Course structure and content

The course curriculum will focus on both theory and practice but you will be actively encouraged to draw upon any relevant experience that you have already acquired. Course visits to relevant organisations and guest lectures, will further enhance your exposure to professional practice.

Semester 1: core modules addressing the information society, the organisation and retrieval of information as well as the provision of information services.

Semester 2: core modules covering both organisational management and the management of collections.

There is also the opportunity to complement these core modules with an optional module which will enable you to develop an area of special interest. In addition to these taught modules, you will also be able to access a series of research training sessions that will help to prepare you for the 15,000 word Masters dissertation in Semester 3.

Semester 3: 15,000 word Masters dissertation

With staff guidance and support, here you will have to the opportunity to conduct a piece of independent research within the information and library field. Not only will this enable you to further develop a specialism, but you will also acquire a range of transferrable research skills that are highly desirable in today’s employment market.

Contact time

Contact time is 6-10 hours a week during the first two semesters. In semester three you will arrange your level of contact time with your assigned dissertation supervisor.

Assessment

The taught part of the course, which is 120 credits, is delivered and assessed through lectures, student seminars, practical exercises, case studies and course work. Successful completion of 60 credits of taught modules makes you eligible for a Postgraduate Certificate, 120 credits gives eligibility for a CILIP accredited Postgraduate Diploma, or successful completion of your postgraduate dissertation leads to an accredited Master’s degree.

Accreditation

The Masters degree is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP) and the Institute of Information Scientists. Graduates will have a qualification which is recognised for admission to the Register of Chartered Librarians (subject to the Institute's chartership regulations).

What is the 'Master of Information Management' all about?

This programme offers students with a Bachelor's or Master's degree advanced non-technical training in information management, with an emphasis on the efficient and effective application and management of information technology in various business contexts (e.g. finance, marketing, HR, production and logistics, etc.). Following basic training in technology, the programme explores specific management issues in greater depth, particularly in order to develop the skills required to analyse information needs, design and manage information systems and fine-tune an IT strategy as an integral part of an overall business strategy.

The key focus is the preliminary design needed to develop and set up an information system. In completing your Master's thesis, you can apply these skills within a specific business context. Finally, a wide range of electives enables you to either explore specific areas in greater depth or gain a broader understanding through a multidisciplinary approach.

Objectives

This programme presents a non-technical curriculum in information management. It focuses on the effective and efficient application and management of information technology in a business setting. First, a basic technological background is offered, after which the management aspects are elaborated in more detail. The programme aims at developing skills in analysing information needs, the modelling and management of information systems and the alignment of information technology strategy with business strategy. Hence, the main focus is on the early phases of the information system development cycle. By means of the master project, skills acquired throughout the programme are applied in a concrete business setting. All departmental machines are linked by a high-speed local area network and operate under a single network file system so you can access your files from any of our machines. High-speed wireless access is also available throughout the department.

The University has a large modern library which contains all of the materials that you need for your course. Many of the books are also available online electronically meaning they are available to all students at all times.

Today’s societies require more and more geographical information. Think of physical planning, analyzing the spread of epidemic diseases, risk management, navigation systems, location based services, movement analysis, augmented reality, increasing use of maps and volunteered geographical information.

Our GIMA course offers a comprehensive MSc programme, focusing on the management and application of geographical information from a scientific perspective. Two additional aspects contribute to the uniqueness of the GIMA programme: GIMA is a joint venture involving four renowned Dutch universities: Utrecht, Delft, Twente and Wageningen; and GIMA is a blended learning programme, enabling you to do most of your studying from the place at which you study best (home or office). Only the first and the last week of each module are classroom-based.

Programme Summary

The MSc Geographical Information Management and Applications (GIMA) offers a challenging programme in the domain of Geographical Information Sciences (GIS). It will help you to develop your knowledge and skills in the field of geo-information management and geo-information applications. As a future geo-information specialist, you have to address a wide number of fundamental issues in today’s society such as: Why is geographical information needed and how can it be used to solve problems in the broadest variety of application fields (in flood risk management, spatial planning, location-based services, orientation and navigation, location of sales outlets, spatial aspects of crime, dealing with natural hazards and humanitarian disasters)? How can proof-of-concept geo-information and geo-information technology based solutions for societal problems be designed and implemented and how can the quality and usabiliy be evaluated? What are appropriate concepts, methods and techniques for the management of geo-information and geo-information processes, which may involve multidisciplinary teamwork?

The GIMA programme deals with all of these issues and, teaches, among other things, how to apply and manage geo-information in organisations and projects by critically understanding and using state-of-the-art geo-information theories and technology.

Features of the programme

This Master programme is offered by four renowned universities in the Netherlands: Utrecht University, Delft University of Technology, University of Twente and Wageningen University. As a student, you have access to the large pool of experts from all four universities. You can choose between a full-time (two years) or parttime (four years) programme. Exemptions are possible for students who have relevant working experience, making it possible to complete a part-time programme in approximately three years. GIMA is a blended learning programme. It consists of distance learning (85%) with contact weeks at the four universities (15%).

MSc Management and Information Systems: Change and Development (Distance Learning) aims to train 'hybrid managers' capable of understanding both the job of management in its organisational setting, and the role, management and jargon of information, information systems and information technology.

The course intends to help close the gap of knowledge, skills, culture and language that exists between functional managers and information systems professionals - a gap that results in the majority of information systems, including e-government, e-commerce, and e-development systems, under-performing or becoming failures.

You'll therefore graduate in a strong position to lead the successful development and implementation of new information systems in a wide range of organisations. By the course's end, you will have been provided with:

  • conceptual frameworks to understand the role of management of information, of information technology and of information systems in organisations
  • new knowledge and skills to help in the effective planning, development implementation and management of information systems
  • new knowledge and skills to help in the effective management and change of organisations.

Teaching and learning

Flexible study

The distance learning programme starts annually every January.

Participants study on the distance learning degree without leaving home or interrupting their careers. A typical study route would involve completion of four compulsory modules in the first year of study, and completion of the remaining four modules in the second year. A dissertation is undertaken in the first half of the third year. Using this route, participants complete the full Master's programme in two-and-a-half years. For example, those starting in January 2018 would complete in July 2020.

However, the programme is flexible and can accommodate faster or slower study and completion speeds in order to take account of work, family or other personal commitments. For example, after completing teaching period one, students can accelerate their study by spending a twelve-week semester in Manchester, studying alongside students on our face-to-face Master's programmes. Students can also slow down, perhaps taking only one module rather than two in a particular teaching period, or taking a complete break of a teaching period during which no modules are studied. Different study plans are possible as long as students complete the programme within four and a half years.

Coursework and assessment

Each module generally requires one assignment of 3,500 words. Assignments for all modules typically relate to organisational application of management and information systems ideas.

Participants must also complete a 12,000-15,000 word dissertation on a topic of their choice approved by the Programme Director. Students are encouraged to base their dissertations on topics of direct professional concern to themselves.

Course unit details

To complete the MSc programme, participants must complete eight taught modules plus a 12,000-15,000-word dissertation.

Study is undertaken via the University's e-learning system, which provides study materials, online resources, and interactive online tutorial discussions with the module tutor and other course participants. This programme is designed to develop two groups of participants: functional managers who wish to take greater control over, and make a more direct contribution to, change in their organisations via the development and implementation of information systems; and information systems professionals who wish to improve the success rate of the information systems they develop or use, and who may also wish to upgrade their management skills and knowledge.

This course has been designed to meet the need for competent and qualified staff that can enable organisations to maximise the value of Information Communications Technology (ICT) and IT Services. Course content

The rationale for the course is based on the recognition that the effectiveness of all IT Services is a vital aspect to the prosperity of any organisation. The course embraces best practice from leading service providers, and by continual reassessment, ensures all material is relevant to today’s computing and management expectations.

The course encompasses IT Service Management through a series of progressive units developing the student’s knowledge from fundamental concepts, through to units addressing IS strategy. Subjects covered include: management information, quality management, application development, infrastructure, service support and delivery, continuity planning, people and operational issues of implementing IT Service Management Best Practice. The course addresses current standards for IT Service Management, such as ISO20000 and ITIL®.

Core learning will be delivered electronically and you will be encouraged to engage with your fellow students and tutors online. Studying online will give you the flexibility to study at your convenience* without the need to travel or physically attend classes, whilst enhancing your employment opportunities. You will be supported throughout the process by our great teaching staff that are professionally qualified and have industry and academic experience to share with you.

Studying this programme will give you an opportunity to undertake PRINCE2 qualifications.

Course details

The course comprises eleven core modules and two elective modules. This enables you to tailor the course to suit your personal career plan. You will have the opportunity to participate in pitches and competitions, which teach practical entrepreneurship skills, including preparing investment pitches and management consultancy. You will have the opportunity to work with accomplished entrepreneurs, and on real-world international problems, to support your learning. The culmination of the learning process is your opportunity to develop a comprehensive business plan as an individual thesis project.

Individual project

The individual thesis project will enable you to write a detailed business plan for a start-up or for a growing business, or undertake a research project on an entrepreneurial business issue for an organisation. You will apply your management knowledge, skills and analytical abilities to a real-life entrepreneurial opportunity and demonstrate your ability to research issues, critically evaluate data and information, apply tools and techniques to create a persuasive value proposition, and write a plan or report concisely, informatively and persuasively.

Assessment

Taught modules (60%) are assessed by a combination of written assignments, exams and group work/presentation. The thesis project (40%) is written individually and submitted at the end of the course.
