The Faculty of Spatial Sciences in Groningen and the Department of Regional and City Planning in Bandung combine their strengths in this double degree. The course lasts for twenty-four months. You will spend the first twelve months in Indonesia and the second twelve months in the Netherlands.

The programme is designed to provide individuals and government officials with the professional capability to deal with planning related activities. Engineering (civil, mechanical, electrical, chemical, architectural, building, etc.) is at the core of a successful economy and the infrastructure it develops directly affects the well-being of its citizens and the environment. There are, however, two main challenges that the engineering and construction industry currently face. First, modern engineering project clients are increasingly requiring contractors to deliver projects using limited resources, at low cost, in short duration and to a high level of quality and safety.

Second, much existing infrastructure is under severe strain due to a legacy of inadequate maintenance and rapid population growth. These difficulties cause premature deterioration of existing infrastructure, thereby reducing their intended economic yield. The demand for infrastructure provision and maintenance has thus become more acute and a recognised issue worldwide than ever. Thus, the efficient delivery of infrastructure projects is not the only standard clients desperately expect from contractors, but their sustained improvement throughout the useful life of the infrastructure is also a key requirement. PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

This course covers the planning, design, analysis and management frameworks of infrastructure systems. In particular, you will develop expertise in the:

-Interdependent nature of infrastructure across different sectors

This innovative MSc considers the perspectives of procuring infrastructure as well as providing the private finance to deliver the required investments to close the infrastructure gap.

Degree information

With a strong commercial focus, this course provides candidates with a well-balanced mix of economic and financial theory as well as industry practice, including modules exploring:
-The history and future of infrastructure investment at global, national and sector levels, and the key determinants of total and sector investment levels.
-The impact of government policy, funding and private capital markets on investment in infrastructure.
-The role of regulation in incentivising private investment.
-The cost of capital for infrastructure investment and the allocation of risk in contracted delivery.
-The commercial perspective of infrastructure project sponsors, lenders, investors and contractors throughout the procurement, design, construction and operation of infrastructure assets.

MSc students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits. The programme consists of eight core modules (120 credits) and a research dissertation (60 credits). A Postgraduate Diploma, eight core modules (120 credits) is offered. There are no optional modules for this programme.

Teaching and learning
The MSc programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars, group tutorials/workshops, project briefings, and individual supervision for the research-based dissertation element. Assessment is through examinations, 3,000-word written term papers and the 10,000-word dissertation.

You will complete a total of five units (including your dissertation) involving attendance of six or eight days for each unit. You will study several key topics covering areas of project management theory and methods, while gaining an insight into their practical application in a business context.

Here are the units you will study:

Project Environment and Planning: You will develop an understanding of the relationship between project and business management, as well as the project management environment and the factors that influence project outcomes. Strategic aspects of projects are addressed, including project selection and portfolio design. You will also learn how project managers must understand the benefits to be delivered by projects, the requirements of stakeholders and how to work within the constraints of cost, time and quality. Estimation methods and planning techniques are taught together with quality management. Approaches to the planning and control of projects that have been developed in different sectors are also covered, including agile methods and fast tracking.

Budgets and Commercial Management: This unit introduces you to raising project finance, building, monitoring and controlling project budgets and measuring Earned Value of project deliverables. It also covers the commercial aspects of procurement including tendering, contracting and the skills and practices of contract and bid negotiation, providing you with the tools and techniques for managing project budgets. The units also examines the key roles that project managers, budget managers and key project personnel play in managing project budgets.

People Management and Risk: This unit develops a critical understanding of individual, team and organisational working in order to deliver project goals successfully. It covers how individual characteristics such as personality, intelligence, ability and skills, motivation and attitudes affect individual performance. You will learn how to empower individuals and teams to achieve quality standards which enhance personal team and organisational performance, together with the development of creative and credible leadership. It also examines the key challenges in the application of risk management frameworks and models in project management, crisis management and corporate governance. Risk management strategies and the development of effective project mitigation and contingency action plans are critically evaluated.

Project Investigation and Systems Methods: This unit explores the investigation of project issues through the use of a structured research methodology and project management analysis tools to enhance the research process. Wider strategic issues are explored to place the research process into context and to illustrate how appropriate research methods can be identified for specific types of research problems. You will also look at tools for the modelling and analysis of complex problem situations (including systems thinking, soft systems methods and influence diagrams) and how these can be used to diagnose problem situations to identify relevant areas for further investigation. Project management methodologies including PRINCE2, Partnering and Programme Management as a wider context for project management research issues are examined. You will produce a research proposal that brings together the use of research methodology and project systems in identifying, justifying and investigating a research question that will feed into the research conducted in your final dissertation.

Dissertation: This unit enables you to deepen your understanding of an aspect of project management of your own choice. Many students choose to investigate topics which they intend to focus on in the next stage of their career. The unit is structured as a research project so you can demonstrate your ability to identify, design, plan and undertake research on a specific project management issue and effectively communicate your findings in an appropriate manner for a Master’s degree.

Programme Assessment

The units are structured as eight teaching blocks of three days of lectures, seminars and interactive syndicate work, with periods of self-managed study between blocks. Each of these will be assessed by coursework assignments. You will also produce a dissertation with guidance from a supervisor. The dissertation is structured as an independent research project to deepen your understanding of a chosen aspect of project management. Your choice of topic can contribute towards the next stage of your career by demonstrating your ability to identify, design, undertake and communicate your original research on a specific project management topic.

•Service Procurement and Provision – mandatory
This course looks at the key services that make up a modern facilities management operation ranging from interior design, landscaping and courtesy services to the more traditional property related services concerned with the upkeep of facilities. The course provides a theoretical basis for service procurement; the selection of service providers; and risk management models. It considers the organisational, human and cultural impact of facilities and ways in which improved services can affect facility performance. Within the course, ongoing performance measurement systems are also described which enable the effective management of service contracts.

•Space Planning and Management - mandatory
This course provides a strategic overview of space from a business perspective. It identifies the supply and demand process in relation to property portfolios and considers tools and techniques that enable the effective modelling and use of space. It examines the concept of flexibility and reuse in the context of a changing organisational context. Alternative space strategies are examined in the course in tandem with new ways of working. It also considers how space can be used to support work-life balance strategies in organisations.

•Asset Maintenance Management - mandatory
This course examines the effective management and maintenance of operational property. Key aspects include: maintenance policy and standards; planned and responsive maintenance; asset appraisal and evaluation; information management; maintenance; property portfolios; acquisitions and disposals.

•Contracts & Procurement - mandatory
This course considers facilities management in the broader context of the construction cycle. The advent of new procurement methods such as the Private Finance Initiative (PFI) have inevitably drawn facilities managers into the larger issue of construction projects and their procurement, This course considers procurement arrangement options, principles of contract law, procurement through Public Private Partnerships, construction contracts, negotiation, as well as conflicts and disputes. Facilities managers have an ever increasing contribution to make in this process in the capacity of informed client.

•Sustainable Practices in Facilities Management - mandatory
This course examines a number of key issues in facilities management which are rapidly gaining significance within the industry. The purpose of the course is to familiarise the facilities manager with contemporary issues in facilities management and the relevant guidelines, assessment procedures, and standards for sustainable and strategic facilities issues. Key issues covered include: sustainability, energy management, waste management, the working environment, and comfort and productivity in the workplace.

Program Objectives

In Hong Kong, as in other densely-populated cities, environmental issues such as the deterioration of air and water quality, and increased constraints on solid waste management, have posed great challenges to environmental engineers.

In recent years, rapid technological advances as well as the availability of more and more well-trained personnel in the environmental engineering field have led to a stronger demand for advanced studies at the PG level in environmental engineering. The former factor means more people in the field now feel the need to keep themselves updated on the latest technologies available for solving environmental issues. The latter factor means environmental engineers now feel greater pressure to enhance their professional competency and qualification in order to stay competitive and remain occupationally mobile.

With the above background, the Postgraduate Diploma (PGD) and Master of Science (MSc) programs in Environmental Engineering and Management are meant to meet the needs of practicing engineers who may be engaged in the design, commissioning and management of environmental facilities and infrastructure systems.

The MSc / Postgraduate Diploma in Civil Engineering and Construction Management provides students with a combination of courses designed to improve their knowledge and understanding of advanced civil engineering and modern construction management theory and practice. Structure

The MSc Public Policy and Management has three components:

1. Four core courses to the value of 2.0 units
2. Elective course(s) to the value of 1.0 unit
3. Dissertation of 10,000 words on an approved topic (1 unit)

The 10,000-word dissertation is worth 25% of your final mark. During term 2 you will submit your dissertation proposal and select an academic supervisor. Over the ensuing months you should meet with your supervisor at least three times before the end of term 3 for guidance. The bulk of your dissertation will be written over the summer to meet the mid-September deadline.

Not all elective courses are offered every year; please check your preferences with the Programme Convenor. Also note that if half units are selected, one term 1 course and one term 2 course needs to be chosen.

- Part-time Study

Part-time students are required to complete three of the core courses during their first year, then one core and two elective courses plus the dissertation during the second year.

Building on the distance learning version of the programme, the Department of Financial and Management Studies (DeFiMS) maintains close links with employers in both the United Kingdom and abroad. Welcome to the Faculty of Law and Social Sciences at SOAS. This course is for engineers, architects, surveyors, construction managers, facilities managers, and any construction professional, who wants a management career in construction. The course arms students with the business knowledge and management skills needed for a fast track career in construction management.

Objectives

This course aims to improve the rate of business return from construction professionals, by equipping them with the knowledge and skills needed to manage the construction process.

Teaching and learning

A mix of approaches is used in the delivery of the Construction Management postgraduate course. For some modules a traditional lecture format prevails; in others there is a greater emphasis on case studies and learning through active participation. In general, considerable team-work in various practical exercises and group assignments is required. All modules involve undertaking a certain number of individual and/or group assignments (coursework) during the teaching terms. Many of these assignments involve essay writing. Furthermore, four modules are additionally assessed by comprehensive final examinations.

Completion of modules and examinations will lead to the award of a Post Graduate Diploma. The completion of modules, examinations and a dissertation will lead to the award of the MSc. The Construction Management MSc comprises 180 credits, with 60 credits awarded to the Project. Attendance is required to obtain 120 credits from the taught modules. This can be achieved by one of two methods:

Full-time
A 12-month full-time option during which students attend all the taught modules during Semesters 1 & 2, and complete their Project within the 12-months period of the degree.

Part-time
A 24-month part-time option during which a student attends half the modules in a first 12-month period, followed by the other half the next year.

Students are expected to complete all the modules in this two year period. The teaching periods are structured to deliver core modules in a sequence which permits engagement by P-T students alongside F-T students. The Project is undertaken by Part-Time students in the second year. Teaching takes place on two full days per week, with some lectures (Law) taking place in the evening. In addition there is a small number of team-working weekends, plus a Foundation Week at the start of the programme each year, which is attended by all (full- and part-time) students.

This method of delivery is designed to be attractive to students working full-time within reasonable commuting distance of City, University of London (probably within the M25 cordon), as well as to full-time students, by concentrating tuition into two days per week on average, and encouraging flexibility for independent study.

Modules

The taught part of the Construction Management Masters course is based on ten modules, of which five are carefully chosen to provide a broad foundation in various aspects of the theory and practice in the field of general management.

These modules are delivered by academic staff members of City's Cass Business School. They constitute part of the curriculum for the MSc Management, a degree run by Cass Business School. The five management modules are complemented by five construction-oriented modules delivered by senior professional engineers with wide experience in the construction industry.

The latter set of modules covers important aspects in the practice of planning, financing, and delivering large scale civil engineering and infrastructure projects. These modules focus on the development of practical management skills within a construction context.

The culmination of the course is the Project: a major individual research exercise on a topic within the broad area of construction management conducted under the direction of a supervisor.

The major product of the Project work is a written report (dissertation). The topics/titles for this major Project can be chosen from: (a) a list suggested by the lecturers of the course, (b) students' own ideas/initiatives, or (c) where applicable by a student's sponsoring company/industrial partner.

Structure

Students are taught, via innovative teaching techniques, about the concepts and practice of international crisis management, risk, crisis and emergency management, foreign policy management, handling emergency situations and developing response strategies, as well as be involved in hands-on crisis and emergency simulations in order to provide a comprehensive academic and professional training experience in the field of International Crisis Management.

The programme runs over 12 months to 36 months depending on the qualification. There are three levels of qualification, each leading to the next – Postgraduate Certificate, Postgraduate Diploma and MSc.

Delivery

The individual modules are delivered in what is known as block format. So, as opposed to the usual style of university courses which are two or three hours of contact time per week over a ten week term, these modules are delivered in four full working days of contact time, with then guided study, tutor contact, and deliverables rounding off the module.

Assessment

The programme has a wide array of assessment methods to allow students to highlight the best of their abilities. These range from traditional coursework to the preparation of policy briefs, group-work, reflections and, in the case of the optional Emergency Simulation module, practical assessment.

Concern for the global environment is continuing to grow. As a result there is a continuing demand for skilled and experienced professionals in environmental management. This course gives you the knowledge and skills to meet these demands.
The course is suitable if you:
-Want to advance your studies and qualifications to postgraduate level.
-Work for an environmental organisation and want to develop your career prospects.
-Are passionate about the environment and considering a career change to work in environmental management.

We have strong links with public and private sector organisations allowing us to make sure that the course meets the needs of employers.

In the first semester you study core environmental topics and material that assist you to settle in to postgraduate study. In the second semester you have the option to study:
-The management and sensitive use of natural resources (international resource management strand).
-The conservation of wildlife and landscapes (wildlife and landscape management strand).
-A mix of the above topics allowing you to tailor your studies to your own particular interests (environmental management strand).

To ensure your learning is interesting and relevant to the workplace, we use a range of teaching methods including class discussions, case studies based on real life scenarios and field visits. You also have the opportunity to take a module where you do a project for a real organisation.

Format

Distance Learning:
The distance learning Construction Project Management course is a fully on-line course with no attendance on campus. The course is presented via our Virtual Learning Environment (CampusMoodle).

The CampusMoodle infrastructure provides a virtual classroom to deliver the equivalent of on-campus face-to-face staff ¬student contact. The learning experience is enhanced through the provision of core reading, supplementary notes, reading lists, case study materials, web links, video footage, synchronous and asynchronous interaction and discussions. Additionally commercial systems such as Skype are employed to hold online tutorials, guest presentations, virtual site visits and interviews.

Full-time:
The full-time learning Construction Project Management course is based upon campus attendance.

Students will learn by a mixture of teaching and learning methods, including Lecture, Tutorial, Workshop, Seminar, Practical Work, Case Study, Simulations, Games, Student Centred Learning and Private Study. Being a vocationally orientated course the teaching and learning is focused upon providing a sound knowledge and understanding of the subject material in the context of the Built Environment.

Textbooks

Students are expected to purchase core texts, all as indicated in the course Module Descriptors under the heading of Indicative Bibliographies and to pay all costs associated with the preparation of coursework e. g. posters, document folders and the like. Total course expenditure should not exceed £200 to £300 overall.

Placements and accreditation

This course is accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB). The School has been awarded Accredited Centre status by the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB).
