Programme structure

The MSc programme will consist of five taught courses and a project or dissertation, spread over 11-12 months. Three courses are compulsory, and two are chosen from a series of options.

The PGDip programme will consist of five taught courses, spread over 7-8 months, with three compulsary courses and two chosen from a series of options.

The PgCert programme consists one core taught course over 3-4 months.

Teaching and Learning Methods

A variety of methods are used, including lectures, tutorials, workshops, laboratories and problem-based learning. As a result, you will develop a wide range of skills relevant to careers in infection biology research, diagnostics or drug development. The MRes in Biomedical Research: Bacterial Pathogenesis and Infection is a 12 month postgraduate course providing exemplary academic and research training. The Bacterial Pathogenesis and Infection stream is a specialised stream on a larger course (the MRes in Biomedical Research). This programme will provide research training in fundamental aspects of bacterial pathogenesis, host immunity and antibiotic resistance, with particular attention to the scientific, technical and professional acumen required to establish research independence. The emphasis will be on molecular approaches to understanding bacterial infection biology, as a function of bacterial pathogenic strategy and physiology, as well as resistance to host defences and antibiotic therapy, and is comprised of two 20-week research projects embedded within research-intensive groups and a series of lectures, seminars, tutorials and technical workshops.

Based in the MRC Centre for Molecular Bacteriology and Infection, the course provides an opportunity to learn directly from internationally-respected scientists through sustained interaction for the duration of the course. This programme will deliver training in: Molecular microbiology, including integration of molecular and cellular information to understand the genetic basis of virulence; modelling host and microbial aspects of infection to help characterise the host-pathogen interaction and immunity; functionality and physiological relevance of microbial virulence factors; mechanisms of antibiotic resistance and persistence; derivation of mechanistic approaches to problem-solving in molecular and cellular biomedical science.

Course Objectives
The emphasis is on molecular approaches to understanding infection as a function of bacterial pathogenic strategy and physiology. This research-oriented approach to training in biomedical science will comprise both theoretical and practical elements. The course will expose students to the latest developments in the field through two mini-research projects and a series of technical workshops. Students will gain experience in applying technologically advanced approaches to biomedical research questions.

Specifically the course will deliver research training in:

• Molecular bacteriology, integrating molecular and cellular information to understand the genetic basis of microbial virulence.
• Modelling host and microbial aspects of infection to help characterise the host-pathogen interaction and immunity.
• By experimentation, understanding the biochemical functions and physiological relevance of microbial virulence factors and antibiotic resistance.
• Derivation of mechanistic approaches to problem-solving in molecular and cellular biomedical science.

Individuals who successfully complete the course will have developed the ability to:

• Demonstrate practical dexterity in the commonly employed and more advanced practical techniques of molecular and cellular microbiology
• Exercise theoretical and practical knowledge and competence required for employment in a variety of biomedical environments
• Identify appropriate methodology during experimental planning
• Interpret and present scientific data
• Interrogate relevant scientific literature and develop research plans
• Recognise the importance of justifying expenditure (cost and time) during experimental planning

The Infection Sciences MSc is for biomedical scientists registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) who wish to undertake flexible, part-time study towards a masters qualification in their specialist area of clinical pathology.

Designed to complement the professional qualifications of the Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS), the course allows you to expand your knowledge and skills in diagnostic laboratory medicine, learn to apply these skills to clinical diagnosis, laboratory management and research, and to develop as a reflective practitioner, all within the context of the Modernising Scientific Careers (MSC) initiative.

You will take specialist modules in infection sciences, exploring the theoretical, applied and professional aspects of medical microbiology. You will also engage in a large amount of work-related learning and gain support from clinical practitioners.

The course has been developed in consultation with senior managers, laboratory managers and training staff from the NHS biomedical science profession.

Course structure

You attend university for a maximum of one day per week. A typical week consists of six hours of teaching contact through lectures, seminars and workshops, and six hours of student-centered learning through directed reading and assessment preparation.

Assessment methods vary between modules, but all of them have a significant coursework component, which involves case-studies, essays, presentations and reflective evaluation. Some modules have examination components such as interim tests and end of module exams.

The course has been designed to fit in with a variety of personal and professional circumstances. You can take the infection sciences modules alone for the PGCert, additional modules for the PGDip or complete a research project as well for the full MSc qualification.

The MSc qualification is normally achieved after three years of part-time study.

•two infection sciences modules: exploring theoretical, applied and professional aspects of medical microbiology
•two modules that focus on the professional area of practice and work based learning to deepen your knowledge of biomedical science. These modules are only available to part-time students who are employed in clinical pathology departments

•a special topic option: you can select a topic from a range available in the School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Sciences; examples include diabetes, biomedical statistics, and oxidative stress and human disease
research methods module: you will focus on research methods and project design. This module includes preparation for the research project
•a laboratory-based research project: so you can explore the discipline of blood sciences in depth. The project is based on a topic within blood sciences and includes work conducted in the clinical pathology laboratory workplace.

You will study some of the listed modules with students from the Cellular Sciences MSc and the Blood Sciences MSc, allowing for a multidisciplinary environment where different perspectives on clinical pathology can be shared.

Degree information

The programme provides insight into state-of-the-art infection and immunity research, current issues in the biology of infectious agents, the pathogenesis, prevention and control of infectious diseases, and immunity and immune dysfunction.

Students learn from UCL scientists about their research and are trained in the art of research by carrying out a full-time research project in a UCL laboratory.

Aimed at junior doctors currently undergoing, or about to undertake, specialty training in an infection discipline, this programme is open to trainees in the UK and worldwide.

This degree will also be attractive to those who have completed their training but wish to fulfill continuing medical education requirements or those who wish obtain a formal qualification in Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases.

The programme is aligned with JRCPTB and RCPath training in infection disciplines: Combined Infection Training and Higher Specialty Training in Infectious Diseases, Medical Microbiology and Medical Virology.

Postgraduate Professional Development (PPD) is aimed at working professionals who want to advance their knowledge through a postgraduate-level course(s), without the time or financial commitment of a full Masters, Postgraduate Diploma or Postgraduate Certificate.

You may take a maximum of 50 credits worth of courses over two years through our PPD scheme. These lead to a University of Edinburgh postgraduate award of academic credit. Alternatively, after one year of taking courses you can choose to transfer your credits and continue on to studying towards a higher award on a Masters, Postgraduate Diploma or Postgraduate Certificate programme. Although PPD courses have various start dates throughout a year you may only start a Masters, Postgraduate Diploma or Postgraduate Certificate programme in the month of September. Any time spent studying PPD will be deducted from the amount of time you will have left to complete a Masters, Postgraduate Diploma or Postgraduate Certificate programme.
