The demand for trained practitioners in environmental assessment at both the project level (environmental impact assessment (EIA)) and the strategic level (strategic environmental assessment (SEA)), and related environmental management fields continues to grow. To meet this demand, the MSc programme in Environmental Impact Assessment and Management provides an opportunity for specialist study in this area. It will provide you with a thorough, stimulating and practical post-graduate education in EIA and related areas.

We give you a sound knowledge of the process of EIA and related areas, including planning for environmental change and environmental law, before building upon this with more teaching on the appraisal of projects and auditing. The course aims to provide you with an understanding of theories and techniques in environmental assessment and management, in parallel with developing skills in analytical decision-making, design and project management.
The course consists of six core course units, plus one optional course unit which can be chosen from a selection of modules taught within the School of Environment, Education and Development or other related schools across the University. You also undertake a dissertation in an area of your choice to develop your analytical and research skills; engagement with case studies and practice are encouraged as part of data collection.
Part-time students complete the full-time programme over 27 months. The part-time route is not on a day-release basis and there are no evening or weekend course units available. Therefore if you are considering taking a programme on a part-time basis, you should discuss the requirements with the Programme Director first and check the timetable to ensure that you can attend the compulsory classes. You should also seek approval from your employer to have the relevant time off. Timetabling information is normally available from late August from the Programme Administrator and you will have the opportunity to discuss course unit choices during induction week with the Programme Director.
We assess you through the submission of essays, reports and other work (e.g. workshop assignments), both individually and in groups. Some optional course units may involve examinations.
The taught part of the course (120 credits), is assessed by continuous assessment and formal examinations. Continuous assessment includes essays, reports, posters, oral presentations, and a major project.
A 15,000-word dissertation is prepared on an approved topic, which is discussed and chosen at the beginning of the second semester and a suitable supervisor allocated. Initial work focuses upon an overview of he chosen topic, a literature review and the design of the methodology to be adopted. During the latter part of Semester 2 and the summer vacation, you undertake the necessary research and analysis, culminating in the writing of your dissertation.
Graduates of this specialist course are fully equipped to seek employment in environmental consultancies, local authorities, utilities, environmental agencies and environmental non-governmental organisations in both the developed and developing world. We encourage you to interact with potential employers during the course, particularly when undertaking the dissertation.
The MSc EIAM is accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) under their Environment Specialism. It is also accredited by the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI) as a specialist Masters degree and can therefore lead to full RTPI accreditation for students with an undergraduate degree in town planning that is partially recognised by the RTPI.

The MA in Social Policy and Social Development Programme aims to prepare students to develop the necessary core professional and personal competence required to work in the field of social policy and to engage in professional practices in social development. This involves gaining critical knowledge and skills in analysing and appreciating local and global policy issues and the ability to formulate and assess policy options that ensure effective, appropriate and sustainable outcomes, uphold social justice and improve social well-being. To these ends, the programme is designed to bring together theory and practice that enables participants in the programme to meet challenges in social development ethically and imaginatively.
Unlike most other postgraduate programmes in social policy, this MASPSD is designed for those who are either to embark on a career in Social Policy and Social Development or those who are already mid-career practitioners seeking to improve their knowledge about public and non-government sectors specialising in social policy and planning for social development. It is structured to offer rigorous, interdisciplinary and hands-on training across a number of academic, managerial and professional disciplines that prepare participants to transfer knowledge into action to bring about social development, especially through responsible policy analysis, formulation, impact assessment and evaluation.
The programme provides students with a solid foundation in social policy analysis that can be adapted and applied in many fields of human service provision and practice in social development. Graduates are expected to gain the competence necessary to participate effectively in social policy processes, conduct needs assessments, evaluate policy impacts and develop appropriate and relevant policy options that respond responsibly to new challenges in social development.
MA : to be eligible for the award, students are required to take 30 credits (6 Required Subjects including the Integrative Project and 4 Elective Subjects).
PgD : Students who have successfully completed 21 credits (5 Required Subjects and 2 Elective Subjects) can exit that programme with a Postgraduate Diploma.
PgC : Students who have successfully completed 12 credits (2 Required Subjects and 2 Elective Subjects) can exit the programme with a Postgraduate Certificate.
Graduates of this programme may apply for membership of the International Association for Impact Assessment (IAIA).
The Educational Assessment MA investigates the purposes and potential uses of formative and summative assessment and the relationship between the two. The programme provides opportunities to review assessment of learning and for learning, it develops students' understanding of principal concepts in educational testing and encourages critical engagement with policy development in educational assessment.
The programme provides students with the opportunity to develop an in-depth understanding of assessment issues, practices and policies both in the UK and internationally. Our graduates leave with key skills that they are able to apply in a range of workplaces, or they continue to further study at doctoral level.
Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.
The programme consists of one core module (30 credits), and either three optional modules (90 credits) and a dissertation (60 credits), or a 30-credit report plus an additional optional module.

Teaching and learning
Depending on the modules taken, the programme is delivered through face-to-face evening sessions, intensive five-day face-to-face daytime sessions, and/or online. A typical evening face-to-face session consists of two-and-a-half hours of lectures, dialogue, small group discussions, presentations and/or a range of other activities.

The PgDip/MSc programme in Environmental Management with GIS aims to provide an advanced education in Environmental Management, specialising in environmental impact assessment, biodiversity management, pollution monitoring and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The course aims to teach students the principles and practice of environmental management, the contribution of empirical and case study scientific research, and the manipulation and analysis of spatial environmental data.
This course aims to teach how environmental management and data handling tools, such as impact assessment, site conservation planning, environmental management systems, ecological monitoring and GIS are applied in making knowledge based decisions on managing the environment. This is considered in the context of environmental legislative/policy frameworks within which industry, government and voluntary bodies work.

To take this course, you will need access to a computer with a fast internet connection. The course uses the Blackboard learning environment and the modules are delivered using online lectures, including practical and tutorial material. Students and staff interact via email, discussion boards and online chat. You will find that this course is much more flexible than traditional on-campus university courses as you can study using your own computer and the internet, at your own pace, any place and any time (within given timeframes).
Fully online - part-time by distance learning. You do not need to visit Ulster at any stage to successfully complete this course.
The Postgraduate Diploma (PgDip) Environmental Management with GIS and the Master of Science (MSc) Environmental Management with GIS are linked courses. You must successfully complete the PgDip (120 credit points) before transferring to the MSc (a further 60 credit points), i.e.to get the full MSc you complete 180 credit points in total.
The five taught modules which constitute the Postgraduate Diploma are taken over two years (4 semesters). Modules are available on a two year rotational basis so the order in which they are studied is dependent upon when you start the course.
For the MSc an additional two semesters are required to complete the project module i.e. three years in total part-time (6 semesters).
The majority of students on the course are already working in industry or public services and taking the course has helped them to gain promotion and/or change careers as a result of their new skills.
