It promotes analytical and management skills by focusing on questions raised in relation to public policy issues, the commercial environment and the supply of foods which meet supply chain customer and consumer requirements. The course

Whether you live to eat or eat to live, the indisputable fact is that we all need to be regular consumers of food and drink. The food industry offers more than careers based solely on farms or in retail food outlets. It is vigorous and dynamic, with the adoption of new technology and the provision of new products satisfying ever changing consumer demands.

An important part of the sector’s success relies on an integrated approach and the close links which have been forged between growers, wholesalers, food processors and retailers. To be successful in today’s fast moving food industry students are provided with a combination of modules focusing on core subjects relevant to the food industry, as well as key priorities facing today’s food industry.

Once students have completed the taught modules they commence their research project, which gives the opportunity to pursue their own interests and provides a valuable addition to their skills set.

How will it benefit me?

On completion of the course at MSc level, students will be able to use and evaluate food industry management techniques and assess their relevance to commercial practice under different technical and cultural constraints. You will learn to appraise the dynamic legal, economic and political environment within which food businesses operate.

Students become skilled in collecting, analysing and interpreting qualitative and quantitative data, technical and commercial information, as well as evaluating and exploiting the latest developments in technology. You will learn to identify solutions to food industry management problems appropriate to local, national and international circumstances.

You will become competent at identifying and solving information management and communication problems encountered by food industry managers and will be able to critically review the existing knowledge of a sector specific topic and relate to a hypothesis which will advance that knowledge. Students also undertake strategic analysis, integrating a range of food industry management techniques.

Course Overview

The MA Music Industry Entrepreneurship is delivered on the UWTSD London campus and at Tileyard Studios, King’s Cross, London. Tileyard Studios is the largest professional music community in Europe featuring 82 recording studios, 110 entertainment businesses and the new Tileyard Education Centre.

The programme is designed to prepare students for a future as label owners, publishers, managers, promoters, new technology pioneers and creative business specialists. In addition to the UWTSD London Campus facilities and resources, Tileyard Studios provides students with direct access to more than 1000 creative industry entrepreneurs, while developing cutting edge thinking and insight into the management and growth of independent record labels, music publishing, artist management, promotion, marketing and new technology entrepreneurship.

The course provides a critical understanding of music and entertainment management and organisations in a global context both on and offline. The core of the programme focuses on digital and independent entrepreneurial skillsets and practice as well as more traditional business methods within the context of the new mixed media economy. The course consist of six taught modules in Part I and an industry-related major business project in Part II.

Alongside specialised modules in Creative Music Management, Marketing, Live Event Management and New Media Technology, MA Music Industry Entrepreneurship students will develop a major business plan project for presentation to a panel of seed and incubation investors and business angels, curated by Tileyard Studios, seeking to invest in new creative business opportunities and IP.

Students will have access to the new Tileyard Education Centre featuring a professional recording studio, audio-visual tech lab and writing production rooms where they can collaborate with other creative MA students such as Commercial Songwriting and Production.

This industry-centric course also includes regular, large-scale industry networking events, held at Tileyard Studios in partnership with Notting Hill Music and sponsors, an unrivalled masterclass series, a one-to-one electronic mentoring program, work-based learning projects and access to the annual calendar of industry-centric events held on site at Tileyard Studios.

MA Music Industry Management & Promotion is designed to facilitate the commercial exploitation of music related activities and is suitable both for aspiring music business people and for music creators who wish to manage their own careers. It provides an opportunity to study the music business at postgraduate level and to get real hands-on experience of working within the industry. Students will combine their academic studies with industrial experience, including activities at the Factory 251 venue in Manchester, providing contact with significant industry figures connected with this culturally important company.

INDUSTRY LINKS

The University has established good links with theatres and arts organisations across the North West including the New Continental in Preston, the Nuffield Theatre in Lancaster, hÅb in Manchester, the Blue Coat Gallery in Liverpool, and LANWest as well as other arts venues in the region. The School has in the past hosted a number of visiting artists and companies of national and international standing.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT

All practical classes are delivered in the Media Factory which houses three fully equipped theatres as well as sound recording studios, film and photography studios and a range of music rehearsal rooms and seminar spaces. Lectures take place in purpose built suites which are equipped with digital projection facilities. The programme is taught by professional artists and theatre practitioners who are established leaders in their own field.

It is intrinsic to the course to engage in "real world", professional domain, industrial projects. Some of these activities are initiated by the course tutors however, as part of the curriculum, students are encouraged to identify and develop their own projects that resonate with their individual professional aspirations and career goals. Such activities provide exposure to people and organisations outside the university, hence providing the opportunity to develop extensive networks of contacts and professional relationships that may prove useful on completion of the course.

On this course you will study current practice in the music industry, both in the recording industry and in media and live events. You will consider different business models within the industry and look at the way creative products are marketed and promoted. You will engage with the key issue being confronted by the industry; the impact of new technology and the development of the digital marketplace. You will undertake research into the challenges and opportunities that have arisen as a result of rapid technological change in the creative industries.

The course will also give you the opportunity to engage with music industry practice at a professional level and in industrial context. Working on and contributing to field based commercial projects under the direction of an experienced industrial practitioner will enable you to gain hands on experience of a range of Music Industry activities and develop your practical and interpersonal skills. It will also provide a vantage point for in depth reflection on Music Industry practices and a chance to develop your own commercial, professional and industrial strategies.

One of the significant distinct advantages that distinguishes this course from others is the supported engagement in real world professional activities. Shipping is a key link in the global supply chain and accounts for over 95 per cent of all imports and exports. With the growing demand of a global population, levels of international trade have dramatically increased over the last four decades. In the UK alone, this translates to a contribution of around £31 billion for the UK economy and the maritime industry is responsible for one in every 50 jobs. With the world shipping fleet growing at just under 4 per cent per year and anticipated annual growth in seaborne trade demand currently sitting at 3-4 per cent, opportunities in this industry continue to be as diverse and numerous as the cargo it carries.

The programme -

This interdisciplinary course combines traditional MBA content with elements that are unique to the world of shipping and maritime business. Students study all aspects of the maritime industry, exploring the global business environment and developing a greater understanding of the complex interactions between shipping companies, port authorities, businesses and governments.

Business modules cover a range of topics including advanced strategic planning, international marketing and scalable project management methodologies. Students will then apply this newly gained knowledge to a group consultancy project, working in teams to solve real workplace issues.
Maritime units look at global supply chain and logistics management, using this as a context from which to explore fundamental principles of international trade; investment risk; finance and maritime law.

Students will also enhance their research and analytical skills on specialist research units. These units prepare students for a major research project, where they will carry out original research into a specific area of the maritime industry. This project is a good opportunity to specialise knowledge, with many graduates using their research as a springboard for future careers.

The Oxford International Centre for Publishing Studies is one of the leading centres for publishing education in the world. Our staff and students contribute to a vibrant research environment that is interdisciplinary in emphasis and international in scope. We focus on areas such as book consumption and the life cycle of books, book trade and publishing history (especially 18th-21st centuries), museum publishing, serials publications, pedagogy and publishing education, and the future of the industry. Members of staff have published award-winning monographs, key pedagogical textbooks, and a range of scholarly articles and edited collections.

Students pursuing doctoral studies with us are investigating such topics as girl’s magazines in the cultural and consumer marketplace, the future of university libraries, German publishing in the First World War, and marketing strategies for children’s literature in the Middle East. We also supervise students for the PhD by Publication. Most of our research students are based in Oxford, but a number work on their studies from a distance with regular contact in person and by email.

The programme -

With increasing competition in the retail sector, fashion merchandisers play a vital role in transforming ordinary store environments into exciting retail experiences. Students studying on Southampton Solent’s unique fashion merchandise management programme will undertake in-depth study of visual merchandising, retail design and fashion buying – delving into the psychological and cultural factors that influence consumer spending.

The curriculum also covers technical innovation and the place of technology in the modern retail environment. These contemporary innovations are examined alongside retail design, visual merchandising, in-store branding and the benefits of customer interaction.

Students can get involved in retail activities at Re:So, Solent’s student-run high-street store. Re:So stocks a range of fashion and craft products produced by our creative students, making it the ideal place to get hands-on visual merchandising experience. The store’s upper floor ‘learning zone’ has previously hosted guest speakers from the fashion industry, workshops, photo-shoots and exhibitions – all with an emphasis on developing student retail, enterprise and employability skills.

The course concludes with a final master’s project. This is a chance for students to specialise in an area that suits their unique career ambitions, applying the skills that they have learnt throughout the course. The programme -

Built on a successful and popular undergraduate programme, this high-level master’s degree helps to prepare students for a career in the sports industry by delivering hands-on professional skills and adopting an interdisciplinary approach to coaching.

During the course, students will explore key areas such as talent identification, long-term athlete development, performance analysis, strength and conditioning, peak performance, technical and tactical development, marginal gains, and injury prevention and management.

To complement their studies, students are expected to undertake work placements relevant to the course within professional sport and exercise organisations. Working at all levels, from elite athletes to schools or rehabilitation patients, students will gain valuable ‘real-world’ experience working alongside leading experts. Work placements are expected to have been organised prior to joining the course; if students have been unable to organise a placement, the University will support them in finding a suitable opportunity.

Students have full access to the University’s leading, fully-equipped sports science facilities, which boast a BASES-accredited physiology laboratory, as well as biomechanics, health and exercise, and psychology laboratories. Many of these facilities are regularly used by professional athletes, including players from Southampton FC.

Past students have benefitted from a guest speaker programme which has featured lectures from professionals from the highest level of a variety of sports, who have shared their advice, knowledge and experience of the industry.

The course team has strong industry links and the University is a partner of Southampton FC. The University also works with other top sports organisations, including Reed’s High Performance Academy, British Swimming, Hampshire Rugby, Crystal Palace FC, London Irish RFC and GB Wheelchair Rugby.

Course Content

Technical Development in Sport: On this unit you will critically analyse coaching methods and how skill is acquired, building your understanding and use of technology for developing, monitoring and testing athletic performance.

Psycho-Social Development in Sport: The aim of this unit is to analyse the theories underpinning talent identification and long-term athlete development, and to examine the psycho-social factors affecting performance throughout an athlete’s career.

Physical Preparation in Sport and Exercise: This unit examines the science behind effective training, injury prevention and rehabilitation in a practical setting. You will focus on physical and mental loading, and on the key fitness components of strength, speed, endurance and flexibility.

Tactical Development in Sport: This unit focuses on performance analysis techniques, providing practical opportunities to collect, assimilate and analyse tactical, technical and time motion information, with the aim of improving performance.

Marginal Gains for Peak Performance: This unit identifies past, current and future methods of obtaining potential marginal advantage in performance, with a chance to build first-hand experience via off-site learning.

Individual Project: The project provides an opportunity to undertake a sustained, intensive and independent investigation into a topic of your choosing, presenting your work in a peer-reviewed journal format.

The course combines theory-led sessions with practical sessions, working individually and in groups in both the laboratory and the field. On all units you’ll work with real-life clients, in a placement either organised yourself or by members of the course team.

Work experience -

Prior to starting the course you’ll be expected to have a placement organised that will last throughout your studies; this can be in more than one organisation if required. The placement should be in a role relevant to the course, and might include (but not limited to) coach, sport scientist, performance analyst, strength and conditioning coach, exercise physiologist, biomechanist, laboratory technician, etc.

If you’ve been unable to organise a placement, the course team will support you in finding a placement, potentially with university partners Southampton FC or a range of other top sports organisations, including Reed’s High Performance Academy, British Swimming, Hampshire Rugby, Crystal Palace FC, London Irish RFC, GB Wheelchair Rugby and more.

With the growing demand of a global population, levels of international trade have dramatically increased over the last four decades. In the UK alone, this translates to a contribution of around £31 billion for the UK economy and the maritime industry is responsible for one in every 50 jobs. With the world shipping fleet growing at just under four per cent per year and anticipated annual growth in seaborne trade demand currently sitting at three-four per cent, the employment opportunities within the maritime sector look set to expand.

The programme -

This stimulating and intellectually challenging course helps to provide students with the skills and knowledge required to operate successfully within the international maritime industry.

The course has a strong business focus and explores the complex factors involved in the management of ships and shipping operations worldwide. Students will also reflect on the key aspects of maritime law, operations and risk management techniques and look at the impact of international trade on management strategies in the industry.

An important element of the course is the accreditation by the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers (ICS). Depending on their chosen pathway, students on this master’s programme may be exempt from some of the Institute’s professional exams. The course is also validated by the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport (CILT).

Provide a 1000-word personal statement outlining your reasons for applying, and how your previous experience is relevant to the programme
Be prepared to attend an interview with the Postgraduate Admissions Panel
