This fully accredited programme draws on our many years of experience in delivering advanced programmes in structures and bridges. It is delivered by university academics with a keen interest and track record in infrastructure issues together with industry and government professionals.

PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

This course covers the planning, design, analysis and management frameworks of infrastructure systems. In particular, you will develop expertise in the:
-Technical aspects of infrastructure engineering within a social, economic, environmental and political context
-Factors that affect and drive infrastructure planning and funding
-Interdependent nature of infrastructure across different sectors

You will qualify with a sound understanding of the whole life-cycle of infrastructure assets, the environmental impact of infrastructure projects, and formal asset-management techniques enabling you to maximise the benefits of infrastructure assets in the future.

Graduates from the programme are highly employable but have the potential to progress to relevant specialist PhD or EngD research programmes in the field.

Professionals in construction management are at the heart of the delivery phase of buildings and infrastructure in every economy, and play an essential part in the realisation of the physical development aspiration of clients.

Society continues to value and shape the built environment resulting in both public and private investment in construction assets and the successful completion of construction projects. As these projects become more socially and technically complex in a changing world dominated by a concern for sustainability, there has been a growing challenge to develop existing and new skills and expertise in construction management. This challenge is not only national but global as the need for construction management skills continues to grow internationally. Indeed, our student cohorts reflect this global challenge with students from across multiple continents.

This particular programme benefits from being rooted in a long 40 year history of delivery. It has evolved and aligned itself with the challenge above to reinforce it as one of the most long-standing and successful Construction Management Masters programmes of its kind. The programme has and continues to be the flagship of our postgraduate programmes and is heavily subscribed and endorsed by the global construction management community.

The programme is designed for recent graduates from construction and related disciplines and introduces the fundamentals and challenges to contemporary construction management. Semester one, compulsory modules
- ICT for Construction Projects
This module introduces managers to a wide range of tools and technologies appropriate for their role and projects. The module covers a range of topics including project information flows, e-business, database technologies, emerging technologies, building information modelling technologies, groupware and collaborative systems.

- Research and Communication
The aims of this module are to provide the student with an overview of sources of information in construction; to explain to students how to conduct a literature review and introduce students to the principal methods of investigation in construction research; and provide an opportunity for each student to develop professional and academic skills in oral and written communication.

- Principles of Design and Construction
This module teaches students the fundamental principles of managing a project during the design and construction phases. The module develops knowledge and understanding of the role and principles of the estimating, tendering and planning of construction projects and the importance of health and safety in relation to design and construction activities.

- Principles of Project Management
Students will gain an understanding of construction project management principles and theory. Specific areas covered include management responsibility for running construction projects; contemporary issues facing the construction industry; cultural complexity and the impact of behaviour and motivation on performance; and applying appropriate project management techniques for the different project phases.

- Postgraduate Research Project
The aim of this module is to provide the student with experience of the process and methodology of research by defining and studying (on an individual basis) a complex problem in a specialised area relating to Construction Management.

- Management and Professional Development 1
The aim of this module is to enable students to plan, develop and demonstrate progress against a suitable professional development framework, such that they become equipped with a range of transferable management and professional development skills.

- Design Management
This module introduces various Design Management techniques and approaches. These include process mapping techniques for design; ways to analyse and optimise the design process; and students will gain an understanding of the internal workings of a design office and their relationship with the construction team.

- Sustainability in the Built Environment
Students will gain an understanding of sustainability issues that relate to the built environment; ways in which these issues can be managed and effective communication of both strategic and technical information.

- Management of Construction Processes
This module introduces students to cutting edge contemporary management concepts and innovations; complexities of setting up and managing logistics on large construction sites; and essential project management techniques such as risk management.

- Federated 3D Building Information Modelling (BIM)
The creation, deployment and use of aggregated and integrated models are key goals of collaboration through BIM. This module aims to deliver hands-on practical skills on the use of BIM technologies (i.e. design software and collaboration tools) for real-time co-creation and data sharing of federated/aggregated 3D BIM models. The concept of shared situational awareness within design teams/processes will be explored.

Option Modules Two
Choose two from:
- Strategic Management in Construction
The aim of this module is to introduce students to the fundamental concepts of strategic management and the tools for formulating and implementing strategies within the construction sector. The application of strategic management tools to develop appropriate change strategies will be explored and fundamental skills in communication, negotiation and leadership will be developed.

- People and Teams
Students will gain a knowledge and understanding of the key fundamental management principles and theory (such as motivation, teamwork, leadership, task management) and how they can be applied to managing people within the context of the construction project environment. Students will also be able to analyse current theoretical approaches to people management, appreciate importance of ethics and cultural issues and evaluate the key factors driving HRM systems.

- Procurement and Contract Procedure
This module aims to develop students understanding of procurement methods, different forms of contract and contract practice. The module is designed to give students key practical skills including advising clients on appropriate procurement and tendering methods; selecting the most appropriate form of construction contract; and manage a construction contract effectively.

- Business Economics and Finance
Students will gain a sound understanding of macro, meso and micro economics and types, sources and management of finance relating to construction organisations and projects. This will allow students to analyse the policies and operations of construction organisations and projects from an economic perspective to determine likely performance consequences and analyse corporate financial data for investment prospects and business management decisions.

Graduates are sought after by a wide range of companies including Arup, Atkins, Bauer Technologies, Carillion plc, Eurovia Group, Kier Group, Morgan Sindall, Skanska and Vinci Construction. Many of these organisations engage with the University in both collaborative research and in delivering lectures on the courses. Scholarships and bursaries

The University offers over 100 scholarships each year to new self-financing full-time international students who are permanently resident in a county outside the European Union. There is growing demand for infrastructure investment globally as traditional sources of public funding and finance can no longer be presumed to provide the required levels of capital. This innovative MSc considers the perspectives of procuring infrastructure as well as providing the private finance to deliver the required investments to close the infrastructure gap.

Degree information

With a strong commercial focus, this course provides candidates with a well-balanced mix of economic and financial theory as well as industry practice, including modules exploring:
-The history and future of infrastructure investment at global, national and sector levels, and the key determinants of total and sector investment levels.
-The impact of government policy, funding and private capital markets on investment in infrastructure.
-The role of regulation in incentivising private investment.
-The cost of capital for infrastructure investment and the allocation of risk in contracted delivery.
-The commercial perspective of infrastructure project sponsors, lenders, investors and contractors throughout the procurement, design, construction and operation of infrastructure assets.

MSc students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits. The programme consists of eight core modules (120 credits) and a research dissertation (60 credits). A Postgraduate Diploma, eight core modules (120 credits) is offered. There are no optional modules for this programme.

All students undertake a substantial research-based dissertation on a research question of their own choosing.

Teaching and learning
The MSc programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars, group tutorials/workshops, project briefings, and individual supervision for the research-based dissertation element. Assessment is through examinations, 3,000-word written term papers and the 10,000-word dissertation.

This MSc will equip graduates with the potential to become future innovators, leaders, senior managers, policymakers, researchers and teachers in the fields of finance, infrastructure ownership and project management industries. You will complete a total of five units (including your dissertation) involving attendance of six or eight days for each unit. You will study several key topics covering areas of project management theory and methods, while gaining an insight into their practical application in a business context.

Project Environment and Planning: You will develop an understanding of the relationship between project and business management, as well as the project management environment and the factors that influence project outcomes. Strategic aspects of projects are addressed, including project selection and portfolio design. You will also learn how project managers must understand the benefits to be delivered by projects, the requirements of stakeholders and how to work within the constraints of cost, time and quality. Estimation methods and planning techniques are taught together with quality management. Approaches to the planning and control of projects that have been developed in different sectors are also covered, including agile methods and fast tracking.

Budgets and Commercial Management: This unit introduces you to raising project finance, building, monitoring and controlling project budgets and measuring Earned Value of project deliverables. It also covers the commercial aspects of procurement including tendering, contracting and the skills and practices of contract and bid negotiation, providing you with the tools and techniques for managing project budgets. The units also examines the key roles that project managers, budget managers and key project personnel play in managing project budgets.

People Management and Risk: This unit develops a critical understanding of individual, team and organisational working in order to deliver project goals successfully. It covers how individual characteristics such as personality, intelligence, ability and skills, motivation and attitudes affect individual performance. You will learn how to empower individuals and teams to achieve quality standards which enhance personal team and organisational performance, together with the development of creative and credible leadership. It also examines the key challenges in the application of risk management frameworks and models in project management, crisis management and corporate governance. Risk management strategies and the development of effective project mitigation and contingency action plans are critically evaluated.

Project Investigation and Systems Methods: This unit explores the investigation of project issues through the use of a structured research methodology and project management analysis tools to enhance the research process. Wider strategic issues are explored to place the research process into context and to illustrate how appropriate research methods can be identified for specific types of research problems. You will also look at tools for the modelling and analysis of complex problem situations (including systems thinking, soft systems methods and influence diagrams) and how these can be used to diagnose problem situations to identify relevant areas for further investigation. Project management methodologies including PRINCE2, Partnering and Programme Management as a wider context for project management research issues are examined. You will produce a research proposal that brings together the use of research methodology and project systems in identifying, justifying and investigating a research question that will feed into the research conducted in your final dissertation.

Dissertation: This unit enables you to deepen your understanding of an aspect of project management of your own choice. Many students choose to investigate topics which they intend to focus on in the next stage of their career. The unit is structured as a research project so you can demonstrate your ability to identify, design, plan and undertake research on a specific project management issue and effectively communicate your findings in an appropriate manner for a Master’s degree.

Programme Assessment

The units are structured as eight teaching blocks of three days of lectures, seminars and interactive syndicate work, with periods of self-managed study between blocks. Each of these will be assessed by coursework assignments. You will also produce a dissertation with guidance from a supervisor. The dissertation is structured as an independent research project to deepen your understanding of a chosen aspect of project management. Your choice of topic can contribute towards the next stage of your career by demonstrating your ability to identify, design, undertake and communicate your original research on a specific project management topic.

Marine Spatial Planning is a new field arising from new legislation geared to sustainable use of the marine environment. New planning procedures are being introduced and new skills are required to engage with the process. It is aimed at environmental planners and consultants working with local authorities, regulatory bodies, government, land owners and NGOs.

It considers the organisational, human and cultural impact of facilities and ways in which improved services can affect facility performance. Within the course, ongoing performance measurement systems are also described which enable the effective management of service contracts.

•Space Planning and Management - mandatory
This course provides a strategic overview of space from a business perspective. It identifies the supply and demand process in relation to property portfolios and considers tools and techniques that enable the effective modelling and use of space. It examines the concept of flexibility and reuse in the context of a changing organisational context. Alternative space strategies are examined in the course in tandem with new ways of working. It also considers how space can be used to support work-life balance strategies in organisations.

•Asset Maintenance Management - mandatory
This course examines the effective management and maintenance of operational property. Key aspects include: maintenance policy and standards; planned and responsive maintenance; asset appraisal and evaluation; information management; maintenance; property portfolios; acquisitions and disposals.

This course considers facilities management in the broader context of the construction cycle. The advent of new procurement methods such as the Private Finance Initiative (PFI) have inevitably drawn facilities managers into the larger issue of construction projects and their procurement, This course considers procurement arrangement options, principles of contract law, procurement through Public Private Partnerships, construction contracts, negotiation, as well as conflicts and disputes. Facilities managers have an ever increasing contribution to make in this process in the capacity of informed client.

•Sustainable Practices in Facilities Management - mandatory
This course examines a number of key issues in facilities management which are rapidly gaining significance within the industry. This Distance Learning programme has been developed for graduates working or hoping to work in the emergency water and sanitation sector in low- and middle-income countries. It is designed to develop your understanding on the principles and practice of infrastructure provision in emergencies and during reconstruction. It will equip you with the key skills, expertise and knowledge for emergency work in low- and middle-income countries.

The aims of this module are for the student to understand: the range of infrastructure needs for affected communities during and following emergencies; the range of suitable technologies for water supply and engineering management of liquid and solid wastes during and following emergencies; and the links between human health, water, and waste management.

- Emergencies, Management and People
The aims of this module are for the student to understand the key characteristics of disasters and emergencies; the management of effective humanitarian relief; the importance of adequate assessment, planning and management of emergency response and how communities and individuals may be affected by disasters.

- Emergency Water Supply
The aims of this module are for students to understand the important aspects of the design, construction, operation and maintenance of water supplies in emergencies in low and middle income countries.

- Emergency Sanitation
This module is designed to deliver understanding in: the range of environmental sanitation needs of communities during and following emergencies; the range of technologies and approaches for addressing environmental sanitation needs in emergencies and the importance of assessment, planning and management of emergency environmental sanitation programmes.

- Data Collection, Analysis and Research
The aims of this module are to introduce the principles and approaches for doing research and studies on infrastructure and services in low- and middle-income countries and to prepare students to undertake the research dissertation module.

- Research Dissertation
The aim of this module is to provide the student with experience of the process and methodology of research by defining and studying (on an individual basis) a complex problem in a specialised area relating to their degree.

- Urban Infrastructure
The aim of this module is for the student to understand the key issues in the planning and conceptual design of infrastructure improvements for low income urban communities.

- Environmental Assessment
The aim of this module is for participants to develop a broad understanding of both the needs for and the mechanisms of environmental assessment and management, with emphasis on aquatic environments, in low and middle-income countries.

- Integrated Water Resources Management
The aim of this module is for participants to understand the concepts used in integrated planning and management of water resources in low and middle-income countries.

- Water Utilities Management
The aim of this module is to better enable participants to plan for and manage urban water and sanitation services in developing countries.

Facilities

Distance Learning students study from home but are welcome to visit the Loughborough campus. They can make remote use of the University Library’s electronic search facilities. They can also remotely access the WEDC ‘Knowledge Base’, which has links to many sources of useful and relevant information.

Facilities on campus include our laboratory which houses equipment for field sampling and analysis of water and wastewater, and some of the largest hydraulics equipment in the UK. Although Distance Learners will not normally have access to this equipment they can ask the advice of laboratory staff if they are carrying out fieldwork as part of their dissertation.

How you will learn

Distance Learning students study from home but are welcome to visit the Loughborough campus. They can make remote use of the University Library’s electronic search facilities and the WEDC ‘Knowledge Base’, which has links to many sources of useful and relevant information.

The programme comprises both compulsory core modules, and optional modules which may be selected. The Case Study module draws together material from across the programme. A research dissertation between 75 and 150 pages long on a chosen topic relevant to interests or career development concludes the programme. Many of the Distance Learning modules have web-based discussion forums, where Distance Learners can choose to interact with each other and Module Tutors.

The method of delivery for the learning materials is mainly portable and paper-based, to suit students who are living or working in areas of the world with poor internet connectivity, or those who travel frequently. We also arrange some webinars which are recorded for students who are unable to participate.

During the programme students build up an excellent library of well-produced bound module notes, additional resources and relevant text books. In addition to the printed version we are developing and planning to provide e-reader versions of some module notes to enhance portability.

- Assessment
For most modules, students are assessed by two written assessments (three items for core modules). The individual research dissertation module is assessed on the basis of a written dissertation and an oral when a student discusses their submitted dissertation with their supervisor and a second member of staff. For students who cannot visit the UK this oral takes place over Skype.

Careers and further study

Many WEDC students and alumni work for international NGOs (MSF, Oxfam, SCF, GOAL, WaterAid, etc.) and agencies (such as UNICEF), or National Governments. Distance Learning students already working in these sectors find their new skills to be directly relevant and readily applicable to their jobs.
Graduate job titles include WASH Coordinator, WASH Engineer, Emergency WASH Manager, Technical Adviser and Project Manager.

Environmental and Infrastructure Planning (EIP) focuses on the sustainable planning of infrastructure. It does so from a spatial planning perspective. This means that you will not only explore infrastructure planning, realization and management concerning roads, utilities and water systems; you will also learn about the relationship between societal and political processes.

The Master's degree focuses on students with an academic interest in designing policy solutions for problems in the field of environment, such as climate change. It will also give you the chance to learn more about issues concerning water, like flooding, and infrastructure project, for example the growth of mobility. The programme emphasizes the integration of technical knowledge with knowledge of planning and planning processes.

The interdisciplinary character of EIP is reflected in the contents of its curriculum. Several courses will strengthen your knowledge of issues in EIP and the tools you use in this discipline. To satisfy your individual academic interests, a number of electives are available. You complete the programme by writing a thesis.

The rationale for the course is based on the recognition that the effectiveness of all IT Services is a vital aspect to the prosperity of any organisation. The course embraces best practice from leading service providers, and by continual reassessment, ensures all material is relevant to today’s computing and management expectations.

The course encompasses IT Service Management through a series of progressive units developing the student’s knowledge from fundamental concepts, through to units addressing IS strategy. Subjects covered include: management information, quality management, application development, infrastructure, service support and delivery, continuity planning, people and operational issues of implementing IT Service Management Best Practice. The course addresses current standards for IT Service Management, such as ISO20000 and ITIL®.
