COURSE SUMMARY

This course will further the knowledge, skills and abilities of sports rehabilitators, sport therapists, physiotherapists and other allied health professionals currently working in the area of sports injury rehabilitation and prevention.

This was the first exercise rehabilitation masters in Europe to be recognised by the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) though their recognition programme. The programme is delivered by some of the world's leading experts. The contact sessions on campus, including keynote sessions followed by practical and seminar sessions, are applicable immediately to professional practice and involve a high practical content.

COURSE STRUCTURE

The MSc programme is offered as either a full-time or part-time programme.

The full time course runs over three academic semesters (October through to September the following year), whilst  giving you the chance to exit with the following awards:

  • Postgraduate Certificate: completion of one module
  • Postgraduate Diploma: completion of two modules
  • Masters: completion of two modules plus a dissertation

In order to achieve an award of MSc Sports Injury Rehabilitation you must successfully complete the modules Rehabilitation of Musculoskeletal Injuries and Injury Prevention and Performance Measurement, along with producing a thesis for the dissertation module.

TEACHING

This course is available both part-time and full-time and is delivered via a blended learning approach, which includes:

Workshops (three days per module, per semester)

These are interactive, discursive, reflective, participatory, collaborative and practice related and employ a variety teaching and learning methods. As the programme progresses these will become progressively more student led, with you presenting case studies for peer and tutor review.

Individual Scholarly Activity

Self directed learning, personal reflection, practice based application and reflection, including peer and tutor review.

Distance Learning Resources

Delivery of supporting resources such as study guides and lecture material online. Facilitated group work, including tutor and peer evaluation are a key component of this course. 

Personal Tutor and Peer Support

To provide an academic, practice based and personal support mechanism alongside facilitated networking.

During the course of the MSc, there are opportunities for some students to gain highly relevant clinical experience through case demonstrations and voluntary/paid work at the Blackheath Brain Injury Rehabilitation Centre and Neurodisability Service or in one of the several clinical sites we collaborate with. In some cases, there may also be the possibility of carrying out research for your dissertation in these clinical settings.

Methods and Techniques pathway

This programme is intended primarily for graduates in Psychology, or closely related disciplines, who want to pursue further academic research (MPhil/PhD) in neuroscience and to teach in higher education. During the MSc, students will receive highly relevant hands-on training in essential methods and techniques used in contemporary cognitive neuroscience research.

Research Project (60 credits)
The project requires you to carry out an empirically or theoretically based psychological project, which can be in any area of Cognitive Neuropsychology, Development Cognitive Neuropsychology, Brain stimulation or Neuroimaging (EEG). You will give an oral presentation of your project in addition to providing a full written report.

Assessment:
The programme is assessed by written examinations, coursework, an oral presentation, journal club and a research dissertation.

Skills

The programme will provide you with knowledge of theory and practical issues relevant to neuroscience and clinical psychology in the UK health services and research centres. The two pathways allow students to shape their study plan according to their interests and career objectives. You will have the opportunity to develop your own research project under the supervision of a member of staff and relevant external clinical/research sector staff.

Members of the planning and teaching team come from multidisciplinary backgrounds and have considerable experience of implementing and teaching on Master's level courses. The team also has a range and depth of experience in both service delivery and research in rehabilitation.

We have considerable experience in neurological and elderly rehabilitation and have contributed or been responsible for service delivery in both acute and community healthcare, as well as the voluntary and independent sector.

There is also specific expertise in the rehabilitation of individuals with stroke, dementia, acute brain injury, pain management, cardiac and chronic pulmonary disease, falls, progressive neurological disease and palliative care.

The course programme will suit graduates in Sport Sciences or Physical Therapy who are interested in exercise rehabilitation in particular. It has been designed to be flexible and relevant to the student’s individual needs and interests, with a strong emphasis on the application of theory to professional practice. Within the modular structure all students undertake core/compulsory modules in:

Research Skills;
Independent Study (a one to one supervised programme of work leading to the development of the proposal for the Research Project);
Supervised Experience – a module tailored to the needs of the individual and could include directed work with a specified client group or individual patient;
Research Project relevant to the programme being studied.
Research Skills
Research Skills is a double credit taught module. Students study the broad nature of the research process that will allow them to complete, initially, an appropriate Independent Study (in which a research proposal for the Research Project is completed) and subsequently, a full Research Project. The module covers material relevant to the design and analysis of both quantitative and qualitative research. It also provides a broad understanding of the benefits and limitations of various research methods, research designs, data collection instruments and data analysis tools. Students are given the opportunity to develop their ability to be critically evaluative.

Specific content includes: Statistical issues in quantitative research and design; Simple and multiple (forced entry, moderated and mediated) regression analyses; Single factor analysis of variance with and without repeated measures; Two factor analysis of variance with and without repeated measures; Single factor and two factor multivariate analysis of variance (with and without repeated measures); Repeated measures analysis of variance using the multivariate solution; Doubly repeated measures analysis of variance; Analysis of covariance; Follow-up procedures for all of the above; Assumptions underpinning all of the above and available options for dealing with violations to these assumptions; Experiments and causal inference; External and construct validity; Experimental and quasi-experimental designs; Correlational and epidemiological research; Reliability and validity in quantitative and qualitative research; Issues in qualitative research and design; Interviews; Single case design and analysis; Observation; Narrative; Ethnography; grounded theory and discourse analysis.

Independent Study
The Independent Study should consist of a critical and concise review of the research literature pertaining to a particular research question. A rationale for the proposed research question must be provided, along with a sound methodology for exploring the research question, planned analyses, and expected outcomes. Further, anticipated problems such as resources, equipment, possible ethical issues, informed consent forms, a statement of feasibility of the project and expected costs must be discussed.

Supervised Experience
The content of this module will be largely student specific and include activities (workshops, directed reading, client based work) that will develop the individual’s personal applied support skills. Initially, students complete an individual self-assessment of their current skills/knowledge base and set personal goals to enable them to improve their applied support skills. All students will attend units (workshops) on Ethics in Research and consultancy, communication and counselling skills and how to conduct a needs assessment. Specific physiology and psychology workshops (e.g. Imagery) will also take place.

Students will complete a contract of intended activities agreed with their supervisor in the first four weeks of their programme of study. This contract may, where appropriate, include the intention to apply to British Association of Sport and Exercise Science (BASES) to commence a formally logged Supervised Experience.

A portfolio will then be developed; the portfolio records activities including meetings with supervisor, attendance at workshops, meetings and a plan of work with at least one client, and thought/evaluations of all meetings and workshops (i.e. evidence of reflective practice).

Overview and Format of the Research Project module
The Research Project is an independent piece of research, and acts as the culmination of the academic challenges faced by the student. The module comprises 60 credits (ie equivalent to three double modules) and will formally equate to some 600 hours of student time.

Specifically, this will involve a review of research evidence with the aim of formulating an appropriate research question, and will likely involve some refinement and pilot work. Once achieved, the student will implement a research design and method suited to the area of enquiry. The supervisor provides excellent expert guidance throughout the process.

Mono-disciplinary studies and interdisciplinary work, which might involve the student’s ongoing sport/exercise experience, will be encouraged. Each topic will normally involve data collection, analysis and interpretation and allow students to demonstrate their powers of imagination, initiative, independence and time management. Students will be expected to show a thorough knowledge of the relevant sources of information and the ability to use them with discrimination; to provide full references; to exercise sound and independent judgment; to structure work logically and to express themselves with clarity and precision.

In addition to the above, students also undertake compulsory modules in Clinical Exercise Physiology (including disease and aging), Exercise Psychology and Rehabilitation of the Injured Athlete. This latter module covers theoretical perspectives in sports injury rehabilitation; psychological response to sports injury; the role of confidence in injury and rehabilitation; exercise, training principles and biomechanics of rehabilitation; plus returning the athlete to competition; failure to rehabilitate; current trends in injury rehabilitation research and future research directions; and critical assessment of sports rehabilitation research.

The programme is delivered using a variety of teaching methods, including lectures, seminars, workshops, group activities, practical work, tutorials and role play. Each module comprises approximately 200 hours (including formal contact).

You will also have the opportunity to gain a REPs* accredited Level 2 Gym Instructor vocational qualification free of charge to supplement your MSc academic qualification. This will depend on prior learning and it is expected that MSc students on the Exercise Rehabilitation programme will be able to gain this qualification by carrying out approximately half the typical work load. This vocational qualification is a required qualification within the exercise referral industry.

The Master of Rehabilitation Counselling (MRehabClng) prepares graduates for professional practice as rehabilitation counsellors. Graduates attain professional status as a rehabilitation counsellor and are qualified to provide specialist counselling, rehabilitation, and case management services to people who have experienced injury, disability or social disadvantage.

The course includes studies in vocational development and counselling, applied psychosocial and medical rehabilitation, case management, client assessment and job placement, work injury and worker's compensation, and rehabilitation philosophy. Elective studies may be undertaken in rehabilitation in relation to alcohol and drug misuse, psychiatric rehabilitation, developmental disabilities, or special interests as approved by the Course Director.

After completing the research project, the Master of Research (a minimum of 180 credits) will be awarded.

How you will be taught

Teaching of this MRes Sports Biomechanics and Rehabilitation will primarily be through a combination of flexible learning modules and formal lectures.

Assignments and coursework will foster the development of an enquiry-led, self-directed student approach to learning.

Assessment of modules 1-4 will be by examination upon completion of each individual module and a summative assessment on completion of all four modules. Assessment is weighted - 80% exam and 20% coursework.

During the research project, learning will be partly experiential, partly directed and partly self-directed. The research project will be assessed through the presentation of a dissertation, and the final mark will be moderated through an oral exam in Dundee (90 credits).

Careers

This MRes Sports Biomechanics and Rehabilitation will prepare graduates for a research-focused clinical graduate career in either the NHS or academia, and is particularly well positioned to prepare for entry into a clinical academic career path if you are a clinical graduate. Those students not already in academia or the NHS will broaden their scope of being able to do so and additionally benefit from the multitude of opportunities in the public and private sectors involving sport and exercise.

The qualification provides flexibility to rehabilitation professionals who wish to undertake a programme with highly specialised content that focuses on advanced skills of sports therapy and rehabilitation, to facilitate and develop experiential learning and evidence-based practice.

What you study

The programme commences with a comprehensive induction where you will be introduced to the other students, the staff on the programme and the VLE where all learning materials and programme documents will be situated, and through which online activities will be conducted. All online facilities will be explored during interactive sessions as part of the induction period and you will be familiar with the tools by the end of the first part of the onsite taught module. Tutorial support will continue online throughout the course via programme and module leaders.

Teaching

A range of face-to-face contact and online learning, teaching and assessment strategies will be employed in the various modules. The key methods of learning and teaching are a mix of online activities and face-to-face Professional development workshops.

Online activities will include individual and group problem based learning, facilitated online via Wiki, discussion workshops supported via [email protected] CPD workshops will require attendance at the University and will involve practical workshops and problem based learning activities. No previous online learning experience is needed as you will be introduced to and practice all the tools we will use during the induction period and first taught element.

Assessments vary from CPD portfolio, essay / report, e-presentation, critical review, journal article to give a wide variety of experience in presenting your research in a various media formats.

Using a problem-based learning and practical skills development approach, you will gain an advanced understanding of: assessment, diagnosis and rehabilitation of a range of health and sports related conditions and develop these skills through supervised clinical experience. Practical experience is an essential element of the programme and over the course of the programme you will attain 400 hours of supervised clinical experience in a range of settings. Teaching

A wide variety of teaching strategies appropriate to each module is used, including formal lectures and tutorials, seminars, online learning, practical workshops, problem-based learning, work-based learning, guest speakers and student-led research projects.

You have the opportunity to develop continuing professional development throughout all modules on the programme. The delivery of modules is via blended learning, which uses a combination of face-to-face learning and online delivery. The modules have a site in the University’s virtual learning environment (Blackboard), which adheres as a minimum to the University’s Threshold Quality Standards.

Assessment methods include assignments, critical review, presentations, portfolios and practical examinations.

These methods allow you to demonstrate a critical and systematic understanding and application of the relevant curriculum. Professional and key transferable skills are also developed through these assessments. You are required to undertake appropriate research, using the skills developed in the core modules and this provides the impetus for the development of your project proposal. The sport and exercise research project module gives you the opportunity to demonstrate an appropriate standard of research and enquiry into a specialist area, selected by you, displaying an original and/or compelling study or review of that area.

Sport Rehabilitation is a dynamic profession focusing on understanding, preventing and treating sport and exercise related injuries. It takes an evidence-based approach considering anatomical, physiological, biomechanical, and psychosocial factors. The course aims to provide graduates from a sports science background with the knowledge and application of the musculoskeletal system, enabling them to clinically assess and return athletes to full functional fitness through expertly developed evidence-based rehabilitation programmes. Students will develop key practical skills in our teaching clinic and world class sports science laboratories and we blend this with online technologies to enhance remote study. Intense teaching periods enable students opportunities to apply and develop their knowledge through work-based learning in our sports injury clinic. A minimum of 400 clinical hours of hands-on experience will be obtained in our Sports Therapy and Rehabilitation Clinic.

In addition, students undertake professional work placements with our partners to broaden their experience. Graduates will be eligible to join the British Association of Sport Rehabilitators and Trainers (BASRaT) (pending, subject to validation). Foundation clinical and rehabilitation skills are developed through a blended learning approach. Integral periods of work-based learning and research skills development are embedded in the programme to enable students to apply an evidence-based approach towards sport rehabilitation. Students can also get accreditation to the Federation of Holistic Therapists (FHT). This is a new course starting in 2017 and is currently subject to validation.

Career Prospects

Graduates of the MSc in Sport Rehabilitation will be eligible to join BASRaT, the professional body overseeing and regulating the practice of Sport Rehabilitators and Trainers in this country. The 400 clinical placement hours required for BASRAT membership are included in the Evidence Based Practice and Clinical Placement module. BASRaT also has a minimum attendance requirement for lectures, practicals and seminars. To qualify for BASRaT membership students must complete and pass an Immediate Care in Sport (Level 2) course, which is included.

Postgraduate Scheme

The Postgraduate Scheme in Rehabilitation Sciences comprises the following awards:

‌•MSc in Manipulative Physiotherapy
‌•MSc in Occupational Therapy
‌•MSc in Rehabilitation of People with Development Disabilities
‌•MSc in Rehabilitation Sciences
‌•MSc in Sports Physiotherapy

The awards under this scheme admit students in alternate years:

‌•MSc in Manipulative Physiotherapy, MSc in Occupational Therapy and MSc in Sports Physiotherapy are offered in the same admission year.
‌•MSc in Rehabilitation of People with Developmental Disabilities and MSc in Rehabilitation Sciences are offered in the same admission year.

English Language Requirement

If you are not a native speaker of English, or your Bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification is awarded by institutions where the medium of instruction is not English, you are expected to fulfil the following minimum English language requirement for admission purpose, unless otherwise specified by individual programmes concerned:

‌•A Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of 80 for the Internet-based test or 550 for the paper-based test, OR
‌•An overall Band Score of at least 6 in the International English Language Testing System (IELTS).

Individual cases will be considered on their own merit. Applicants may be required to attend interviews or tests to further demonstrate their language proficiency.
