Course Details

In Part I students take modules to the value of 50 credits and a Preliminary Research Report in Sustainable Energy (NE6008) to the value of 10 credits. Part II consists of a Dissertation in Sustainable Energy (NE6009) to the value of 30 credits which is completed over the summer months.

Detailed Entry Requirements

Candidates must have a BE(Hons) or BEng (Hons) Degree or equivalent engineering qualification, with a minimum grade 2H2. However, candidates with equivalent academic qualifications and suitable experience may be accepted subject to the approval of College of Science, Engineering and Food Science. In all cases, the course of study for each candidate must be approved by the Programme Coordinator.
Candidates, for whom English is not their primary language, should possess an IELTS of 6.5 (or TOEFL equivalent) with no less than 6.0 in each individual category.

Candidates from Grandes Écoles Colleges are also eligible to apply if they are studying a cognate discipline in an ENSEA or EFREI Graduate School and are eligible to enter the final year (M2) of their programme.

Assessment

- Postgraduate Diploma in Sustainable Energy -

Students who pass but fail to achieve the requisite grade of 50% across the taught modules and the Preliminary Research Report will be eligible for the award of a Postgraduate Diploma in Sustainable Energy. Candidates passing Part I of the programme who do not wish to proceed to Part II may opt to be conferred with a Postgraduate Diploma in Sustainable Energy.

Two further modules from a wide range including shipping and port operations, lean six sigma, green logistics, and systems analysis are also taken.

Many of the guest speakers on the programme are senior executives with wide experience of logistics and give an insight into current approaches, practices and techniques being applied in the logistics sector.

In addition there is a series of site visits, mainly to distribution centres, which give students the opportunity to see best practice in action and to have useful discussions with professional logistics practitioners.

It is particularly suitable for those who seek to develop an academic career in research. It is also suitable for those seeking a professional career in this area, or for those already established in such a career who wish to extend their skill set and familiarise themselves with the latest themes of research in the areas of international accounting and finance.

The core of the programme is the stream on international accounting which consists of three subjects taken over semesters 1 and 2. These seek to provide students with an international perspective to the study of accounting so that they can develop an understanding of the reasons for national differences; the tendencies towards harmonisation; and the problems of multinational companies. This is done within the context of supporting classes on accounting theory and research methodology.

Medicines management describes a system of processes and behaviours that determines how medicines are used by patients and the NHS. Effective medicines management places the patient as the primary focus of interventions by health care professionals and is a key driver for NHS modernisation in the UK.

The Medway School of Pharmacy's innovative postgraduate distance-learning programme in Medicines Management equips healthcare professionals with the skills and knowledge to contribute effectively to medicines management services and to individual drug therapy decisions in primary and secondary care.

The programme is delivered by flexible learning and is structured to enable the student to incorporate learning directly into the workplace. The material provided for self-study is designed for use by all health professionals involved in medicines management and reflects the most recent evidence and practice.

There are two main pathways to the qualification of MSc Medicines Management. Students can either take the PGCert Independent/Supplementary Prescribing and then continue with compulsory and optional courses reach Diploma level or they can complete optional and compulsory courses to reach achieve both Certificate and Diploma. English Examinations
The Management English course prepares students for the IELTS test, and students can sit this test in Sheffield. Students wishing to enrol for a course of academic study in Sheffield (a Masters degree, for example) will be entered for the University of Sheffield English Proficiency Test, which is accepted as equivalent to the IELTS test by both Sheffield University and Sheffield Hallam University.

Commercial Visits
Visits to British businesses and organisations are arranged. The visits provide a chance to meet British business people in a work situation. Students are encouraged to ask questions and to extract relevant business information from these situations. Students broaden their general knowledge of western business practice and gain insights into their own special areas.

Length of Course
The course runs throughout the year, and students may join the course at any time. Details of term dates and entry requirements are shown on the application form. There are approximately 22 hours of tuition per week (including commercial visits).

Overview

The MA in Anthropology is an advanced degree in socio-cultural anthropology in which students are given a sophisticated introduction to the theoretical underpinnings of the discipline, a block of modules that open up and explore the conceptual and methodological core of the discipline, and a series of specialised modules that show the range of socio-cultural anthropology today. Students are also required to write a thesis. The MA in Anthropology is primarily a scholarly degree that aims to equip students for later doctoral research or for work in roles that demand academic social-scientific knowledge or the particular skills of trained ethnographic researchers.

Course Structure

In the autumn and spring semesters, students complete an intensive course of four 6-week compulsory modules in anthropological theory (10 credits each) alongside two professional development modules and two optional modules (5 credits each). The taught programme develops students’ core theoretical competence and combines this with the methodological tools necessary to successfully formulate an anthropological topic and carry out a research project. In the summer, students register for the 30-credit Thesis, which must be completed by early September.

The photonics research groups in the physics departments of Heriot-Watt and St. Andrews Universities are internationally renowned, and have many links with industrial and university groups around the world. Major activities are based around optoelectronics, laser development, semiconductor physics, materials technology, ultra-fast phenomena, modern optics, and instrumentation. Previously called Optoelectronic and Laser Devices, this MSc course has been updated and enhanced, recognising the explosive growth of the UK and global photonics industry, fostered by the world-wide expansion in the exploitation of optical in telecommunications.

Programme content

Students receive postgraduate training in modern optics and semiconductor physics tailored to the needs of the optoelectronics industries. Graduates gain an understanding of the fundamental properties of optoelectronic materials and optical fibres, and experience of the technology and operation of a wide range of laser semiconductor devices appropriate to the telecommunications, information technology, sensing, and manufacturing industries.
