About the course

The complex challenges faced in modern engineering have created a growing need for highly motivated graduates who understand project infrastructure planning, construction, management and maintenance issues.

This MSc course equips you with the knowledge, creativity and transferable skills required by project managers in the industry – developing your independent learning abilities and providing a foundation for your ongoing professional development.

You will learn current theories and practices for managing contemporary engineering projects from inception to completion – and for maintaining the resulting infrastructure throughout its lifetime.

Aims

Engineering is at the core of a successful economy and the infrastructure it develops directly affects the wellbeing of its citizens and the environment. Skilled, qualified project managers have a key role in this vital work.

There are two main challenges facing the engineering and construction industry:

1. Clients are increasingly requiring contractors to deliver projects using limited resources, at low cost, in short duration and to a high level of quality and safety
2. Much existing infrastructure is under severe strain due to a legacy of inadequate maintenance and rapid population growth.

The course examines these commercial pressures and will provide opportunities for students to develop and demonstrate knowledge and understanding of:

- The principles of strategic planning and risk analysis in successful project and infrastructure management
- The theoretical basis for the organisation of project infrastructure development and how management of budgets, human resources and supply chains can affect overall project success
- The interplay between engineering project, infrastructure management and sustainability in the complex real-world situations.

The programme develops students' technical knowledge and transferable skills sought by employers, equipping them with the compulsory attributes to flourish in senior roles within the engineering and construction sector.

Course Content

The taught element of the course includes eight modules which approximates to 150 learning hours. For full-time mode of study, the programme is taken over 12 months. The eight modules will be taught over the first eight months (from October to May) and during the final four months (June to September), students will undertake a project dissertation.

The individual project gives you the opportunity to undertake original research in the field of engineering project and infrastructure management. The preparatory work for the project is undertaken together with the taught modules over the first two semesters, under a research methods module, whilst the summer period is being devoted to the actual project dissertation.

Teaching

Formal lectures are used to deliver course materials and are supported by structured seminars and problem solving sessions to develop your knowledge and cognitive skills. The lectures give a broad overview of the main concepts and principles you need to understand, providing you with a framework on which to build and expand your knowledge on through private studies.

The application of theory and strengthening of knowledge of taught material is achieved through computing sessions, field trips and group projects. The latter is aimed particularly at enhancing your teamwork skills.

Our well resourced computing laboratories allow you to develop your knowledge and experience of appropriate planning and management software packages - and to apply this to project and infrastructure management problems. You also have access to computers outside scheduled laboratory sessions to allow you to learn at your own pace and time.

Learning from real-world examples forms a significant part of the course. You will visit project sites to understand the challenges and solutions of modern engineering projects.

Our staff are active in research and maintain close contact with industry to ensure that course materials are up-to date with commercial needs. We also invite leading industry figures to the University as guest speakers.

You will also be allocated a personal tutor who will be available to provide academic and pastoral support during the whole duration of your course.

Assessment

Each of the taught modules is assessed either by formal examination, an assignment, or a balanced combination of the two. Methods of assessing assignments include essay, individual/group report, oral presentation and short test.

Information on assignments in terms of the aims, learning outcomes, assessment criteria and submissions requirements are clearly specified at the beginning of the academic year. Detailed feedback on assignment is provided to students to assist them in achieving the required learning outcomes.

The research project is assessed by dissertation and oral presentation. You will be assigned to a project supervisor who will provide you with a one-to-one supervision on your work. The research project gives you the opportunity to take what you have learnt and to explore and develop specific interests by applying it to your own piece of research, which makes it possibly the most fulfilling aspect of the course.

Special Features

This MSc programme has been specially designed to develop graduates and practising engineers and position them at the forefront of managing and leading these developments.

The course explores very current, 21st century issues around risk management, planning and programming, cost control, people and information management, contract/procurement management and sustainability. We receive input for the course from industrial partners and students get to understand project management at work through site visits.

Modules on project finance, risk, procurement and contract management, supply chain strategy, will underpin modules focusing on sustainable project, infrastructure and environmental management.

Students’ skills in gathering and understanding complex information from a variety of sources (including engineering, scientific and socio-economic information) will be developed in a module on advanced research methods. Issues relating to risk and health and safety will be developed in more specialist modules.

Teaching and learning

Each of these four themes is informed by six strands of subject specialist knowledge: Economics, Accounting and Finance, Human Resource Management, Operations and Project Management, Marketing and Leadership and Strategic Management. The delivery of the modules is sequential so that you're able to apply the latest managerial theories to a real life situation in a holistic approach from the outset.

Although the acquisition of knowledge and understanding will be delivered through a variety of strategies, the use of real life case studies is central to our teaching and learning strategy.

Strategy for teaching and learning

Real life case study
At the start of the course each participant chooses a case study (or case studies if one does not cover all scenarios) based on their disciplinary background and/ or the chosen MBA flavour. The teaching methods are integrated throughout the four core modules and demonstrated in examples and applied to the case study. For example, under the first module-Inside the Modern Organisation – the case study is used so that the participant can address the key issues across the various disciplinary streams.

Master classes
A series of master classes delivered by external experts in the various specialist fields will be delivered throughout the academic year enabling our students to engage with contemporary management issues.

Lectures, seminars and workshops
Each of the four core modules will be delivered by a team of academics from each of the subject discipline stream. Interactive seminars and workshops will support the lectures and have a strong focus on small group activities to encourage the active participation of students throughout the academic year, developing peer learning, the sharing of knowledge and support amongst the diverse student body.

Self-managed learning
Self-managed learning activities to supplement and consolidate classroom based activity include: reading texts and relevant journals, application of knowledge to additional problem based exercises, engaging in coursework, group discussion, review of key topics and examination preparation where appropriate. Many of these activities are supported by the virtual learning environment (VLE).

You will qualify with a sound understanding of the whole life-cycle of infrastructure assets, the environmental impact of infrastructure projects, and formal asset-management techniques enabling you to maximise the benefits of infrastructure assets in the future.

The lectures given by our academic staff are complemented by visiting speakers from different infrastructure companies such as Network Rail, Thames Water, Environment Agency, Transport for London, ARUP, KPMG, etc., covering different aspect of infrastructure engineering and management. During the academic year, infrastructure specialists carry out Keynote Lectures focusing on important infrastructure projects and approaches. Past Keynote Speakers include Sir John Armitt, Sir Terry Morgan, Sir Michael Pitt, Sir David Higgins, Keith Clarke, James Stewart, Andrew Wolstenholme, Michele Dix, Humphrey Cadoux-Hudson. A number of field visits are also organised to provide an overview of real-life infrastructure operation and management. Graduates from the programme are highly employable but have the potential to progress to relevant specialist PhD or EngD research programmes in the field.

Society continues to value and shape the built environment resulting in both public and private investment in construction assets and the successful completion of construction projects. As these projects become more socially and technically complex in a changing world dominated by a concern for sustainability, there has been a growing challenge to develop existing and new skills and expertise in construction project management. This challenge is not only national but global as the need for construction project management skills continues to grow internationally. Indeed, our student cohorts reflect this global challenge with students from across multiple continents.

We have been running programmes in MSc Construction Project Management for nearly 20 years. This arose from the need to extend the managerial remit to those activities that fall outside the construction phase to include areas such as financing, design and hand-over. - ICT for Construction Projects
This module introduces managers to a wide range of tools and technologies appropriate for their role and projects. The module covers a range of topics including project information flows, e-business, database technologies, emerging technologies, building information modelling technologies, groupware and collaborative systems.

- Research and Communication
The aims of this module are to provide the student with an overview of sources of information in construction; to explain to students how to conduct a literature review and introduce students to the principal methods of investigation in construction research; and provide an opportunity for each student to develop professional and academic skills in oral and written communication.

- Principles of Design and Construction
This module teaches students the fundamental principles of managing a project during the design and construction phases. The module develops knowledge and understanding of the role and principles of the estimating, tendering and planning of construction projects and the importance of health and safety in relation to design and construction activities.

Students will gain an understanding of construction project management principles and theory. - People and Teams
Students will gain a knowledge and understanding of the key fundamental management principles and theory (such as motivation, teamwork, leadership, task management) and how they can be applied to managing people within the context of the construction project environment. Students will also be able to analyse current theoretical approaches to people management, appreciate importance of ethics and cultural issues and evaluate the key factors driving HRM systems.

- Procurement and Contract Procedure
This module aims to develop students understanding of procurement methods, different forms of contract and contract practice. The module is designed to give students key practical skills including advising clients on appropriate procurement and tendering methods; selecting the most appropriate form of construction contract; and manage a construction contract effectively.

- Business Economics and Finance
Students will gain a sound understanding of macro, meso and micro economics and types, sources and management of finance relating to construction organisations and projects. This will allow students to analyse the policies and operations of construction organisations and projects from an economic perspective to determine likely performance consequences and analyse corporate financial data for investment prospects and business management decisions.

- Federated 3D Building Information Modelling (BIM)
The creation, deployment and use of aggregated and integrated models are key goals of collaboration through BIM. This module aims to deliver hands-on practical skills on the use of BIM technologies (i.e. design software and collaboration tools) for real-time co-creation and data sharing of federated/aggregated 3D BIM models. The concept of shared situational awareness within design teams/processes will be explored.

Previous students have gone on to work for a variety of organisations nationally and internationally. These include Arup, Atkins, BAM Nuttall Ltd, Balfour Beatty, Kier Group, Morgan Sindall, Skanska and Transport for London. Many of these organisations engage with the University in both collaborative research and in delivering lectures on the courses. Scholarships and bursaries

This innovative MSc considers the perspectives of procuring infrastructure as well as providing the private finance to deliver the required investments to close the infrastructure gap.

About this degree

With a strong commercial focus, the MSc in Infrastructure Investment and Finance (IIF) provides candidates with a well-balanced mix of economic and financial theory as well as industry practice, including modules exploring:

  • the economics and finance of infrastructure development and delivery
  • the history and future of infrastructure investment at global, national and sector levels, and the key determinants of total and sector investment levels
  • the impact of government policy, funding and private capital markets on investment in infrastructure
  • the role of regulation in incentivising private investment

The rationale for the course is based on the recognition that the effectiveness of all IT Services is a vital aspect to the prosperity of any organisation. Who is it for?

This postgraduate Project Management, Finance and Risk programme is for those pursuing or planning a career in managing the introduction of capital goods or applying the latest project management techniques to complex projects. It is particularly suited to students with a scientific or financial engineering background as we cover quantitative risk assessment in depth, which requires an aptitude for measuring and analysing data.

Objectives

Consider the risks contained within a project such as the Euro Tunnel. Two governments sponsoring the project and nine billion pounds of finance ring-fenced through a special purpose company to complete it. Will it be finished on time and will it secure the revenues to service the debt? These are the kinds of questions we address on this programme.

MSc Project Management, Finance and Risk gives you a foundation in quantitative risk assessment and decision-making under uncertain conditions, coupled with classical engineering economics and financial engineering.

From analysing indecision within games theory to rebuilding a country’s infrastructure, we explore the drivers in which businesses operate, and the challenges and opportunities that project managers face. Teaching is provided  by internal and external lecturers with expertise in the field. This is complemented by invited lectures from the Sir John Cass Business School, together with people from industry and the banking sector who bring in diverse skill sets and the ability to solve complex problems.

Placements

There is no formal requirement to do an industry-based placement as part of the programme. However, some students arrange to undertake their final project within a company.

Teaching and learning

As well as lectures, you learn through tutorial support, guided private study, coordinating group activities, and coursework. Not every module has an exam and in some cases you will be assessed through a module project.

Full-time students complete the programme in one year and we expect you to devote a significant part of the non-taught hours to project work, group activities, as well as your own independent study. The duration of a part-time programme is two years (this may be extended to three years in individual cases.

Modules

There are four core modules and two electives. Out of the two electives you can choose from four or five topics including games theory, perspectives on management and leadership and entrepreneurship, innovations and enterprise.

You can also take part in a rolling programme of one-day events to build your communication and team-building skills while you study. These sessions cover topics including conducting research, improving your presentation skills and dealing with people.

The course is modular and each module lasts four days. The structure has been designed in this way so that both full and part-time students can follow the programme. In addition, the course offers practical skills in management, leadership, entrepreneurship, software and communications tools.

You are normally required to complete all the taught modules successfully before progressing to the dissertation.

A Prince 2 Project Management Practitioner’s Course will be offered to students in the summer term. This five-day course, paid for by the institution, is presented by an outside training agency. By successfully completing the course you will be awarded a coveted practitioner’s certificate.

You will complete a total of five units (including your dissertation) involving attendance of six or eight days for each unit. You will study several key topics covering areas of project management theory and methods, while gaining an insight into their practical application in a business context.

Here are the units you will study:

Project Environment and Planning: You will develop an understanding of the relationship between project and business management, as well as the project management environment and the factors that influence project outcomes. Strategic aspects of projects are addressed, including project selection and portfolio design. You will also learn how project managers must understand the benefits to be delivered by projects, the requirements of stakeholders and how to work within the constraints of cost, time and quality. Estimation methods and planning techniques are taught together with quality management. Approaches to the planning and control of projects that have been developed in different sectors are also covered, including agile methods and fast tracking.

Budgets and Commercial Management: This unit introduces you to raising project finance, building, monitoring and controlling project budgets and measuring Earned Value of project deliverables. It also covers the commercial aspects of procurement including tendering, contracting and the skills and practices of contract and bid negotiation, providing you with the tools and techniques for managing project budgets. The units also examines the key roles that project managers, budget managers and key project personnel play in managing project budgets.

People Management and Risk: This unit develops a critical understanding of individual, team and organisational working in order to deliver project goals successfully. It covers how individual characteristics such as personality, intelligence, ability and skills, motivation and attitudes affect individual performance. You will learn how to empower individuals and teams to achieve quality standards which enhance personal team and organisational performance, together with the development of creative and credible leadership. It also examines the key challenges in the application of risk management frameworks and models in project management, crisis management and corporate governance. Risk management strategies and the development of effective project mitigation and contingency action plans are critically evaluated.

Project Investigation and Systems Methods: This unit explores the investigation of project issues through the use of a structured research methodology and project management analysis tools to enhance the research process. Wider strategic issues are explored to place the research process into context and to illustrate how appropriate research methods can be identified for specific types of research problems. You will also look at tools for the modelling and analysis of complex problem situations (including systems thinking, soft systems methods and influence diagrams) and how these can be used to diagnose problem situations to identify relevant areas for further investigation. Project management methodologies including PRINCE2, Partnering and Programme Management as a wider context for project management research issues are examined. You will produce a research proposal that brings together the use of research methodology and project systems in identifying, justifying and investigating a research question that will feed into the research conducted in your final dissertation.

Dissertation: This unit enables you to deepen your understanding of an aspect of project management of your own choice. Many students choose to investigate topics which they intend to focus on in the next stage of their career. The unit is structured as a research project so you can demonstrate your ability to identify, design, plan and undertake research on a specific project management issue and effectively communicate your findings in an appropriate manner for a Master’s degree.

Programme Assessment

The units are structured as eight teaching blocks of three days of lectures, seminars and interactive syndicate work, with periods of self-managed study between blocks. The course provides a theoretical basis for service procurement; the selection of service providers; and risk management models. It considers the organisational, human and cultural impact of facilities and ways in which improved services can affect facility performance. Within the course, ongoing performance measurement systems are also described which enable the effective management of service contracts.

•Space Planning and Management - mandatory
This course provides a strategic overview of space from a business perspective. It identifies the supply and demand process in relation to property portfolios and considers tools and techniques that enable the effective modelling and use of space. It examines the concept of flexibility and reuse in the context of a changing organisational context. Alternative space strategies are examined in the course in tandem with new ways of working. It also considers how space can be used to support work-life balance strategies in organisations.

•Asset Maintenance Management - mandatory
This course examines the effective management and maintenance of operational property. Key aspects include: maintenance policy and standards; planned and responsive maintenance; asset appraisal and evaluation; information management; maintenance; property portfolios; acquisitions and disposals.

This course considers facilities management in the broader context of the construction cycle. The advent of new procurement methods such as the Private Finance Initiative (PFI) have inevitably drawn facilities managers into the larger issue of construction projects and their procurement, This course considers procurement arrangement options, principles of contract law, procurement through Public Private Partnerships, construction contracts, negotiation, as well as conflicts and disputes. Facilities managers have an ever increasing contribution to make in this process in the capacity of informed client.

•Sustainable Practices in Facilities Management - mandatory
This course examines a number of key issues in facilities management which are rapidly gaining significance within the industry. The purpose of the course is to familiarise the facilities manager with contemporary issues in facilities management and the relevant guidelines, assessment procedures, and standards for sustainable and strategic facilities issues. This a construction business management MSc is aimed at technically-competent construction professionals who want to move into construction management. The course arms you with the business knowledge and management skills needed for a fast-track career in construction management.

The Construction Management MSc course will help you:

Accreditation

Teaching and learning

A mix of approaches is used in the delivery of the Construction Management postgraduate course. Some modules follow a traditional lecture format. In others, there is a greater emphasis on case studies and learning through active participation.

In general, considerable team-work in various practical exercises and group assignments is required.

All modules involve undertaking a certain number of individual and/or group assignments (coursework) during the teaching terms. Many of these assignments involve essay writing. Furthermore, four modules are additionally assessed by comprehensive final examinations.

Completion of modules and examinations will lead to the award of a Post-Graduate Diploma. The completion of modules, examinations and a dissertation will lead to the award of the MSc.

You can choose to take course full time or part time.

Full-time

A 12-month full-time option during which you attend all the taught modules during Semesters 1 and 2, and complete your Project within the 12-month period of the degree.

Part-time

A 24-month part-time option during which you attend half the modules in a first 12-month period, followed by the other half the next year.

Students are expected to complete all the modules in this two year period. The teaching periods are structured to deliver core modules in a sequence which permits engagement by part-time students alongside full-time students. The dissertation project is undertaken by part-time students in the second year.

Teaching takes place on two full days per week, with some lectures (Law) taking place in the evening. In addition, there is a small number of team-working weekends, plus a Foundation Week at the start of the programme each year, which is attended by all (full- and part-time) students.

This method of delivery is popular with students working full-time within reasonable commuting distance of City, University of London (probably within the M25 cordon), as well as to full-time students, by concentrating tuition into two days per week on average, and encouraging flexibility for independent study.

Modules

The Construction Management MSc is made up of 180 credits, with 60 credits awarded to the Project. Attendance is required to obtain 120 credits from the taught modules.

The taught part of the Construction Management Masters course is based on ten core modules (a total of 120 credits), of which five are carefully chosen to provide you with a broad foundation in various aspects of the theory and practice in general management.

The remaining set of modules cover important aspects in the practice of planning, financing, and delivering large-scale civil engineering and infrastructure projects. During these modules, you will focus on the development of practical management skills within a construction context.

The culmination of the course is the Project: your dissertation (60 credits). This is a major individual research exercise on a topic within the broad area of construction management conducted under the direction of your supervisor.

This degree will give you in-demand skills sought by firms for business management roles within all parts of construction delivery – from client-side project supervision through to principal contractor project roles or package contractor specialist roles.

HRM and Organisational Capability Development

Data centres are mission critical environments, experiencing high levels of complexity and change. This module will help you to build your own understanding of issues that influence the industry, develop your responses and grow as a thought leader.

Research skills are important in business as well as academia. Producing high quality research can drive innovation and enterprise and form a crucial part of the professional’s portfolio of capability. This module will enable you to develop the key project management and data analysis skills needed to deliver Masters Level research.

Post Graduate Major Project

You can then sit parts two and three of the qualification after completing your course. Course details

The course comprises 10 core modules and four elective modules. This enables you to tailor the course to suit your personal career plan.
