Environmental changes, ageing populations, the media and new technologies, asylum and migration, intergenerational justice, complex multilevel governance arrangements, the impact of trade and investment, poverty and inequalities, the rise of identity politics and the changing nature of the personal sphere are contemporary global challenges facing human rights calling into question the fundamental tenets of human rights law both in terms of its formulation and implementation through policy development and law-making.

Differentiated from existing LLMs, the LLM Human Rights explicitly focuses on these contemporary challenges and how best to respond to them though law, policy and practice. The Human Rights programme draws on the research strengths in the College of Law and Criminology, but also from other colleges, in its teaching; and, exploits strong relationships with external partners to integrate a distinctive applied focus to the Human Rights programme.

Key Features

Students pursuing the LLM Human Rights will benefit from a programme designed around high calibre research and impact in human rights. Human Rights students will also benefit from academics' strong relationships with external partners working in the field of human rights, giving the programme a distinctive approach centred on the implementation and application of human rights.

The focus on implementation and practice in human rights is complemented by a multidisciplinary approach. Human rights policy and practice often do not recognise disciplinary divides. The Human Rights programme allows students to experience teaching from other disciplines to enhance their knowledge and understanding of human rights as an integrated project (e.g. politics and international development).

Uniquely the Human Rights programme addresses diverse challenges in human rights faced by law and policy, and by practitioners at the global, regional, State and sub-State levels. The approach focuses on how these challenges might be effectively managed through law and policy. The Human Rights programme offers:

- The opportunity and choice to address a range of human rights topics and challenges across a number of thematic areas, with teaching by expert researchers in the field.
- A multidisciplinary approach reflecting the reality of human rights in practice.
- A practical and practice focused philosophy.

Modules

The LLM Human Rights is a modular programme, with students required to accumulate 180 credits to graduate. In appropriate circumstances a student may graduate with a merit or distinction. Each programme is divided into two parts:

Part I consists of 3 taught modules, each 20 credits. Students will be required to undertake 2 compulsory modules, these are: International Human Rights Law and Human Rights and Humanitarian Intervention. Students are also required to select 1 further optional 20 credit taught module from a range of available modules (see below for examples optional modules).

Part II gives students a choice of 3 optional modules, each 20 credits, from a range of available modules (see below for examples optional modules).

Students of LLM in Human Rights are also required to undertake a dissertation, which contributes 60 credits.

Extra-curricular Activities

Throughout their studies Human Rights students are provided with the opportunity to take part in a number of extra-curricular activities to enhance their practical understanding of human rights. These include:

Guest lectures by expert practitioners in human rights.

Workplace learning through voluntary work and/or placement.
Involvement in collaborative research projects with research partners.
Engagement with the College’s projects focussed on practical implementation and impact from research (e.g. Cyberterrorism Project, Wales Observatory, Centre for Environment, and the Sex Work Consortium).

The LLM Human Rights will open the door to a range of careers, including:

- Human rights institutions: increasingly international and regional human rights institutions are seeking to support, monitor and influence State policy and social arrangements. Potential graduate destinations include: the United Nations and the Council of Europe as well as other regional institutions.
- The public sector, including government at all levels. Potential graduate destinations include: civil service, regional, national and sub-national government, local authorities and other public bodies, and, political and policy advice work.
- The private sector: human rights are increasingly the concern of the private sector in the realm of socially responsible capitalism. Potential graduate destinations include: global business (including institutions such as the World Bank); the business sector (from large scale business such as the banking sector, to smaller concerns seeking to appeal to the ethical consumer).
- The NGO sector: non-governmental agencies are well-established stakeholders in human rights. Potential graduate destinations include: international NGOS (e.g. UNICEF); regional or local level NGOS.
- Research and academia: research on human rights is a well-established concern for academia.

Queen’s Law School has more than 25 years’ experience in delivering an LLM in Human Rights Law. Throughout that period it has constantly reviewed and revised what it offers as part of the degree, shifting the content from time to time depending on the human rights issues that are most prominent and on the expertise of staff available to teach the various subjects. For the re-structured LLM starting in September 2015 we will be harnessing as much of our joint expertise as possible to provide a vibrant and relevant course which will stimulate the hearts as well as the minds of students who are taking it. The focus will remain on international human rights law (including at regional levels in Europe, Africa and the Americas) but there will be concentration as well on the practice of human rights, especially in the contexts of discrimination, armed conflicts, terrorism and migration.

The protection of human rights at the international level is a relatively new branch of law. Since World War Two there has been a huge growth in the number and variety of human rights standards set out in international treaties and in other so-called ‘soft law’ documents. The problem is that these standards are not always fully implemented and the international mechanisms for trying to get them implemented are defective. This LLM provide students with an opportunity to gain an in-depth appreciation of what has gone right and what has gone wrong and to suggest ways in which human rights could be protected more effectively so that human beings everywhere can realise their full potential.

The programme is delivered through a series of taught modules and culminates in the submission of a dissertation on an original topic.

The programme is interdisciplinary thus building on the strengths in this area of the Sutherland School of Law and the School of Politics and International Relations. Your studies

The Sutherland School of Law offers a wide range of modules for the Masters programmes. Reflecting its interdisciplinary nature, there are core modules that must be taken in both Law and Politics. The core law modules are

- International Human Rights considers the theoretical underpinnings and development of contemporary international human rights law, critically examines the institutional architecture developed by the UN system and regional systems to implement human rights norms as well as national methods of implementation of human rights law.

You’ll study

The Human Rights Law programme may be completed over two years (part-time), or over one year (full-time).

The LLM is awarded on successful completion of six modules and a 15,000-word dissertation on a topic chosen in consultation with a supervisor.

Successful completion of six modules will qualify you for the award of Postgraduate Diploma (PgDip). A Postgraduate Certificate (PgCert) is awarded on completion of three modules.

- Dissertation
The dissertation is written over the summer and submitted on the last day of the academic year.

- Field dissertation
A recent innovative feature of this programme is the opportunity for you to undertake a field dissertation within a governmental or non-governmental organisation with an international focus. It can be either in the UK, or more likely, overseas.
This opportunity is offered on a competitive basis and typically lasts for up to 12 weeks. It's delivered through our partnership with Challenges Worldwide, an organisation with extensive international experience in volunteer work placements.
Work completed for the placement will focus on a specific area of law relevant to, or actually form the subject of your dissertation.
LLM students on the programme have travelled to countries such as India, Guatemala and Uganda to undertake projects in areas including right to water, law reform, developing sexual harassment policy and freedom of assembly.
The University of Strathclyde provides comprehensive travel and health insurance for all participants in the Field Dissertation. We also pay for the costs of your placement. Students are responsible for the costs of flights, visas, and accommodation and living expenses while overseas. Such costs have tended to be in the region of £1,500 to £2,500 per student.

Our library has a wide range of law reports, legislation, serials and monographs. It also has duplicate sets of key law report series, houses extensive collections in government publications and other related areas.

Learning & teaching

This course is taught mainly through face-to-face teaching. Each class is delivered through two-hour weekly seminars, which students are required to attend.
Full-time students are required to take three modules per semester, with part-time students taking three modules over two semesters. The face-to-face seminars will normally be held in the evening from 6pm to 8pm. A few classes may be held during the day.
The teaching and extra-curriculum activities on the LLM are supported by the Law School’s Centre for the Study of Human Rights.

In addition to regular Law School staff, external staff teach on the programme including:
- Alan Miller, the current Chair of the Scottish Human Rights Commission
-Tony Kelly, a prolific human rights lawyer

Both are visiting professors in the Law School. Our faculty also includes experts in human rights and transitional justice, immigration law, equality, employment and labour law.

Assessment

Classes will be assessed by a mixture of written exams, presentations and course work comprising research essays typically of 3,500-4000 words. There will be two-hour weekly seminars for each class. Although coordinated by a tutor these will be student-led and interactive.

Careers

Our graduates can, and have progressed to research studies like MPhil and PhD in Human Rights Law leading to an academic career.
Students may also go on to work with international non-governmental organisations in the area of human rights advocacy, practice and promotion like Amnesty International.

Overview

This course offers an exciting opportunity to study human rights in the interdisciplinary context of law, politics and philosophy. The course content reflects that human rights is one of the key discourses of our times. The course is aimed both at people working in related fields (for example, professionals working in the fields of law, government and public sector, social services, human resource management, or human rights advocacy), and anyone else interested in further study in this area.

- The course is taught on a semesterised basis. Course content combines analysis of current human rights law and practices with a critical exploration of the structures, potential, and limits of law and legal reform, at the domestic, European, and international levels.

- The focus on ‘Globalisation and Justice’ emphasises the contemporary and interdisciplinary nature of the course. We do not aim at a simple endorsement of the discourse, but at a set of critical reflections that draw upon varied global and local human rights philosophies, policies and practice.

- Postgraduate students will find a range of support structures, including: research training; accessible staff supervisors; good library resources; access to postgraduate study rooms; and access to IT and legal research tools.

- This course builds on existing strengths of the Law School and SPIRE in research and teaching. Both Schools are committed to maintaining our teaching at the highest standard. Law and SPIRE are both highly regarded in their subject areas with international reputations for teaching and research. Course Aims

- This Masters programme aims to enable students to develop strong practical and theoretical understandings of human rights law, politics and philosophy at domestic, regional and international levels.

- The course also aims to provide students with a set of critical reflections that draw upon the varied global and local social and political contexts in which human rights operates.

- The course aims to develop not only subject-specific knowledge and skills, but also transferable skills. In terms of the latter, particular attention is paid to research and analytical skills. The course also aims to provide a foundation for pursuing further study at doctoral level.

- Course content combines analysis of current human rights law and practices with a critical exploration of the structures, potential, and limits of law and legal reform at the domestic, European, and international levels.

Course Content

The programme consists of 3 core modules and 5 elective modules. Students taking the MA in Human Rights, Globalisation and Justice write 8 module essays and a dissertation of between 15,000-20,000 words.

The MA requires 180 credits, made up of taught modules (120 credits) and a 60-credit dissertation. The modules are taught between September and April, and the dissertation is submitted in the following September.

Students who prefer not to undertake a dissertation may conclude their studies with a Postgraduate Diploma, if they achieve 120 credits by taking 7-8 taught modules.

Teaching & Assessment

Assessment of taught modules is normally by means of coursework. This requires a written assignment of 2,000-3,000 words for each module. The pass mark is 50% and students must pass each of the modules in order to progress to the dissertation.

Additional Costs

Modules across the programme will include recommended core and supplemental texts. Costs will vary depending on the particular text (Law textbooks vary between £20-40).

Apart from additional costs for text books, inter-library loans and potential overdue library fines we do not anticipate any additional costs for this post graduate programme.

Research Skills for the HR Professional: This unit provides you with the opportunity to demonstrate the ability to identify a complex organisational issue from a human resource perspective. The unit content will equip you to explore and critically evaluate academic and practitioner sources of knowledge.

The International HR Practitioner: This unit aims to encourage the development of a critical understanding of HR theory and practice from an international perspective through evaluating leading edge research and practice.

The work placement is a key element related to some of the units studied. Our Placements Office will support you in maintaining and developing business contacts, advise you of vacancies and help you prepare for interviews and other selection methods.

Research Methods and Dissertation: For the dissertation, you will be allocated a supervisor who will support you to plan, research and write a 15,000-word proposal and dissertation. Your dissertation subject choice will determine whether the final award is MSc Human Resource Management or MSc Human Resource Development.

Programme Assessment

A combination of teaching methods is adopted, including lectures, case studies and group work. You will be expected to read in preparation and to make an active contribution to class discussions. The teaching team include staff actively engaged in Human Resource Management/Human Resource Development research and those with practitioner experience.

You will study five core units over the first two terms. In the third term, you will complete a dissertation, giving you the opportunity to analyse an international human resource management issue in depth.

- Globalisation and Employment Relations
You will gain a broad overview of some of the major areas of international human resource management and employment relations policy within multinational companies (MNCs). These policy areas will be examined within the context of frameworks for understanding MNC strategies and structures, as well as competing arguments about the impact of national and regional differences upon international HRM.

- Managing Across Borders - Contemporary Challenges
National borders continue to matter. Even within regions which have removed formal barriers to the flow of goods, finance, labour, and knowledge, a variety of differences (institutional, legal, cultural, identity, and so forth), albeit not static, exist between, and within, countries. These multi-level, multi-dimensional differences shape the contexts of ongoing transnational operations and reorganizational programmes. You will focus on the unique managerial challenges and differences between and within, that countries create for companies’ operation in multiple countries.

- International and Comparative Employment Law
You will critically evaluate national and regional differences in the regulation of labour, and their implications for international human resource management practitioners. This unit focuses on the nature of the employment contract in comparative perspective, as well as specific areas such as discrimination, recruitment and termination law.

- Organisational Learning, Change and Innovation
You will examine how organisations learn, create and utilise knowledge and respond to the competitive pressures in a globalising knowledge-based economy. This unit focuses on the interactive relationships between societal institutions and the micro-dynamics of organizational learning and innovation.

- Strategic International Human Resource Management
You will gain an understanding of the major current themes and debates in the field going beyond operational approaches to managing people and focusing on core international HR issues and functions at the strategic level. It emphases on the integration of organisational strategy and IHRM, and explores how the issues and problems in managing a global workforce can be conceived strategically and operationalized through organisation practice.

- European Employment Relations
You will explore how the European Union and other regional groupings affects the development of employment relations across the member states. Employment relations are generally studied comparatively - for example, in the 'varieties of capitalism' literature - or through the lens of multinational companies, in terms of how HR practices may or may not transfer across borders.

The regional level examines areas such as free trade areas, common markets and currency unions and how the process of economic integration has shaped its institutional development and how it has influenced pressures to harmonise employment policy and individual EU employment policies – such as equal opportunities, health and safety, employee participation and corporate social responsibility – and assesses whether these function in the interests of business competitiveness or not in relation to the rest of the world.

- Dissertation Preparation and Research Methods
This unit helps prepare you for your dissertation. You will recognise and critically evaluate approaches to management research and the assumptions upon which they are based. This will equip you to make justified choices as to appropriate quantitative/qualitative research methods for data collection and subsequent analysis. You will then be able to conduct research, and evaluate primary and secondary data sources in a systematic and critically reflective manner.You will also evaluate potential limitations to research investigation and applications and develop a coherent and appropriate research proposal, recognising the ethical implications of research investigations and their impact upon findings.

- Dissertation
This is an excellent opportunity to analyse a particular international human resource management issue in depth. By the end of the dissertation, you will be able to plan and manage a project, define aims and objectives, identify appropriate data sources and collection methods, be aware of and deal with potential pitfalls, execute a dissertation plan, and construct an effective argument.

On completion of the course graduates will have:

John has recently been working on a UN-funded project to combat violence against women in Uganda, Cambodia and Nepal. He authored 'Acid Violence in Uganda: A Situational Analysis', helping develop a co-ordinated action plan to address the problem, which was presented to the government and legal, health and social services.

Overview

Our high quality and distinctive programme is designed for those wishing to pursue in-depth academic study in the field of human resource management and associated disciplines, with a view to working, researching or teaching in the subject area. Keele Management School is a main provider of Human Resource Management and Industrial Relations courses and research in the UK. Students on this course come from a wide range of backgrounds and disciplines and from all around the world. The teaching team is active in research and publication, focusing on international and national employment and equalities aspects of public policy, spanning both private and public sectors and typically featuring high levels of engagement with employers, trade unions and government bodies.

This programme provides a thorough understanding of the employment relationship and an excellent grounding in the theory and practice of human resource and labour management. It locates these through historically informed treatment of the subject area, examining key institutions, problems and issues in contemporary human resource management and employment relations. The main focus is on the UK but this is set within a broader comparative perspective, enabling an assessment of contrasting systems of employment relations and an evaluation of a range of crucial issues on a European and global scale.
