The Master of Business Information Systems (MBIS) prepares you for careers in systems design, planning and management, as well as knowledge and information management. You gain the expertise to design solutions to business information problems, and to offer strategic guidance to organisations that will enhance their management and governance.

As an MBIS graduate, you may find work as a business analyst, systems analyst, consultant, project leader, IT manager, information management specialist, archivist or librarian.

The MBIS caters to students from a variety of backgrounds. If you do not have previous training in IT, the course includes preparatory units that will give you the IT knowledge needed for the remainder of the course. However, if you already have a degree in IT, you can accelerate your study with an exemption from these preparatory units, or perhaps study further elective units in areas of your choice.

The course gives you an opportunity to explore a wide range of areas, from enterprise systems, information systems design, and business intelligence to IT strategy and project management.

If your interests lie in information and knowledge management, you can pursue a specialisation in Archives and Recordkeeping or Librarianship and Information Science, accredited by professional organisations.

In your final semester, you may take part in an Industry Experience program, working in a small team with industry mentors to develop entrepreneurial IT solutions. Or you may undertake a minor-thesis research project, investigating cutting-edge problems in BIS under the supervision of internationally recognised researchers.

High-achieving students who complete the research component may progress to further research study.

The course has a general form and also provides students with the option to specialise in archives and recordkeeping, and library and information science. Archives and recordkeeping

Records managers and archivists ensure that vital records of social and organisational activity are created, managed and made available to business for accountability, corporate memory, enterprise knowledge and cultural purposes. Work settings include most major private and public sector organisations, and archival institutions. Knowledge managers are concerned with developing strategies and processes for managing organisational knowledge and knowledge flows to achieve organisational goals, enhance performance and add value. A particular concern is developing an environment conducive to the creation, sharing and application of organisational knowledge, and systems that support these processes.

Business information systems studies

The general form of the course gives students the skills and knowledge to solve organisational information problems. The course caters for students who would like to be business analysts, information systems consultants and IT managers. Students will learn about information technology principles, systems analysis and design, enterprise architecture and systems, IT management and governance and project management. Students can select from a range of business information systems units to focus their studies in several areas of interest including business intelligence, user experience design and business process modelling.

Library and information science

Librarians and information specialists manage information and provide information services to clients in a wide range of contexts. They are concerned with analysing information needs, solving information problems, evaluating information sources, organising information, synthesising information into targeted information products, and training clients in the use of information products, services and systems. They work for commercial, government and community sector organisations, for information consultancies and as independent information brokers.

Course Structure

The course is structured in three parts, A, B and C. All students complete Part B (core studies). Depending upon prior qualifications, you may receive credit for Part A (foundation studies) or Part C (advanced studies) or a combination of the two.

Note that if you are eligible for credit for prior studies you may elect not to receive the credit.

PART A. Foundations for advanced business information systems
These units provide an introduction to information systems and business concepts, including system design and analysis as applied in professional practice. You will learn basic software programming and development concepts and database technology.

These units are intended for students whose previous qualification is not in a cognate field.

PART B. Core Master's study
These studies draw on best practices within business information systems to gain critical understanding of the theories and practice relating to information systems and business process design, IT strategy, IT governance, IT management and related issues. Your study will focus on project management as well as a choice of several areas of enterprise IT and information management practice.

PART C. Advanced practice
The focus of these studies is professional or scholarly work in the broad realm of business information systems.

You have two options.

The first is a minor thesis research program, consisting of a research project and a research methods training unit. Students wishing to use this Masters course as a pathway to a higher degree by research should take this first option.

The second option is a program of coursework involving advanced study and an Industry experience studio project.

Students completing the combined specialisation Archives and Recordkeeping/Library and Information Science complete the industry experience program.

Students admitted to the course, who have a recognised honours degree in a discipline cognate to information systems, will receive credit for Part C, however, should they wish to complete a research project as part of the course they should consult with the course coordinator.

Organisations operate within increasingly unpredictable, competitive, constrained and demanding environments. Information is crucial to their success as it is required for decision making at all levels. Consequently there is a need to understand the strategic importance of information and develop agile, effective and secure ways to exploit it to its full potential. To do this, effective information capability management must be developed throughout the organisation so that the right information is available to the right people at the right time in an effective, efficient and secure manner.

An appropriate infrastructure is required to enable effective information capability management to address strategic business needs. This is dependent on joined-up systems of processes, technology and appropriately skilled, competent and motivated people focused on delivering clearly understood business benefit. The Information Capability Management (ICM) MSc has been developed to address these important issues.

Overview

Skilled professionals are needed to enable organisations to realise the strategic benefits that successfully exploiting information can provide. Success in business of all types and in all sectors, both public and private, is dependant on:

•Understanding the value of information as a strategic asset
•Developing agile, effective and efficient systems that make this information available.

The internationally recognised Information Capability Management course successfully supports the development of these professionals. Information systems (IS) today are large, complex, varied in form and distributed, serving different types of people who use a variety of devices to access information. Specialists who recognise diverse business needs, and have a systematic approach to understanding the impact of technology on organisations, are essential to the success of any IS/IT strategy. Equal in importance to the architectures of systems and the supporting technologies, is the management and delivery of content, whether in the form of data, documents, images and sound.

In addition to the permanent Faculty of award-winning practicing architects and published scholars, the Abedian School of Architecture has developed partnerships with leading educators and professionals around the world who actively contribute to the architectural program. 

State of the art resources

Students have complete access to all the Architecture equipment and studios. The School is characterized by very small class sizes in a dedicated studio environment. Students have 24/7 access to the brand new architecture building, designed by Sir Peter Cook and Gavin Robotham of CRAB Studio, London. A strong studio culture is driven by student collaboration, social engagement, and consistent one-on-one interaction with academic staff. The Workshop and Digital Fabrication Lab provides opportunities in design as part of the new generation of architecture. About the program

The Master of Architecture at the Abedian School of Architecture is designed to develop the emerging architectural professional to be fearless in their design ability, as well as possess the confidence to change the world and the habitats of the future through their creative design skills, imaginative vision, strategic thinking and technical proficiency. The Master of Architecture is delivered through a comprehensive design studio environment, current issues are debated through historical and philosophical architectural thought as well as contemporary states of urban habitation, challenges to a sustainable ecology and the ramifications of modern technology. Professional accreditation

The Australian Institute of Architects and the Board of Architects of Queensland currently recognise and accredit the Master of Architecture program. The Bachelor of Architectural Studies is recognised as the normal pathway to the Master of Architecture.

The Master of Architecture program is delivered within a comprehensive design studio environment. Each studio contains a combination of practical and professional applications, theoretical studies, technical proficiency and conceptual rigour. Geo-information has become increasingly important to society as the number of environmental issues continue to rise: Geo-information provides the data we need to manage both the natural and social environment. It is indispensable for a broad range of domains like spatial planning, water management, nature conservation, environment management, agriculture, energy supply, disaster management and traffic and safety. The MSc GIS programme at Wageningen University offers you a blend of geo-information science methods, technologies and applications. The combined use of earth observation techniques (Remote Sensing) and Geographic Information Systems for problem-solving within the environmental and social disciplines is a unique feature of the Wageningen Approach. During your study, you take courses on the acquisition, storage, analysis and visualisation of spatial data. During his career, Frank worked within fields where the use of GIS is unique, challenging or still developing. After a few GIS positions at mostly commercial companies, he is now working at an NGO in Nigeria on the eradication of polio. For the project he has temporarily moved to Nigeria to set up the GIS work, together with a team of 20 Nigerian GIS specialists. He is now working in a multicultural environment just like during his master in Wageningen. Developed information systems are in reality socio-technical systems incorporating people, technologies and content. The information systems specialist becomes a more broadly based information professional as they extend their range and scope of operations towards the end users and their environments. Course detail

This course builds on typical undergraduate computing courses studied at level 4 and 5 or equivalent ( such as HND) by offering a level 6 entry route 'integrated' to a level 7 Masters course.

The two year combination provides a route to develop new knowledge and skills in areas critical to the introduction and success of modern information systems for enterprises. The course also provides a route for people with other backgrounds and experience to engage with the world of information systems. It helps you gain a full understanding of how information systems are designed and constructed, and of the impact of technology and its integration into an organisation. It will also give you the skills you need to work effectively in a business-consulting environment, and provide a solid basis for research.

To qualify for the award of MSc Information Systems (Integrated), candidates on the integrated pathway must study five level 6 modules consisting of 20 credits each and two 10 credits each, and six level 7 modules consisting of 20 credits and a 60 credits dissertation module.

City’s MA/MSc Library Science examines contemporary questions of information communication from a framework of information history and philosophy. Our focus is divided equally between theory and its application to practice. The course spans the fundamental concepts of documentation, collection management, information organisation, access, information literacy, use of new and emergent technologies, methods of investigation and analysis, socio-political implications and policy formulation.

The course equips you with a deep understanding of collection-orientated institutions and services, and their relevance and impact within society. Teaching and learning

The teaching and learning methods we use mean that your specialist knowledge and autonomy develop as you progress through the course.

Taught modules are normally delivered through a series of 30 hours of lectures.

Lectures are normally used to:
-Present and exemplify the concepts underpinning a particular subject.
-Highlight the most significant aspects of the syllabus.
-Indicate additional topics and resources for private study.

In addition to lectures and tutorial support, you also have access to a personal tutor. This is an academic member of staff from whom you can gain learning support throughout your degree. In addition, City’s online learning environment Moodle contains resources for each of the modules including lecture notes, further reading, web-based media resources and an interactive discussion forum.

We expect you to study independently and complete coursework for each module. This should amount to approximately 120 hours per module if you are studying full time. Each module is assessed through coursework, where you will need to answer a variety of assignments to show that you are able to apply your theoretical learning to practical situations.

Communication and networking via social media is an integral part of our Library Science masters course, and in preparation for professional practice, you are expected to engage with blogs, Twitter and other relevant communication media as part of your studies. Face-to-face participation in student and new professional forums including research seminars, workshops and conferences is actively promoted. You are encouraged to present your work (assignments, dissertation) to the wider LIS community for discussion and development.

The course culminates with an individual project. This is an original piece of research conducted with academic supervision, but largely independently. The individual project (dissertation) allows you to demonstrate your ability to think and work independently, to be aware of and to comprehend current issues within the discipline and practice, to initiate ways of investigating and solving current problems or questions, and to deliver results and solutions on time.

The individual project is a substantial task. It is your opportunity to develop a research-related topic under the supervision of an academic member of staff. This is the moment when you can apply what you have learnt to solve a real-world problem or to develop further, contemporary conceptual theory in library science.

Modules

The MA/MSc in Library Science is offered as a one year full-time course, or two year part-time course. On successful completion of the course, you can choose between the award of MA or of MSc. This is usually based on the arts or science content of the work undertaken for the degree, and/or your career aspirations. The course structure and modules are the same for either award. The difference occurs in the focus of the assignments and the dissertation.

You can expect to study for approximately 40 hours per week full-time, and 20 hours per week part-time. The actual time required will vary according to the individual, and with existing experience and prior study.

The course comprises seven core modules and one elective module. These taught modules run during the first and second terms, whilst the third, summer term is reserved for the dissertation. Each of the modules counts for 15 credits, and requires approximately 150 hours work, of which 30 hours are face-to-face instruction (this may be lectures, seminars, group work, discussion or practical work), and 120 hours are self-directed study.

On successful completion of eight taught modules, students can progress to the dissertation. The dissertation is worth 60 credits, and takes around 400 hours. This is an original piece of research conducted with academic supervision, but largely independently.

The goal of library and information science is to enable access to, use of, and consequent understanding of information. To do this, the discipline is concerned with the processes of the information communication chain: the creation, dissemination, management, organisation, preservation, analysis and use of information, instantiated as documents.

Course detail

The course offers a flexible structure that is tailored to the needs of individual student’s research interests. Seminars and lectures are organised along two basic streams: 1) one focuses on sustainability and environmental design from a more technical point of view; 2) the other emphasises the socio- political and cultural context of architecture and cities with an approach rooted in the humanities and social sciences. Students may participate in both streams, but can also focus on one only. In the second term there is choice of more specialist seminars within both streams. Learning Outcomes

By the end of the programme, students will have acquired the type of research training required to carry on to the PhD, or if conceived as a standalone degree, will have acquired the skills to specialise and enhance their professional prospects.

Assessment

- The dissertation of not more than 20,000 words represents 50% of the overall mark. The word count includes footnotes but excludes the bibliography. Any appendices will require the formal permission of your Supervisor who may consult the Degree Committee. Students submit two hard copies and one electronic copy of their thesis for examination at the end of July.

- An oral examination (viva voce) on the dissertation and on the general field of knowledge within which the work submitted falls may be required. Students must remain in or be prepared to return to Cambridge for such oral examinations, which will be held in September.

- Three essays of 3,000 - 5,000 words including footnotes but excluding the bibliography, on topics approved by your supervisor and the Faculty will be presented for examination. One will be submitted at the beginning of the Lent (Spring) term and the additional two at the beginning of the Easter (Summer) term respectively. The three essays represent 50% of the total mark.

- Students undertake a review of their work on a termly basis day which take place at the end of the Michaelmas (Autumn) and Lent (Spring) Terms and the beginning of the Easter (Summer) Term. Students present their work to a supportive forum which will include academic critics who will provide constructive criticism about the students' proposed essays and dissertations.

Continuing

To continue to read for the PhD degree following the course, MPhil in Architecture & Urban Studies students must achieve an overall total score of at least 70%. Continuation is also subject to Faculty approval of the proposed research proposal, and, the availability of an appropriate supervisor.

CAT’s 40 years of sustainable education experience has led to the development of courses that not only tackle environmental issues, but focus on sustainability at the core of every aspect of learning. The annual Summer School enables students to design, detail and build a structure at CAT using the local materials available.

What qualification will you receive?

Successful completion of the programme at the Centre for Alternative Technology leads to the award of Masters of Architecture (M.Arch) by the University of East London *subject to validation.

Methods of assessment

Students are continuously assessed via essays, reports, presentations and project design work.
There is a final exhibition of students’ designs exhibited in the prestigious WISE building and assessed by external examiners.

The M.Arch: Sustainable Architecture is currently seeking prescription by the Architects Registration Board (ARB). The M.Arch: Sustainable Architecture updates CAT’s existing Part II validated course, the Professional Diploma in Architecture: Advanced Environmental and Energy Studies, which has been successfully running since 2008 . On prescription by ARB it will offer a masters level Part II architecture course and will be subject to periodic reviews, for the purposes of entry onto the United Kingdom Register of Architects. Prescription is normally granted on a four-yearly basis subject to ARB being satisfied that standard requirements have been met.

Alongside their design and academic work, students of the Master in Architecture also participate in a variety of building projects. This allows them to get practical experience and understanding of the complexities of what happens once their designs leave the architectural studio. During these projects architecture students work alongside MSc students who will go into complimentary building professions allowing for networking and a wealth of transferable knowledge.

Immersive learning environment

Optional residential module weeks include lectures, seminars, group work and practicals. Applied work tends to dominate later in the week once we have laid the theoretical groundwork. These module weeks provide a truly immersive environment to escape daily life and apply yourself to new learning. Many eminent experts give guest lectures or hold seminars during these modules, as it is a course which seeks to draw on the expertise and learning of the whole environmental sector.

Information systems (IS) today are large, complex, varied in form and distributed, serving different types of people who use a variety of devices to access information. Specialists who recognise diverse business needs, and have a systematic approach to understanding the impact of technology on organisations, are essential to the success of any IS/IT strategy.

Course detail

Equal in importance to the architectures of systems and the supporting technologies, is the management and delivery of content, whether in the form of data, documents, images and sound. Increasingly, the fundamental systems comprise digital architectures and networks which then embody and enable the distribution of digital content. Developed information systems are in reality socio-technical systems incorporating people, technologies and content. The information systems specialist becomes a more broadly based information professional as they extend their range and scope of operations towards the end users and their environments. Providing services to users and people at large and ensuring information resources deliver value is equally a part of the wider world of information systems.

It helps you gain a full understanding of how information systems are designed and constructed, and of the impact of technology and its integration into an organisation. It will also give you the skills you need to work effectively in a business-consulting environment, and provide a solid basis for research.

Internship

During the Internship you will work for 6 months with an employer. The internship allows you to apply your theoretical knowledge to a practical work-based situation. It will allow you to improve existing skills and acquire new ones, explore various career opportunities, network and be part of a team. This will improve your understanding of the world of work and professional practice in the workplace. It will also enhance your career prospects, allowing you to focus on your potential career path.

Format

Diverse methods are used to explore all aspects of the field. A strong supportive culture exists amongst the course tutors which enables students to achieve their potential.

Assessment

Course assessed work is a significant part of the total assessment. There is practical work, report writing, critical academic writing and the skills and knowledge gained in these contribute to a capacity to deliver a high quality dissertation.

There are a number of end of module exams. Course tutors provide appropriate support throughout the module to ensure candidates are well prepared.

Career and study progression

The course aims to provide routes into a number of careers; information officers, librarians, information service staff, content and intelligence gatherers, analysts, researchers,editors,data managers, multimedia content workers,
marketing research.

In the MEngSc Information Technology in Architecture, Engineering, and Construction (Bauinformatik) you will learn how to apply computer science technologies to sustainable design, facilities management, energy management, and construction management.

The course is designed for professionals as well as young graduates from all computer science and engineering disciplines who want to improve their knowledge of customising information and communication technologies to support the design, commissioning and operation of civil engineering systems.

The course addresses the increasing need for engineers and architects with advanced knowledge and skills in the application of information and communication technologies to support sustainable design and operation of buildings and energy systems, facilities management, virtual construction, building information modelling (BIM) and structural engineering.

Lecturers are broadcast through the web, and can be attended either in UCC or from a remote location. Experts from six European universities contribute their knowledge to the course.

Course Details

You will get hands-on experience in planning, customising, and maintaining state-of-the-art software systems for the needs of the AEC and FM sectors with an emphasis on complex engineering systems such as smart buildings. The course consists of four pillars:

- the acquisition of new knowledge and practical skills in selected engineering disciplines
- the acquisition of knowledge and skills in selected areas of computer science
- the application of the newly-acquired knowledge in two projects
- the development and submission of a minor research thesis.

In the first teaching period students acquire knowledge of:

- Smart Buildings, Facilities and Energy Management
- Software Engineering
- Knowledge Management or Computer Mediated Communication.
- Building Information Modelling (BIM), Data Warehousing, and E-business
- Virtual Construction, Automation in Construction or Finite Element Analysis (electives)

The two projects focus on:

- Software Engineering
- Information Technology for Energy Systems in Buildings.

The course is based on the principle of research-led teaching, ie. project work will be based on practical examples. Researchers and PhD students from UCC will be involved in mentoring and supervising assignments and projects. On completion of the course, you will be extremely attractive to employers who need engineering with a strong IT-background, working in the following areas:

- civil and energy-engineering consultancy
- facilities management
- energy service provision (ESCO)
- construction management
- building operations
- software engineering
- project management.

You will develop skills in:

- applying information modelling
- software engineering
- data processing
- data analysis techniques
- facilities and energy management
- structural analysis
- project and supply chain management in construction.

Format

The course can be taken on a full-time (one year) or part-time (two year) basis with an option to complete at postgraduate diploma level. Lectures are broadcast using web-technology and can be attended either in UCC, in your home, or at your workplace. The majority of lectures are scheduled outside normal working hours. Block seminars consisting of full-day events are available once a month during academic periods. The course requires the completion of two projects, but can be combined with a work placement. A minor thesis contribution begins when all taught modules are completed successfully and involves four months of research work.

Assessment

Modules focusing on the acquisition of new knowledge are assessed by written exams (60%), in combination with continuous assessment (assignments – 40%). Modules focusing on skills-development or knowledge transfer are assessed through the submission of reports or essays in combination with presentations. Projects are usually organised in groups. They are assessed through continuous assessment (team meetings, status review meetings) and a final report complemented by a final presentation. You must pass each module (40%) and achieve an average grade of 50% across all taught modules in order to be eligible to progress with the master’s thesis.

Careers

Recent publications report that a shortage of engineers has been identified by professional bodies across the European Union. In the UK and Germany alone, it is predicted that approximately 2,500 engineering positions need to be filled on an annual basis over the next five years (2012 to 2016). It is expected that employable candidates have an excellent background in how to efficiently exploit IT tools in order to execute engineering tasks in the most efficient but also in an interdisciplinary way. This course addresses the need for interdisciplinary expertise and skills in engineering, energy management and computer science.
