Occupational hygiene is concerned with the identification, evaluation and management of chemical, physical and biological agents arising from work. Occupational hygienists are employed in a wide range of industries, including the petrochemical industry, manufacturing, mining, aero-industry, service sectors and the health sector. Many hygienists are also actively involved in research in a range of related fields. Currently, there is significant demand from large multinational companies, and there is a worldwide shortage of trained occupational hygienists.

This programme covers all aspects of occupational hygiene, and any student registered on it will be expected to complete a dissertation based on an occupational hygiene topic. A student on this programme may apply for research funding from the British Occupational Hygiene Society to cover costs associated with his or her research project.

Significant emphasis is placed on learning and research. One of the first courses students take is Critical Thinking, which provides them with all the skills necessary to take full advantage of their studies.

As this is a distance learning programme, students are provided with study guides and supporting texts. Increasing use is being made of electronic information sources, and an online community is being developed for students. Students are invited to their learning centres at the start of the autumn and spring terms, giving them an opportunity to speak to tutors and other students.

Course learning outcomes

Graduates of the Graduate Diploma of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene will be able to:
*Integrate and apply an advanced body of theoretical and technical knowledge in the disciplines of tropical medicine and hygiene with depth in epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical presentation, complications, differential diagnosis, investigation and management of tropical diseases

As a graduate of this programme you will obtain an appreciation of the knowledge necessary to recognise, evaluate and control hazards in the workplace, including chemical, physical and biological agents.

In the taught component of the course, the emphasis is on acquiring a thorough understanding of the theoretical principles and research methodologies underpinning the topic covered by each module. Emphasis is placed on the development of the students' critical appraisal skills and a capacity to lead an occupational health team at a senior management level.

The dissertation provides an opportunity to develop experience in applying these principles and research methods to a problem of particular interest to the student.

The graduate program in Occupational and Environmental Hygiene is offered by the School of Population and Public Health and is a complement to its graduate programs in Population and Public Health. The vision of the graduate program in Occupational and Environmental Hygiene is a world in which risks from occupational and environmental hazards are minimized by their recognition, evaluation, and control, to the benefit of workplace and community health and well-being.

Students interested in research or professional careers in any aspect of workplace or community environmental exposures and their impact on human health are encouraged to apply. The program's major research themes include acoustics, noise and vibration; exposure assessment; analytical methods development using immunological, biological, chemical and microsensor methods; occupational and environmental epidemiology; and risk assessment and translation of research to policy.

Program Requirements

Students in the M.Sc. program may choose to follow a project or thesis option. Because of the varied backgrounds of students, both options are relatively course-intensive and include specific non-credit requirements related to adult education in addition to regular coursework.

Students in the project option must complete 27 credits chosen from a list of specified core courses, a further 9 credits of approved electives, and a 6-credit project based on a four-month co-op placement (culminating in a comprehensive technical report and presentations) to make up a total of 42 credits of course and project work. After completion of all required components students must also pass a comprehensive examination.

Students in the thesis option must complete 18 credits chosen from a list of specified core courses, a further 12 credits of approved electives, and a 12-credit research thesis (culminating in an oral examination) to make up a total of 42 credits of course and research work.

This course develops the careers of doctors whose interest is the practice of medicine in tropical and low- and middle-income countries. The course offers a wide choice of modules and provides training in clinical tropical medicine at the Hospital for Tropical Diseases.

The Diploma in Tropical Medicine & Hygiene (DTM&H):
All students going on the MSc will take the Diploma in Tropical Medicine & Hygiene. Students with a prior DTM&H, or holding 60 Masters level credits from the East African Diploma in Tropical Medicine & Hygiene may apply for exemption from Term 1 via accreditation of prior learning.

Careers

Graduates from this course have taken a wide variety of career paths including further research in epidemiology, parasite immunology; field research programmes or international organisations concerned with health care delivery in conflict settings or humanitarian crises; or returned to academic or medical positions in low- and middle-income countries.

Objectives

By the end of this course students should be able to:

- understand and describe the causation, pathogenesis, clinical features, diagnosis, management, and control of the major parasitic, bacterial, and viral diseases of developing countries

- demonstrate knowledge and skills in diagnostic parasitology and other simple laboratory methods

- understand and apply basic epidemiological principles, including selecting appropriate study designs

- apply and interpret basic statistical tests for the analysis of quantitative data

- critically evaluate published literature in order to make appropriate clinical decisions

- communicate relevant medical knowledge to patients, health care professionals, colleagues and other groups

- understand the basic sciences underlying clinical and public health practice

Structure

Term 1:
All students follow the course for the DTM&H. Term 1 consists entirely of the DTM&H lectures, seminars, laboratory practical and clinical sessions, and is examined through the DTM&H examination and resulting in the award of the Diploma and 60 Master's level credits at the end of Term 1.

Terms 2 and 3:
Students take a total of five study modules, one from each timetable slot (Slot 1, Slot 2 etc.). Recognising that students have diverse backgrounds and experience, the course director considers requests to take any module within the School's portfolio, provided that this is appropriate for the student.

Project Report:
During the summer months (July - August), students complete a research project in a subject of their choice, for submission by early September. Projects may involve writing up and analysing work carried out before coming to the School, a literature review, or a research study proposal. Some students gather data overseas or in the UK for analysis within the project. Such projects require early planning.

Students undertaking projects overseas will require additional funding of up to £1,500 to cover costs involved. The majority of students who undertake projects abroad receive financial support for flights from the School's trust funds set up for this purpose.

The Occupational Health and Safety master’s program, a concentration in Engineering Technology, offers mostly evening classes to accommodate working adults attending school part-time. Occupational health and safety specialists analyze workplaces to help prevent disease and injury to workers and damage to the environment related to biological, chemical, ergonomic, and physical factors. They may inspect work environments for potential hazards, design new programs and procedures, and enforce public health and safety regulations. MTSU’s graduate degree includes both thesis and non-thesis options. Courses cover a range of topics such as industrial hygiene, fire safety, federal and state safety and environmental laws, safety psychology, ergonomics, toxicology, industrial safety, and safety planning. Faculty members have strong academic backgrounds and practical work experience in engineering, industrial management, vocational education, safety, and industrial hygiene. Graduate assistantships are available to qualified students. Also there may be internships, short-term work experiences, and cooperative education experiences available.

Degrees

Occupational Health and Safety is a concentration leading to the Master of Science (M.S.) degree at MTSU under the Engineering Technology major. In addition, there is also an Engineering Technology concentration. Thesis and non-thesis options are available for both programs.

To be admitted, applicants must have:

taken the Graduate Record Exam (GRE)—typically a GRE quantitative score of 148 and a verbal score of 143 for successful applications
a bachelor’s degree

Students complete 18 hours of core courses including safety planning and take 9 hours of concentration courses in safety technology and engineering, accident prevention, and occupational and environmental hygiene. The thesis option is a 30-hour program, while the non-thesis option is 36 hours with a Six Sigma research project course and 6 hours of electives that can include a cognate in management, computer science, economics, or psychology.

Career

The median annual wage for occupational health and safety specialists was $70,210 in May 2015, and the job outlook is expected to grow by 7.4% in Tennessee—almost double the national projection. The majority of graduates are employed by industry or government. Some pursue other advanced degrees. Federal agencies include the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). The programme is divided into seven subject areas that include: occupational health, occupational hygiene, ergonomics, safety and risk management, research methods, legal studies, and management studies. Students will gain experience in the use of state-of-the-art equipment and software packages. They will also observe occupational health & safety in the workplace at first-hand through extensive site visits. The Global Mental Health programme is designed for students who wish to gain a comprehensive understanding of the issues surrounding the new discipline of global mental health. It will suit students from a wide variety of academic and professional backgrounds, including clinicians, researchers, development workers, policy makers and service planners looking to work in low resource settings.

You will acquire the relevant knowledge and skills required to initiate, develop and implement policies in low resource settings and to conduct and critically evaluate research on Global Mental Health. Our course is an excellent preparation for careers in national mental health policy, research and international agencies.

This master is designed to contribute to the development of competent occupational safety and health (OSH) professionals.
A multidisciplinary background is needed to operate successfully in the broad field of OSH. The course therefore incorporates training sessions on the topics and disciplines relevant to OSH. The training focuses not only on OHS issues but also on the development of organizational, managerial and inter-personal skills. Specific study visits are planned to offer direct interaction with experts in the field. Visits to 12 different productive settings in Italy are planned in order to offer direct interaction with experts in the field.

The master course will have three phases, one consisting of 20 weeks online distance learning, another consisting of 11 weeks residential training at the ITC-ILO campus in Turin, Italy and another distance phase of 21 weeks for the preparation of the dissertation.

1st Phase: Preparatory Internet-based distance learning

. This phase includes 370 hours for self-studying and exercises and 180 hours for preparing and submitting the assessments.

Participants will be introduced to the fundamentals and basic concepts of the OSH through the following eight modules:

Module A1: Introduction to the occupational safety and health.

Module A2: Occupational Safety.

Module A3: Occupational Hygiene.

Module A4: Occupational Medicine.

Module A5: Occupational Psychosociology and Ergonomics.

Module A6: National OSH Governance.

Module A7: Organization of OSH at the enterprise level.

Module A8: Participatory approaches for the improvement of the working conditions.

This phase is preparatory. It will enable participants with different levels and fields of knowledge to reach an adequate and homogeneous level for taking advantage of the residential phase.

2nd Phase: Residential phase of Turin

. This phase will include classroom training (315 hours), study visits to selected enterprises and related training sessions (125 hours), and 110 hours of assessment.
Instructors will use lectures, discussions, exercises and other interactive learning activities to strike a balance between theory and practice and to stimulate discussion among the participants and professors. A practical approach based on the analysis and resolution of OSH issues will be taken.

The contents are split into 11 topics (one for each week). The modules in this phase are:

Module 1: Safety techniques.

Module 2: Management competences.

Module 3: Major hazard control.

Module 4: OSH management systems.

Module 5: Physical agents.

The Workplace Health Management programme is designed for those with an interest in promoting health and safety at work including nurses, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and managers.
