You will study your chosen specialism at an advanced level, through selecting your optional modules. In the final year you will carry out a research project (dissertation) in one of our laboratories or in your NHS laboratory (if you are an existing practitioner). This will enable you to choose and research a particular topic in-depth. Following the submission of the dissertation there will be an oral presentation and questions.

These modules examine the underpinnings of a modern research-based health service and provide the foundation for the dissertation. Several other cohorts of students also take these modules from a health service background, and inter-professional discussion will be encouraged, so as to ensure that topics are examined from a range of perspectives.

Teaching and Assessment:

Teaching will normally be delivered though formal lectures, more informal seminars, tutorials, workshops, discussions and e-learning packages.

Assessment will be via essays, presentations, seen exams, poster presentations, plus a final dissertation.

The course is delivered by a group of dedicated and experienced professionals, many of whom have come from NHS hospital laboratory experience or dedicated
research institutions.

Graduate careers:

This course will enhance career prospects for graduates of Biomedical Science or other bioscience disciplines, and will enable Health Professions Council (HPC) registered biomedical scientists to increase their opportunities for progression within pathology services. It has been developed in conjunction with local health trusts who support this initiative and contribute to the teaching.
Input from practitioners means that you will benefit from learning the most current debates, concerns, issues and topics in the field of practice. It will assist managers and staff to meet their objectives in relation to agenda for change.

Ultimately the objectives are to produce biomedical scientists that are suitably qualified for entry to postgraduate research programmes leading to PhD or professional doctorates in Biomedical Science, and be able to apply for appropriate employment in hospitals pathology laboratories.

The Biomedical Sciences (Cancer Biology) MSc programme has been devised to provide knowledge of key aspects of this increasingly important disease area.

Develop advanced laboratory research skills to progress your career in the field of toxicology. You will enhance your understanding of the interaction of toxins with molecular targets, target organ toxicity, and the role of the immune system in response to toxins.

You will learn about specific tests utilised in both research and industry, such as toxicological screening programmes used by pharmaceutical and medical companies, and improve your presentation and communication skills by analysing scientific literature and presenting scientific information. You will have access to a variety of research projects which align with the expertise of our staff within the Centre for Biomedical Sciences Research, including neurotoxicity testing using cell culture methods and developing smart bandages for wound care.

You will spend over 200 hours of our course making good use of our biomedical science laboratories, working on specific research projects that are of interest to you and that align with our expertise. We will give you access to Class 2 microbiology facilities, along with cell culture and micro-electric fabrication equipment. With our new biomedical sciences research laboratory (opened in 2013), you will be able to conduct project work in a dedicated research environment and will benefit from an enhanced range of equipment.

This new three-year, part-time, online postgraduate programme leads to the degree of Masters of Science in Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (CMID).

Aimed at junior doctors currently undergoing, or about to undertake, specialty training in an infection discipline, this programme is open to trainees in the UK and worldwide.

This degree will also be attractive to those who have completed their training but wish to fulfill continuing medical education requirements or those who wish obtain a formal qualification in Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases.

The programme is aligned with JRCPTB and RCPath training in infection disciplines: Combined Infection Training and Higher Specialty Training in Infectious Diseases, Medical Microbiology and Medical Virology.

Programme structure

This programme is taught entirely online. The structure of the degree is designed to meet the needs of trainees and specialist practitioners from all over the world.

Courses are offered as five week courses, each worth 10 credits. Courses in Year 1 are compulsory. Year 2 is a mix of compulsory and optional modules.

  • Introduction to Immunology
  • Science and biology of bacteria
  • Science and biology of viruses
  • Science and biology fungi, parasites and prions
  • Laboratory practise in microbiology, virology and serology
  • Anti-infective therapy and resistance

Year 2:

  • Immunopathology
  • Molecular diagnostics of infection
  • Community acquired infections and public health
  • Infection prevention & control
  • HIV infection and other immune-compromised patients
  • Clinical syndromes and infection
  • The returning traveller: Diagnosis, investigation and management of imported infection
  • Bioinformatics and study design in infectious diseases
  • Emerging Infectious Diseases

Year 3:

Postgraduate Professional Development (PPD)

Postgraduate Professional Development (PPD) is aimed at working professionals who want to advance their knowledge through a postgraduate-level course(s), without the time or financial commitment of a full Masters, Postgraduate Diploma or Postgraduate Certificate.

You may take a maximum of 50 credits worth of courses over two years through our PPD scheme. These lead to a University of Edinburgh postgraduate award of academic credit. Alternatively, after one year of taking courses you can choose to transfer your credits and continue on to studying towards a higher award on a Masters, Postgraduate Diploma or Postgraduate Certificate programme. Although PPD courses have various start dates throughout a year you may only start a Masters, Postgraduate Diploma or Postgraduate Certificate programme in the month of September. Any time spent studying PPD will be deducted from the amount of time you will have left to complete a Masters, Postgraduate Diploma or Postgraduate Certificate programme.

Flexible study

The programme also offers the opportunity to take a Postgraduate Certificate (60 credits), either part-time over 9 months or on an intermittent basis over 2 years; or a Postgraduate Diploma (120 credits), either part-time over 21 months or on an intermittent basis over 4 years.

This course is designed to give you the opportunity to study and analyse the theoretical and practical basis of medical microbiology and many of the specialist areas within it. You will gain greater insight into the importance and role of medical microbiology, with an emphasis on cutting edge areas such as molecular diagnostics and genomics, emerging pathogens and antibiotic resistance.

You will study a range of core and option modules that will allow you to tailor studies to your own requirements. You will expand your knowledge of the basic science and analytical techniques relating to medical microbiology and gain an up-to-date understanding of the application of medical microbiology in bioscience/pharmaceutical research, as well as in diagnostic and therapeutic medicine. There will be an emphasis in the course on development of critical analysis skills in assessment of scientific literature and laboratory data. In addition you will have the opportunity to design and execute your own research project. The course team is supported by visiting lecturers who are practising scientists in the field, which helps to ensure that taught material is current and relevant.

As well as gaining knowledge and skills in medical microbiology and other associated subject areas you will develop numerous other skills that are designed to make you competitive in the jobs market. Some students will already be working in healthcare and public health laboratories in the UK and overseas while others will be gaining the skills they need to work as a Biomedical or Clinical Scientist.
