory & skills in humanistic/existential and relational psychodynamic counselling practice.

- Applied Integrative Practice: Introduces the foundations theory and skills of Cognitive Behavioural counselling and Mindfulness. Students learn to integrate these approaches in applied practice with client issues.

- Personal Development & Counselling Practice: This module runs throughout the year and places emphasis on personal development group work and skills practice within a sound ethical framework.

Year Two:
- Advanced Integrative Theory & Skills Practice: This module aims to further develop students understanding of core integrative theory taught in the course and how theoretical ideas can be applied to practice. Advanced research practices are introduced with a view to students being able to use research to inform their practice.

- Advanced Applied Practice: The emphasis of this module is on applied practice: showing students how the core integrative model taught can be used to work ethically with the range of client issues typically found in professional counselling practice. Research development is consolidated through students conducting a small-scale piece of research.

- Advanced Personal Development & Counselling Practice: This module runs throughout the year and places emphasis on personal development group work and skills practice within a sound ethical framework.

The Postgraduate Diploma is part of a three year MA Programme. After successful completion of the Diploma stage, which is two years, you can choose whether to proceed to the final Masters year.

Learning and teaching methods

Classes include interactive theoretical lectures, experiential workshops, personal development groups, role plays, skills groups, digital recording of skills sessions for assessment and presentations. In addition, you will need to be in placement seeing ‘real’ clients for the duration of the course and will have to have completed a minimum of 100 hours counselling practice by the end of the two years.

Attendance:
This course takes 2 years part-time to complete.

The PG Diploma is taught over 30 days each academic year. For the 2014/15 academic year the main teaching day will be on a Wednesday. Year one of the programme starts with a two-day block (Wednesday 24th & Thursday 25th September) and finishes with a two-day block (Wednesday & Thursday) at the end of May. In addition, students will be required to attend a weekend workshop each academic year (in year one, this is residential) and two one-day summer workshops. We expect that students attend all teaching sessions, and there is a minimum requirement of 80% attendance in order to complete the course successfully.

Work Experience and Employment Prospects

While more practice experience will be required to build the hours to achieve personal BACP accreditation, having successfully completed the formal training hours and assignments, graduates of the course will be ready to look for work in the field of counselling and psychotherapy.

Former students from the course have enhanced their career profile within their current employment or found new positions in the voluntary sector, in health settings, in Higher or Further Education, in Employment Assistance Programmes (EAPs), in business and in private practice. What you will study

Dissertation: At the masters stage, you will learn about the different research methods which help develop knowledge about counselling and psychotherapy. You will then put this into action in your own choice of research project, on a topic relevant to integrative counselling and psychotherapy. You will be allocated a personal supervisor to provide expert guidance, advice and support.

Learning and teaching methods

During the Masters research and dissertation stage, you will have research training days including practical and interactive sessions, seminars, computer-based research training and individual dissertation supervision. You will be an independent learner on your own project.

The Masters research and dissertation stage takes one year part-time to complete, following completion of the Postgraduate Diploma in Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy. You will attend for 6 days of teaching plus you will have individual supervision of your research project at the University, or by phone, Skype or email if that suits you better.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT

The learning environment will be student-centred, using and sharing students' experiences to aid the learning process and encourage independent learning. Participants and tutors are co-learners. A diverse range of learning and teaching methodologies will be used, including student-led seminars, group discussion, group and individual psychotherapy practice and observation, the use of audio and DVD recording, case studies and discussion, experiential exercises, lectures, guest speakers and supervised practice.

The residential is assessed by a reflexive essay and tutor observation. Students are required to pass the observation before commencement of the course.

In the first year, students are required to submit a theoretical essay, a critique of a research paper, a DVD recording and evaluation, an ethics essay, a reflexive statement and a student-led presentation. There is also an end of year viva, or oral exam, with a personal tutor, which is based on a personal development statement that the student makes.

In the second year, students are required to submit a Case Study, an audio tape and self-evaluation, a reflexive practitioner extended essay, practice portfolio and a student-led presentation and include an account of their clinical supervision.

In the third year, students are required to submit a research proposal and a Masters dissertation.

UCLan’s Postgraduate Diploma in Integrative Psychotherapy is BACP accredited and those who successfully complete the Postgraduate Diploma are entitled to practice as psychotherapists. This course provides quality professional training in Integrative Psychotherapy. It will provide students with a constructive and challenging learning experience which develops interconnectedness of theory, practice, research, self-awareness and personal development. It offers trainee psychotherapists a sound experience for the development of an Integrative approach to Psychotherapy that forms a critical basis for practice and has ethical and professional integrity. It aims to develop practitioners who are competent to offer high-quality Integrative Psychotherapy in a variety of contexts, appropriate to the needs of the client, organisation and society.

The course is divided into five main areas:
-Integrative Psychotherapy theory that builds in Year 1 from a relational and phenomenological base, drawing on key influences from the Gestalt/Dialogic, Person Centred, Emotionally Focused Therapy. In Year 2 Psychodynamic and Intersubjective influences on therapeutic process are also drawn on, as well as a consideration of the existential and transpersonal dimensions of the therapeutic relationship. Students are facilitated to establish an approach to Integrative Psychotherapeutic practice via established models (Gelso and Carter, Clarkson), supported by research, awareness and skills.
-Personal Development is interwoven in the experiential nature of the course and processed throughout. There is also a Personal Development Group every week in the first two years.
-Professional Development which includes the BACP Ethical Framework, practice-based research, note-taking, supervision, issues of difference, gender, race, sexuality, spirituality, disability, and psychotherapy contexts and themes.
-Professional Practice, which includes the use of DVDs, small group work, triads, peer and tutor observation, and a supervised placement of a minimum of 100 hours in an approved setting.
-Research via a critique of a research paper, the study of research methodology, a small research project and the writing of a dissertation in the third year. Current research is imparted throughout the course.

The first two years of the program constitute the post graduate diploma in integrative psychotherapy. The successful completion of the postgraduate diploma will enable students to claim the status of a graduate of a BACP accredited training course.

The MA dissertation may then be undertaken by those students who are able to continue, having gained at least a merit in the post graduate diploma, and who wish to undertake postgraduate research.

The MSc Integrative Psychotherapy, leading to professional registration with UKCP in Psychotherapy or Psychotherapeutic Counselling, is suitable if you are a graduate and wish to achieve professional registration in psychotherapy or psychotherapeutic counselling. UKCP operates separate registers for practitioners who work with young people and adults, and successful completion of this programme leads to entry onto either of these specialist registers. A 60 credit Graduate Certificate in Integrative Counselling Skills is also available to enable you to develop your clinical skills in psychotherapy, and provides a bridge to the MSc programme for applicants without prior clinical qualifications.

[What does the course cover?]

Programme content is based on the professional requirements for either child or adult practitioners, but both specialisms also share certain common components. To meet UKCP accreditation requirements, you will develop a portfolio to evidence your skills and learning throughout the programme. This portfolio will form the basis of your registration with UKCP, via Newman’s professional accrediting partner, the Northern Guild for Psychotherapy. In line with professional requirements governing training duration, students with no previous clinical experience could qualify as psychotherapeutic counsellors after 3 years of study and as psychotherapists after 4 years, subject to completion of all course components. Training components include clinical placements, supervision, personal therapy, and mental health placements.

BACP accreditation
At the end of Year 1, you may have enough training hours to apply for individual accreditation with the British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy (BACP). The BACP also requires candidates to show evidence of 450 hours of supervised clinical practice. Application to BACP can only be done by the individual and the School is unable to play a role in this process.

This programme provides the training in counselling and psychotherapy necessary to become eligible for BACP (British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy) individual practitioner accreditation.

The course, accredited by the BACP, is based on an integrative relational approach to counselling and psychotherapy, which has been developed over many years by our cutting-edge teaching team. Our integrative approach, at the forefront of counselling and psychotherapy theory, practice and research, incorporates aspects from three main therapeutic traditions; person-centred, cognitive and psychodynamic. You will be encouraged to explore psychological processes and experiences from these different perspectives, and recognise the theoretical, personal and cultural assumptions which influence your work.

As well as cognitive and reflective skills, you will also learn practical ways of working with your clients in a therapeutic relationship to address conscious and unconscious needs and produce a change in emotional and cognitive processes and behaviour. This involves integrating complex and advanced skills, and responding creatively to complex, novel and unpredictable situations.

Our teaching includes life-span developmental theories, therapeutic skills practice in small groups, supervision of client work in small groups, critical analysis of approaches and research into counselling and psychotherapy. You will develop a critical understanding of the role of research in the development of the counselling and psychotherapeutic disciplines, and be able to incorporate research knowledge into clinical practice. You are required to be in personal therapy throughout the course, which will help you to develop a high level of awareness of self and the therapeutic process, to be able to use this constructively in therapeutic encounters. You will be equipped with the necessary skills to work with a wide range of people with a range of psychological issues in a variety of settings.

Content

The Integrative Counselling and Psychotherapy programme is taught by means of interactive lectures and seminars, experiential skills workshops, small clinical supervision groups, and personal development work. Much of your learning will be by a process of reflection on the experience of skills practiced and the use of demonstration, observation, self, peer and tutor feedback as well as a more traditional academic study.

The course emphasises the central importance of the therapeutic relationship, and builds your understanding of a variety of theories and practices, to make informed choices about therapeutic interventions suitable for the problems which clients present. Central to developing your therapeutic skills is a sustained effort of attunement to the client as well as openness to and awareness of their and your internal processes. As well as having a theoretical understanding of these processes, from the first year you will have modules allowing you the opportunity to practice your counselling skills.

Later modules in the course will familiarise you with a variety of forms of psychological assessment, so that you are able to critically evaluate the appropriateness and limitations of the procedures and underlying concepts. As many students will go on to work in a multidisciplinary team, in particular within the NHS, they need to have an understanding and working knowledge of psychiatric diagnoses and classification systems, while being aware of their acknowledge limits and critiques.

The MSc by Research in Integrative Neuroscience is a one-year, full-time research programme covering all levels of modern neuroscience, which makes it an ideal programme to prepare you for a PhD.

We include molecular, cellular, systems, regenerative, cognitive, clinical and computational neuroscience. We also allow you to choose your specialty right from the start, allowing you to shape your learning around your interests and career goals.

Programme structure

You start with a taught component in the first 12 weeks, and attend ‘themed weeks’ which run in parallel with elective from which you choose your optional courses. The Elective optional courses include:

-Developmental Neurobiology
-Neural Circuits
-Neurodegeneration and Regeneration

The elective courses run during the first 12 weeks on two half days per week. These will give you a deeper insight into the concepts and methodology of a specific field of interest.

For your research you can choose available projects or contact principal investigators from more than 120 groups in the Edinburgh Neuroscience community to develop your own project, which can range from psychology to nanoscience. Examples of completed projects are:

- Axon Initial Segment plasticity in a mouse model of Fragile X Syndrome (Peter Kind)

Over the last decades, improvements in technology have led to a rapid increase in the use of neuroimaging to study human brain function non-invasively in health and disease. In particular, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), electro-encephalography (EEG), magneto-encephalography (MEG) and transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) are now routinely used by neuroscientists to study brain-behaviour relationships. Our MSc in Brain Imaging showcases Nottingham’s multi-disciplinary environment and offers a comprehensive programme that will provide you with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills required to conduct high-quality neuroimaging work and neuroscience research. Translational in vivo neuroscience approaches in animal models will also be considered, and interested students will have the opportunity to receive research training in this area.

The MSc in Integrative Counselling and Coaching offers professional training for those who aim to integrate various counselling approaches and coaching in their one-to-one practice.

Broadly speaking, counselling concerns itself with the resolution of internal conflicts and psychological changes. Coaching deals more with goal achievement and behavioural changes that can be measured and perceived.

For example, counselling would deal with the reasons why someone had a drink problem, while coaching would deal with the habit itself.

Although there is some overlap between these two approaches, they are not interchangeable. However, they can be complementary.

This course is answering an urgent need that reflects a general trend towards more open-minded, integrative practice.

You can apply to do the course with a wide range of degrees.

The first year is taken up with counselling training. The second year offers coaching training and an introduction to a specific model of integration, Personal Consultancy. The third year consists of a module on research methods and dissertation.

As a successful graduate you will be able to apply for membership of and eventual accreditation by the BACP (which would require additional practice hours).

The Department of Integrative Biology is comprised of faculty members in three overlapping fields of emphasis: Ecology, Evolutionary Biology and Comparative Physiology. Research is focused on a wide variety of organisms (from microbes to plants to animals) at multiple levels of organization (from molecules and cells through to entire ecosystems). Basic research is being used as a foundation to address some of the most important regional and global issues.

Research Environment and Facilities

The University of Guelph is home to diverse, state-of-the-art facilities that contribute to research and graduate training. Extensive freshwater and saltwater holding facilities for aquatic organisms are available in the Hagen Aqualab. The University is home to one of the largest herbariums in Canada, and has a strong partnership with the Royal Botanical Gardens. The Biodiversity Institute of Ontario
provides first class facilities to investigate the genetic diversity of organisms, and the Limnotron enables experimental manipulation of aquatic food webs.

The department engages in field work throughout the world including local (the Arboretum, RARE in Cambridge, Algonquin Park), Arctic (Churchill, MB, Alaska, Yukon), African (Serengeti), and tropical (Costa Rica, Cambodia) sites. The department has access to field sites at the Arboretum, Algonquin Park, and the Huntsman Marine Science Center in New Brunswick, as well as access to extensive greenhouse and plant growth facilities across campus. Graduate students have access to facilities in the Advanced Analysis Centre including those for Genomics, Mass Spectrometry, NMR, X-ray crystallography and facilities for the growth of bacteria, yeast, mammalian and plant cells. These latter facilities are located in the Summerlee Science Complex, a 400,000 sq. ft building designed to enhance team-based science that crosses traditional discipline boundaries.

This award title will relate to your area of professional practice.

The course offers flexible and adaptable study for those seeking professional development opportunities, and for whom customised courses relating directly to the work setting are the most effective way of achieving their objectives.

What will I learn?

Areas of learning are negotiated, and this means you can negotiate a learning pathway and award title that meets your personal and professional development needs. You will be able to select from a range of modules in areas such as coaching, teaching and learning, negotiation, business, management, leadership, mentoring, and communication skills.

How will I be taught?

The course is a blended learning experience and can involve workshop-led modules, online tuition and experiential learning at work (such as work-based projects). It is flexible, and within certain agreed parameters you can work at your own pace.
There are 200 notional learning hours per 20 credits. For 20-credit modules (pro rata for bigger modules), direct contact time typically varies between three and 20 hours, depending on the module.

How will I be assessed?

Research profile

The Centre for Integrative Physiology (CIP) fosters research into fundamental mechanisms and pathways relevant to human function and disease.

CIP investigators exploit rapid advances in the enabling technologies available from genomics, proteomics, imaging, informatics, and in vivo analysis to understand the function of gene products at the cell, organ and whole-animal level.

Importantly, CIP investigators exploit the most appropriate model organisms/systems to investigate the key physiological question being posed: a delicate balance between high biomedical relevance (for example human, mouse, rat) and high genetic power (such as Drosophila and fish).

Training and support

Three- and four-year research degrees
Three- and four-year studentships are offered. Postgraduate students carry out their studies within a research group under the supervision of an academic staff member (their 'first supervisor').

In addition, students are assigned a personal thesis committee comprising their supervisor and two other academic staff members, who provide advice and mentoring, and monitor progress.

In their first year, students have the opportunity of participating in relevant taught modules of a number of associated MSc courses (for example Developmental Cell Biology and Neuroinformatics). Students attend research seminars and the generic skills training programme provided by the Life Sciences Graduate Programme. Postgraduates also have the opportunity to act as demonstrators for undergraduate teaching.

Students are strongly encouraged to present their findings at national and international conferences and to publish their findings in international journals during their postgraduate training.

MSc by Research

Our MSc by Research is a full-time 1-year research project done under the supervision of a CIP Researcher. This programme has no taught component and is therefore only suitable for highly motivated students with a clear idea of their research interests and goals, with significant theoretical or practical knowledge of a chosen field. An MSc by full-time research provides an excellent training in laboratory research and a strong grounding for further study at the level of PhD. Initial enquires should be made directly to Dr. Paul Skehel.

MSc students will work full-time on their research project with the additional option of taking selected transferable skills courses. Each student will have two supervisors. After 3 months study a short presentation and report of completed and proposed work will be made to the supervisors, at which point progression from Diploma to full Masters will be considered. Students that demonstrate sufficient progress and aptitude will progress for a further 9 months full-time research after which a Dissertation will be presented and assessed for the award of MSc.

A preliminary email briefly outlining your research interests and identifying up to three potential supervisors from the CIP should be sent directly to Dr Paul Skehel. If appropriate, students will then be invited to submit a short 400-word general outline for a potential MSc project with specific supervisors. Applicants progressing to this point will then be guided to make a formal application on this page. Please note that the MSc by Research has additional programme costs of £5,000.

Facilities

The core of the CIP occupies the newly refurbished Hugh Robson Building and has facilities for all aspects of modern molecular, cellular and systems biology.

Research is mainly funded by grants from the MRC, the BBSRC and industrial companies.
