The Faculty of Education has a longstanding national reputation for providing high-calibre initial teacher training with over 20 Secondary specialisms available. We have a well established partnership with over 800 secondary schools and colleges across the North West region and beyond.

This PGCE course, which is closely linked to the Royal Northern College of Music, will prepare you for a career in music teaching and challenge your thoughts about music education. The Specialist Instrumental Teaching route combines learning to teach music in the classroom and teaching your instrument (wind, brass, percussion, strings or voice) in different contexts.

Our award-winning Brooks building in Manchester has specialist music facilities, including practice rooms.

A minimum of 120 days school based practice training is combined with university based training and periods of independent study. Trainees are supported throughout by university and placement mentors.

Placement options

School placements are central to the course. Trainees on the University-led ('Core') route typically spend at least 120 days on school-based training. As an intending teacher you will begin by developing professional awareness, understanding and skills common to learning and teaching in a variety of settings. You will begin to understand the inter-relationship between the school and its community.

Placements are organised by Manchester Met and will be in at least two different schools or colleges and ranging from inner city to rural settings, mixed and single gender schools, City Academies, Comprehensives and Selective Schools, 11-16, 11-18, sixth form and further education colleges.

All trainees also have the opportunity to apply for a four week enrichment experience overseas. These help to develop an international educational perspective and provide the chance to gain some teaching experience in an international school. Enrichment is in addition to PGCE units of study and opportunities may differ year on year, for example, in 2016 trainees were placed at British International Schools in Kazakhstan, Cyprus or Norway or public schools in Orleans, France.

The music input of these courses is based at the prestigious Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester and we have a long-established reputation based on an extensive schools and colleges partnership.

We aim to develop analytical, successful and enthusiastic beginning teachers who are fully aware of the excitement and challenges which lie ahead and who can work effectively in a variety of educational settings.

Assessment details

Our PGCE Secondary programme combines practical teaching experience with written assignments. Trainees will complete a portfolio detailing their Record of Professional Development and a Career Entry Profile. Satisfactory attendance and professional engagement with the programme are also necessary factors in the successful completion of your chosen route.

This new taught programme will develop pedagogical skills in a context in which students can draw upon and deepen their existing practical experience as instrumental/vocal teachers. It can be undertaken as a full 180-credit MA, or as a Postgraduate Diploma or Certificate.

Students will develop theoretical and practical understanding of instrumental teaching, research skills and strategies for reflective practice: skills enhancing employability and capability.

The course is led by Dr Elizabeth Haddon LRSM. Her work on instrumental pedagogy has been published in leading peer-reviewed journals and she has presented at international music education conferences.

In addition to her work at the University of York as Research Fellow and piano teacher she also has considerable experience in private studio instrumental teaching.

Course structure

Students will participate in seminars and in practical sessions in which they will have the opportunity to teach others and to receive feedback on their teaching skills.

They will have regular meetings with the programme leader to discuss their progress and to plan and prepare work for assessment, which will include both written and practical work, with a final submission consisting of either an extended essay or a portfolio of lessons plus commentaries.

Students will have opportunities to engage in the many ensemble and performance activities on offer in this vibrant music department.

Employment outcomes

The Master of Music in Performance, Instrumental degree is offered for violin, viola, violoncello, double bass, guitar, flute, clarinet, oboe, bassoon, saxophone, trumpet, horn, trombone, baritone, tuba, and percussion. It is designed for those who can demonstrate appropriate performing ability and possess an appropriate undergraduate degree. If the degree is in an area other than the area of intended graduate study, no more than twelve hours of remediation will be required in instrumental-related studies.

All degree requirements must be completed within six years. A single one-year extension may be granted for cause.

Learning Outcomes

• Perform in a musically expressive manner and demonstrate the proper characteristics involved in, and related to, musical production.
• Demonstrate familiarity with musical literature and stylistic characteristics (NASM, PDE).

The curriculum has been developed in consultation with industry and can be broadly grouped in three areas: the introduction of new facts and concepts in measurement and control; the application of facts and concepts to real measurement problems and systems; and subjects which are of general importance to the professional engineer, for example safety and safety management and management ethics and project planning.

Distributed Instrumentation

Develops the ability to evaluate, in a given situation, the most appropriate strategy for acquiring and transmitting data and understand the merits of this strategy with respect to other approaches. A wide range of different instrument communication and networking techniques will be studied. In addition the module provides practical experience of hardware setup and software development, relating to these techniques.

Industrial Process Systems

Identification and system modelling from real data play an important role in this module. This approach thus leads to more complex and realistic models that can be used to design more robust and reliable controllers that take into account problematic physical effects such as time-delays and sensor noise. The module will cover more advanced aspects of control design such as feed forward and multivariable control.

Measurement Systems

A range of advanced measurement systems will be studied in depth. Sensors, signal processing, low-level signal measurements, noise-reduction methods and appropriate measurement strategies will be applied to industrial and environmental applications. The influence of environmental factors and operation conditions will be considered in relation to the optimisation of the measurement system.

Measurement Theory and Devices

Adopts a generalised approach to measurement theory and devices, allowing students to become familiar with the characteristics of measurement systems in terms of the underlying principles. In this way, the students will be able to develop a systems approach to problem solving. They should find this methodology to be a considerable benefit to them when they have to apply their expertise to solving more complex industrial measurement problems.

Professional Practice

Develops the students' ability to select, develop and plan an MSc research project, to research and critically analyse the literature associated with the project and to present research findings effectively, it will also provide students with the ability to apply a competent process of thinking to project planning and give them a critical understanding of safe and ethical working.

Overview

If you’re an experienced musician and want to put your skills to use supporting children and adults with additional needs, our emphasis on clinical placements will prepare you for a rewarding career.

Through lectures, practical workshops, case discussions and theoretical studies, we’ll introduce you to the most recent, effective music therapy approaches. You’ll reflect on your own practice in our clinical supervision group discussions, supported by regular individual tutorials.

In the UK there are two central elements of music therapy: the use of improvised and pre-composed music; and the significance given to the relationship between client and therapist. These principles will underpin your training. Our experiential teaching includes: development of your improvisation skills; focused work on your first instrument; keyboard, single line instrument and voice; music therapy theory and links to practice; block clinical placements in at least two fields, including community settings, schools, hospitals and hospices; and experience in multidisciplinary teams.

Your training will take place in our new state-of-the-art Music Therapy Centre and Clinic, where you’ll often study with MA Dramatherapy students. All our students go on supervised clinical placements, preparing you for employment in many different settings.

Throughout the course you'll be supported by our team of qualified music therapists, who have a strong reputation for research. In 2013 we appointed Jörg Fachner as Professor of Music, Mind and the Brain, to further develop our research activities. One of our course tutors, Professor Amelia Oldfield, was recently awarded the first ever Clinical Impact Award by the World Federation of Music Therapists. And in 2014, our music, dramatherapy and performing arts research was acknowledged as 'world-leading' in the UK Government's Research Excellence Framework.

Teaching times: two days a week plus two days on a clinical placement (Year 1). One day a week on campus plus a placement of least one day a week (Year 2).

Careers

As a qualified music therapist you’ll be able to work in many different areas including the NHS, hospices, social services, the education sector and the voluntary sector. The NHS Agenda for Change has led to improved career paths for music therapists at levels similar to, or higher than, those of other allied health professions.

You may also choose to work privately, or on a freelance basis, with a client base including adults and children with learning difficulties, mental health problems, and other special needs.

Successful completion of this course will allow you to register with the Health and Care Professions Council, a legal requirement for music therapists in the UK. Your qualification should also be recognised around the world.

You’ll benefit from our links with the British Association for Music Therapy and other allied health professions; Professor Helen Odell-Miller, for example, advises at government level for the profession. You’ll also be able to forge links with practitioners such as psychotherapists, arts therapists and psychiatrists.

Assessment

You’ll demonstrate your learning in a number of ways, including essays, live presentations and practical tasks such as clinical improvisation and composition. You’ll also undertake some self-analysis and reflection with your personal tutor.

Half-way through the course, your progress and process towards becoming a music therapist will be assessed by an examiner. Your final piece of written work will be a Major Project, which involves clinical evaluation. Meanwhile, in your final oral assessment you’ll present a piece of clinical work to two examiners, who will assess your overall clinical skills and readiness to practice.

One of our modules touches on dramatherapy and covers content from our MA Dramatherapy, as well as the Music Therapy course. Where techniques and approaches are specific to each profession you’ll be taught separately but on more generic subjects, such as psychoanalytic studies, psychiatry and psychology, you’ll benefit from working together.

Specialist facilities

You'll work in our new purpose-built therapy centre, which includes state-of-the-art therapy rooms and a large hall. The centre is used for all of our teaching and for our professional therapy consultations. We have a large range of musical instruments, specifically chosen for clinical work, and high-quality recording and videoing equipment in the therapy rooms.

You’ll also have access to the extensive range of facilities offered by the Department of Music and Performing Arts, including a fully-equipped drama studio, two other large drama rehearsal spaces, a recital hall, a suite of computer music studios and music practice rooms.

Our Cambridge campus also houses the Mumford Theatre, a full-size venue for professional touring companies.

Research

Our music therapy staff members are internationally renowned researchers and consultants and our research is recognised as world-leading. We hold regular international conferences and support a vigorous community of research students.

Applicants not specialising in performance for their UG programme will be required to demonstrate in audition and interview a standard on proposed principal instrument/voice equivalent to a minimum of a high II.1 bachelor degree. The audition should consist of c. 20 minutes of contrasting music. Vocalists are expected to demonstrate the ability to sing in three languages. Copies of music to be provided for examining panel along with listed programme.

International applicants must have a recognised primary degree considered equivalent to Irish university primary degree level.

What you will study

The curriculum has been developed in consultation with industry and can be broadly grouped in three areas: the introduction of new facts and concepts in measurement and control; the application of facts and concepts to real measurement problems and systems; and subjects which are of general importance to the professional engineer, for example safety and safety management and management ethics and project planning.

A specialist oil and gas industry instrumentation pathway is also available. Oil and gas industries are widely affected by a growing range of factors, including shifting global economics, an evolving global energy mix and environmental issues. The oil and gas industry instrumentation professional must be equipped to understand the principles and implementation of instrumentation, the importance of efficient and reliable measurement and control systems and have a suitably wide perspective of the subject area so that a number of different approaches to a problem can be identified.

Students complete eight taught modules - four in trimester A and four in trimester B; and a Masters project in trimester C.The MSc project will be carried out at the student's workplace; this can be in an area relevant to the company's production/maintenance function, thus providing maximum benefit to both the company and the individual.

This is due to an increasing need for higher technology methods of obtaining and processing oil and gas as it is a finite declining resource. The technical challenges of extracting oil and gas are becoming ever more demanding, with increasing emphasis on more marginal fields and previously inaccessible zones such as deep oceans, Polar regions, Falkland Islands and Greenland. The aim of this 18-month e-learning program is to provide you with core E & I engineering skills so that these opportunities may be accessed, to enhance your career, and to benefit your firm.

This advanced diploma is presented by lecturers who are highly experienced engineers from industry, having 'worked in the trenches' in the various E & I engineering areas.
