This MSc is designed to give clinicians and practitioners a deeper understanding of sports medicine, sports injuries and exercise medicine. The programme covers the evidence-based management of sports medicine and musculoskeletal injuries, and emphasises the vital role of physical activity in the prevention and treatment of chronic disease. This MSc can be taken full time over one year, part-time over two years, or via flexible distance learning.

Degree information

The programme focuses on sports injuries and their prevention and treatment, and provides a thorough grounding in relevant areas of anatomy, biomechanics, exercise physiology and psychology, as well as the fundamentals of exercise in maintaining and improving health. Students develop essential research skills through an independent research project.

All students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of seven core modules (105 credits), one optional module (15 credits) and a research project (60 credits). Clinical sessions are spread over the year: commitment is equivalent to one half-day per week over three 12-week semesters. Clinic options include sports injury, physiotherapy and podiatry, exercise testing, and team visits.

A Postgraduate Diploma (120 credits, full-time nine months) is offered.

Dissertation/report
All MSc students undertake an independent research project from a diverse range of available topics, which culminates in a dissertation, an oral examination and a presentation.

Teaching and learning
Teaching is delivered through a combination of formal lectures, hands-on practical sessions, small group seminars, clinics and field trips, and will be delivered by lecturers who are highly experienced in their field. Up-to-date, evidence-based practice will be emphasised throughout and students' contribution through discussion is considered key. Assessment is through written examination, presentations, coursework and Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE), as well as the dissertation and viva voce (oral) examination.

Graduates of the programme will gain a deeper understanding and valuable insights into the key areas of sports injury prevention and management, health and physical activity, and will be able to prescribe exercise safely for a range of medical conditions. Immediate management of the sporting emergency on the field of play is also taught on this innovative programme of study. This programme is part of the interdisciplinary Specialist Skills and Post Registration Development (SSPRD) Framework within the Faculty of Health Studies. The Framework enables you to undertake a named award or create an individualised programme of study that will meet either your needs and/or your employer’s needs for a changing diverse workforce within a modern organisation.

The SSPRD Framework offers a structure within which students undertaking the MSc Advanced Practice and named awards have a wide choice of modules. Whilst some students can build their own awards by choosing their own menu of module options the module choice on specialist, named award pathways is more clearly defined. If you are a UK student your programme of study will not only focus on research informed knowledge and understanding but will also extend your skills and competence in practice. International students will focus on modules that assess application to practice through a more reflective approach. The module choice for international students and UK students who are not working in a healthcare setting is restricted to those modules with an ‘international’ version.

Your programme of study and the collection of modules you may choose to study will contextualise your learning by addressing the Aims and Learning Outcomes for the programme which are outlined in the next section of this document. You will also critically analyse the current recommendations for the prevention of sports injuries and demonstrate practical competency in the delivery of peripheral and vertebral manual therapy techniques. You will demonstrate the ability to plan, design and conduct an individual piece of research and demonstrate suitable levels of competency and professionalism within the work place as expected by industry standards.
Our Masters programme in Sports Therapy runs over one year full-time. Individual modules may also be taken as part of a continuing professional development programme.

Through 100 hours of supervised practical experience in a clinical setting of your choice, you will implement your practical skills and develop skills in reflective practice.

Through a combination of lecture based learning and independent study, you will study a range of qualitative and quantitative methods in order to design and conduct an independent research thesis.

The programme provides doctors, physiotherapists and osteopaths interested in sport and exercise medicine with:
- The necessary scientific background knowledge to appreciate the issues arising in the field of sport and exercise medicine.

- Up-to-date training in modern methods of diagnosing and treating sports injuries, including emergency care.

- The necessary skills and knowledge to provide advice on the prevention of sports injuries.

MSc
Students successfully progressing through the taught course onto MSc will be expected to conduct an original piece of research (6,500 – 8,000 words or equivalent) on an aspect of applied sport and exercise medicine. They will be assigned a tutor to support them in their research.​

Learning & Teaching​

Teaching and learning methods will include workshops, lectures, clinical assessments, student presentations and individual study. Clinical skills will be taught in small groups with students required to participate as patients, examiners and examinees. Students will be able to access remotely all lectures via a virtual learning environment; internet and online search facilities can be accessed via the university learning resources web page.

Participation in a clinical placement in sport and exercise medicine environment/sports injuries clinic; delivery from a wide range of professionals involved in sport and exercise medicine and sport and exercise science, and the opportunity to work with fellow professionals who are involved in supporting elite performers at national and international level will also be offered as part of the programme.

Assessment

All modules will be assessed by coursework and the clinical attachment will be assessed by a viva voce examination. Clinical competence will be assessed via an objective structured clinical experience (OSCE).

The Postgraduate Diploma course is based on the Royal College of Physicians Specialty Training curriculum. The online course lasts one calendar year and is a part time distance learning course. It consists of 6 modules per year, each of 6 weeks duration.

Each of the 6 modules has the same assessment format. Due to the online nature of the course, students are expected to login and participate in the course regularly throughout the module (ideally on a daily basis).

Students are split into groups of 10-15 students and are assigned a dedicated expert tutor who:

MSc teaching methods for this module of our Sports and Exercise Medicine MSc are similar to the PG Diploma course modules however it is run over 12 weeks.

Module 2 - Professional Project

To produce the professional project, students continue to use the online course however much of the work is self-directed.

Students are expected in the first 8 weeks to interact with their tutor on a weekly basis. Students select a specific project and submit a project summary/proposal (approximately 1500 words).

Once the proposal has been approved, the professional project (10,500 words) itself is then completed through online guidance and supervision offered by the tutor. The student and tutor will interact regularly (weekly) on the dedicated students/tutor discussion area or through any other means of communication deemed appropriate by both parties (telephone/SKYPE/email). - HES 512 - Introduction to Environmental Health & Safety Management

This course presents an overview of environmental health and safety (EH&S) management with its emphasis on preventing workplace injuries, illnesses, and fatalities. The importance of considering relevant science and engineering in all EH&S management decisions is emphasized. Governmental regulations and insurance matters affecting EH&S performance also are identified and discussed. Qualifications for employment in the field of EH&S management are described and current career opportunities are explored.

- HES 513- Occupational Health & Safety Law

This course will provide students with a fundamental understanding of issues that can impact upon private sector employers under the Federal Occupational Safety and Health Act, including rule making, the duty to comply with standards, General Duty Clause, requirements at multi-employer worksites, record-keeping, employer and employee rights, refusal to work and whistle blower protection, hazard communication, voluntary safety and health audits, inspections and investigations, citations, criminal enforcement, and judicial review. This course will also provide students with an introduction to peripheral “toxic tort” law concepts that should be understood by Safety and Health Managers including theories of liability, CERCLA liability, employer liability, tort defenses, causation, injuries, damages, and mass tort actions.

- HES 514- Health & Safety Regulations & Regulatory Compliance

This course addresses regulatory compliance as an important objective of all EH & S managers and the companies they represent. Focus is directed to workplace regulations of the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). The purpose, history, structure, jurisdiction, and operations of the agency are presented. Major health and safety standards that have been promulgated by OSHA are considered in some detail. Students learn how their organization can prepare for and respond to OSHA inspections effectively.

- HES 516- Practical Statistics for Safety Professionals

This course provides students with an introduction to basic research methods and statistical analysis for safety managers. Students will be introduced to foundational concepts of problem statement development, variables, hypothesis testing, and research design. Additionally, relevant descriptive and inferential statistic used in the field of Occupational Health and Safety will be covered with an emphasis on the interpretation of results. Students will learn a variety of descriptive and inferential statistical techniques. The inferential techniques include an emphasis on statistical inference that is commonly used in safety management (e.g., t-tests and correlation). The course is designed to provide the student with an understanding of the basic research methods and statistical concepts required by safety managers to identify and mitigate risks using quantitative measures.

This course will provide students with a framework understanding of key federal environmental statutes and regulatory requirements that are likely to impact upon the day-to-day operation of a business or industrial facility that a company's Safety and Health Manager should be familiar with, including the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA), Emergency Planning and Community Right to Know Act (EPCRA), Underground Storage Tank (UST) program, Clean Air Act (CAA), Clean Water Act (CWA), Oil Pollution Act (OPA), Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) and Federal Insecticide, Fungicide and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA).

- CSM 537- Developing the Leader Within

This course takes an in-depth look at leadership theories, principles, qualities, styles, and models with a focus on developing leadership skills and potential within the individual students. Graduates of the MSc in Sport Rehabilitation will be eligible to join BASRaT, the professional body overseeing and regulating the practice of Sport Rehabilitators and Trainers in this country. The 400 clinical placement hours required for BASRAT membership are included in the Evidence Based Practice and Clinical Placement module. BASRaT also has a minimum attendance requirement for lectures, practicals and seminars. To qualify for BASRaT membership students must complete and pass an Immediate Care in Sport (Level 2) course, which is included.

2. Programme objectives & purpose

The objective of the programme is to generate graduates with a sound grounding in engineering fundamentals (analysis, design and problem solving), but who also have the multi-disciplinary breadth that includes knowledge of human biology and clinical needs and applications, to be able to make an immediate impact in the field on graduation, in either the academic research or medical technology industry domains. Ultimately the programme aims to generate the future leaders of the national and international medical technology industry, and of academic research and teaching in biomedical engineering.

3. What’s special about CoEI/NUIG in this area:

• NUI Galway pioneered the development of educational programmes in Biomedical Engineering in Ireland, introducing the country’s first bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering in 1998, that was the first to achieve professional accreditation from Engineers Ireland in 2004, and at the graduate level with the Structured PhD programme in Biomedical Engineering and Regenerative Medicine (BMERM) in 2011.
• NUI Galway has been at the forefront of world-class research in biomedical engineering for over 20 years and has pioneered multi-disciplinary research in biomedical engineering and science, with the establishment of the National Centre for Biomedical Engineering Science (NCBES) in 1999, and up to the present day with the announcement of NUI Galway as the lead institution in a new Science Foundation Ireland funded Centre for Research in Medical Devices (CÚRAM).
