Our Integrated Industrial Design MSc programme aims to further develop critical awareness of major industrial design practice, increasing input capability and value to employers and is designed to improve the effectiveness of Industrial Designers.
Industrial Design (ID) is"the professional service of creating products and systems that optimize function, value and appearance for the mutual benefit of user and manufacturer” (IDSA) and is considered and integrated with an enterprise, business and sustainability agenda. The 180 credit programme culminates in a 60 credit Integrated Industrial Design Major Project that provides an opportunity to bring together all of the elements appropriate to the project Design problem or opportunity.
The entire design process is covered, starting from a design problem or opportunity and ending with a complete product that is fit for mass or batch production.
You will develop skills in producing a balanced portfolio of high quality designs and innovative thinking which will enable you to deal with complex and interrelated issues both analytically and creatively.
Areas covered include: sketching, visual layouts, presentation techniques, qualitative and quantitative design research methods, Enterprise & Business, Design for Behaviour Change, Collaborative Design, creating product design briefs, project management, advanced CAD application and design practice culminating in a 60 credit Integrated Industrial Design Major Project that provides an opportunity to implement all of the appropriate elements.
The Integrated Industrial Design MSc programme also provides you with the exciting opportunity to enter an international design competition as well as participation in industry supported projects.

Offering industry engagement in fashion management or design strategy and innovation, you will develop transferrable design knowledge that will enable you to recognise the value of design and provide effective leadership and management within this sector. The MA Design Management course incorporates learning through investigation and the application of design methods in a business context.
The theory-based aspect of the course covers essential elements such as creative thinking, intellectual property, inter-cultural communication, research principles, reflective practice, contemporary influences and commercialisation.
These contextual modules provide the perfect foundation for the remainder of your degree, which develop your understanding the field of design management.
Teaching is delivered via a mix of lectures, seminars and tutorials, which are assessed by coursework and design projects. You will also have the opportunity to participate in collaborative projects and, where possible, field trips to allow you to put your skills into practise in a real-world context.

This course is delivered at the Northumbria School of Design, which is located at City Campus East – a dedicated learning space that is located within Newcastle city centre.
Throughout the duration of your course you will have access to state-of-the-art facilities such as our University library – which is ranked in the top three in the UK – and well equipped working space, The Hub, which is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The Masters in Product Design Engineering, taught in collaboration with the School of Design, Glasgow School of Art will develop your ability to design products with significant engineering content, address user needs, and optimise solutions for specific markets.
You will attend lectures, seminars and tutorials and take part in lab, project, team and studio work, industrial visits, and workshops.
Career opportunities include product research and development, system design, product manufacture and engineering design. The programme aims to provide opportunities to work on live projects with industry: this can lead to employment opportunities. Examples of companies that employ our Product Design Engineering graduates are Apple, DELL, Dyson, Jaguar-Land Rover, TomTom and Smart.
The MSc Product Design Engineering is accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineering. An accredited degree will provide you with some or all of the underpinning knowledge, understanding and skills for eventual registration as an Incorporated (IEng) or Chartered Engineer (CEng). Some employers recruit preferentially from accredited degrees, and an accredited degree is likely to be recognised by other countries that are signatories to international accords.
An emphasis on product and process technology alone is seen as insufficient for business success. Technological competence needs to be combined with a deep understanding of users, the social and cultural context of use, as well as the utilisation of design in the creation of meaningful and sustainable solutions.
The Design and Engineering multi-disciplinary programme is created with the purpose of combining the rigor of technical development and the honing of engineering competence with the creative, inspirational and communicative power of design. Master's Programme in Design and Engineering has been established by two Estonian leading Educational Centers of Excellence: Tallinn University of Technology and Estonian Academy of Arts, in order to meet current demands in cross-disciplinary professionals.
The aim of the curriculum is to combine the basic competences of engineers and designers to develop the framework for a strong interdisciplinary cooperation. During two years of joint studies a firm base in design and engineering theories will be built and a whole set of professional skills of both disciplines will be developed. Besides the two core study areas of design and engineering students will get a firm understanding of contemporary entrepreneurial world. The impact of buildings and indoor environments on the health and wellbeing of occupants is an important design factor, particularly in the areas of architecture, interior design and product design. The need for spaces, buildings and interior products to create a positive environment for occupants is increasing. This offers an opportunity for a new generation of designers specialising in design for health and wellbeing. Solent’s MA Design for Health and Wellbeing also offers a platform for progression to employment in the design, healthcare consultancy or related fields.
The curriculum combines theory and practical elements, based on core areas of design, science and functionality to enhance immediate surroundings. Students on this course will benefit from the extensive links staff have established with industry, based on many years of delivering professionally accredited courses (eg, CIAT, SBID). Practitioners from a cross-section of the built environment regularly contribute to the academic process through providing real-world based projects, guest lectures, and site visits. They also work with students in small informal settings during seminars and mentoring sessions.
The ID4A Master educational aim is to train professionals skilful at developing high quality projects in the field that ranges over the architectural layout and the efficiency of the building components.
The Master has also the objective of completing the training of designers, extending their expertise and problem solving skills with the culture and tools typical of Industrial Design. This aim is sought through an educational course that integrates theoretical knowledge with design studios, vocational activities such as visits to companies and practices and meeting with professionals, and the mandatory internship in architecture and design practices or companies of the building sector.
The Master course aims at answering to the ever-changing job market, that demands professionals able to work within contexts where multidisciplinary skills are useful and appreciated. The Master ID4A trains designers able to operate on different canvas and to tackle the challenges of the integrated design into diverse national and international realities of the building sector.
The program includes three formative areas dealing with different aspects of Industrial Design:
• Design Culture: history and evolution of design, with special reference to aesthetic developments and to the ever closer relationship that has been developing over the years between product and build up space.
• Design Technology: study of the different technology, materials and tools needed in conceiving and realizing products that combine in a built up environment.
• Design Strategy: study of new construction processes, design innovation management and the introduction of design in the corporate strategies of companies in the sector.
A fourth area will be added to these: Design Studio, which will include practical work in design on various design themes such as:
• designing finished built-in products, in other words as integratable building components;
• designing electronic consumer products and space saving products that are highly intergratable with building manufacturing;
• designing serial construction products, e.g. for temporary structures and modular building solutions;
Such tasks may be individual or in teams and may envisage the participation of a leading companies in the sector of reference. The assessment achieved will constitute the basis for final marking.
