PREREQUISITE COURSES

Four prerequisite courses cover fields of study which provide you with the basic skills required to study subsequent courses:

Organisational Theory: Structure and Behaviour shows how various theories and models within the fields of organisational sociology and personality psychology may individually and in combination provide an expedient approach to creating an understanding of organisations as both structure and behaviour.

Emerging markets, their institutions and challenges. The course aims at providing an analytical framework for understanding emerging markets and their institutions. The importance and growth potentials of emerging markets, such as for example the Chinese, mean that they cannot be ignored, but their particularities at the same time pose serious liabilities of foreignness for Western firms. Overcoming these liabilities must start with an understanding of the institutional differences between the emerging markets and the economies of the West.

Management Research Method focuses on the production of qualified and justified knowledge which lives up to scientific quality criteria. This is a sine qua non issue for any candidate in business economics, who wishes to make decisions on an informed background. The course introduces a variety of research designs applicable when carrying out research in the area of organisation and management and related areas. Focus will first be on the philosophical issues pertaining to the creation of valid knowledge. In the second part focus will be on techniques for data collection and analysis. These techniques include qualitative as well as quantitative approaches.

SPECIALISATION COURSES

Organizational Change and Development concerns changes in organisations from a broad perspective. Analytically the course distinguishes between organisational, group and individual level. Changes are investigated with the use of classical as well as more recent theoretical models and practical tools. The course aims to give you a theoretical insight into the topic of change management. Moreover cases are used for practical application of different change models, through which strategic, structural and human issues are integrated. Central elements in the course are:

— Theoretical insight into management of change

— Analysing and diagnosing the need for changes in specific case organisations

— Choosing between types of interventions and strategies for implementation

— Human aspects of implementation (e.g. management, communication, motivation, training)”

Strategy and Business Development seeks to train your ability to apply central strategic tools for diagnostic purposes and subsequent business development in connection with the resolution of managerial aspects of development issues at a strategic level.

Leadership aims to provide insights into personal aspects of management, including issues such as shared, virtual, and team leadership.

Entrepreneurship enables you to understand the factors affecting the formation and growth of new enterprises. You must be able to analyse alternative organisational options and managerial challenges.

Human Resource Management and Development will give you a fundamental theoretical and practical insight into and understanding of the Human Resource Management (HRM) field – the dynamic interplay of person, job, and organisation. The course aims to train your ability to identify and understand different HRM issues and dilemmas within the field, and also in different forms of organisations. The course will also deal with International HRM.

In the third semester you can choose elective courses within your areas of interest. The courses can either be taken at Aarhus BSS during the semester, at the AU Summer University or at one of our more than 300 partner universities abroad. You can also participate in internship programmes either in Denmark or abroad.

The fourth semester is devoted to the final thesis. You may choose the topic of the thesis freely and so get a chance to concentrate on and specialise in a specific field of interest. The thesis may be written in collaboration with another student or it may be the result of your individual effort. When the thesis has been submitted, it is defended before the academic advisor as well as an external examiner.

The CIPD (Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development) is the professional body for HR and people development which aims to champion better work and better working lives. Course content

The aim of this course is to develop you as an HR professional. You will be introduced to specialised knowledge and research evidence giving you an in depth understanding of successful people management in organisations. Perhaps more importantly, you will practice the tools and techniques of strategic and operational HRM giving you practical, insight-driven experience which will help further your career.

The modules on this course are designed to provide you with expert knowledge of distinct HR subject areas together with exposure to contemporary debates, policies and practices, keeping you at the forefront of developments in your field.

You will develop an understanding of HRM within a range of organisational contexts, and you will be equipped with the analytical and diagnostic skills required of HR professionals.

In addition to the modules making up this course you will attend a two day off-site residential at the end of the taught programme focusing specifically on skills development activities. Attendance at the residential is a course requirement and the cost is included in the course fees.

Semester 1

HRM in Context – You will explore HRM in a business context to develop your understanding of the increasingly complex environments HR must work within both inside and external to organisations. This module allows learners to develop analysis skills to facilitate informed choices on which strategies may be most and least appropriate.

Investigating a Business Issue – You will diagnose and investigate a live business issue from a HR perspective, locate the issue within the body of contemporary knowledge, collect and analyse data, derive supportable conclusions and make practical and actionable recommendations for change and enhancement of current practice.

Resourcing and Talent Management – You will evaluate strategies for resourcing and managing talent within the organisation. There is a focus on activities concerned with resourcing the organisation; the practical aspects of recruitment, selection, employee retention and dismissal, and also on the strategic aspects of planning an organisation’s long and short term human resource requirements. This requires analysis of external labour markets and considerations of flexibility, as well as consideration of how internal labour markets may be made more productive and effective.

Performance Management – You will investigate the management of employee performance within the organisation, exploring the evidence that people are a major source of competitive advantage and the challenge of how best to develop and manage people to maximize their performance. You will assess the major systems for enhancing the performance of employees at all levels and advise organisations on the most appropriate methods for managing performance.

Semester 2

Leading Managing and Developing People – You will analyse key factors in leading, managing and developing people for organisational success. Every organisation is made up of individuals whose behaviour, individually or collectively will impact on its ability to succeed. Organisational performance can be enhanced and competitive advantage increased through the strategic management, leadership and development of people. This module enables you to gain an in-depth knowledge of HRM and HRD and to explore major themes from the growing literature and research in this subject area.

Learning and Talent Development – You will develop a critical understanding of the role and influence of a range of contextual factors associated with the design, delivery and evaluation of learning and development in a variety of organisational contexts. You will also explore and evaluate the contribution of learning and talent development strategies and practices in meeting the aspirations, ambitions and objectives of the organization and the individual. This is a seven week module.

Employment Relations – You will develop and reflect upon your knowledge and understanding of Employment Relations from a number of different perspectives. The holistic significance of employment relations within an organisation is emphasised together with the importance of aligning HR policies with business strategy, change processes, employee voice and involvement practices. Good employee relations are important for an organisation’s success in the achievement of its business objectives and for gaining employee commitment to those objectives. Increasing legislation in this area has also brought pressure to develop appropriate managerial strategies to ensure employee commitment to organisational success. This is a seven week module.

Semester 3

Research Methods and Dissertation – In this semester you will work on completing a 16,000 word dissertation. You will undertake this as self-study and you will be allocated a supervisor who will guide and support you through this process. Meetings with your supervisor are not compulsory but are strongly recommended.

At the end of teaching you will undertake a two day residential course that will explore how to put all the skills from the course into developing good HR practices.

Methods of Learning

The learning and teaching style on this course is designed to enable you to take responsibility for your own learning and skills development within a caring environment facilitated by high quality academic support from tutors. You will be introduced to much of the core course content through activities that can be undertaken in your own time, off campus. These will usually be facilitated through the University’s Virtual Learning Environment – a web-based portal where you will be able to participate in learning activities, on-line discussions, reading and reflection. During on-campus sessions, the emphasis will be on participative and interactive activities designed to consolidate and develop your understanding through debate, discussion, role-play and participation in events such as guest speakers and a mock employment tribunal.

The course uses a carefully balanced combination of in-course assignments designed to enrich your learning which include business projects, reflective activities, group work presentation, examinations and a substantial research dissertation

This course usually has a diverse student group and this diversity provides a rich basis for sharing of different experiences and thinking on organisational and people issues. Peer networking and action learning sets will be facilitated and encouraged to maximise the learning to be gained from different student experiences.

Full-time students will take four modules in both Semester 1 and 2, part-time students will take two modules in both Semester 1 and 2.

Each module will require you to attend a three hour workshop per week.

For full-time students, taught sessions will normally be delivered over two days each week. For part-time students, it would normally be one day per week.

To maximise chances of success on this course, we recommend students spend approximately 12 hours a week per module in self-directed study time to prepare for the sessions and complete assignments.

Assessments

Assessment will be undertaken by a range of methods including written assignments, business reports, projects, reflective activities, group work, presentations and examinations.

The 16,000 word Dissertation is a major component of this course and allows students to demonstrate a range of knowledge, skills and insight in their chosen topic area.

This course is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), Europe’s largest professional body supporting and developing those responsible for the management and development of people within organisations. The MA HRM reflects and incorporates CIPD knowledge and competence requirements. Completing the MA HRM will provide you with the underpinning knowledge required for Chartered CIPD membership. If you have the relevant experience you can then apply for full membership based on your workplace activities and behaviours through the CIPD.

The International Community increasingly faces the task of addressing a plethora of environmental challenges. The LLM Environmental law provides an insight into the international legal response to these various challenges which include global warming, ozone layer depletion, the over-exploitation by mankind of wildlife species and the destruction of vital habitat sites.

Many environmental problems require an international response. This course aims to provide the student with an insight into international environmental law with a focus on the general themes and principles in this area, the law relating to the protection of biodiversity, and that which endeavours to prevent or at least minimise the impact of transfrontier pollution.

The modules taught on this course cover a wide range of issues of contemporary relevance. The underlying purpose is to provide a solid grounding in the basic principles of European Community and international environmental law as applied in a particular context.

How has international environmental law evolved historically? Who are the main actors in the field? What key principles underpin regulation? What do we mean by the pursuit of “sustainable development”? How is the law in this area enforced? Treaty regimes explored include those relating to acid deposition, climate change, ozone layer depletion, nuclear contamination and freshwater pollution. In addition, an insight will be given to the various treaty regimes that seek to address the continuing pressures on the world’s biodiversity. For example, how is commercial whaling now regulated? What system is in place to regulate trade in endangered species? What of the protection of wetlands, Antarctica, world heritage and of migratory species?

Modern techniques of environmental regulation are also addressed, such as the funding mechanisms for international environmental treaties (e.g. Biodiversity Convention, Ozone Layer Convention) and the procedural requirement for environmental impact assessment of certain activities under international and European Community law.

This programme is designed therefore to provide an insight into the theories and practical skills needed for successful management and through that - a successful business. It is especially beneficial for those with non-business backgrounds, perhaps in engineering, sciences, social sciences or the arts. It can be equally as effective for those yet to begin their career as those looking to make significant progress in one already begun.

Blending classic management techniques with the very latest in management thinking, the MSc in Management encompasses international issues and diverse national business characteristics and settings.

This intensive and demanding programme is purposely designed towards practice orientation, supplementing the knowledge participants have already acquired - either in business or in their undergraduate studies - with a thorough insight into modern management practice.

Lifecycle one: Content Strategy for customer engagement
An exploration of driving customer engagement through effective content production and management. Themes will include understanding customer needs, proposition management, content planning and distribution and auditing and evaluation techniques

Lifecycle two: Growth and Performance Management
Investigating how effectively leveraging customer insight can lead to greater relevancy and efficiency in campaigns to improve results and lead to a cycle of continuous improvement. Themes will include CRM and eCRM, campaign planning, operational optimisation and collection and interpretation of insight.

Dissertation
The dissertation stage lasts for seven months, throughout which you will have regular meetings with your supervisor either online or face to face. You will also attend two initial training days to help you scope and structure your research.

Many of our graduates enter or continue employment in the creative industries in professional studios, as self-employed artists, illustrators and designers running their own businesses or in teaching in both formal and community education programmes.

Spike Print Studio in Bristol, the largest open-access print studio in the South West, employs four alumni (including the studio manager). Others are employed at national studios including Curwen Studio and Lazarides Editions in London. Alumni have also established their own professional studios, for example John Lynch's Stereograph workshops or David Abbott's Chesapeake Ltd, Bristol.

What You Study

During the first year of the MA Music Therapy course, you will establish a strong theoretical basis built up from a range of disciplines, with an emphasis on psychodynamic music therapy. Your competence in clinical practice and your understanding of therapeutic relationships will then be developed in years two and three through supervised placements. These will be integrated with your university based learning.

Uniquely, you will benefit from training alongside colleagues who are trainee art psychotherapists, and you will acquire insight and a shared understanding of the other creative modality, as a basis for future professional practice in multi-disciplinary teams.

Infant observation is an exciting feature of the first year, offering an informative and in depth grounding in human development that will inform for the rest of your study. Creative music skills sessions enable you to further develop musically.

During the training, you will develop your personal music skills through working with your peers. You’ll have the opportunity to perform at the opening of the art psychotherapy students end of year exhibition which will give you insight into the creative processes involved in responding to another artform using your own modality. You may also be involved in assisting course team members in their research projects.

Assessment methods

You will be assessed through a combination of essays, presentations, practicals, coursework, professional development, improvisations, performance, dissertation and viva voce assessment.

Facilities

Students have access to a full range of IT equipment, an extensive range of percussion sounds, and digital and acoustic pianos. Students are also able to practise in small scale rehearsal spaces.
