The aim of this course, run jointly with Dublin Institute of Technology, Kevin Street, is to provide postgraduate education in medical laboratory science for those wishing to pursue a career in this field. It provides an advanced programme in the molecular basis of disease including the etiology, pathogenesis and investigation of the disease process. I.T. and management as applied to Medical Laboratories are also covered. Students are also offered a range of specialist subject modules including: Cellular Pathology, Clinical Chemistry, Haematology, Immunology, Microbiology and Transfusion Science. Students develop research skills by partaking in an advanced practical project in their chosen area of specialisation.

Students are required to register with both DIT and TCD, and are full students of both institutions and enjoy the benefits of full post-graduate membership of both institutions.

The course is available on a part-time block-release basis and may be offered in future academic years on a full-time basis.The duration of the course is two academic years. Students attend college for ten weeks of formal learning with student directed learning, course work, assignments, tutor interaction and project work taking place during the remaining time.

The Early Modern Studies MA offers an innovative blend of skills training (palaeography and historical bibliography), object-based learning and museum visits. The core modules cover a wide range of disciplines, giving you a broad understanding of the early modern period. You can then tailor your programme to suit your interests, with over thirty optional modules, covering early modern culture, history and society.

About this degree

The MA will teach you critical reading skills, the ability to assess and weigh evidence, and construct persuasive arguments. It combines training in book history, bibliography, and paleography with a range of theoretical and methodological approaches to the study of the early modern period.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of three core modules (45 credits), between two and four optional modules (45 credits) and a dissertation (90 credits).

Dissertation/report

All students undertake an independent research project which culminates in a dissertation of 18,000 words.

Teaching and learning

The programme is delivered through a combination of tutorials, seminars, workshops, presentations, class discussions and library, archive, museum and gallery visits. Assessment is through essays, annotated bibliography and the dissertation.

Many of our students have been accepted to undertake further study as research students both at UCL and elsewhere, including the Universities of Oxford, Cambridge, York and Swansea. Employability

This MA will give you a very specific skill set, including manuscript handling and archival research. Depending on the optional modules you select you may also develop language skills and knowledge in information technologies and database use. These transferable skills will make you very employable within the heritage or cultural sectors, as well as library work, the arts, and other roles which require intensive research and/or information management.

The Masters by Research (MRes) is a part-time distance learning Masters Degree by research allowing graduates from disciplines related to Computing and I.T. to develop their subject specific and personal skills through a programme of guided and structured research studies. Delivered in the distance learning (DL) mode means that you will be able to access learning materials and interact with staff at the University remotely, using the latest technology and online resources. It is an intensive programme of research under the guidance of a research supervisor who is a specialist in the chosen area of research. The general area of your study must fit in with the overall ‘flavour’ of the award, but within that general area you will be able to specialise in a topic negotiated between you and your supervisor according to a ‘Learning Contract’. The part-time route is very suitable for existing technologists, lecturers and teachers in academic institutions and may produce outcomes that are valuable to a current or potential employer. The distance learning mode of study is also suitable for learners whose situation allows them time to do online research but makes it more difficult to visit the University.

Course content

The MRes programme by distance learning is demanding and requires the equivalent of a minimum of 48 weeks of study in the full-time mode. The distance learning MRes usually takes a minimum of two years to complete in the part-time mode and the maximum period of registration for part-time study is five years. The course structure is heavily negotiated throughout so that it fits what you are interested in. As with all research you will proceed at a pace that suits you, within the guidelines given above. You will need to be highly motivated and personally well-organised. The Programme begins with the Research Methods Module which provides the research training you will use on the remainder of the course. This runs in September each year, so the middle of September is the normal start time. You will draw up a Learning Contract with your supervisor after the Research Methods Module. The remaining modules are taken sequentially.

It is possible to finish the Programme with the award of Pg. Certificate after successfully completing the first two modules, a Pg Diploma after two more modules and the Masters by Research after successful completion of the Masters Dissertation.

Graduate destinations

Currently the Faculty supports research in the following areas of Computing Science, although these are not exclusive: Enterprise, Knowledge and Information Systems, Cloud Computing, Computer Games Programming, Software Engineering and Mobile Systems, the Internet of Things, Networks, Cybercrime and Embedded Systems, Web, Multimedia and Interactive Systems. As an MRes graduate. you would be well suited to a career in any of these areas, or for Computing research in general. The completion of the award often leads to a student being enabled to undertake a further two years of research for the award of PhD. The MRes will gain you exemption from the research methods training course that PhD students usually have to take and will allow you to move directly to PhD study without going through the MPhil to PhD transfer, thereby reducing the time taken to complete the PhD by one year in most cases.

The 2-year PG Diploma program uses a multi-disciplinary, research-informed approach to teach clinical and basic science related to the human systems (cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, musculoskeletal, female reproductive, renal and genitourinary, the eyes, and skin) and diagnostics & therapeutics.

The scientific background is taught in the context of clinical placements in Community Medicine, General Hospital Medicine, Front Door Medicine, Mental Health, General Surgery, Obstetrics & Gynaecology and Paediatrics.

Successful completion of the 2 year PG Diploma enables graduates to take the national certification exam, which is mandatory to register and work as a Physician Associate.

Students benefit from a strong exposure to clinicians and scientists with active research in medically related subjects.

Course Structure

The program is delivered by the Physician Associate Faculty that brings together clinicians and other experts from across the disciplines of primary and secondary medical care. The course content reflects the curriculum and learning requirements for the Physician Associate framework (PA CC 2012).

The Physician Associate programme at Bangor includes an integrated placement programme of work-based learning that will provide progressive experiential learning in a range of clinical settings to allow students to attain the standards of knowledge and understanding in clinical practice, including regulatory structures, professionalism and clinical competences expected of a Physician Associate. Placements will be grouped according to the following clinical subject headings and minimum periods:

  • Community Medicine (180h)
  • General Hospital Medicine (350 h)
  • Front Door Medicine (180 h)
  • Mental Health (90 h)
  • General Surgery (90h)
  • Obstetrics & Gynaecology (90 h)

During the course you will learn how to recognise and manage common and complex medical conditions as part of multi-professional team, to make independent and informed judgements on clinical problems and be trained to integrate knowledge and clinical practice. As a Physician Associate graduate you’ll be able to demonstrate outstanding interpersonal and professional skills when working with patients, carers and clinical multi-disciplinary teams in a multicultural environment. You will also have a comprehensive understating of I.T., record keeping and communication using a diverse range of media in evidence based practice and understand the importance of health promotion, disease prevention and inequalities in society and local communities.

The programme aims to give students a comprehensive knowledge of the concepts, principles and technologies used in clinical practice in the following areas:

You be able to demonstrate the qualities and transferable skills necessary for employment in the medical domain including history taking and consultation skills, and physical examinations tailored to the needs of the patient and the demands of the clinical situation. You’ll also be able to demonstrate an understanding and appreciation of the needs of patients/clients, and decision-making in complex and unpredictable contexts.

Teaching, Learning and Assessment

Teaching occurs via lectures, clinical placements, practical classes and group work including case centred discussions often delivered by academic clinicians who hold joint University and Health board contracts. Students benefit from a high number of contact hours that includes utilisation of our state-of-the art teaching laboratories and simulation suite at the hospital. The course involves a comprehensive treatment of the science and technology of pharmaceutical analysis with particular emphasis on the regulatory environment in which the pharmaceutical industry operates. It is intended for suitably qualified graduates currently working in or aspiring to work in the pharmaceutical industry - in particular non-pharmacy graduates employed in quality control or quality assurance roles requiring specialised training, retraining or upgrading of skills. The course may also be attractive to technical managers in regulatory affairs, product development and other related areas. The objective is to equip graduates with the appropriate analysis skills required by the pharmaceutical and veterinary manufacturing industries.

The course is available for full-time study over one calendar year or part-time over two years and consists of lectures, workshop and laboratory work. Part-time teaching is normally scheduled for Fridays during academic terms. The course comprises lectures, workshops, seminars, laboratory work, written assignments and factory visits. In addition each student must write a major essay on a designated topic in the area of pharmaceutical analysis. Students proceeding to a M.Sc. degree will be required to undertake a research project and present a detailed scientific report at the end of the course.

The course consists of eight basic modules: regulatory aspects of pharmaceutical analysis, statistics, GLP chromatographic analysis, spectroscopic and physical methods of analysis, pharmacopoeial methods of drug analysis, analysis of low level drug analysis, specialized pharmaceutical methods of analysis, biological and pharmacological methods and pharmaceutical formulation.

The taught modules are supported by lectures and workshops on presentation and research skills and visits to industrial laboratories. The course is taught mainly by College staff, although there is a contribution from specialist visiting lecturers. The research project may be conducted either in the School of Pharmacy or at the student's place of employment but in either case supervision is exercised by a member of the School of Pharmacy academic staff.

Overall assessment of candidates is based on tutor marked assignments (TMAs) during the course work and written examinations in May/June each year. Credits are available for all assignments including laboratory reports. The M.Sc. project report should be of 20,000 words and is examined in September. Candidates must successfully complete the taught component of the course at the Trinity term examinations, before proceeding to the M.Sc. project. Provision is available for a supplemental examination in September each year if required. A reasonable attempt is required in all aspects of the examination process. A pass mark of 40% is normally required but compensation is applied where appropriate.
