MSc Marketing with Brand Management

The MSc Marketing with Brand Management is a specialist, 12-month full-time taught postgraduate course. This course provides a stronger focus on the specifics of developing and using brands and branding in the marketing context. All students will register for the MSc Course in Marketing in the first instance and be given the opportunity to change degree pathway at the end of the first semester.
The course is modular, so the credits awarded at the end of each assessed module can be accumulated towards a postgraduate qualification. Students of Marketing with Brand Management study three core topics in the Autumn Semester before deciding on their final course of study. Core modules will introduce you to a range of analytical methods, ensuring you develop a solid foundation in the essential skills for consumer analytics and marketing strategy.

You’ll learn how to analyse geographic data using GIS software and understand the application of this in retail modelling, to evaluate new markets and locations. You’ll study predictive analytics, big data and consumer analytics, business analytics and decision science, and learn how to communicate results through data visualisations.

Alongside this, you’ll learn how to deploy data to inform decisions about marketing strategy. Marketing modules include marketing strategy, consumer behavior and direct, digital and interactive marketing. You’ll also deliver your own data-driven marketing research project for a company.

Optional modules allow you to further your knowledge in a related area of interest, either corporate social responsibility, internal communications and managing change, or applied population and demographic analysis.

By the end of the course, you’ll submit an independent project. You can either research a topic in-depth and submit a dissertation, or gain practical experience through a consultancy project working with an external organisation.

It explores the principles, theoretical concepts and practice of marketing within the context of business and management and will focus on developing academic and applied skills in Marketing including advertising, brand management and loyalty, customer service, public relations and market research.

The programme will also develop students’ knowledge and skills across a broader range of business and management subjects, including organisations, their management and the changing external environment in which they operate and develop students’ ability to take a strategic overview of business and organisational issues.

An important objective is to provide relevant analytical training in the latest strategic, managerial and industrial developments in Marketing both the public and private sectors. We look at marketing at local, national and global levels developing skills in strategic analysis, problem-solving and decision making.

Relationship Marketing

Programme structure

The programme has a duration of 2 years and consists of 4 semesters.

1st semester: Prerequisite courses

In the first semester the students will get an advanced insight into the theories of social sciences that are crucial for the understanding, definition and solution of marketing problems. This semester consists of 4 courses.

The Marketing Research course gives the student a set of tools and models that are essential for the design and evaluation of empirical studies that can support decisions in the marketing policy areas. The course will cover major research tasks and methods including the construction of questionnaires, scale development, observational methods, response models and choice models.

The second theoratical course in Marketing Theory enables students to understand developments and perspectives within the marketing discipline, and to identify marketing concepts and theories relevant for the analysis and solution of marketing problems at hand. Also, the course relates to ethical issues and to the interests of different stakeholders.

The Customer Value and Innovation course provides students with an in-depth understanding of the challenges, mechanisms and approaches for facilitating value creation and innovation activities. This includes the strategies, structures, processes, and the kind of culture that enhances the ability of firms to develop innovative value propositions and facilitate customers’ value creation processes.

To cover the fundamentals of human behaviour in economic contexts, from a social cognition perspective as well as from a judgment and decision-making perspective a course in Economic Psychology will be taught. This course applies fundamental theories and methods to key areas in marketing, including consumer and industrial buyer behaviour, marketing management, pricing, communication, innovation, and relationship marketing.

2nd semester: Specialisation courses

The second semester comprises the following four compulsory specialisation courses.

The role of communication, and how the integration of several communication tools may support the achievement of the overall goal of the firm’s communication strategy will be covered in a course named Marketing Communication.

Pricing Strategy course provides the student with an introduction to the firm’s pricing problem and provides practical techniques in terms of understanding price setting in the context of the firm’s customers, costs and competition. 

The Marketing Channels and Brand Relationships course enables students to analyse and evaluate a company’s position from a marketing channel and network perspective, and to build brand relationships in different types of markets.

Lastly, the semester ends by focusing on marketing management from a strategic perspective, combining and linking all policy areas to decision-making at top management level with the course in Marketing Management and Strategy.

3rd semester: Electives or study abroad

In the third semester you can choose elective courses within your areas of interest. The courses can either be taken at Aarhus BSS during the semester, at the Summer University or at one of our more than 300 partner universities abroad. You can also participate in internship programmes either in Denmark or abroad.

4th semester: Final thesis

The fourth semester is devoted to the master's thesis. You may choose the topic of the thesis freely and get a chance to concentrate on and specialize in a specific field of interest. The thesis may be written in collaboration with another student or it may be the result of your individual effort. When the thesis has been submitted it is defended before the academic advisor as well as an external examiner.

Teaching

As a research active university, international level research findings by Brunel Business School tutors are regularly used in lectures. Tutors on this programme are leaders in the field of management and active researchers within one of the six centres of research within the School.

Modes of Study

1-year full-time in September: The taught element of the course (September to April) includes eight modules; delivery will be by a combination of lectures, seminars and tutorials/group work. A further four months (May to September) is spent undertaking the dissertation.

1-year full-time in January: The taught element of the programme includes 8 modules which are delivered in two terms (four in January to April, and four in September to December); delivery will be by a combination of lectures, seminars and tutorials/group work. The dissertation is undertaken May to August, and then can be completed January to March after the second teaching term.

Assessment

Modules are typically assessed by individual assessment and an examination in May.

Teaching methods include lectures and informal small study groups.

Coursework and examinations place considerable stress on the ability to think and reason critically, but constructively.

The dissertation (12,000 words) is the capstone demonstration of these skills, requiring students to conceive, justify, design and execute a major project.

Individual and/or group presentations using laptops, PCs and digital projectors.

The first two semesters are spent following a programme of lectures and tutorials, which are continually assessed through written assignments. The MSc in Marketing will provide you with the skills to be an effective leader in a dynamic global marketplace, developing your understanding of the theory and practice of marketing.

Businesses today face unprecedented change. Increased competition in both domestic and global markets, together with higher expectations and tougher demands from consumers, require more sophisticated marketing. This degree will provide you with the knowledge and practical understanding of contemporary marketing to allow you to deal with these changes, including digital media, marketing research methods and environmental sustainability.

You will consider marketing across a range of business contexts including consumer, industrial, service, profit and not-for-profit sectors, as well as studying consumers, supply chains, branding and loyalty in local and global contexts. The course will provide a stimulating and intellectually demanding environment, in which you will engage with the academic literature, case studies, business projects and your peers, whilst reflecting on international marketing issues. You will have opportunities to learn about industry practice and emerging trends in sectors such as the creative industries and marketing for tourism and places.

The course will equip you with the ability to critically evaluate and apply new marketing concepts and practices. You will have the opportunity to develop your practical transferable skills including the ability to conduct independent research, problem solving, verbal and written communication, presenting and planning.
