The Animal Science Masters Degree within the Institute of Biological, Environmental and Rural Sciences, Aberystwyth, UK, offers you the opportunity of a biological, scientific and professional training in the field of Animal Science. Appropriate management is essential in order to optimise animal welfare. Ensuring good animal welfare is an increasing concern to all those involved in managing and training animals. However, this needs to be balanced against the demands of production (meat, milk), athletic performance (equine sport, racing) or leisure. Through the study of animal biology and its application to nutrition, breeding and animal management, the post graduate in Animal Science will be ideally placed to ensure that these demands of production and welfare are appropriately balanced through the development and implementation of innovative management practices and dissemination of knowledge and advice to practitioners.

Format

The first part of the course is 120 credits of taught material, delivered in 2 semesters running from Sept to June. Part 2 is the dissertation. This is your opportunity to specialise and investigate in depth an area that excites you. Your dissertation can be done in our state of the art laboratories or possibly at another University. Assessment will be by course work such as essays, seminar presentations, case studies, poster presentations and final examinations in January and May.

A range of biological science modules will be taught in the first semester which will cover animal immunology, parasitology, bacteriology, endocrinology, growth and development, animal breeding, genetics, molecular genetics and principles of nutrition. This will provide you with an advanced biological science knowledge which will then be applied in semester 2. In semester 2 you will study statistical methodology in preparation for your Dissertation research, advances in bio and veterinary sciences and be given the choice of modules from a suite of livestock and equine science modules covering subjects such as: livestock or equine reproductive physiology and technology, grassland science, livestock or equine nutrition, equine anatomy, equine behaviour. Throughout the course, especially in the second semester, you will have an opportunity to explore specific areas of your own interest culminating in your research dissertation. In addition to gaining specialised knowledge in Animal Science the course aims to develop your more general skills such as written and oral communication, research skills, data handling and statistics, team work, information technology, problem solving etc.

The MRes in Biomedical Research: Bacterial Pathogenesis and Infection is a 12 month postgraduate course providing exemplary academic and research training. The Bacterial Pathogenesis and Infection stream is a specialised stream on a larger course (the MRes in Biomedical Research). This programme will provide research training in fundamental aspects of bacterial pathogenesis, host immunity and antibiotic resistance, with particular attention to the scientific, technical and professional acumen required to establish research independence. The emphasis will be on molecular approaches to understanding bacterial infection biology, as a function of bacterial pathogenic strategy and physiology, as well as resistance to host defences and antibiotic therapy, and is comprised of two 20-week research projects embedded within research-intensive groups and a series of lectures, seminars, tutorials and technical workshops.

Based in the MRC Centre for Molecular Bacteriology and Infection, the course provides an opportunity to learn directly from internationally-respected scientists through sustained interaction for the duration of the course. This programme will deliver training in: Molecular microbiology, including integration of molecular and cellular information to understand the genetic basis of virulence; modelling host and microbial aspects of infection to help characterise the host-pathogen interaction and immunity; functionality and physiological relevance of microbial virulence factors; mechanisms of antibiotic resistance and persistence; derivation of mechanistic approaches to problem-solving in molecular and cellular biomedical science.

Course Objectives
The emphasis is on molecular approaches to understanding infection as a function of bacterial pathogenic strategy and physiology. This research-oriented approach to training in biomedical science will comprise both theoretical and practical elements. The course will expose students to the latest developments in the field through two mini-research projects and a series of technical workshops. Students will gain experience in applying technologically advanced approaches to biomedical research questions.

Specifically the course will deliver research training in:

• Molecular bacteriology, integrating molecular and cellular information to understand the genetic basis of microbial virulence.
• Modelling host and microbial aspects of infection to help characterise the host-pathogen interaction and immunity.
• By experimentation, understanding the biochemical functions and physiological relevance of microbial virulence factors and antibiotic resistance.
• Derivation of mechanistic approaches to problem-solving in molecular and cellular biomedical science.

Individuals who successfully complete the course will have developed the ability to:

• Demonstrate practical dexterity in the commonly employed and more advanced practical techniques of molecular and cellular microbiology
• Exercise theoretical and practical knowledge and competence required for employment in a variety of biomedical environments
• Identify appropriate methodology during experimental planning
• Interpret and present scientific data
• Interrogate relevant scientific literature and develop research plans
• Recognise the importance of justifying expenditure (cost and time) during experimental planning
• Recognise potential methodological failings and strategise accordingly

Biomedical scientists are key contributors to modern healthcare, including disease diagnosis, monitoring of therapy and research into disease mechanisms. This course offers postgraduate training in a selected biomedical science discipline, either Haematology and Blood Transfusion Science, Clinical Biochemistry and Immunology or Infection Science, together with opportunities to advance skills and knowledge in laboratory management and accreditation, plus modern developments such as genomics and stem cell technology. The MSc course is accredited by the IBMS; individual modules may also be studied for CPD accreditation.

The MSc Biomedical Science with Professional Experience is an extended full-time Masters programme with a substantive professional experience component. Within the professional experience modules, students have the option of undertaking an internship with a host organisation or, alternatively, campus-based professional experience. Internships are subject to a competitive application and selection process and the host organisation may include the University.

Students who do not wish to undertake an internship or are not successful in securing an internship will undertake campus-based professional experience, which will deliver similar learning outcomes through supervised projects and activities designed to offer students the opportunity to integrate theory with an understanding of professional practice.

This IBMS accredited course allows students who have studied biomedical sciences at undergraduate level both at home and overseas to develop their skills and knowledge, whether they are considering future employment within biomedical science laboratories or research routes. It will also benefit practitioners already in HCPC registered posts to aid career progression. The course can be studied on either a full time or part time basis, and individual modules can be taken for CPD.

The course offers the opportunity to specialise in a key area of biomedical science, extend practical laboratory experience and develop transferable and research skills to enhance future employability.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

Students will study Professional and Laboratory Skills in Biomedical Science, Research Skills plus they elect to study one of the following modules:
-Haematology and Blood Transfusion Sciences
-Infection Science
-Clinical Biochemistry and Immunology

And two of the following modules:
-Genomics and Regenerative Medicine
-Independent Study in Biomedical Science
-Evidence Based practice in Biomedical Science
-Quality Management and ISO standards
-Laboratory Management, Leadership and Training (suitable for current HCPC practitioners in management roles)
-Introduction to Laboratory Leadership, Management and Training (suitable for students who are not currently in management roles)

Additionally, the understanding gained from these modules will be demonstrated and applied in either the University-based project (12 months full-time or 24 months part-time, on course HLST132), or the professional experience modules giving students the option of undertaking an internship with a host organisation or, alternatively, campus-based professional experience.

HOW WILL THIS COURSE ENHANCE MY CAREER PROSPECTS?

MSc Biomedical Science graduates will be well placed to consider employment in several different areas of life sciences including the NHS, for example as a Trainee Biomedical Scientist in a pathology discipline or entry to the Scientist Training Programme.

Biotechnologies for Food Science

In the 2016-2017 academic year, the University of Padova inaugurated a new curriculum of the Master Degree “Biotechnology applied to Food Security and Nutrition” (Second Cycle Degree) entitled “Biotechnologies for Food Science " to be entirely taught in English.
The “Biotechnologies for Food Science " Master degree (MSc) is an interdisciplinary and research-oriented Master of Science Programme and explores how to produce healthier and safer food following a cross-cutting, farm/field-to-fork approach. It is focused on the application of advanced biotechnologies in food production and safety and it is the ideal trait-d’union between the requests of consumers, of producers in the agro-food sector and research applied to production and food-safety.
The course has a strong component on cutting-edge methods, such as genomics, bioinformatics, proteomics, metabolomics, nanotechnologies, all in the context of animal and crop production as well as food quality and safety. Theoretical lessons are mixed with practical training, offering hands-on experience in advanced DNA, RNA, and protein analysis together with substantial lab sessions in bioinformatics. Lectures will deal with food production, hygiene and quality, molecular methods of agro-food analyses, effects of agro-biotech products on human beings and environments. Moreover environmental stresses, disease mechanisms, pathogens and pests will be treated as essential to understand how to protect crop and farm animals and how food might impact on human health: the lectures move across animal infectious disease, immunology, microbiology, plant pests and pathogens as well as abiotic stresses to show how biotechnology might help preventing disease and improve food production. As consumers are increasingly worried about the presence of contaminants in food and on the real origin of what they eat; the Programme includes a course in food toxicology and regulation, and one on traceability for food authentication.
Our Programme is based at the Agripolis campus, where are located four departments of the School of Agriculture and Veterinary Medicine of the University of Padova, all of which contribute to the MSc course, offering the best opportunities for a rich, cross-disciplinary experience in a highly qualified scientific environment.

Who is the MSc candidate?

This programme is open to Italian and foreign students from the EU and abroad, interested in learning and implementing effective value-added practices for the production of high-quality food products both in the EU and in international markets. English knowledge must be minimum at B2 level (CEFR). Applying students might possibly have a three-year Bachelor’s degree in a field connected with the Master’s curriculum. Good background in molecular biology, biochemistry, and microbiology is requested.

How is the programme organised?

Biotechnologies for Food Science is a 2-year Master programme (120 ECTS, equivalent to a Master of Science). Requirements for graduation include courses and preparation and defense of the Master thesis. Students will be encouraged to spend a period of their studies abroad, through Erasmus+ or other local programmes and agreements. Financial support to meet part of the cost for thesis work is granted to best students.

First year
During the first year of the programme the student will acquire knowledge on animal and crop genomics, focusing on the most advanced methods for high throughput genomic analysis (transcriptomics, genome-wide SNP analysis, epigenomics) and on the most recent approaches for selective breeding (genomic selection, genomic prediction). In parallel, the student will learn how bioinformatics tools might be applied to manage large sets of data, how biological data bases are organized and how to link different types of data. Extensive practical training in bioinformatics will be offered with various sessions in a dedicated lab. Food-borne pathogens and the positive role of microorganisms in food processes will be examined in an integrated microbiology course, while the molecular basis of pathology, host-response to infection, epidemiology, and diagnostics of transmissible diseases will form the basis of two courses. A course on biotechnology for crop production will introduce the molecular and physiological basis of crop production. Biotechnological approaches to improve crop yield, with particular attention to fruit production, and to reduce impact of abiotic stresses will examined. Molecular tools for food traceability and an intensive practical lab in DNA/RNA/protein analysis applied to food control will conclude the first year.

Second year
In the second year, the first semester have three courses. One will focus on novel technologies (proteomics, metabolomics, nanotechnology) and their application to food production. A second one will extend knowledge on plant biotechnology exploring advanced technologies for crop disease and pest management. A third one will deal with contaminants in food and food legislation. The second semester is completely dedicated to lab internship. It is possible to join a research lab in the campus or to have a working stage in the private sector.

Health departments have highlighted the importance of controlling infectious diseases within hospitals and less intensive health care settings. Accredited training of infection control personnel has been recommended as a strategy to decrease health care related infections.

Who is this course for?

This course is particularly relevant for practitioners in rural and remote health settings, aiming to bring health practitioners up to date on the current knowledge and theories regarding those infectious diseases of relevance to populations in tropical Australia and its near neighbours.

Course learning outcomes

Graduates of the Graduate Certificate of Infection Control will be able to:
*Apply and adapt specialised knowledge, skills and technical competencies pertaining to infection prevention and control across a variety of health contexts, including rural, remote and Indigenous settings in developed and developing countries
*Critically analyse and synthesise a range of data and evidence to provide solutions to complex problems related to infection prevention and control
*Appraise the significance of healthcare-associated infections and their causative pathogens, and exercise high-level and independent judgement in the design, implementation and evaluation of strategies for their management across tropical, rural, remote and Indigenous communities
*Appraise and synthesise knowledge related to the education and continuing professional development of health personnel in infection prevention and control
*Communicate theoretical knowledge, skills and treatment modalities using high-level oral and written language skills, to a variety of audiences and cultural groups

Students who complete this course are eligible for entry to the Graduate Diploma of Nursing or Master of Nursing and may be granted advanced standing for subjects completed under this course.

English band level 3a - the minimum English Language test scores you need are:
*Academic IELTS – 7.0 (no component lower than 6.5), OR
*TOEFL – 577 (plus minimum Test of Written English score of 5.5), OR

*Pearson (PTE Academic) - 72

If you meet the academic requirements for a course, but not the minimum English requirements, you will be given the opportunity to take an English program to improve your skills in addition to an offer to study a degree at JCU. About the programme

UWS has an established reputation for delivering advanced biomedical sciences education – utilising our successful links with local NHS and industry laboratories, we provide discipline-specific experts to complement the skills of the University’s School of Science and Sport teaching staff.

The programme aims to give you a balance of theory, practical skills and application of a range of techniques relevant to the biomedical sciences such as medical genetics, immunobiology, and disease pathology. Two optional modules are offered, which allow you to specialise in either blood sciences, infection or pathology. The research-orientated nature of the programme will also offer an additional option for those wishing to retrain for a career in the pharmaceutical and healthcare industries.

Practical experience

Work-based learning modules are available to part-time students completing the IBMS specialist portfolio as an alternative to the discipline-specific modules.

Your learning

The exit award of MSc is dependent on successful completion of 180 credits. Full-time students study three 20 credit modules in both Trimester 1 and 2 and a 60 credit research project in Trimester 3.

• Disease, Detection, Monitoring and Therapy
• Research Design

You will also study a module in your chosen specialist discipline from:
• Blood Sciences
• Cell & Tissue Pathology

A taught module in the chosen discipline offers advanced understanding of the major systems and diseases with particular emphasis on laboratory diagnosis and research advances.

Upon successful completion of the taught modules you will undertake the MSc research project.

The MSc is a good qualification for careers in bioscience research, or for those wishing to progress to further study (PhD). However, it is primarily aimed at those wishing to work or already working as biomedical scientists in the NHS, where an accredited MSc is integral to career progression.

Note: To obtain the MSc, students will usually take 9 months to gain the Postgraduate Diploma and then normally an additional 3 months of study to gain the MSc, from the date of commencement of the project.

Please note a February intake is available for students studying on a part-time basis

These include an advanced chemical analysis lab: with state-of-theart chemical analysis for isotopic and elemental analysis at trace concentrations using ICPMS/OES and the identification of organic compounds using LCMS; and the Spatial and Pattern Analysis (SPAR) lab: providing high specification workstations, geographical information system (GIS) software, geochemical and image processing facilities to support data management in science research.
