Increasingly, global product design and developments are created by multinational teams, and operate in a virtual environment using cutting-edge information technology. This has created the need for a design course which focuses on international new product design and development. This new course aims to meet this industrial demand by integrating technology, management, ergonomics, marketing, business and design methods to produce highly qualified and sought after designers able to cope with the challenges the global economy presents. Teaching And Assessment

This MA Design course incorporates practice-based learning that is informed by contemporary and contextual influences and founded on your own personal aims and professional direction.

The first two semesters of this course will focus on developing your core skills through the completion of four modules: design thinking, design practice, direction and experimentation.

Teaching is delivered via a mix of lectures, seminars and tutorials, which are assessed by coursework and design projects. You will also undertake collaborative projects and, where possible, field trips to allow you to put your skills into practise in a real-world context.

STUDY TRIPS

Students will take part in an international study trip of one week in one European Fashion Capital. They will have the opportunity to meet with leading industry professionals and visit companies in the fashion, design and luxury industries.

During the company visits students will work on a project relating to one of these industries and in alignment with their future career ambitions.

INTERNSHIP

Each student will undertake an internship of a minimum of three months in a company of their choice at the end of the classroom part of the program. The internship will contribute directly to the content of the Final Management Project and may take place anywhere in the world.

FINAL MANAGEMENT PROJECT

The second year of the program is dedicated to the Final Management Project which will be undertaken under the supervision of a GGSB professor.
Students will focus on a management aspect of the fashion, design and luxury industries; they are also encouraged to choose the subject of the Final Management Project in coherence with their future career goals. It is possible to complete the project in parallel with an employment or an internship in France or abroad.

FOREIGN LANGUAGES

Foreign language skills are essential in a globally competitive business environment. The program is taught in English, and no prior knowledge of French is required to attend the program. Students have the possibility of learning French or another foreign language such as Spanish or Chinese during the program.
This language component, although not compulsory, is highly recommended for students who intend to pursue an international career, since companies in the Fashion, Design and Luxury industry are currently recruiting personnel speaking the language of the country in which they are based, in addition to English and in-demand languages like Chinese or Russian.

The MSc in Fashion, Design and Luxury Management will be offered at the GGSB Grenoble, Paris and London campuses.

This is a hybrid programme that aims to integrate the principles of “DIGITAL DESIGN CREATIVITY” and “INTEGRATED/COLLABORATIVE DESIGN” under the same pedagogical framework. The course will investigate the integration of digital media in architectural and urban design at all three levels; creative (e.g. parametric, generative), operational and collaborative (e.g. BIM). Through collaborative design exercises, students will gain practical experience of working with diverse digital media and techniques to generate, evaluate and communicate design intelligence and information.

In addition to developing team working skills, they will also be encouraged to identify and follow individually tailored career paths in line with their individual interests and aspirations. The course is specifically designed to accommodate and support learner-directed professional development in three main areas of digital and integrated design: creative design, digital modelling/simulation, design information management. We aim to cultivate an intellectual climate, providing close links with innovative design practices, embracing experiential learning supported with state-of-the-art facilities and resources.

- provide the students with a comprehensive understanding of technology-mediated design theories, methods and techniques in Architecture and Urban design.

Goldsmiths' Department of Design runs the PGCE (Secondary) in Design & Technology. The curriculum includes working with resistant materials (product design), systems and control (electronics, CAD/CAM), textiles, and food technology. What unifies these is the subject of Design, and the development of designing competence.

This programme is aimed at preparing you to teach in two broad areas.

You’ll be given the opportunity to specialise in one area to Key Stage 3 (age 11-14), and another to Key Stage 4 and beyond (age 14+). Key Stage 3 specialist fields are Materials; Textiles; Electronics and Communications Technology; and Food. The two Key Stage 4 specialist fields are Materials and Textiles.

Through an integrated course that involves both a practical and theoretical approach, you’ll be encouraged to reach your potential as a fully qualified teacher.

Structure

College-based work
There are seminars examining the nature of Design and Technology education, and workshops designed to develop your subject expertise. By the end of the programme you must offer a second area of competence to teach to the end of Key Stage 3, as well as your specialist area at Key Stages 4 and 5.

You engage in two design activities: one in the first term, and the second throughout the year.

The first activity is mirrored by the same project being undertaken by Year 9 pupils in a local school, and culminates in a shared presentation.

The second activity culminates in a presentation of a personal design-and-make project to your peers, to consider and reflect on the nature of the process of designing.

School-based work

During the Autumn Term you are placed in your first school, usually with a partner Design and Technology student teacher. The aim is induction, both into schooling and the teaching of design and technology, and into learning and teaching practices.

You do this by:

-observing teachers working and pupils participating in learning activities
-learning about whole school policies and practices
-studying the Design and Technology curriculum at Key Stages 3 and 4 (examinations)
-progressively taking on teaching activities, initially in tandem with the class teacher
-Spring and Summer terms are devoted to teaching practice in a second school, developing your competence to meet the Professional Standards.

You design a scheme of work for the Key Stage 3 curriculum, and develop your understanding of pupil learning styles, National Curriculum requirements, assessment and examinations.

Work placement scheme

Kingston University has set up a scheme that allows postgraduate students in the Faculty of Science, Engineering and Computing to include a work placement element in their course starting from September 2017. The placement scheme is available for both international and home/EU students.
-The work placement, up to 12 months; is optional.
-The work placement takes place after postgraduate students have successfully completed the taught portion of their degree.
-The responsibility for finding the placement is with the student. We cannot guarantee the placement, just the opportunity to undertake it.

Why a program in Engineering Design ?

Engineering Design is the application of engineering principles, the experience of making, and use of mathematical models and analysis. Teaching methods

The course begins with a series of online study and research skills, which provide a thorough grounding in the philosophical and theoretical issues surrounding notions of so-called practice-based research and the relationship between academic and professional values. At the end of Year 1 when this Phase has been successfully completed, the candidate then undertakes an individual supervised research project in his or her own professional discipline. During this second Phase there are online study materials and structured learning experiences that guide the candidate towards the presentation of a comprehensive outline of the doctoral research. Once the second Phase has been successfully completed (normally during Year 3), the candidate focuses on the production of a written thesis and accompanying artefacts that communicate the content of the research project. Throughout the whole programme we expect both practice and theoretical research to be completely integrated.

Work Placement

This course does not offer work placement. The concept of the professional doctorate (in contrast to the PhD) is that students are already professionally engaged in the workplace, and use this experience as the basis of their doctoral study. Research questions that are grounded in the workplace form the focus of the inquiry, and solutions are implemented through the workplace.
