Course details

You’ll obtain advanced analytical skills in the core subject areas of geotechnics, structural analysis and hydraulics. About the course

The course is designed for those who have already graduated with a civil engineering or engineering-related degree. Successful completion of the MSc is designed to provide the educational base for progression to Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.

You will obtain advanced analytical skills in your chosen subject areas. You will have the opportunity to learn to design steel and concrete framed structures using modern structural analysis software, use advanced theory for the design and implementation of geotechnical works, apply advanced hydraulic concepts and model hydraulic systems, learn about advanced materials technologies and use advanced techniques to model transport and other systems. You will develop skills in project management and can choose whether you want to learn about environmental management or construction law and sustainable procurement.

In structures, you will also learn to assess existing buildings and design adaptations and apply the stiffness matrix method to analyse two-dimensional structures. In geotechnical engineering you will design earthworks, and slope and retaining walls. In hydraulics you will study open channel and pipe flow and urban pollution management. In materials you will learn about special concretes and sustainability and materials repair and rehabilitation. Graduate students will find the programme of substantial use in developing their knowledge and skills base for bridge analysis, design and management.

The programme also offers the opportunity for practising bridge engineers to update their knowledge of current design and assessment codes and guidelines, become familiar with developments in new techniques for the design, construction and management of bridges.

The Bridge Engineering programme encompasses a wide range of modules addressing the whole life-analysis of bridge structures from design to end-of-life.

Brunel’s MSc in Water Engineering is unique in providing specialist knowledge on the critical sub-topics of water and wastewater management and engineering, desalination systems, building water services engineering, industrial waste water management, and water in health care.

The programme demonstrates the links between theory and practice by including input from our industrial partners and through site visits. This is a key aspect for establishing a competitive and high added value course that provides adequate links with industry.

During the programme you will also learn about the development and application of models that estimate the carbon and water footprint within the energy and food sector.

The MSc is delivered by experienced industry professionals who bring significant practical experience to the course – and the University’s complete suite of engineering facilities and world-class research experience are set up for development and engineering of advanced systems, testing a variety of processes, designs and software tools.

*Recent figures indicate that 1.1 billion people worldwide do not have access to clean drinking water, while 2.6 billion do not have adequate sanitation (source: WHO/UNICEF 2005). 

Course Content

The primary aim of this programme is to create master’s degree graduates with qualities and transferable skills for demanding employment in the water engineering sector. Graduates will have the independent learning ability required for continuing professional development and acquiring new skills at the highest level.

Teaching

Our philosophy is to underpin theoretical aspects of the subject with hands-on experience in applying water engineering techniques. Although you may move on to project management and supervision roles, we feel it important that your knowledge is firmly based on an understanding of how things are done. To this end, industrial partners will provide guest lectures on specialist topics.

In addition to teaching, water engineering staff at Brunel are active researchers. This keeps us at the cutting edge of developments and, we hope, allows us to pass on our enthusiasm for the subject.

How many hours of study are involved?

Contact between students and academic staff is relatively high at around 20 hours per week to assist you in adjusting to university life. As the course progresses the number of contact hours is steadily reduced as you undertake more project-based work.

How will I be taught?

Lectures:
These provide a broad overview of the main concepts and ideas you need to understand and give you a framework on which to expand your knowledge by private study.
Laboratories:
Practicals are generally two- or three-hour sessions in which you can practise your observational and analytical skills, and develop a deeper understanding of theoretical concepts.
Design Studios:
In a studio you will work on individual and group projects with guidance from members of staff. You may be required to produce a design or develop a solution to an engineering problem. These sessions allow you to develop your intellectual ability and practice your teamwork skills.
Site visits:
Learning from real-world examples in an important part of the course. You will visit sites featuring a range of water engineering approaches and asked to evaluate what you see.
One-to-one:
On registration for the course you will be allocated a personal tutor who will be available to provide academic and pastoral support during your time at university. You will get one-to-one supervision on all project work.

Assessment

Several methods of assessment are employed on the course. There are written examinations and coursework. You will undertake projects, assignments, essays, laboratory work and short tests.

Project work is commonplace and is usually completed in groups to imitate the everyday experience in an engineering firm, where specialists must pool their talents to design a solution to a problem.

In this situation you can develop your management and leadership skills and ensure that all members of the group deliver their best. Group members share the mark gained, so it is up to each individual to get the most out of everyone else.

Extensive facilities
Students can make the most of laboratory facilities which are extensive, modern and well equipped. We have recently made a major investment in our Joseph Bazalgette Laboratories which includes hydraulic testing laboratory equipment and facilities such as our open channel flow flumes.

Personal tutors
Although we recruit a large number of highly qualified students to our undergraduate, postgraduate and research degrees each year, we don’t forget that you are an individual. From the beginning of your time here, you are allocated a personal tutor who will guide you through academic and pastoral issues.

Accreditation

This interuniversity 'master after master' program (60 ECTS) is jointly organized by the Belgian Nuclear Higher Education Network (BNEN), a consortium of six Belgian universities: Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Universiteit Gent, Université de Liège , Université Catholique de Louvain et Université Libre de Bruxelles and the Belgian Nuclear Research Centre (SCK-CEN). Students can enroll for this master program at each of the six partner universities. The program is built up of 31 ECTS of common compulsory courses, 9 ECTS of elective courses and a compulsory Master Thesis of 20 ECTS.

The primary objective of the programme is to educate young engineers in nuclear engineering and ts applications and to develop and maintain high-level nuclear competences in Belgium and abroad. BNEN catalyses networking between academia, research
centres, industry and other nuclear stakeholders. Courses are organised in English and in a modular way: teaching in blocks of one to three weeks for each course, allowing for optimal time management for professional students and facilitating registration for individual modules.
All courses take place at SCK•CEN, in Mol, Belgium. The lectures take place in a dedicated, brand-new classroom in the conference centre of SCK•CEN (Club-House), located in a wooded area and nearby the SCK•CEN restaurant and library services. About the programme

The one-year progamme was created in close collaboration with representatives of the utility companies and power plants and teaches students in all aspects of nuclear technology and its applications, creating nuclear engineering
experts in the broad sense. Exercises and hands-on sessions in the specialised laboratories of SCK•CEN complement the theoretical classes and strengthen the development of nuclear skills and attitudes in a research environment. Various technical visits
are organised to research and industrial nuclear facilities.
The programme can be divided into three core blocks:
ƒ- A set of introductory courses allowing refreshing or first contact with the basic notions of nuclear physics, material sciences and the
principles of energy production through use of nuclear phenomena.

Transportation Studies (20 Credits)

Energy is the largest and one of the most dynamic industry sectors. It raises many challenges both politically and technically, from traditional exploration and production of fossil fuels to more recent mining extraction methods (hydraulic fracturing or 'fracking'), renewables and environmental protection. Queen Mary is only one of a few universities in the world to offer an LLM in Energy and Natural Resources Law and this programme builds upon well-established areas at Queen Mary, such as Commercial Law, Dispute Resolution, Environmental Law and Regulation.

All these constituent elements of Energy and Natural Resources law are approached through a comparative and international lens and prepare students to enter practice as regulators, lawyers in private practice of public sector lawyers. What is the Master of Nuclear Engineering about?

Structure

The current programme can be divided into three core blocks:

The collaboration with SCK*CEN makes it possible to include actual use of facilities in the curriculum, supporting the development of skills and competences in a research environment. All subjects are taught by academics appointed by the partner universities, whereas the practical exercises and laboratory sessions are supervised by the experts of SCK*CEN. The Master’s thesis offers an opportunity for internship in industry or in a research laboratory.

All teaching activities take place on the premises of SCK*CEN. Courses are organised in English and in a modular way; teaching in blocks of one to three weeks for each module allows optimal time management for students and lecturers, facilitates registration for individual modules, and allows easy exchange with international students.

BNEN has served as a role model for the European Nuclear Education Network (ENEN) which now has become an association of over 60 members (universities, industry, regulators, research centres), aiming at facilitating mobility in Europe for students in nuclear engineering.

One particular aspect of the BNEN degree is that it automatically leads to the recognition as Class I Expert by the Federal Agency of Nuclear Control. In order to receive this accreditation the programme must at least offer 24 credits in Nuclear Safety and 12 credits in Radioprotection. 

Spotlight 

The Master of Science in Nuclear Engineering programme is an internationally oriented, interuniversity programme organised by BNEN in close collaboration with nuclear research centres and industry. The aim of the BNEN programme is to provide students with all the skills and scientific and technical background necessary to carry out duties at a high level of responsibility in order to ensure the safe and economical operation of nuclear power plants, the regulation and control of nuclear installations or to design new nuclear systems.

A major strength of the BNEN programme, as to its sustainability, is that it allows providing high quality academic education by experts from (or appointed by) the main Belgian universities at low individual cost and thus very efficiently harmonised/rationalised. In addition, the participation of the nuclear research centre SCK*CEN in the consortium provides superb realistic experimental facilities in a difficult (radioactive) environment at low cost for the universities.

A further fundamental strength of the programme can be found in the fact that a well-balanced curriculum is offered where the contents and format have been discussed at length with representatives of the major nuclear companies that are the first potential employers of the graduates. Objectives and programme outcomes were defined that encompass in depth disciplinary specific competences as well as, but in a less pronounced way, transferable skills and competences that are needed for an efficient integration of a graduate in a larger engineering team. There is a nearly complete overlap between objectives and realised competences in courses, electives, exercises and Master’s thesis. This can be ascribed to the following contributing factors:

  • There is a good balance between theory and practical skills. This is implemented through an appropriate diversity of didactic formats, including exercises and/or labs for nearly all courses.
  • There is a good balance between basic subjects and advanced subjects through elective course modules and topical days organized by SCK*CEN.
  • There is appropriate care for multidisciplinary scientific competences and for transferable skills through the importance given to the Master’s thesis.
  • The competences of the teaching staff (lecturers and assistants) with respect to the theoretical background are strong.
  • There is a good mix of junior and senior lecturers.
  • The education in programmes is backed by world-class research at the universities, the research center and the involvement of teachers working in international research institutes.
  • The involvement of several professors who have their principal employment in nuclear companies.
  • There is a large and dynamic group of young researchers involved in the course teaching (seminars), labs and exercises sessions and as mentors of Master’s theses.

Each 20 credit module will take approximately 200 hours of independent study (the dissertation 600 hours). Special course features

The MSc is delivered in a distance learning regime. In this regime the emphasis is on learning rather than teaching, and the tutorial team is staffed and supported by a combination of experienced educational practitioners, together with experienced practitioners drawn from the national and international lift industry.

At the beginning of each academic year students are invited to participate in the annual Symposium on Lift and Escalator Technologies, organized in conjunction with the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) Lifts Group. You will have an opportunity to attend this event at reduced registration fee. The symposium has become an annual event, is in its fifth year and brings together over 100 industrial and academic experts from within the field of vertical transportation engineering with peer-reviewed papers on the subject of their research being presented and published.

The programme holds regular online meetings through the WizIQ/ virtual classroom tools within NILE (Northampton Integrated Learning Environment). These are attended virtually by staff, student representatives and industry experts (including visiting professors and fellows). Students have an opportunity to attend open virtual (online) meetings to discuss their learning progress. This virtual environment helps to reduce the potential isolation of students and provides the opportunity for the tutors to supply additional learning and tutorial materials.

Careers

The broad range of skills, experiences and expertise developed during this course will mean graduates are better placed to progress in their professional career. The programme is in the process of accreditation by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE).

The course was initially developed through collaboration with the Lift industry and is extensively supported by the industry. Its content is regularly reviewed by industry experts – including four visiting professors/fellows all of whom hold senior positions within the industry or academia.

These fellows also assume associate lecturer roles, and assist with the delivery and support of modules and dissertations on the programme. The School of Science and Technology has an active research programme in the field of lift engineering as well as well-equipped laboratory facilities for those wishing to pursue a research degree (MPhil/PhD).

Students will learn how to acquire knowledge from a range of sources including history, horticulture, architecture, garden archaeology and other subjects, to develop an appreciation of the study of garden history as a cultural discipline.

Students will be able to appreciate the differences in garden-making over time and in different countries, from the 16th century to the present day in Britain, Europe and America. Emphasis will be on design and management, ownership, and the culture from which these examples have evolved.

This degree will provide an academically rigorous environment in which students will learn a range of academic research and writing skills. Teaching will be undertaken at the Institute of Historical Research (http://www.history.ac.uk/), with a strong emphasis on tutor/student interaction in class. There will be practical sessions at museums and libraries, as well as visits to gardens in London. There will also be an optional field trip to Italy in the spring.

Structure

The course will be run on a full-time basis over one year. Teaching will take place on Thursdays from 10:00 to 17:00 and will be divided between two terms. The third term will be dedicated to dissertation preparation and writing. Please get in touch if you would like to see the full timetable.

The first term will showcase the huge variety of resources available to study garden and landscape history from archaeology, architecture, cartography, horticulture, manuscripts, paintings and other works of art, from the sixteenth century to the present day.

Module 2: Culture and Politics of Gardens (60 credits)

This module consists of six optional units of which students must choose three.

These sessions aim to:

Develop students’ knowledge and understanding of gardens and landscapes in different countries
Develop students’ critical analysis and judgement
Demonstrate the importance of context and the relationship of garden and landscape history to other disciplines such as literature, social history, film and visual media and the history of ideas
The module will look at Historiography, theory, the connection between culture and politics in landscape making and the expansion of the skills of term one across regional boundaries.

For instance, the influence in Britain of the Italian Renaissance’s new ideas on garden making, including architecture, sculpture and hydraulic engineering; iconography in gardens and landscapes; formality in garden-making as an indicator of the power of the owner, from the sixteenth century onwards, as in France; different aspects of the ‘natural’ garden from the eighteenth century onwards; conflict between the ‘natural’ and the formal in the nineteenth century between William Robinson and Reginald Blomfield in Britain; gender and garden making; and shifting boundaries between architect, landscape architect and plantsman relating to the status of those designing gardens and landscapes in the 21st century.

The Advanced Geotechnical Engineering MSc will nurture and develop your understanding of the principles and theories behind ground engineering.

Topics include deep foundations in urban areas, tunnelling, foundations for energy infrastructure, deep water energy resources exploration and field monitoring.

During your studies you will have the opportunity to apply the knowledge and practical understanding of scientific methodology you have acquired on a research project under the guidance and advice of an experienced supervisor.

This will help you develop the skills to acquire, analyse, and critically evaluate data, and then draw valid, defendable conclusions that can withstand professional scrutiny.

Graduates are highly employable, and may progress to relevant specialist PhD or EngD research programmes in the field.

Programme structure

This programme is studied over one academic year (full-time) and between two and five academic years (part-time or distance learning). It consists of eight taught modules and a dissertation.

On successful completion of this MSc programme students will be deemed to have completed the further learning necessary to combine with a suitable BEng (Hons) degree fulfilling the academic base for the professional qualification of Chartered Engineer.

Students must choose eight modules from those listed above. For the main and subsidiary awards there are restrictions on the choice of modules within each module group. These are outlined in the table above.

Educational aims of the programme

The programme aims to provide graduates with:

  • A comprehensive understanding of some of the challenges faced during the analysis, design and construction of foundation and geotechnical structures
  • The ability to select and apply most appropriate analysis methodology for problems in ground engineering including advanced and new methods
  • The ability to design foundations in a variety of ground conditions 
  • A working knowledge of the key UK, European and some International standards and codes of practice associated with the analysis and design of foundations and the ability to interpret and apply these to both familiar and unfamiliar problems
  • The necessary technical further learning towards fulfilling the educational base for the professional qualification of Chartered Engineer

Academic support, facilities and equipment

Modules are taught by academic members in the geotechnical area, and some lectures for the Advanced Geotechnical Engineering MSc will be delivered by visiting academics and practicing engineers from industry.

You will also be allocated a personal tutor to guide you during your time with us at the University. You can expect a varied, stimulating and rewarding time here and will receive all the support you need to progress your learning. 

In addition to the University Library and Learning Centre’s extensive resources, our excellent testing facilities can support experimentally based MSc dissertation projects.

VJ Tech Prize for Best MSc Student in Advanced Geotechnical Engineering

A prize of £1,000, sponsored by VJ Tech, one of the world’s top geotechnical engineering manufacturers specialising in advanced soil testing equipment for labs.

The prize will be awarded to the best performing student(s) on the MSc Advanced Geotechnical Engineering based on module results and overall performance during the programme.

The £1,000 may be awarded to an individual student or split between two students displaying the best performance in their MSc programme.

Keller Prize for Best MSc Project in Advanced Geotechnical Engineering

A prize of £500 sponsored by Keller Group plc, the world’s largest independent ground engineering contractor.

The prize will be awarded to the student(s) with the best MSc Dissertation completed as part of the MSc Advanced Geotechnical Engineering, as defined by the course leader according to the module results and potential impact of the output of the individual project.

The £500 may be awarded to an individual student or split between a number of students displaying the best performance in their MSc Dissertations.
