Typically information governance/security and law have been taught as distinct subjects in different discipline areas. In recognition of the relationship that exists between information governance/information security and the protection of personal data this programme brings together these subjects in one multi-disciplinary qualification.

The Postgraduate Certificate in Data Protection Law and Information Governance is a distance learning course that has been specifically designed to meet the needs of professionals already working in data protection and/or information governance. You will study three modules. The first of these, the legal research module, will develop your ability to undertake legal research and to present your research findings appropriately. In the second module you will develop your understanding of information governance and security principles that underpin the management of an organisation’s information assets. The third module will focus upon data protection law and practice.

The programme will not only provide you with valuable knowledge of current law and proposed developments to the law and to the principles of information governance, it will also enhance your ability to advise upon both information governance and data protection. The research, writing and presentation skills you will develop will also be of use to you in your working environment. Unlike typical CPD type learning this programme will challenge you to undertake critical evaluation of the law and to consider the application of information governance and security to your own/a chosen organisation.

This programme is delivered jointly by academics within Northumbria Law School and the iSchool, in the Faculty of Engineering and Environment. Northumbria Law School is actively involved in research and consultancy in the field of data protection, information sharing, freedom of information and privacy law. The iSchool, which delivers the information governance and security module, is widely recognised for its innovative distance and work-based learning programmes in information and records management and for its related research.

This course is delivered by a team of solicitors and academics with extensive experience in data protection and information governance, who are actively researching the area. In addition our team also boast memberships to key professional bodies, in addition to editing industry publications such as the Records Management Journal.

Teaching And Assessment

This course is primarily delivered online to provide flexibility and the ability for you to study at times convenient to you. We believe, however, that opportunities to engage with your tutors and with fellow students are an important part of your learning experience. On two of the modules you will be offered the opportunity to meet your tutors and attend lectures or workshops at the University at an optional study day. All of the content will be available online should you not be able to attend. On the third module you will be encouraged to engage with your tutor and with fellow students via the module discussion board.

Each taught module is assessed via written assignment. On the legal research module you will work in a group with other postgraduate students to undertake the research, writing and review of that assignment. On the data protection module and the information governance module you will submit an individual written assignment at the end of each module. As part of the assessment process you will be expected to undertake a critical evaluation of the law, and to consider information governance and security in your own or another chosen organisation.

Your course will be delivered online using the latest innovative software. Learning materials such as module handbooks, assessment information, lecture presentation slides, recorded lectures and electronic reading lists will be available via our highly accessible e-learning platform, Blackboard. You can also access student support and other key University systems through your personal account.

Research-Rich Learning

Research Rich learning (RRL) is embedded across the programme, reflecting the pervasive research culture of the law school. Your student journey commences with the Legal Research module. This module will help you to gain a clear awareness and understanding of appropriate legal research methods and legal sources and how to cite those sources. In your subsequent modules your tutors will expose you to a range of academic literature covering substantive data protection law and relevant information governance and data security frameworks and principles. You will also develop your legal research skills further as your tutors encourage you to discuss, evaluate and critically examine relevant principles and frameworks and as you undertake your own research in order to complete your module assignments.

Give Your Career An Edge

It is envisaged that most students who study this programme will already be employed within the data protection/information governance fields. It recognises that the introduction of a new data protection regulation will result in significant challenges for professionals working in the data protection field, and seeks to help you to develop the skills and knowledge which you will need to do your job professionally notwithstanding the changing legislation framework.

Your Future

This course provides academic recognition of your knowledge of data protection and information governance law and your ability to apply that knowledge to practice. It also provides a strong foundation for further study. Should you decide upon completion of the programme that you wish to further develop your knowledge of information rights law or information governance/security then Northumbria Law School and the Faculty of Engineering and Environment both offer masters programmes in these fields. This programme provides you with a stepping stone towards study a Masters in Law (an LLM). Successful completion of this programme exempts you from study of the first three modules on the Pg Dip/LLM in Information Rights Law and Practice.

What Does Britain Leaving The EU Mean For This Course?

We can confirm that we will not be changing the course in light of the Brexit decision. The focus in this course will be the current legal framework, and any likely reforms including the GDPR. There are several reasons why the course will not be changed at this particular point. Firstly there are no changes to the current legal framework on data protection or environmental information. This is well explained in a statement by the information commissioner's office https://ico.org.uk/about-the-ico/news-and-events/news-and-blogs/2016/06/referendum-result-response/ and was reiterated by Baroness Neville-Rolfe, the Government Minister responsible for Data Protection, on 4 July. These statements also acknowledge that there is a need for reform in data protection and that would have to be seen in the context of European data protection laws. Although it is not clear what the exact relationship of the UK and EU will be in the future there is a recognition that there will be a need for equivalency of data protection law in the UK with other countries. The need for equivalency of the law is likely to be necessary whether the UK is part of the single market, or if it exits the European economic area, in order for EU countries to send data to us as part of the 8th principle (See Schedule 1 of the Data Protection Act 1998). As such the GDPR still has relevance in our understanding of what would be required to achieve equivalent protection and what likely reforms on data protection may be considered in the UK. From an educational perspective the examination of reforms such as the GDPR provide a useful mechanism to critique current data protection laws, allowing for the discussion of strengths and weaknesses, even if all those reforms are not ultimately adopted. We will of course keep the position under review, as we do with all our teaching areas in order to ensure that learning material reflects both the current law and likely changes to that law.

Semester 1: core modules addressing the information society, the organisation and retrieval of information as well as the provision of information services.

Semester 2: core modules covering both organisational management and the management of collections.

There is also the opportunity to complement these core modules with an optional module which will enable you to develop an area of special interest. In addition to these taught modules, you will also be able to access a series of research training sessions that will help to prepare you for the 15,000 word Masters dissertation in Semester 3.

Semester 3: 15,000 word Masters dissertation

With staff guidance and support, here you will have to the opportunity to conduct a piece of independent research within the information and library field. Contact time

Contact time is 6-10 hours a week during the first two semesters. In semester three you will arrange your level of contact time with your assigned dissertation supervisor.

Assessment

The taught part of the course, which is 120 credits, is delivered and assessed through lectures, student seminars, practical exercises, case studies and course work. Successful completion of 60 credits of taught modules makes you eligible for a Postgraduate Certificate, 120 credits gives eligibility for a CILIP accredited Postgraduate Diploma, or successful completion of your postgraduate dissertation leads to an accredited Master’s degree.

Accreditation

The Masters degree is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP) and the Institute of Information Scientists. Graduates will have a qualification which is recognised for admission to the Register of Chartered Librarians (subject to the Institute's chartership regulations).

The Master of Business Information Systems (MBIS) prepares you for careers in systems design, planning and management, as well as knowledge and information management. You gain the expertise to design solutions to business information problems, and to offer strategic guidance to organisations that will enhance their management and governance.

As an MBIS graduate, you may find work as a business analyst, systems analyst, consultant, project leader, IT manager, information management specialist, archivist or librarian.

The MBIS caters to students from a variety of backgrounds. If you do not have previous training in IT, the course includes preparatory units that will give you the IT knowledge needed for the remainder of the course. However, if you already have a degree in IT, you can accelerate your study with an exemption from these preparatory units, or perhaps study further elective units in areas of your choice.

The course gives you an opportunity to explore a wide range of areas, from enterprise systems, information systems design, and business intelligence to IT strategy and project management.

If your interests lie in information and knowledge management, you can pursue a specialisation in Archives and Recordkeeping or Librarianship and Information Science, accredited by professional organisations.

In your final semester, you may take part in an Industry Experience program, working in a small team with industry mentors to develop entrepreneurial IT solutions. Or you may undertake a minor-thesis research project, investigating cutting-edge problems in BIS under the supervision of internationally recognised researchers.

Overview

The course has a general form and also provides students with the option to specialise in archives and recordkeeping, and library and information science. Students may study the general form, complete either specialisation or combine both specialisations. The specialisations are not available to Malaysia, on-campus students.

Archives and recordkeeping

Records managers and archivists ensure that vital records of social and organisational activity are created, managed and made available to business for accountability, corporate memory, enterprise knowledge and cultural purposes. Work settings include most major private and public sector organisations, and archival institutions. Knowledge managers are concerned with developing strategies and processes for managing organisational knowledge and knowledge flows to achieve organisational goals, enhance performance and add value. A particular concern is developing an environment conducive to the creation, sharing and application of organisational knowledge, and systems that support these processes.

Business information systems studies

The general form of the course gives students the skills and knowledge to solve organisational information problems. The course caters for students who would like to be business analysts, information systems consultants and IT managers. Students will learn about information technology principles, systems analysis and design, enterprise architecture and systems, IT management and governance and project management. Students can select from a range of business information systems units to focus their studies in several areas of interest including business intelligence, user experience design and business process modelling.

Library and information science

Librarians and information specialists manage information and provide information services to clients in a wide range of contexts. They are concerned with analysing information needs, solving information problems, evaluating information sources, organising information, synthesising information into targeted information products, and training clients in the use of information products, services and systems. They work for commercial, government and community sector organisations, for information consultancies and as independent information brokers.

Course Structure

The course is structured in three parts, A, B and C. All students complete Part B (core studies). Depending upon prior qualifications, you may receive credit for Part A (foundation studies) or Part C (advanced studies) or a combination of the two.

Note that if you are eligible for credit for prior studies you may elect not to receive the credit.

PART A. Foundations for advanced business information systems
These units provide an introduction to information systems and business concepts, including system design and analysis as applied in professional practice. You will learn basic software programming and development concepts and database technology.

These units are intended for students whose previous qualification is not in a cognate field.

PART B. Core Master's study
These studies draw on best practices within business information systems to gain critical understanding of the theories and practice relating to information systems and business process design, IT strategy, IT governance, IT management and related issues. Your study will focus on project management as well as a choice of several areas of enterprise IT and information management practice.

PART C. Advanced practice
The focus of these studies is professional or scholarly work in the broad realm of business information systems.

You have two options.

The first is a minor thesis research program, consisting of a research project and a research methods training unit. Students wishing to use this Masters course as a pathway to a higher degree by research should take this first option.

The second option is a program of coursework involving advanced study and an Industry experience studio project.

Students completing the combined specialisation Archives and Recordkeeping/Library and Information Science complete the industry experience program.

Students admitted to the course, who have a recognised honours degree in a discipline cognate to information systems, will receive credit for Part C, however, should they wish to complete a research project as part of the course they should consult with the course coordinator.

The MSc Global Economic Governance and Policy is the most recent addition to the Department of Economics’ portfolio of masters programme. The programme builds on the department’s unique combination of expertise – in policy analysis, regional economics and critical theoretical perspectives – to provide students with an in-depth understanding of core policy debates in the area of global economic governance. Specifically, the programme focuses on:

- global economic governance: It offers in-depth specialisation in this area of wider global governance.

- economic policy: It provides high-level training in the understanding and critical evaluation of economic policy issues, design and solutions, their foundation in the evolution of economic theory and methods, as well as critical discussion of the application of policy design to real-world problems, such as issues of implementation and monitoring.

Structure

The MSc in Global Economic Governance and Policy is a new masters programme designed for professionals and postgraduate students, with or without a prior background in economics, who wish to gain a focused and in-depth understanding of contemporary economic governance and policy debates.

The MSc is taught through two dedicated core courses. The first, Global Economic Governance 1 deals with issues of Global Economic Policy. This covers international trade and investment relationships between countries, trade and industrial policies, global capital markets, the international monetary and financial system, multinationals, global production networks and labour in the global economy. The second core paper, Global Economic Governance 2 deals with issues of institutions and governance. This includes issues of governance reforms for developing countries, the theory of institutional economics informing these debates, the policy and theoretical debates around property rights reforms, anti-corruption, industrial policy, rents and rent seeking, democratization and related governance issues. In addition, students will choose one, two or three optional courses, depending on the weight of the courses (see the list below), from across a range of SOAS departments plus a 10,000 word dissertation.

Students can, but do not have to, choose a course structure that, in addition to the programme’s focus on policy analysis and training, provides research method training.

- Optional Courses

MSc GEGP students can choose either one (1 unit) course or two (0.5 unit) courses or three (0.33 unit courses) to make up a total of 1 unit from the following list of courses by department. The availability of open option courses in other FL&SS departments from the below list is conditional on the approval of individual course convenors as well as the usual restrictions with regard to pre-requisites, timetable compatibilities and availability of individual courses in any one academic year. Students should note that some courses are capped in terms of student numbers, and that students from home departments will be given priority in case the relevant caps are reached. All law courses are open only for students with an LLB or who take the Law pre-sessional course offered by the School of Law at SOAS.

- Economics Department

MSc GEGP students will be eligible to take any of the post-graduate courses offered in the Economics Department, pending permission by the course convenors on the basis of the students’ prior academic qualifications in economics. Economics options with CATS 22.5 (0.5 unit) modules will be made available subject to approval.

Teaching & Learning

Courses are taught in lectures and tutorial groups. Degrees are awarded on the basis of assessed coursework, examinations and the dissertation. Courses are generally assessed on the basis of a final examination (70%) and an essay or project-based coursework (30%). MSc degrees are taught over a period of twelve months of full-time study within a structured programme. In the case of part-time study, the degrees will be taught over two or three years.

The MSc Global Economic Governance and Policy is a new programme, starting in 2016/17.

Students enrolling in this programme will return to or pursue careers in a wide range of positions in public, private and non-governmental project management and policy advice, for which a thorough understanding of on-going issues in global economic governance is essential.

Dissertation/report

All MA students undertake an independent research project which culminates in a dissertation of 10,000–12,000 words.

Teaching and learning

The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures, seminars, computer laboratory and classroom practicals, with a strong emphasis on active learning and the acquisition of practical skills. Assessment is through a mixture of essays, reports, examination and practical assignments such as website design and the creation of indexing tools.

Placement

The work placement is open to full-time (compulsory) and part-time (optional) students and forms part of G030, The Library and Information Professional module. The work placement gives students experience of how the techniques they have learned may be applied in practice. Placements last for two weeks, and are undertaken at the beginning of the third term. We arrange placements individually for each student and do our best to match the placement with their interests and experience.

Employability

As a vocational Master's, this programme prepares students for employment in the library and information sector, and, in most cases, for promotion from their pre-library school role as a library assistant to a qualified librarian role, such as senior library assistant, assistant librarian, librarian and library manager. Students also choose careers in information provision, such as taxonomists and web designers. There are specialist employment agencies that place students in both short-term and permanent positions, so if students do not find their ideal post straight away, they usually find suitable employment while continuing to seek their ideal post.

The demands placed upon managers in the library and information profession are increasingly complex. Library and information managers have to cope with rapid change and development. This CILIP accredited degree (Diploma and Masters) has been devised as a response to the needs of the profession for Continuing Professional Development: to help professional practitioners cope with the demands placed upon them, and to prepare mid-career practitioners for the next stage in their career. It is therefore not designed to provide the student with a first qualification in information and library studies, but to update and progress existing knowledge and qualifications.

This Degree will suit you:

• If you wish to obtain a Masters degree or diploma from one of the UK’s leading departments
• If you wish to gain the knowledge and skills for managerial work in Library and Information Services
• If you wish to develop and update existing knowledge and qualification within an information or library service sector.

Objectives

• Enable senior library and information service staff to manage key resources through an understanding of their organisational value;
• Provide managers with specific skills in core activities;
• Offer an academic component to the career advancement of professionals;
• Enable employers to support Continuous Professional Development without the need for breaks in employment.

Course structure and content

This programme is offered in flexible distance learning mode as it is recognised that prospective students will not wish a mid-career break in order to update their qualifications. The length of the degree scheme is normally three years, but students may take between two and five years to complete their studies. Normally, the first two years (Part One) consist of a taught element, whereby students complete 120 credits. Those wishing to finish study at the end of the taught element will be eligible for a Diploma (120 credits). The remaining period (Part Two) is to complete a dissertation (60 credits), to gain the Master’s qualification (180 credits).

Students on this course will be required to attend two compulsory residential study schools in Aberystwyth. The first will be in September at the commencement of the course, and is designed to prepare students for the taught element (Part One) of the programme. The second is a research study school (offered during April and September) and is designed to prepare students for the dissertation (Part Two).

Completion requires accumulation of 120 credits for the award of the Diploma and 180 credits for the award of the Master’s degree.

Contact time

Contact time can be arranged remotely with your tutor. Attendance at at least two study schools is required and these provide the main contact.

Assessment

There is a variety of assignments in Part One, including reports, presentations, essays, critical reviews and case studies which enable you to relate theoretical knowledge to your own workplace. Part Two, is assessed on the Dissertation.

The Masters in Digital Curation is designed to train you in the enhanced skills required for collecting and curating digital information and preparing it for use by individuals and organisations. This Masters in Digital Curation will train you in the complexities of digital asset management. You will master the policies, procedures and governance required to ensure the integrity of digital material over time, and you will graduate with the skills and experience to handle information for any size of organisation, be it national, governmental or international.

In addition to subject-specific instruction, you will also be trained in mediation so that you can manage the dialogue between stakeholders in the new digital information ecology. Course structure and content

Our distance learning students participate in residential study schools and are supported by web-based conferencing facilities which enable them to communicate with each other – whether consulting about a particular assignment in one of the module conferencing areas, or just enjoying a light hearted exchange at the electronic students café - and with staff, easing the feeling of isolation that can sometimes be felt by distance learners.

The Diploma/MA in Digital Curation is divided into two parts: The first part (120 credits) is the taught course, successful completion of which reaches Diploma-level. The second part (60 credits) involves writing a dissertation, to be submitted for the Master’s-level qualification.

Tuition is provided through printed or digital study packs containing the core learning material, supplemented by a resource pack and a conference area on Blackboard (the Virtual Learning Environment), which provides information updates relevant to the course, and a directory of websites referred to in the study packs. Assessment is by means of a variety of written assignments including essays and reports. You can progress at your own pace, taking between two and five years to complete the course. On average, you should expect to spend 10 to 15 hours a week studying.

Contact time

Students on all courses are required to attend Study Schools in Aberystwyth. For most students this means attending three schools of approximately 4-5 days duration during the course. For the rest of the time you will work through specially designed self-study module packs supported by online learning materials.
