The MSc in Insurance & Risk Management starts with two compulsory induction weeks, focused on:

• An introduction to the Cass Careers offering with a focus on key skills and attributes that employers are looking for. The annual MSc Careers Fair at this time also provides the opportunity to meet over 60 companies who are recruiting across many sectors including finance, energy, insurance, real estate, shipping, strategic management and internal auditing.

• a refresher course of basic financial mathematics, statistics, computing and electronic databases.

Format

To satisfy the requirements of the degree course students must complete:

• eight core courses (15 credits each)
and
• five electives (10 credits each)
or
• one elective (10 credits) and a Business Research Project (40 credits)

Assessment

Assessment of modules on the MSc in Insurance & Risk Management, in most cases, is by means of coursework and unseen examination. Coursework may consist of standard essays, individual and group presentations, group reports, classwork, unseen tests and problem sets. Please note that any group work may include an element of peer assessment.

Gain the technical and business skills required to be an effective risk practitioner. Through a mixture of study and practical activities, which include real-world consultancy, you develop an understanding of how theory underpins applications in a developing sector.

This course develops a distinctive blend of technical and business skills enabling you to become a risk practitioner operating effectively in the public and private sectors.

The course enables you to gain the skills and knowledge required by practitioners who cover business strategy, managing change, operations, quantitative modelling and information systems to maximise business benefits. There is the opportunity to use these skills by taking part in consultancy projects with employers while studying on this course. The course also develops your understanding of the theoretical concepts that underpin the approaches and their application in the real world.

You choose to specialise as either an operational risk specialist or as an information systems risk manager. The content of the course gives you a solid understanding of the different specialist routes.

You use specialist risk software to model risk scenarios. Modelling risks using computer based applications are vital in today's corporate environment. The modules are designed to include real case studies and industry examples, the modelling work will focus on past risk scenarios. All these experiences will enhance your employability.

This course is for:

There are a number of UK-based day fieldtrips as part of the programme. These look at the multiple facets of disaster risk including the physical hazard, vulnerability of structures and communities, and mitigation measures and management.

The MSc in Quantitative Financial Risk Management (QFRM) develops the mathematical skills needed to make sound risk management decisions in the ever-changing financial markets. Graduates with such skills are highly desirable to employers who, typically, have developed their "rocket-science" based pricing systems and now want to focus on managing the risks of using them.

The QFRM MSc is mathematical, and a good degree in mathematics, or a mathematically based subject, is a pre-requisite. Practical, the emphasis is on the use of mathematics rather than the theory.

Heriot-Watt boasts a leading international research group in financial and actuarial mathematics. Lectures will be given by highly experienced staff at our campus which is set in pleasant grounds in Edinburgh, Scotland's vibrant capital city.

There are strong links between the QFRM MSc and Edinburgh's significant investment industry, with one of the modules actually being taught by industry personnel. The degree is in the process of becoming accredited by the Professional Risk Managers' International Association and some of the courses are also approved by the Institute & Faculty of Actuaries.
