Course detail

Aberystwyth University’s MA/Diploma in Information and Library Studies was one of the very first qualifications in this important area and is still one of the market’s most well regarded. It will introduce you to the challenges and best practice methods that determine the flow of information within and between organisations and their users. You will study how issues such as censorship, multiculturalism and intellectual freedom affect this movement. You will also study how technology impacts the delivery of information and library services in a range of important societal contexts, such as health, education and business arenas. By studying the principles and practical applications of these and many other subject areas, you will acquire skills that are highly desirable to all employers who rely on the flow of information including private companies, government bodies and public organisations.

The course is a full-time programme, taught over one year, and is divided into two parts over three semesters. In part one, you will study a number of crucial core modules whilst directing your own study by choosing specialist modules, together worth a total of 120 credits. In part two, you will apply your learning in the individual dissertation worth an additional 60 credits. If you do not wish to complete the individual dissertation then you can obtain the Diploma.

In the dissertation project, you will explore an approved topic in a dissertation totalling 15,000 words. You will engage with the central concepts, methods and techniques of the main streams of information and library research, and in doing so aim to contribute to the national understanding of data handling and information flow. Subject to the satisfactory completion of the dissertation, the MA in Information and Library Studies is awarded. In addition to the teaching input from this leading department, you will be exposed to guest speakers and visits to services local to the University. You will participate in a four-day study tour to London in which you will have the opportunity to observe a wide variety of libraries and information organisations in both public and private sectors, and to meet the professional staff involved.

Upon graduation from the MA/Diploma in Information and Library Studies, you will have demonstrated the academic excellence, personal rigor and interpersonal adaptability required by recruiting corporate bodies, government agencies and research institutes alike. As someone with a wealth of up-to-date theoretical knowledge and practical experience, you will be on the cutting edge of the subject. In a competitive jobs market, your particular skills set, proven through highly relevant business, education and health applications, will make you highly desirable to employers from a range of industries.

Format

Contact time is approximately 10 hours a week in the first two semesters. During semester three you will arrange your level of contact time with your assigned supervisor.

Assessment

The taught part of the course (Part 1) is delivered and assessed through lectures, student seminars, practical exercises, case studies, course work and formal examinations. Successful completion allows the award of a Diploma. The subsequent successful submission of your research dissertation (Part 2) leads to the award of an MA.

Our MSc in Human Resource Management and Consulting is an intensive full-time programme lasting 12 months.
The programme is divided into two 11 week semesters and the dissertation period which runs from June-September.

Dissertation

During the final three months of the degree you will produce a dissertation. This is your opportunity to explore a particular topic that has been covered during the programme in far greater depth.

Teaching & Learning Methods

You will be exposed to a variety of teaching and learning methods that could include: interactive lectures, case studies, seminar presentations and group project work. As this is a Masters level course, we place a significant emphasis on independent, directed, private study that is often conducted in learning sets or groups.

Assessment

A variety of individual and group assessment methods are used throughout the degree including assignments, exams, presentations, reports and exercises. The dissertation consists of a 10-15,000 word extended piece of individual research, supervised by a member of faculty.

A student enterprise suite (opened by Swansea Alumnus Sir Terry Matthews in 2013): The School of Management is one of the few UK universities which gives students access to a dedicated entrepreneurship start-up suite. We offer a range of business support facilities such as business mentoring for start-ups and an active entrepreneurship society. We also provide a range of physical facilities for students including a hot-desking suite for student start-ups, print copy facilities, 3-D printing for rapid prototyping and a range of meeting or production spaces.

A financial trading and simulation room: In summer 2013 the School of Management opened a new trading and simulation room. This facility includes state-of-the-art computing facilities and is designed to support simulation activities – both within the financial sector such as investment and trading as well as a range of business topics such as supply chain management, decision analysis and operations management. We are one of a select few schools in the UK to offer a dedicated trading and simulation suite to our students. The suite is home to our investment society and is backed by global trading and investment company OSTC.

Expanded student social space: We provide a Junior Common Room (JCR) for all our undergraduate and postgraduate students to meet, relax and socialise. We also provide several group work rooms with presentation facilities for students to come together on group projects and practice team working or presentation skills.

Course detail

The course accepts two intakes every year, one in April and another in September. Applications are welcomed throughout the year.

The skills of information and library professionals are in demand as employers recognise the necessity for staff to identify, organise, retrieve and make accessible information as it exists in paper, electronic and multimedia formats.

On this course you will be introduced to the key information handling skills as well as the opportunity to develop your ICT, management and interpersonal skills. You will be equipped with the knowledge and skills for professional work. In addition, as the programme is studied at a distance, you should be able to feedback your newly acquired knowledge into your workplace as you progress.

The university has a proud tradition of research excellence, as demonstrated in the most recent Research Excellence Framework (2014) assessment. It placed the university in the top 50 institutions for research power and intensity. It submitted 77% of eligible staff and 95% of the university's research was of an internationally recognised standard.

Format

Contact time can be arranged remotely with your tutor. Attendance at at least two study schools is required and these provide the main contact.

Assessment

The programme is assessed on the basis of coursework in Part One and the dissertation in Part Two. Successful completion of Part One allows the award of a Diploma. The subsequent successful submission of your research dissertation (Part Two) leads to the award of an MA.

COMPANY ANALYSIS AND PROFILE

Students will select a company with international business located in different national culture. The purpose is to evaluate the impact of organization design on human resources roles and responsibilities. The objective is to gather public and internal information to develop their own analysis of the situation.

The program encourages effective teamwork as the major part of modules expects students to work in groups. These groups will consist of students of different nationalities and rhythms, as some students attend courses part-time.

RESEARCH TECHNIQUES AND PROJECT PROPOSAL

A research techniques module has been created to provide the skills required to effectively work on the Final Management Projects and on future professional projects.

FINAL MANAGEMENT PROJECT

The second year of the program is dedicated to the Final Management Project, a written work of approximately 20,000 words, conducted under the supervision of a tutor from GGSB. Students will choose an aspect of International HR Management and are encouraged to link the chosen subject matter to their future career. The project can be completed in parallel with full-time employment or an internship based in France or abroad.

FOREIGN LANGUAGES

Operating in an international environment requires foreign language fluency and therefore a foreign language module is an option on the program for all students.

Non-French speakers may study French (beginner to advanced level). This option is highly advised for those who are looking to become professionals in France. French speakers may choose from a number of other languages at beginner level.

Structure and Content

-Our full-time MSc degree in Management programme lasts 12 months
-Divided into two semesters and the summer period
-All students study the same five core courses in Semester 1
-Semester 2 consists of one further core course and four optional courses

Option to specialise

If you pass the optional taught units plus a dissertation in a particular area of specialism you will graduate with one of the following combinations:
-MSc in Management with Finance
-MSc in Management with Marketing
-MSc in Management with Operations Management
-MSc in Management with Corporate Social Responsibility
-MSc in Management with Human Resource Management

General route

If you choose options which result in you not having studied three courses from a particular specialism, or if the dissertation is in a different subject from the optional course taken, you will graduate with an MSc in Management.

Summer period

During the summer period you will be able to choose between two tracks: (1) dissertation track and (2) practice track.
Both tracks allow you to demonstrate critical insight and reflective thinking about business/management/policy issues. The tracks also help develop your written and presentation skills, and your ability to develop effective arguments. All of these attributes are transferable skills relevant to the workplace and your future career.

Dissertation track

The dissertation track gives you the opportunity to do a piece of substantial work on your own, demonstrating originality, innovation, drive, and determination. The dissertation also enables you to plan and execute your own project, giving you complete choice and flexibility.

Practice track

The practice track allows you to undertake a number of tasks, both working in teams with other members of your cohort and working individually. The practice track is designed to allow you to apply learned concepts and theories to practical problems and issues, including a management problem which will be presented to you by an organisation. This track also provides opportunities for gaining practical experience in running team projects.

Unilever to present Case Week Project

The world-leading fast-moving consumer goods company, Unilever, represented by Tony Dunnage, Group Environmental Manager for Unilever, will present a business problem to practice track students on 15 June as part of Case Week.

You will then have two weeks to propose your own solutions to the problem, using the skills and knowledge gained during the programme, under guidance from your supervisors. The week will culminate with poster presentations to Unilever on 26 June.

Unilever is one of the oldest multinational companies. Its products are available in over 190 countries and it owns over 400 brands.

Government Loans

A new system of postgraduate loans for Masters courses is being developed for students at English universities. There will be loans of up to £10,000 available for Masters students starting a course in 2016/17.
