The ICT for Development (ICT4D) specialism is a strand within the established and highly successful MSc Practising Sustainable Development. It is offered jointly by the Politics, Development and Sustainability (PDS) Group and the UNESCO Chair/Centre in ICT4D at Royal Holloway, University of London.

This ICT4D Masters strand takes a global perspective on sustainable development and the role of ICTs; placed at the interface of research and practice, it is designed for those who want to launch or further their careers as development practitioners or scholars. It combines cutting-edge teaching on ICT4D with rigorous training in the broader field of sustainable development, to provide a well-rounded perspective on current and future development challenges. This degree extends knowledge, develops key skills and optimises career prospects.

The course is also offered at Postgraduate Diploma level for those who do not have the academic background necessary to begin an advanced Master’s degree. The structure of the Diploma is identical except that you will not write a dissertation. If you are successful on the Diploma you may transfer to the MSc, subject to academic approval.

The UNESCO Chair/Centre in ICT4D at Royal Holloway is an interdisciplinary centre involving staff in Geography, Management, Computer Science and Earth Sciences. One of the world leaders in its field, with 17 affiliated staff and 18 PhD students, it is a vibrant research community embedded in both the College and the international ICT4D Collective of ICT4D practitioners. It has excellent links with NGOs, businesses and international organisations. Friendly and diverse, it is an exciting place to study and network with other ICT4D experts.

The Politics, Development and Sustainability (PDS) group consists of over 20 research-active staff, 35 PhD students and 50 Master’s students on four MSc programmes. We are committed to conducting collaborative research which seeks to understand and contribute to addressing problems of social inequality, environmental destruction and injustice. The breadth of its members’ research places it in an ideal position to contribute to theoretical and policy debates on key challenges facing Africa, Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean today.

Course content and structure

The course is divided into three compulsory elements; theory, policy and practice; research training; and a dissertation. Students studying for the Postgraduate Diploma do not undertake the dissertation.

Core course units:
Sustainability, Development and Governance
This course will equip students with a detailed understanding of the development of sustainable development as a discourse. Students will explore key sustainability issues such as climate change, globalisation, and human responses with an emphasis on the emergence of environmental governance as a means to pursue sustainability.

Technology and Development
This course provides you with an introduction to the role of technology in development, focusing particularly on mobile phone and computer technologies. The course combines an understanding of key theoretical debates and how technologies have been applied in diverse sectors such as health and education. The course also includes training in the use of GIS (geographical information systems) within a development context.

ICT4D
This course gives you the opportunity to develop deeper understandings of cutting-edge applications of ICT4D research and practice. Topics covered include environmental change and Green ICT, open development and subversive forms of technology use, and logics of inclusion and exclusion in ICT programmes. You will also examine project planning, monitoring and evaluation in the field of ICT4D.

Participatory Research
This course combines detailed understanding of the theoretical underpinnings of participatory research and methods with practical experience of using different participatory research techniques. These include participatory diagramming, participatory video and participatory environmental monitoring.

Research Training
You will be provided with training in a range of methods to enable you to plan, carry out and complete a piece of research. There are three modules in this element:
- Social Research Methods Training - provides a range of social science methods for field research and analysis.
- Quantitative Methods for Graduates - provides basic statistical concepts and procedures used in empirical research.
- Development and Environment Research Training - provides guidance for planning, developing and undertaking research in a development and environment context.

Dissertation (MSc only)
The dissertation is of between 12,000 and 15,000 words, on a topic of your choice which has been approved by the supervisor. It requires both secondary and primary research, and the demonstration of originality in integrating theoretical and practical research methods in tackling a particular problem. You will be encouraged to carry out your dissertation in collaboration with an organisation in the field of development and environment.

Community Volunteer Project
You will undertake an independent volunteer project which will give you practical experience in gaining sustainability related work experience in a non-for profit organisation. The project will enhance your employability whilst and provide an opportunity to gain practical experience of third sector organisational objectives, cultures and practices.

Elective course units:
Sustainability, Development and Society
You will develop a detailed understanding of key social / environmental relationships incorporating contemporary issues in the geographies of sustainability. These will include 'risk society', sustainable cities, and the impacts of corporate sector activities on the environment. You will also understand the challenges to sustainable development at household and community levels, with a focus on community-based approaches to sustainable development.

Business Ethics and Enterprise
The aim of the course is to equip students with the moral frameworks and critical abilities necessary to understand the role of business in society from an ethical perspective. The course will cover different types of business including large publicly traded multinationals, small and medium sized enterprises, social enterprises and family firms. Students will be expected to understand the different issues in these organizational types and to articulate moral arguments from a range of different perspectives.

International Sustainability Management
This course provides participants with an understanding of how Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) informs sustainability management issues in large, transnational organisations. It will focus on issues such as consumption and sustainability as dichotomised between the apparently incompatible tensions of economic and environmental interests.

Master of Information Technology students will undertake a coherent programme of 180 credits approved by the programme manager and will follow one of two pathways.

Pathway 1

This one year full-time programme equips trainees to teach Mathematics up to and including GCSE and ICT at KS3 within the secondary sector (including Welsh medium if requested).

This programme refreshes and extends students' mathematical and ICT knowledge and provides opportunity to make a difference to young people's lives and aspirations.

The South West Wales Centre of Teacher Education has excellent graduate employment rates with 99% of graduates going into employment or further study (DLHE 14/15).

Course Overview

The course is split into a number of modules, each designed to give you all the skills you need to teach within the secondary sector. You will study various styles of teaching Mathematics and ICT to pupils, including lesson planning, resource preparation and selection, teaching approaches for examination courses, class management and control, assessment of attainment, and the impact of Mathematics and ICT on learning.

You will be assisted in developing the range of your specialist knowledge and skills to cover all the content required for the National Curriculum at key stage three, GCSE at key stage Four and GCE 'A' level at key stage five and equivalent vocational courses.

The course will involve concept and skill development in all aspects of Mathematics and ICT. You will be expected to work together in groups to present seminars such as ICT in Mathematics, A level topics and research into mathematical misconceptions.

Other aspects of the course include the Literacy and Numeracy Framework and as a Mathematics PGCE student you will be expected to lead support sessions on Numeracy to the whole Secondary PGCE cohort. There are also opportunities to teach and be involved with Further Mathematics A Level teaching and also to be involved in Mathematics Masterclasses with local Year 9 pupils, both in conjunction with Swansea University.

The PGCE Mathematics room is well equipped with internet-linked computers and a networked interactive whiteboard. There is good access to other ICT suites for timetabled sessions and plentiful open access to ICT facilities for trainees. At University you will receive specialist sessions in ICT as well as Mathematics.

The PGCE Mathematics with ICT course uses partner schools and colleges across South Wales. Placements are decided after consultations between mentors, subject tutors and the Programme Director. All placements will be found within realistic commuting distances; however, trainees are expected to be prepared to travel to placements.

It is available with English and Welsh medium student provision using long established English and Welsh medium partnership schools and colleges.

The course has recently been updated to reflect contemporary issues and changes within the world of education. It is taught by highly respected tutors who have considerable knowledge within their field and chosen specialism.

The course is challenging, but motivating and invigorating, combining practical strategies and skills with academic enquiry and theory.

There are opportunities to investigate areas of specialist interest.

The course is split between university and professional teaching practice, with approximately 12 weeks and occasional days and 24 weeks split between two placements. The weeks at University are designed in such a way that you experience lead lectures both with your own subject area and with students from different subject areas in order to have an insight about how a particular issue relates to different specialist subjects. These may be given by University Staff or by guest lecturers with specialist expertise.

There are also plenty of opportunities where your experience can be enhanced such as involvement with the Further Mathematics scheme, Year 9 Mathematics Masterclasses, numeracy support sessions and expert speakers from local schools and exam boards.

Within the newly designed course if you are achieving your QTS early it is envisaged that should you wish to take the opportunity you can arrange a fortnight placement at an establishment of your choice within the Secondary or 14-19 sector. This will enable you to observe, experience a specialist area that you may wish to pursue. It could include special needs schools, independent schools and training establishments. This opportunity is likely to increase your experience and employability.

The University offers excellent support to trainees in seeking their first posts. Participants are trained in interview techniques. There is also a large and popular annual Teaching Employment Fair in January.

The employment rate for the course is one of the best in Wales and many graduates of the course are now Heads of Department or Senior Teachers and act as Mentors for the programme.

Assessment

The course comprises of 120 credits, 40 of which are at Masters level and is assessed by a combination of written assignments and Professional Teaching Experience.

The assignments are a combination of level 6 and level 7 assignments and are designed to combine practical teaching strategies and academic enquiry.

The Professional teaching practice is assess through teaching observations by both experienced placement mentors and university tutors against the Qualified Teacher Standards.

Career Opportunities

The South West Wales Centre of Teacher Education has excellent graduate employment rates with 99% of graduates going into employment or further study (DLHE 14/15).

Many school and college departments, both locally and nationally, are staffed with several of our teachers and many of our trainees have gone on to forge successful teaching careers at strategic, professional and management levels at home and abroad.

Our PGCE graduates usually remain in close touch with us as they make their careers in the teaching profession and they often become Subject Mentors on the programme. This creates a very strong, sustainable professional network of teachers which is a rich source of continuing professional development.

In recent years there has been - and continues to be - a massive expansion in the number of information-and-communications-technology-for-development (ICT4D) projects (telecentres, ICT-enabled microenterprise, public service kiosks, e-government initiatives, e-health projects, etc) in developing and transitional economies.

Successful oversight of these projects requires ICT4D champions who possess a combination of technical competencies (e.g. information systems skills) and contextual competencies (e.g. development skills). Such a combination is, as yet, rarely found. This has resulted in a high project failure rate, and a recognition of training need.

This programme, therefore, aims to create the ICT4D champions who combine the necessary skills to see ICT4D projects through to sustainable delivery of development goals.

You will gain:
-Conceptual frameworks to understand the process of socio-economic development and the role of information and of ICTs in the development process
-New knowledge and skills to help in the effective planning, development, implementation and management of ICT4D initiatives

An overseas field visit is an integral part of the programme. The cost of the visit is included in the programme fee. In addition, participants may undertake research visits to organisations applying information systems in practice in the UK. Part-time students complete the full-time programme over 24 months. About the course

The ICT course aims to help trainee teachers build the confidence and skills needed to develop as successful teachers. The course is designed to prepare trainee teachers to teach ICT in the National Curriculum at Key Stage 3, Key Stage 4 and post-16 courses, including AS and A2 levels courses. In all university-based sessions student teachers are expected to be active participants.

Coursework is practically oriented and closely related to teaching and learning. Early in the course student teachers are introduced to a range of schemes and strategies currently in use in secondary ICT teaching. You will look at how children learn and develop. You will consider factors to be taken into account when developing lessons which are interesting, balanced and relevant to learners’ needs. You will have opportunities to explore the different ways in which pupils can develop understanding in ICT, and to become familiar with a variety of resources that can be used to support these.

Trainee teachers will prepare and demonstrate practical work of the kind undertaken by pupils and be encouraged to think about the implications for classroom organisation and management. A range of teaching approaches will be explored. Other important aspects of work at this stage in the course are lesson planning, lesson evaluation and assessing learners.

Those who elect to follow the course through the medium of Welsh attend Welsh-medium schools, additional seminars and weekends throughout the year. The TESOL with ICT MA at Brighton is one of a limited number of courses in the UK that allow language teachers to explore the role of media in the teaching and learning of languages, combining academic study with the design and development of materials.

The course is designed for professionals who already have experience of second language teaching, either in the UK or abroad. As with the other MAs in Brighton's English Language Teacher Development programme, it encourages you to locate your enquiries in your own professional context, so you can apply your newly acquired skills and knowledge directly.

The department has an extensive range of digital media capture and editing equipment, its own dedicated computer pool, and access to a television studio in the Checkland building, allowing you to work with the digital tools required for materials design and production. Typical areas for investigation include print, audio, audiovisual, interactive multimedia, podcasting, e‑learning, social software such as blogs and wikis, and interactive electronic whiteboards.

Our graduates have gone on to successful positions not only in second language teaching but also in the development and evaluation of language learning materials, for example, as project managers, materials authors and developers, self-access centre managers, and teacher trainers in the area of blended learning.

Academic support

We give extra support to TESOL students whose first language is not English, providing a variety of pre-sessional language programmes for students who want to improve their language skills before starting their degree.

Course structure

The TESOL with ICT MA is based on the idea that theory, practice and research in the field of teaching, learning and media are inextricably linked. All modules relate theories and research to professional problems, including both general issues and the individual professional issues of our students.

The course will help you to:

• Develop a critical understanding of a range of issues informing your own professional practice

Course Overview

The course is split into a number of modules each designed to give you all the skills you need to teach within the secondary sector. You will study various styles of teaching Computing, IT and Digital Literacy to pupils, including lesson planning, resource preparation and selection, teaching approaches for examination courses, class management and control, assessment of attainment, and the impact of IT on learning. You will be assisted in developing the range of your specialist knowledge and skills to cover all the content required for the National Curriculum at key stage three, GCSE at key stage Four and GCE 'A' level at key stage five and equivalent vocational courses.

This will involve concept and skill development in in all aspects of ICT together with computing and innovative programming languages such as SCRATCH at KS3 and Python at KS4.

During your time at university you will have a choice of opportunities to further your expertise, there is the option to join your Maths colleagues for a few hours a week which will enable you to teach Mathematics at KS3 in addition to Computing, IT and Digital Literacy, or if your interests lie with emerging technology then you will be able to opt for Cross-Curricular support and you will be assigned a subject area, this might be any one of the specialist PGCE course. The course is split between university and professional teaching practice, with approximately 12 weeks and occasional days and 24 weeks split between two placements. This year it is also hoped that the Secondary PGCE Computing and ICT will have the opportunity to join their Primary colleagues in their own conference on site in Swansea.

Within the newly designed course if you are achieving your QTS early it is envisaged that should you wish to take the opportunity you can arrange a fortnight placement at an establishment of your choice within the Secondary or 14-19 sector. This will enable you to observe, experience a specialist area that you may wish to pursue. It could include special needs schools, independent schools and training establishments. This opportunity is likely to increase your experience and employability.

Assessment

The course comprises of 120 credits, 40 of which are at Masters level and is assessed by a combination of written assignments and Professional Teaching Experience.

The assignments are a combination of level 6 and level 7 assignments and are designed to combine practical teaching strategies and academic enquiry.

The Professional teaching practice is assess through teaching observations by both experienced placement mentors and university tutors against the qualified Teacher Standards.

Computing with ICT is a national shortage subject, meaning successful trainees are highly employable. These routes will equip you with the skills and experience to teach at GCSE and A/AS levels, and vocational qualifications in both Computer Science and ICT.

Subject to confirmation of DfE funding, we usually run free pre-entry SKE and booster courses for national priority subjects, including Computing with ICT. These will be identified at interview for applicants who need support in some areas and confirmed with a PGCE place offer.

PGCE trainees will examine the theory and practice of computing, together with approaches to more general ICT skills and issues as they apply to teaching in the secondary school context. We work in close partnership with schools in designing, delivering and assessing the course.

Placement options

School placements are central to the course. As an intending teacher you will begin by developing professional awareness, understanding and skills common to learning and teaching in a variety of settings. You will begin to understand the inter-relationship between the school and its community.

Placements will be in at least two different schools or colleges and will range from inner city to rural settings, mixed and single gender schools, City Academies, Comprehensives and Selective Schools, 11-16, 11-18, sixth form and further education colleges.

Trainees also have the opportunity to apply for a four week enrichment experience overseas. These help to develop an international educational perspective and provide the chance to gain some teaching experience in an international school. Enrichment is in addition to PGCE units of study and opportunities may differ year on year, for example, in 2016 trainees were placed at British International Schools in Kazakhstan, Cyprus or Norway or public schools in Orleans, France.

About the Course

You will work with tutors and fellow trainees to develop innovative and exciting ways of delivering your knowledge of computing with ICT in the 11-19 context.

The course covers curriculum design, development of teaching materials, planning classroom activities and classroom management. You will also work with trainees from other subjects in a programme of lectures and tutor groups to explore general issues in secondary teaching.

We aim to develop analytical, successful and enthusiastic beginning teachers who are fully aware of the excitement and challenges which lie ahead and who can work effectively in a variety of educational settings.

Assessment details

There are two elements of assessment:

Degree information

The programme consists of university-based sessions, school-based sessions and teaching placements. University-based sessions will include the study of the Computing curriculum, lesson planning, effective teaching, classroom management and approaches to assessment. Some of the professional studies elements will be delivered in school.

Students will gain experience of a wide range of approaches to teaching, while working with very experienced mentors who are skilled at providing positive feedback and support.

Students undertake two level 7 (Master’s-level) modules of 30 credits each, totaling 60 credits. These can be carried forward onto full Master’s programmes at the IOE.

The Secondary PGCE consists of three core modules: two Master’s-level (level 7) modules, which are assessed through written assignments, and the Professional Practice module, which is assessed by the observation of practical teaching in placement schools.

Completion of the Professional Practice module and the two level 7 (Master’s level) modules (60 credits) will result in the award of a Postgraduate Certificate of Education (PGCE). Placement
You will spend most of your time (120 days) in schools, working with subject specialist mentors who will support you through your two school placements. We are fortunate to have a good choice of schools with whom we work, with some outstanding mentors and strong computing departments. The Professional Practice module is assessed through these placements, associated tasks and a portfolio.

Teaching and learning
The programme is delivered via keynote lectures, subject lectures, seminars, workshops, tutorials and directed study days at the IOE, as well as time spent in placements. Assessment is by practical teaching, assignments and portfolio tasks.

Students will also record their progress in a Career Entry and Development Profile statement. This will form part of an ongoing portfolio charting the student's continuing professional development.

Careers

Graduates of this programme are currently working across a broad range of areas. Some are working as computing and ICT teachers, while others have jobs as Heads of Computing/ICT. Graduates in this area can also be found working as senior managers in schools.

A PGCE from the IOE carries considerable currency in schools which, alongside the quality of training you receive, puts you in a strong position in the employment market. The CPD modules will enable you to develop advanced knowledge, understanding and skills within the module subject area.You'll be prepared for future career development, for example subject management roles in school; enabling you to manage the work of others and the strategic planning of your chosen subject across the whole school or specific age phase.

The option to gain 30 Masters Level credits per module through assessment is highly recommended as a route towards achieving higher degree qualifications.

• Study a CPD with masters level assessment allowing you to gain 30 masters level credits per module.

Masters level credits gained through the CPD modules can be used to count towards the award of full Masters qualifications such as the LSBU MA in Education.
