About the MPA

The two-year Master of Public Administration (MPA) programme is ideal for current and future government advisers, policy-makers and policy analysts from around the world. Our training is both wide-ranging and in-depth and includes, among other areas, economics and econometrics, political science, international development and welfare policy. Around 80 per cent of our students come from overseas, creating a truly international network of peers that endures long after graduation.

You will choose a policy stream from a range of five in the second year, allowing you to specialise in a particular area according to your interests and career plans.

In the second year of the programme, you will undertake a capstone project where you work in a group of three to five to research, analyse and make recommendations to resolve a genuine policy problem for a real-life client organisation.

You will also benefit from a range of Skills Development Seminars which will complement the formal teaching and learning of the programme. In addition, regular Policy in Practice Seminars bring distinguished professionals to LSE to share their experiences and to help you connect your classroom learning to the real world.

The MPA produces graduates who make far-reaching and significant contributions in the policy arena in the public and private sectors, and in non-governmental organisations including careers in impact investing, policy monitoring and evaluation, policy design, social impact investing, political transparency, financial regulation and economic analysis.

MPA Dual Degree

During their first year, MPA students can apply to spend their second year studying abroad at one of our partner schools, joining one of the following programmes:

◾ the MPP at Sciences Po, Paris
◾ the MPP at the Hertie School of Governance, Berlin

More about this course

MSc Public Health is a unique social science based multi-disciplinary course that focuses on the wider determinants of health and wellbeing. It is based on the view that public health strategies reach far beyond the health care system.

It provides a comprehensive coverage of the twenty-first century complexities of both national and international public health.

The course aims to develop critical understanding of the impact of social determinants of health on populations and the range of political, social, economic, environmental and health interventions that might improve population health.

It also evaluates key principles and concepts that underpin public health developments and interprets evidence crucial for decision-making and problem-solving in public health policy and practice. Ethical dimensions of public health are also a key consideration.

You are assessed via a variety of methods, including seminar papers, presentations, essays, coursework reports, mini projects, case studies, unseen examination and a final dissertation.

After the course

Completion of the course provides a wide career pathway in population health. Graduates have gone on to positions within NHS organisations, community organisations, government agencies, local authorities, health promotion agencies, human rights agencies, health sectors abroad, international health institutions, academia, the business and voluntary sectors. Some graduates undertake advanced research studies.

Moving to one campus

Between 2016 and 2020 we're investing £125 million in the London Metropolitan University campus, moving all of our activity to our current Holloway campus in Islington, north London. This will mean the teaching location of some courses will change over time.

This programme is designed for individuals who wish to improve their impact and effectiveness in leading and managing individuals, teams, and organisations within the sport business industry. Students will immerse themselves in the business of sport, enhancing their leadership capacity and business acumen in relation to the complex and rapidly emerging global sport business environment.

The programme recognises that contemporary leadership and management are multifaceted and there is a need to draw upon numerous perspectives to have an impact in the current international sport business environment. This course is designed to introduce and bring together theories, styles and philosophies of leadership, provide an extensive understanding of business practices, and their practical application in the context of sport.

Developmental themes embedded within the programme relate to team work, sustainability, critical reflection, management development and leadership construction. Programme Structure

To complete the MSc Sport Leadership, students must complete 8 x 15 credit modules. Students must choose 1 of the 3 optional modules in semester 2. All students must complete a Dissertation worth 60 credits. Students will pick a second subject from the list of nominated second subject modules offered by the other Loughborough University in London Institutes in the first semester.

ASSESSMENT

Modules are assessed by a combination of written assignments, group exercises, presentations and time constrained assignments. Subject to your choices, there may also be exams.

This programme draws together teaching from a wide range of disciplines, investigating the application of computational technologies to the arts, humanities and cultural heritage. We study the impact of these techniques on cultural heritage, museums, libraries, archives and digital culture while developing skills that employers and students tell us are needed.

Degree information

Our students develop an advanced understanding of digital resources, techniques and computational methods relevant to research and practice in the humanities and cultural heritage sectors; these include programming, XML, databases, internet technologies, image capture and digitisation. They receive both practical and theoretical training to develop a unique and critical skill set suitable for many types of employment or advanced study.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of five core modules (15 credits each), three optional modules (15 credits each), a research dissertation (60 credits) and a work placement. All MA/MSc students undertake an independent research project in the form of a 12,000-word dissertation.

Teaching and learning

Business, ethics and society

Business, ethics and society investigates and activates the role of business as ethical and social leaders. The specialisation equips students with an understanding of the theoretical foundations and practical issues of internal and external ethical and societal forces that businesses face, respond to and activate. Business, ethics and society especially develops students' critical engagement and leadership capabilities to manage diversity, inclusiveness, and work and life. These capacities are developed within a strong context of ethics and corporate responsibility, and the domestic and international environments in that organisations operate. The specialisation prepares students for active managerial roles within organisations in the private, public and not-for-profit sectors.

Commercialisation

Commercialisation is the process or cycle of introducing a new product or production method into the market. The commercialisation process or cycle can be applied in many different contexts, including: art, design, and architecture; arts and humanities; business and economics; education; engineering; information technology; law; medicine, nursing and health sciences; pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences; and science and technology. The specialisation provides a comprehensive business-focused setting to help students develop the necessary business and entrepreneurial acumen and commercialisation knowledge to succeed. Commercialisation especially develops students' new venture finance, patenting, innovation, and wealth pathways skills and knowledge. The specialisation prepares students, particularly facilitated by the commercialisation project, for commercialisation and entrepreneurial roles within organisations in the private, public and not-for-profit sectors.

Information technology

The information technology discipline allows students to build upon the core program with six units dealing with current practices and emerging strategies for the application of information technology in business management. Students are introduced to management of the creation, storage, recall and dissemination of business records within organisation-wide frameworks and they will gain a high-level of understanding of the processes of project management. Units are taught by the Faculty of Information Technology.

Law and responsible business

The fortunes of a business can quickly turn around if it does not pay proper attention to the laws that regulate its organisation and activities. The law provides the framework for all aspects of business from the internal management of business organisations to their relationships with clients, consumers and the public. The units in this specialisation provide students with an understanding of the legal framework within which business operates and the fundamental laws that regulate business activities and transactions, with particular emphasis on how legal and social responsibility considerations should impact business decision-making.

Managing human capital

Managing human capital is the recognition of people as valuable contributors, and the systems and operations for investing in people to enhance their contributions. The specialisation equips students with an understanding of the theoretical foundations and practical issues of managing and developing people within an international context. Managing human capital develops students' strategic and operational people management knowledge and skills, particularly for diverse, inclusive, and productive workplaces. This specialisation prepares students for careers in human resource management, industrial relations, consulting, public sector management, and general people management roles.

Marketing

Marketing is a fun, dynamic, complex activity (and discipline) that focuses on providing value to both organisations and consumers. Very simply, marketing is about matching what an organisation has (or can do) with someone who wants it. Marketing is about selling, it is about advertising, but it also so much more. Project management

A project is a collection of activities and resources undertaken to achieve planned objectives, which could be defined in terms of time, quality and cost or economic outcomes. Project management is the process of ensuring defined goals are achieved in relation to a project. This specialisation provides graduates with the knowledge, technology and processes employed in project management that allow them to pursue such professional roles in industry and government. Quantitative business analysis

Students will be provided with advanced quantitative skills required to carry out statistical analysis in business, economics and finance. They will also develop skills to report on the findings of their quantitative analysis.

Risk management

Risk is defined by AS/NZS ISO 31000: 2009 as 'the effect of uncertainty on objectives'. The management of risk is an evolving discipline that builds on current knowledge in a diverse range of activities. The risk management specialisation focuses on operational and financial risk in today's commercial world. It provides extended skills in the strategic and process applications of risk management and prepares for the increasingly complex risk management issues faced in many areas of business and government. It prepares graduates for roles that are required to address business, insurance and financial risk. Moving to one campus

Between 2016 and 2020 we're investing £125 million in the London Metropolitan University campus, moving all of our activity to our current Holloway campus in Islington, north London. This will mean the teaching location of some courses will change over time.

Whether you will be affected will depend on the duration of your course, when you start and your mode of study. The earliest moves affecting new students will be in September 2017. This may mean you begin your course at one location, but over the duration of the course you are relocated to one of our other campuses. Our intention is that no full-time student will change campus more than once during a course of typical duration.

The programme recognises that International events are increasingly important within a globalizing world, reflecting the increasing levels of interconnectedness and levels of social consciousness of the world as a single place Mega sporting and cultural events also have an increased political saliency to a wide variety of governmental and non-governmental actors across the world. In this sense, contemporary sporting and cultural events are significant elements of a globalised politic, ‘influencing and being influenced by politics and foreign policy’. International events are therefore inseparable from politics, international relations and diplomacy (public or cultural). They are also now accepted as an important element in nations’ soft power offensives, to the point that securing a positive impact on the nation’s image (or brand) or international prestige has moved from being a welcome consequence to a significant justification for investing in hosting sports mega-events. This particular emphasis on Cultural Diplomacy and its historical and contemporary application in the public sector, private sector and civil society, provides students with expertise in three distinct academic fields, thus with an academic and practical advantage in the European and Global Arena.

In addition to required coursework, the program includes educational & cultural events, conferences, professional trainings, tours, visits and meetings with foreign officials, which are further incorporated into the curriculum. Students will meet with leading experts working in international organizations, embassies, and academic institutions, and will engage with specialists in the areas of International Relations & Economics, Business, Communication, Politics, Human Rights, Culture, Peace Building, Multilateral Diplomacy, Conflict Resolution, and Development.

The program provides students with practical experience for both academic and professional development, preparing students for careers in diverse fields, such as international relations, the humanities, politics, and culture, foreign policy and international economics. On a practical level, the international environment of the Center for Cultural Diplomacy Studies offers students a unique opportunity to interact with leading experts and academics at a wide variety of international organizations and research centers. Program Curriculum
The program consists of 90 ECTS credits in total and has duration of two trimesters, and a Thesis to be submitted towards the completion of the program. The first trimester of the program is hosted by the University of the West of Scotland in Paisley and the second trimester is hosted by the Institute for Cultural Diplomacy in Berlin. This unique structure of the program provides the students with the advantage of learning in 2 different major European cities and thus the opportunity to gain academic, professional and personal experience from living in different cultures. Furthermore, the program’s structure provides a unique opportunity to benefit from the study environment in both an international non-governmental organization and a traditional public University.

The program follows the conventional university structure of a one year academic program divided into two trimesters, where Students are offered elective courses to accompany mandatory courses, a professional development experience and the final thesis.

Financials
The tuition cost is 9,000 Euros for the full program. The fees cover only the tuition fees, and do not include housing or any other living costs and related expenses.

The Master of Science in Investment Management Program, MSc(IM) was first introduced in 1996 with the part-time study mode. Since its inception, the MSc(IM) program has been widely recognized by finance professionals as a premier academic program.

In 2014, a full-time study mode was launched as an extension of the well-established part-time program, and designed to provide rigorous training for students interested in professional careers in the finance industry.

The full-time curriculum is structured to meet the growing and specialized demands of the industry. It begins with a solid foundation of courses in accounting, economics, quantitative and computing skills, investment analysis and financial derivatives, which form the core subjects in the Chartered Financial Analysts (CFA) and Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA) examinations curriculum. Students can also further build on this broad knowledge base by choosing advanced courses and specialized electives that lead to concentrations in Asset Management or Risk Management.

Program Curriculum

The full-time MSc(IM) program commences in September and starts with six core courses (12 credits) as foundation training, and four required courses (8 credits).

Students can complete all course requirements in two semesters (12 months) for a total of 30 credits and declare one concentration: Asset Management or Risk Management. Centre for Doctoral Training in Intelligent Games and Game Intelligence

The EPSRC Intelligent Games and Games Intelligence (IGGI) Centre for Doctoral Training is a collaboration between the University of York, the University of Essex and Goldsmiths College, University of London. It will train the next generation of researchers, designers, developers and entrepreneurs in digital games.

The Centre is a unique opportunity for students to undertake PhD research in collaboration with our 60 industrial games partners and world-leading academics.

The doctoral programme combines practical skills training with advanced teaching in cutting-edge research topics and the chance to contribute original research to a growing academic area. Students also undertake two industrial placements during the programme, giving first hand industrial experience that will influence their research projects. Graduates will have the skills needed to succeed in a career in games, having also developed strong relationships with the leaders in the UK digital games industry.

Funded by the EPSRC, we have a number of studentships available for October 2016 entry. The studentships cover tuition fees and include an annual stipend of approximately £14,057 at 2105/16 rates (or £16,057 if studying at Goldsmiths with London weighting).
