This MPA is designed to train the next generation of policy leaders in how to use science, technology and engineering to address development needs. Students learn how to build innovation systems and engage in policy experimentation. Students undertake a major project on a real development initiative and have opportunities to learn from global policymakers and innovators.

Degree information

Students are taught the conceptual frameworks, policy analysis tools and analytical methods to creatively develop innovative sustainable development policies. Students also study how development and innovation policies are implemented, evaluated and revised in policy cycles. A focus on leadership and the development of professional skills is emphasised throughout.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of four core modules (105 credits), one optional module (15 credits), an elective module (15 credits), and a major group project module (45 credits).

Core modules - students undertake three core modules with students from sister MPA programmes, and a specialist module focusing on their degree topic.

Dissertation/report
In the group project, students work with an external client on a relevant policy challenge. With the support of STEaPP academic staff, the multidiscipinary student groups work together to produce an analysis that meets their clients' needs.

Teaching and learning
The programme combines innovative classroom teaching methods with unique scenario-based learning, enabling students to dynamically engage with real-world policy challenges. Scenarios are designed to help students consolidate knowledge and develop essential practical skills and their understanding of principles. During the programme, students acquire a comprehensive range of relevant skills.

Careers

Graduates with Development, Technology and Innovation Policy MPA degrees will typically work in government agencies, corporate regulatory affairs departments or within advocacy groups doing legislative, regulatory or policy analysis. The career path for this type of profession begins as research or policy assistant, moves through policy or research analyst, then to technical consultant or project director or other senior professional roles. Management Research Method
The learning objective of this course is to enable you to conduct empirical business research in a valid and reliable manner. You learn how to formulate research questions and to identify an appropriate research plan and methodology for the given set of research questions. This includes methodologies how to define unit of analysis and sample as well as methodologies how to collect, analyze and interpret data.

Entrepreneurship: Shaping Entrepreneurial Thinking
This course will enable you to develop entrepreneurial thinking and behaviour and to start your own firm based on your business ideas. Students develop and evaluate business ideas and learn how to develop a compelling business case based on entrepreneurial market research. The course furthermore includes the decision on the appropriate legal form for their new venture and new venture financing.

Classic and Contemporary Readings in Innovation and Entrepreneurship
The course enables students to create two forms of competences. 1) An improved ability to read, question, and form conclusions from research-based literature, and 2) an overview of the central classic and contemporary literature in the field of innovation and entrepreneurship. Together these competencies provide students with the ability to critically evaluate and choose relevant literature in the field of innovation and entrepreneurship.

New Product Development Clinic
The learning objective is to enable you to understand and execute the crucial tasks in the new product development process from idea generation to commercialisation. The course takes a concrete development problem as point of departure. Students will generate ideas for the solution of this problem and then carry out concept testing, prototype development, market assessment and pre-launch activities. Therefore, you will experience all the challenges in the new product development process hands-on. The course will be co-taught with faculty from Aarhus BSS and Aarhus School of Engineering. The teaching method of the course is project-based.

SPECIALISATION COURSES

Appropriating innovation – Managing Intellectual property rights
In this course the aim is to develop an understanding of how intellectual property rights, particularly patents, can be used as tools for technology development. A short introduction to the history and theory of patents is followed by an examination of the use of patents as tools of technology development. The course will also consider the evidence in support of the theory that patents on significant inventions are used to control and block 'downstream' innovation. Furthermore, the course will consider the 'anti-trust'- patent so-called 'interface' and recent changes to policy in favour of patents in the US.

Organising for Innovation
In this course the aim is to develop an understanding of the firm-internal perspective and context on innovation. This includes the formulation of and decision for innovation strategies, organisational structures and designs for innovation, creativity and performance within innovation teams, cooperation between R&D and marketing in the new product development process, champions and promotors of innovation, the management of radical innovation and the measurement of innovation performance.

Open and User-Driven Innovation
Shorter product life cycles and increased technological complexity of new products and services force firms to increasingly open their innovation processes to external sources of innovation. The learning objective of this course is therefore to enable you to understand which relevant sources of innovation exist outside the firm and how a firm can systematically use these external sources as leverage for new product development and for enhancing the innovative capability of a firm. The course includes emerging forms of open and distributed innovation. Specific focus will be given to user-driven innovation, including market orientation in the new product development process, lead user innovation, user communities and user toolkits.

In the third semester you can choose elective courses within your areas of interest. The courses can either be taken at Aarhus BSS during the semester, at the Summer University or at one of our more than 200 partner universities abroad. You can also participate in internship programmes either in Denmark or abroad.

The fourth semester is devoted to the master's thesis. You may choose the topic of the thesis freely and get a chance to concentrate on and specialize in a specific field of interest. The thesis may be written in collaboration with another student or it may be the result of your individual effort. When the thesis has been submitted it is defended before the academic advisor as well as an external examiner.

City’s MSc in Health Policy gives you the knowledge and tools you need to understand, analyse and influence the health policy process, and to operate within an increasingly complex policy environment.

You will analyse the social, political and economic factors that affect policy at a local, national and international level. You will explore how and where policy is made, and who the key players are; and learn how to present your ideas clearly and persuasively to a range of influential stakeholders to bring about change.

Placements

You have the opportunity to do a placement, but it is not a formal requirement of the course. We encourage you to create your own. One recent student worked within the refugee camp in Calais alongside the NGO Doctors of the World as part of her dissertation research on refugee access to health care.

The Master's in Public Policy (MPP) is a practice oriented programme that was launched by the department in October 2013. The course runs for 9 months from October to June.

The course aims to strengthen the interconnections between science, research and innovation in public policy. Integral to these aims, the MPP will promote better awareness within policy circles of scientific developments and emerging technologies, which in turn will encourage long-term thinking and better strategic planning.

Purpose

The MPP programme will qualify its graduates to:

- Cope with different forms of information, qualitative and quantitative with varying degrees of precision, relevance and uncertainty
- Consider issues from a range of disciplinary perspectives
- Spot what is missing, and how to recognize when the picture is incomplete
- Critically appraise information from different kinds of experts
- Integrate different forms of thinking
- Consider the implications of complexity, risk and uncertainty in policy-making

The course seeks to attract students who want to build careers in public policy whether in government at national and international levels, or in the third sector or in the private sector. The MPP will provide students with a thorough intellectual grounding and practical experience in the processes of policy making, as well as an understanding of the range of knowledge and skills they need to be effective in the world of policy.

The course draws on teaching from across six schools of the University, from the Department of Computer Science to the Department of Philosophy as well as from policy professionals from the public, private and voluntary sectors.

Candidates for the MPhil in Public Policy take 7 modules and 3 case studies across the course of the year. In addition they must complete two independent essays on topics agreed with their supervisor and a report on their work placement.

Leadership, Management and Innovation in Health Care Course Structure

The Leadership, Management and Innovation in Health Care is a two year, part-time course (2016-18). There are six 20 credit modules, each run over eight weeks in part one. Students will have face to face teaching for 25 hours per module. The modules are taught over three residential days in week one of the module, followed up with webinars/seminars in weeks two and three.

Part two consists of a 60 credit dissertation module, and will be completed in the second year.

Careers and Employability

Leadership, Management and Innovation in Health Care students will be employed as trainee general managers in Health Boards across Wales from September 2016 and will have access to a two-year work based learning programme delivered by Academi Wales that will build their core managerial capability, staff engagement skills, financial acumen, and ability to deliver change and improvements. This Master’s award is a component of the NHS Graduate Management Trainee Scheme: trainees will study towards a postgraduate level qualification, the MSc/ PGDip/PGCert Leadership, Management and Innovation in Health Care.

Successful exit from the training scheme will include the award of MSc Leadership, Management and Innovation in Health Care.

You'll undertake an independent piece of research or a large-scale multimedia website and/or mobile application addressing a specific innovation gap or entrepreneurial opportunity related to digital entrepreneurship. The research dissertation should be no longer than 10,000 words. If you choose to develop a multimedia application you must provide an accompanying 3,000 word critical analysis essay reflecting on the production process. You'll be allocated to an appropriate supervisor.

Students on the MSc Management of Innovation programme can choose 45 credits of options. -Consumer Behaviour (15 credits) – The psychology of decision making, the rational and irrational human, heuristics, priming, and information processing. This module introduces pricing strategies, individual differences in consumers, and legal issues in analytics and analysis of consumer behaviours. This module helps you understand individual consumers and target markets for the development of innovative products and services.

-Entrepreneurial Modeling (30 credits) – This module aims to nurture the skills and attitudes of students to allow them to become innovators and to provide models of entrepreneurial/business support relevant and useful for creative entrepreneurs. The module has evolved from NESTA’s Creative Pioneer Programme and will use the Modelling Techniques that were designed and have evolved from industry best practices that provide approaches to commercialising creativity. It will look at the range of business models that exist and review how best to build a financially sustainable organisation. Students produce a full and robust business plan for a new venture.

-Leadership & Talent Management (15 credits) – You learn about methods for assessing and nurturing leadership potential and talent along with approaches to enhancing and motivating leaders. The module uses case materials and practical examples introducing the importance of theory and research-based practice in these fields.

-Psychology of Marketing and Advertising (15 credits) – Students learn the traditional form of marketing: targeting, differentiation, loyalty, and buying behaviour and contrast this with emerging market views on physical and mental availability. The module explores the present and future of marketing strategies building on understandings of consumer behaviours and behavioural economics. The roles of communication strategies and cognitive psychology are taught in relation to advertising effectiveness and channel strategies.

-Research Design and Applied Statistics (15 credits) – Students learn to critically evaluate effective research design and analysis of data in work environments. The module aims to equip you with the skills to collect, code, analyse and interpret data; to understand how to design quantitative studies to ethically test hypotheses; to use analysis software; and to present data appropriately in text, tables and figures.

-Training and Development (15 credits) – Performance appraisal; training needs analysis; training design and delivery; employee development (eg. appraisal, 360-degree feedback, development centres); leadership; practical and strategic issues.

The MSc in Medicine, Health and Public Policy addresses the nature and policy implications of developments in health and medicine from social scientific and ethical perspectives. It is designed for graduates who wish to develop specialist understanding of the complex interconnections between (1) changing social, economic and political contexts, (2) advances in the biosciences and technological innovation, and (3) the health and wellbeing of individuals and communities. Drawing on concepts, theories and methods from the social sciences and from philosophy and ethics, students are encouraged to combine rigorous theoretical analysis with concrete, problem-based and policy-relevant research addressing key issues and controversies relevant to recent developments in health and medicine.

Course structure

The MSc in Agri-Environmental Economics and Policy is studied over one year full-time or two years part-time and is divided into two stages: eight taught modules (seven of which are compulsory) and a dissertation.

The compulsory modules provide a basis for you to acquire the basic skills for the programme, regardless of your first degree background, while the optional module enables you to acquire a broader understanding of the issues in growth and development, trade and development, or further your skills in econometrics. All MSc students take a module in Research Methods, which provides practical skills and knowledge for MSc-level research.

All of our MSc programmes require some mathematical analysis, and we recognise that students have widely differing backgrounds in mathematics. The first week of all our MSc programmes includes compulsory intensive teaching in mathematics, refreshing and improving your skills in order to equip you with the techniques you will need for the rest of the programme.

Students who successfully pass the taught element of the programme, proceed to the dissertation stage, where you undertake a supervised project of your choice on an applied issue in environmental economics. Advice on choice of dissertation topic and management is given during the taught stage of the programme. The dissertation stage develops students’ research skills and follows on from the Research Methods module. Student dissertations are supervised by academic staff.

Global health at Queen Mary

The MSc Global Public Health and Policy builds on models of social determinants of health and international health concepts of policy-making at the extra-territorial level. Students can specialise in areas as diverse as trade in health, global burden of disease, evidence-based policy making, pharmaceuticals, clinical trials, and ethics. Through these they will gain an understanding of the local and global policy issues impacting on public health and global health, so that they will be able to advocate more effectively on behalf of public health and public services.

This global health policy masters is part of a wider programme of study in international and global health. Underpinned by a commitment to the principles of social justice and fairness, these programmes will provide students with an understanding of the significance of the current global challenges for health care and public health, and will offer a multidisciplinary focus on global health in a time of increasing health inequalities.

Queen Mary is committed to teaching and researching global health, and has assembled for this initiative an experienced team from across the university, led by professors who have previously established and run successful and highly prestigious programmes both online and on campus. Prof Allyson Pollock is one of the UK's leading public intellectuals in medicine, and is a world authority on global health and public health policy. Prof Trish Greenhalgh is one of the international stars of general practice, a leading educationalist in international primary health and enormously influential in primary health research. The programmes are based in the Centre for Primary Care and Public Health, which is responsible for leading global health teaching in the Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry, the leading UK medical school for global health in the undergraduate medical curriculum.

Who is this programme for?

The global public health and policy programme is of particular interest to public health doctors and other health practitioners in public and primary health care, but will also attract policy makers and NGO workers as well as social and laboratory scientists. Dealing with global health and policy, the programme is concerned with underlying principles, and so is of relevance to those working or planning to work locally in London, in the UK, or anywhere in the world where these principles apply, and at the local, national, or international level.

Programme outline

In the first semester modules develop the key concepts and research methods and analysis for studying global health and health systems. These present students with relevant methodological issues and challenges while providing interdisciplinary foundations. In the second semester students gain a more detailed understanding of areas of special relevance to global public health policy through the specialist module, Social Determinants of Health: Ecological Approaches, and through elective modules that allow them to focus on the aspects of public policy or global health of most interest to them.
