This course is an academic and clinical programme leading to the award of either an MSc in Implantology or Postgraduate Diploma in Implantology depending on which route students take. In this programme, students treat patients provided for them under expert supervision. Students have the opportunity to participate in the full spectrum of contemporary implant practice where all forms of bone and soft-tissue grafting are undertaken.

The course offers knowledge and expertise in the science and practice of implantology, from theoretical science through restorative treatment planning to clinical practice in the direct management of patients requiring fixed and removable implant-retained prostheses.

The course offers you the opportunity to explore and analyse existing and developing theories and concepts underpinning the field of implantology, and it can facilitate professional and personal growth through a wide range of educational and direct clinical experiences.

Teaching

A diverse range of teaching and learning styles are used throughout the MSc/PGdip in Implantology. You will attend lectures, and participate in seminars, tutorials, and a clinical attachment. You will also be taught by visiting experts in the field.

For the MSc, all taught modules are compulsory and you will also undertake a laboratory-based or clinical research project and independent study to enable you to complete your dissertation.

Support

All modules make extensive use of Cardiff University’s Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), Learning Central, on which you will find course materials and links to related materials. You will be supervised when undertaking your dissertation, and your supervisor will schedule regular meetings to discuss progress, provide advice and guidance, and give written feedback on a draft.

Opportunities to reflect on abilities and performance are made available through the Learning Central ‘Personal Development Planning’ module and through scheduled meetings with personal tutors.

Our MSc Dental Implantology (Dental Specialties) course gives dental practitioners the knowledge and skills needed to replace missing teeth and support oral tissues with dental implants.

This course is ideal for dentists with a range of experience, from those new to the discipline to those with considerable implant exposure.

You will develop the requisite knowledge and skills to undertake implant surgery and prosthodontic reconstruction with predictable long-term success while studying a comprehensive range of course units.

You will complete a five-day foundation course at Manchester Dental Education Centre (MANDEC) in July. This ensures that you possess foundation knowledge before starting the MSc in September.

During the MSc, you will complete five cases and go on surgical placements where you will receive one-to-one mentoring from an experienced implant surgeon.

You will also attend a two-day cadaver course run by the Royal College of Surgeons and local consultants, and travel to an implant company teaching centre in Sweden for two days to receive teaching from well-established international contributors. You will continue to attend several hands-on courses at MANDEC.

Teaching and learning

You will complete a five-day foundation course at Manchester Dental Education Centre (MANDEC) in July. This ensures that you possess foundation knowledge before starting the MSc in September.

Learning on the MSc is via observation, seminars and hands-on experience, with contributors from the clinical specialities of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and Restorative Dentistry so you can observe surgical and restorative stages.

The course is supported by a number of consultants, specialists and experienced general implantologists and regular observation sessions are organised.

You will complete five cases and go on surgical placements where you will receive one-to-one mentoring from an experienced implant surgeon.

You will also attend a two-day cadaver course run by the Royal College of Surgeons and local consultants, and travel to an implant company teaching centre in Sweden for two days to receive teaching from well-established international contributors. You will continue to attend several hands-on courses at MANDEC.

In Year 1, you are required to attend lectures and clinical attachments. At the start of the new term in September you will be required to learn at the University for three days a week until the last week of October. You will then be required to learn at the University on a Monday and Tuesday on (mostly) a weekly basis.

In Year 2, you are required to attend lectures and clinical attachments on a fortnightly basis. Lectures take place at the University itself, while clinical attachments take place at private clinics off campus.

Coursework and assessment

Assessment is via written exams, essays, case presentations and viva voce.

The PGCert, PGDip and MSc courses run in succession. The PGCert offers a foundation in implantology, and the PGDip builds on this, offering a diverse range of contemporary experiences and techniques.

A research dissertation is required for the MSc qualification, many of which are published in international peer-reviewed journals.

Unit assessment methods include:

  • Research Methods: two tutor-marked assignments and participation in specified online group activities;
  • Biostatistics: two tutor-marked assignments;
  • Dissertation: an independent research project with a written report of 10,000-15,000 words.

Course unit details

There are four components to the course:

Research Methods unit: Training in skills related to the design, execution and interpretation of clinical and clinically related research.

Biostatistics unit:  Training in skills in data collection, simple analysis and interpretation of clinical and clinically related research.

Specialist Clinical units:  Gain an understanding of the scientific basis of implantology, with particular emphasis on current theories relevant to the diagnosis, treatment planning and clinical management of adult patients.

  • Implant Treatment Planning (15 credits)

Completion of the first year provides the 60 credits needed for the Dental Implantology PGCert.

Year 2 course content

  • Advanced Implant Surgical and Restorative Techniques (15 credits)
  • Research Methods and Biostatistics (15 credits each)

Completion of Year 1 plus Research Methods and Advanced Implant Sciences provides the 120 credits needed for the Dental Implantology PGDip.

  • Research project and dissertation (60 credits) : For MSc students only. You will have a supervisor who will discuss the choice of research project and give advice and guidance throughout. Dissertation areas include the writing of a systematic review in any field of implant dentistry or lab-based research projects.

Completion of Years 1 and 2 provide the 180 credits needed for the Dental Implantology MSc.

Implantology is a complex subject that in the last decade has become a vital part of mainstream dentistry. With the increasing demand from patients, more dentists need to pursue continued study to equip themselves with the necessary skills and competence to tackle a range of different cases.

We have partnered with the University of Portsmouth to bring you the Certificate in Implantology, a 6-month programme designed to give dentists the confidence to start placing implants and ultimately, improve their earning potential.

Many of these sessions will be within the School of Dentistry on the main UCLan Preston campus, though some sessions will be timetabled in the adjacent UCLan Dental Clinic, where you will observe, assist and ultimately lead in clinical treatment. To accompany the study days, much of the course content, including lecture notes, PowerPoint slides, and assignments will be delivered to you via the University’s Blackboard Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), allowing you to both prepare work for study days and undertake additional work independently from your home location.

Work in the early part of the course will comprise lectures, presentations and practical sessions in our state-of-the-art phantom head facility. As you move through the course you will progress to working on live patients under close supervision within the UCLan Dental Clinic. Here skills will be developed and assessed through Direct Observations of Procedural Skills (DOPS). The academic underpinning that supports this discipline will be developed though lectures, presentations, directed reading and case-based discussions, which you and others in the group will be expected to prepare and lead. Group sizes are generally small (typically 10 per cohort) leading to an informal and supportive learning environment where you can ensure that your own learning needs are being met.

This programme is intended for dental practitioners wishing to develop their theoretical knowledge and practical clinical experience in the treatment planning, surgical placement, restoration and maintenance of dental implants. The programme has been designed to allow you to gain experience of the use of dental implants in prosthodontic treatment within a supervised environment. Knowledge is developed using distance learning modules and study days. You will also have the opportunity to carry out a research project or literature review and prepare a dissertation.

We aim to produce caring, knowledgeable and skilful practitioners, who are competent in the provision of the surgical and restorative dental aspects of dental implant treatment, within the limits of the individual clinician.

Programme structure

This modular programme is divided in to three sections - certificate, diploma and MSc levels. All students are admitted to the MSc in the first instance and can choose to exit the programme at certificate or diploma level.

Year One
Five theoretical and practical modules are delivered over a minimum of six study days during the year, as well as through distance-learning material and self-directed study. You will also attend clinical practice placements at the Bristol Dental Hospital, Bristol Royal Infirmary and the Dental Implant Clinic in Bath. During the clinical practice placements you will diagnose, plan treatment and carry out implant placement under supervision in pre-selected patients who are provided for you. After completing year one, candidates can exit the programme at certificate level or carry on to year two.

Year Two
A further five modules are delivered over a minimum of six study days, through distance-learning material, self-directed work and work-based study. In addition, you will again attend clinical practice placements. After successfully completing years one and two, candidates may exit the programme with a Postgraduate Diploma in Dental Implantology.

Year Three
After a further year, an MSc will be awarded on the successful completion of a dissertation.

Intensive face-to-face training blocks

Delivered primarily online, the course also provides 18 days of intensive teaching and practical training at Rangoonwala College of Dental Sciences and Research Centre, Pune, India. Under expert supervision, these blocks are an invaluable way to consolidate learning and progress to the final year.

Teaching

You will be taught mostly online through King's E-learning and Teaching Service (KEATS) which provides information, interactive questions, assignments, use of bibliographic databases and reading material. This gives you the freedom to study without interrupting your work and personal life, and to put your skills directly into practice. Our students participate in online tutorials and discussion groups, interacting with expert tutors and their fellow students. Face-to-face lectures and hands-on training take place in blocks in the first two years. Students are required to undertake and submit 4 cases of clinical work in their place of work. 

Course format and assessment

60% per cent of each module will be assessed through exams and 40% through in-course assessment, with the exception of the Clinical Practice module, which is assessed entirely through coursework, and the Maxillofacial Prosthetic Rehabilitation Research Report module which is assessed on a dissertation.

Our three-year MSc (Clin) Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery course enables dentists to train in the specialty concerned with the diagnosis and management of diseases, injuries and defects affecting the mouth, jaws, face and neck.

All units are based on the speciality of oral surgery, but within the wider context of maxillofacial surgery. You will undertake minor oral surgery under supervision, carried out under local anaesthesia, conscious sedation and general anaesthesia. You will also attend theatre to assist and observe major surgery and attend consultation clinics, trauma clinics, ward rounds and carry out ward duties.

The clinical component of the course consists of units covering surgical basic sciences, reflective oral surgery practices, dental tissues, bone disease and injury, soft tissues, and salivary tissue, pain and the temporomandibular joint.

You will attend weekly interactive seminars led by senior staff and invited guest speakers. Some of these have actor patients present to allow you to rehearse your clinical skills.

If you study the full three-year MSc, you will also attend external teaching events such as residential blocks for basic science applied to surgery at the Royal College of Surgeons of England.

You will become eligible to sit the Royal College of Surgeons examinations for Membership in Oral Surgery on completion of this MSc course.

Aims

The course aims to:

  • provide dental practitioners with the knowledge and skills to undertake oral surgery in the context of wider knowledge of oral and maxillofacial surgery;
  • provide you with the appropriate knowledge, understanding, intellectual skills, practical skills and attitude to practice oral surgery in selected cases;
  • enable you to carry out critical evaluation, problem solving and use sound judgement for clinical problems;
  • give you the knowledge to criticalyl understand the issues involved in the scientific basis of oral and maxillofacial surgery;
  • ensure you are competent in the design and interpretation of original clinical research at the forefront of current dental research (including data collection and statistical analysis using appropriate computer software);

Our one-year MSc Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery course is designed for dentists who wish to advance their knowledge of this clinical specialty at postgraduate level.

This specialty is concerned with the diagnosis and management of diseases, injuries and defects affecting the mouth, jaws, face and neck.

The specialist clinical component of the course will give you an understanding of the scientific basis of oral and maxillofacial surgery, with particular emphasis on current theories relevant to the diagnosis, treatment planning and clinical management of patients. The course will also emphasise the evidence base supporting clinical surgical practice.

You will observe a wide range of surgery, including facial trauma, implant and reconstructive, cancer and reconstructive, salivary gland and orthognathic surgery, as well as participating in dentoalveolar surgery.

The course also covers the design, data collection, and simple analysis and interpretation of clinical research projects, and culminates in the MSc dissertation. You will learn how to identify, formulate and implement a specific research project in line with the research themes of pain and anxiety control, surgical implantology, or oral cancer and health services research.

Aims

The course aims to provide dental practitioners with the knowledge and skills to undertake minor oral surgery in the context of a wider knowledge of oral and maxillofacial surgery.

Teaching and learning

Our teaching and learning methods are designed to encourage you to take responsibility for your own learning and to integrate work with formal educational activities.

We will provide the core text book for the course. This book, Master Dentistry Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Radiology, Pathology and Oral Medicine (ISBN 0443061920), has been authored by University staff Coulthard, Horner, Sloan and Theaker.

Coursework and assessment

Assessment is by essay and SBAs throughout the course and related to the taught units. You will also maintain a clinical surgical logbook and undertake a clinical competency test. There is also an oral examination.

The Dublin Dental University Hospital provides a clinical doctorate programme those results in the award of a Doctorate in Dental Surgery (D.Ch.Dent.) from Trinity College Dublin. There are six individual strands, five of which are currently available to applicants:

The three year clinical training programme is recognised as meeting the entry criteria for the speciality FFD examinations held by the Faculty of Dentistry, Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.

It is the intention of the courses to develop clinical skills in the light of currently available scientific knowledge. Students are required to attend a course of study and to pass written and clinical examinations throughout the course. There is a significant academic component including design and completion of a research project with the submission of a thesis at Doctorate level at the end of the third year. The thesis will be the subject of a viva voce examination.

The first year of the programme is designed to provide a background in relevant sciences and to develop basic skills within the chosen speciality. The emphasis during the 2nd and 3rd years is on the development of high levels of diagnostic ability, treatment planning, operative skills and patient management.

This programme prepares the student for the clinical practice of prosthodontics at specialist level and provides the basis for continuing professional development after completion of the programme. Students will thoroughly explore the prosthodontic literature and become competent in the clinical/laboratory aspects of fixed and removable prosthodontics, including dental implantology. Students will learn how to diagnose, plan and execute high quality prosthodontic treatment for a range of patients. They will have the opportunity to use state-of-the-art materials and equipment, including CAD-CAM restorations, computer-aided implant placement and fully adjustable articulators. The course explores the use of high strength ceramics and high-aesthetic situations. The Prosthodontic programme works closely with periodontics, especially in treatment planning for implant patients. In addition, students attend multidisciplinary clinics for the treatment of dental trauma, developmental disorders (including hypodontia) and cancer surgery defects.

The aim of the programme is to enable dentists to bring implant dentistry into their everyday practice. Graduates of the programme will be equipped with the skills necessary for dental implant case selection and planning, surgery and restoration of straighforward implant cases. This is the foundation of implant treatment in general dental practice. The programme is designed for students to embark on implant treatment in their own practices during the course of the programme.
