Dissertation

All students must complete a minimum of three compulsory modules and three optional modules, plus a 15,000-words dissertation, in order to fulfil the requirement for the MA (totalling 90 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System)). In addition, students may wish to select one extra optional module (equalling 10 ECTS) and / or the internship (20 ECTS) for additional credit, totalling between 110 and 120 credits.

Assessment

The MA is assessed through essays and examinations, along with more innovative forms of assessment such as legal reports, a media project, mock funding proposal presentations and class participation.

Mode of study

Study options: full-time over one year, or part time over 24 months or 36 months.
Part time students may choose at least three optional modules during the spring term of years 1 or 2. Part time students may undertake more than one internship, e.g. in both years and/or during the summer between years 1 and 2.

The Human Rights MA develops the skills and theoretical tools needed to carry out human rights research. It provides an understanding of the foundations, nature, limits and implementation of human rights. Students are introduced to philosophical, legal and policy issues and encouraged to engage with them in a critical way.

Degree information

Students develop an understanding of the central issues and problems in the formulation, defence, development, interpretation and application of human rights instruments, law, practice and policy. They gain knowledge of central disciplines and their contribution to human rights studies, and are equipped with key research skills in human rights.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits. The programme consists of four core modules (75 credits), three optional modules (45 credits), and a research dissertation (60 credits).

We will help you to develop the skills and understanding to prepare for employment in the fields of conflict management and resolution, humanitarian assistance and displacement, human rights and development initiatives. The key aspects of your learning will be the focus on conflict and displacement. We value a people-centred approach and an emphasis on human security which combines both human rights and human development.

The course approaches development as an important security strategy and considers displacement a measure of human security. We will encourage you to adopt an independent critical approach to contemporary theories of conflict, human rights and human security.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

This course will help you to develop important skills for a key role in the area of conflict, displacement and human security.

The course provides an inter-disciplinary approach to the study of the conflict, generalised violence and social inequality in contemporary global contexts. It examines the complexities of global, regional and local structures, and the relationships to the changing character of conflict.

Your studies will focus on two core modules: Conflict; Displacement and Human Security, and Research Methods and two specialist option modules in the areas of displacement, development, human rights, global environmental politics and community development. This will prepare you to begin a dissertation during the summer term for submission in September.

Central to this is the idea of the international HR manager who combines specialist technical knowledge with a strong understanding of the social, political and ethical context of business in a globalised world.

In this world, in addition to technical expertise in particular HR functions, managers need to understand national differences and how to manage in cross-cultural environments. They need to be aware of how to organise processes and projects across national boundaries. They need to be able to analyse the impact of different national institutional contexts on firm structures, innovation processes and work organisation. They need to be aware of the broader social and environmental consequences of their actions and the way in which national and international structures of soft and hard law impact on their policies and procedures. They need to be sensitive to changing social expectations of the responsibilities of firms and the way in which new internet based technologies make companies more visible and accountable to global social movements as well as more locally based coalitions of citizens and consumers. They need to be able to reflect on how to be an HR manager in such complex contexts, and to adapt creatively and effectively to challenges in a fast-moving environment.

The course will look at the management of people including theories of management and organisation, motivation, groups and team working, internal structures and decision-making processes, and leadership. The management of the various activities associated with the practice of HRM, namely recruitment and selection, training and development, reward management employment law, equality and diversity will also be examined.

The course will also explore the nature of the organisation, the strategy and structure of multinational firms in different sectors (such as manufacturing, transport and professional services) will be analysed in cross-national settings in order to understand national differences and how to manage in cross-cultural environments.

Structure

This course is taught from September to June and you will study a range of both compulsory core modules and a range of options. Following on from the taught stage you will undertake a project with support from their supervisor.

The Autumn Semester consists of three core modules, plus ONE optional module.

During the Spring Semester, you will undertake two core modules, plus TWO optional modules.

International Human Resource Management Project:

Upon successful completion of the taught modules you will undertake the International Human Resource Management Project.

The purpose of the project is to provide you with the opportunity to test the applicability of your new learning while under close supervision. It introduces you to the methodology of research, the systematic analysis of ideas, the problems of data collection and the presentation of ideas in a clear way. A further aim is to enable you to apply the knowledge, understanding, methodologies and skills learnt in the taught modules to individual independent research under academic supervision.

It also requires reflection on the implications for professional practice from an ethical, professional and continuous professional development standpoint.

Methods of teaching

Most modules involve a mixture of lectures and small group teaching (called classes, seminars, workshops or tutorials).

In a lecture, the lecturer will mainly be giving an overview of a particular aspect of the module content (as well as opportunities for you to ask questions and be reflective), while in classes and workshops you will have an opportunity to practice techniques, discuss ideas, apply concepts and consolidate your understanding in the topic

Support

You will be allocated a personal tutor at the beginning of your studies. Normally, your personal tutor will teach on your own degree course and you will keep the same personal tutor throughout your course.

Your personal tutor will be able to give you advice on academic issues, including module choice and assessment. If you encounter any problems which affect your studies, your personal tutor should always be your first point of contact; she/he will be able to put you in touch with the wide range of expert student support services provided by the University and the Students' Union as appropriate. You are required to meet with your personal tutor at three points during each academic year but you are also encouraged to get in touch with them at any other point if you need help or advice.

For day-to-day information, the staff of our Postgraduate Student Hub are available, in person, by telephone or by email, from 8am to 6pm each weekday during term time to answer your questions.

Feedback

We’ll provide you with regular feedback on your work. This comes in a variety of formats including oral feedback, personalised feedback on written work, and generic written feedback.

You will be given general feedback in relation to examinations following all examination periods and you will be able to discuss your overall performance with your personal tutor.

When undertaking the dissertation/project you are expected to meet regularly with your supervisor to review progress and discuss any questions. Your supervisor will be able to provide feedback on your research plan and drafts of your work as you progress.

Assessment

Assessment methods vary from module to module but, across your degree scheme as a whole, you can expect a mixture of exams, coursework, essays, practical work, presentations, and individual and group projects.

The programme is run by King's College London Department of Physiology. It provides a theoretical and practical basis for explaining the functioning of the muscular, respiratory and cardiovascular systems at rest and during exercise. This extends to the effects of extreme environmental conditions on whole body physiology. Programme topics are studied from both systemic and cellular/molecular perspectives in order that students have a good understanding of the breadth of investigative approaches employed in human physiology research.

The programme provides a thorough grounding in modern approaches to the understanding of the genetics of disease alongside the cutting-edge research methods and techniques used to advance our understanding of development of disease. Students develop their knowledge and understanding of genetics of human diseases through a combination of lectures, seminars, tutorials, presentations and journal clubs. Careers

Advanced training in genetic techniques including bioinformatic and statistical approaches positions graduates well for PhD studentships in laboratories using genetic techniques to examine diseases such as heart disease, cancer and neurological disorders. Another large group will seek research jobs in the pharmaceutical industry, or jobs related to genetics in healthcare organisations.

Employability
The MSc in Genetics of Human Disease facilitates acquisition of knowledge and skills relevant to a career in research in many different biomedical disciplines. About half of our graduates enter a research career by undertaking and completing PhDs and working as research associates/scientists in academia. Some of our graduates go on to jobs in the pharmaceutical industry, while others enter careers with clinical genetic diagnosis services, particularly in molecular genetics, in healthcare organisations and hospitals around the world. Degree information

Students develop the ability to generate, assess and synthesise empirical evidence and hypotheses related to human evolution and behaviour. They gain subject-specific skills, such as measuring skeletal material, interpreting and generating data related to human ecology, reproduction and genetics, and generating behavioural data of humans and non-human primates through observation.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits. The programme consists of one core module (15 credits), five optional modules (75 credits), and a research dissertation (90 credits).

All MSc students undertake an independent research project which culminates in a 15,000-word dissertation.

Teaching and learning
The programme is delivered through a combination of lectures including weekly two-hour departmental seminars, and occasional attendance at non-departmental seminars. Assessment is through take-home examination, essays, lab-books, practical tests, and presentation. The dissertation is assessed by a project presentation and the thesis.

Careers

Many graduates are successful in entering fully funded doctoral programmes based on their training and achievements on the programme. Our graduates also go not o work in the media (TV, radio , publishing), in NGOs (community development, nature conservation), government organisations (national statistics, health programmes), in zoos and museums (overseeing collections, co-ordination research), or become school teachers. Employability
Graduates of the programme will be trained in the fundamentals of scientific inquiry including hypothesis generation, data collection and statistical analysis, data synthesis and reporting of results. Structure

The Programme is taught from September to June and gives you a thorough grounding in all aspects of Human Resource Management.

You will study eight compulsory modules and complete a project.

The Programme is offered in full-time mode and lasts 12 months. You will take eight modules, each of which is worth 15 credits.

Reflective logs:

You will be required to maintain a reflective log which will record aspects of your learning during the MSc programme. During the programme you will develop study skills, personal effectiveness skills and specific HR skills and write reflective accounts detailing how these skills will be used and developed. The reflection will be used to help you identify links between the different modules and develop the range of skills required to operate successfully in an HR role.

The reflective logs are a requirement of the course and must be completed to an acceptable standard before you can complete the MSc programme.

Upon successful completion of the taught stage you will progress to the project. The purpose of the project is to provide you with the opportunity to test the applicability of the knowledge, understanding, methodologies and skills learnt in the taught modules in a piece of independent research with the benefit of individual academic supervision. It will introduce you to the methodology of research, the systematic analysis of ideas, the problems of data collection and the presentation of ideas in a clear way. It also requires reflection on the implications for professional practice from an ethical, professional and continuous professional development standpoint.

Methods of teaching

Most modules involve a mixture of lectures and small group teaching (called classes, seminars, workshops or tutorials).

In a lecture, the lecturer will mainly be giving an overview of a particular aspect of the module content (as well as opportunities for you to ask questions and be reflective), while in classes and workshops you will have an opportunity to practice techniques, discuss ideas, apply concepts and consolidate your understanding in the topic

Support

You will be allocated a personal tutor at the beginning of your studies. Normally, your personal tutor will teach on your own degree course and you will keep the same personal tutor throughout your course.

Your personal tutor will be able to give you advice on academic issues, including module choice and assessment. If you encounter any problems which affect your studies, your personal tutor should always be your first point of contact; she/he will be able to put you in touch with the wide range of expert student support services provided by the University and the Students' Union as appropriate. You are required to meet with your personal tutor at three points during each academic year but you are also encouraged to get in touch with them at any other point if you need help or advice.

For day-to-day information, the staff of our Postgraduate Student Hub are available, in person, by telephone or by email, from 8am to 6pm each weekday during term time to answer your questions.

Feedback

We’ll provide you with regular feedback on your work. This comes in a variety of formats including oral feedback, personalised feedback on written work, and generic written feedback.

You will be given general feedback in relation to examinations following all examination periods and you will be able to discuss your overall performance with your personal tutor.

When undertaking the dissertation/project you are expected to meet regularly with your supervisor to review progress and discuss any questions. Your supervisor will be able to provide feedback on your research plan and drafts of your work as you progress.

Assessment

Assessment methods vary from module to module but, across your degree scheme as a whole, you can expect a mixture of exams, coursework, essays, practical work, presentations, and individual and group projects.

As of September 2013 CIPD and AHRI (Australian Human Resources Institute) have announced mutual recognition of professional membership for individuals holding corresponding professional grades of membership. This means that members joining under counterpart organisation (either the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development or the Australian Human Resources Institute) will have their existing credentials recognised, providing access to the equivalent grade of professional membership.

People are at the heart of any successful business. Ensuring their personal fulfilment and creating a happy workforce is the key to a successful, sustainable and prosperous business. By focusing on the development of your professional and interpersonal skills, this HR Management course helps you to understand and critically evaluate current, individual and organisational practices within different contexts so that you can provide solutions that add value to organisations.

You will study a range of human resources topics and develop your skills as an HR practitioner, as well as studying some general business and management subjects designed to develop your strategic business awareness and leadership potential. Through a choice of options you will be given the opportunity to specialise in specific areas of HRM, such as Employment Relations, Employment Law and Coaching in the Workplace.

This Human Resources Management degree is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD). Students who successfully complete all elements will meet the knowledge criteria needed to become a Chartered Member of the CIPD (provided you become a student member whilst on the course). We also provide support for those students with extensive experience in their application to become a fully Chartered Member. Employers increasingly regard the CIPD qualification as a measure of capability and added value so this qualification will put you well ahead of other graduates in the job market as across the globe.

Course Delivery

This course is designed to fit in with existing commitments. Attendance is flexible – either one afternoon and one evening or two evenings per week (preference must be registered in advance). You can attend either Monday and Wednesday 5-9pm or Wednesday 1-9pm. A considerable amount of pre-reading is expected for the taught sessions, as directed by the programme tutors. You are also expected to work within learning sets and prepare drafts of written work to circulate and discuss with student colleagues. Overall, you can expect to spend approximately 8-15 hours of independent study per week outside the classroom.

Module Details

The initial emphasis is on putting the foundations into place: developing understanding of the functions and tools of management such as finance, operations management and, of course, HRM. There is also the need to appreciate the importance of an organisation's external environment, which as the course highlights, is international. In addition, weekly tutorials will help you understand the requirements of studying in the UK at postgraduate level.

Here are the units you will study:

Developing People for Business: This focuses initially on HR and professional skills including finance, statistics and information systems.HR skills include effective self-management, effective management in practice, influencing people and ethical practices. Following on from that, theoretical approaches to leadership, change management practice and culture are also considered.

Managing Human Resources: This aims to develop your critical awareness of the conflicts and ambiguities associated with added value professional roles, ethics and legal compliance. You will explore the contribution made by the professional training and/or human resource development function to the efficient operation of an organisation.

The International HR Practitioner: This initially considers the key theories underpinning business strategy and HRM in an international context. The unit considers how strategic human resource management can impact on the strategic processes driving organisations in an increasingly globalised environment. In the latter part of the unit the focus moves on to considering the relationship between strategic management and international HRM.

Research Project: The dissertation should be of value to you in your career and therefore should be strategic in nature. Where appropriate, it could also be of significance to a sponsoring organisation. It should demonstrate the ability to integrate theory and practice, as well as your capacity to manage and present (in written form) a substantial piece of work-based, in-depth research. A supervisor will be allocated to guide you through the research.

Programme Assessment

Our learning approach is active, participative, reflective and student-centred. You will be encouraged to develop a strategic awareness and appreciate the role of the HR professional as a business partner. We combine a variety of teaching methods including seminars, lectures, case studies, class discussions and group work.

Assessment differs from unit to unit, but all consist of varying forms of coursework alongside a time-constrained assessment. You will also complete a 15,000 word dissertation on a topic of your choice.
