The two-year Master's programme is meant for students who are fascinated by the complexity of human movement. You will study human movement from multiple perspectives, using theories from Medicine, Biology, Mathematics and Behavioural Sciences.

In this programme, you will acquire an advanced theoretical understanding of human movement. You will also gain research skills and professional skills, learning to apply your knowledge in a practical setting.

The programme has two central themes. In 'motor function and cognition in healthy ageing' you will explore how physical activity and innovative solutions can prevent chronic diseases, and preserve cognitive function. You will also study slow aging. In 'rehabilitation and functional recovery' you will improve your understanding of impaired movement and the restoration of functioning in rehabilitation practices.

It is possible to do a crossover between the Master's programmes in Human Movement Sciences and Sport Sciences.

PROGRAMME OVERVIEW

In the first semester of the programme, graduates from a range of backgrounds are brought up-to-speed on core knowledge in engineering, biology and research practice.

This is followed by specialist modules in the second semester on human movement analysis, prostheses, implants, physiological measurements and rehabilitation, as well as numerous computer methods applied across the discipline.

The course makes use of different approaches to teaching, including traditional lectures and tutorials, off-site visits to museums and hospitals, and lab work (particularly in the Human Movement and Instrumentation modules).

The core lecturing team is supplemented by leading figures from hospitals and industry.

This programme is studied full-time over one academic year and part-time over two academic years. It consists of eight taught modules and a research project.

All modules are taught on the University main campus, with the exception of visits to the health care industry (e.g. commercial companies and NHS hospitals). The course aims:
-To educate engineering, physical science, life science, medical and paramedical graduates in the broad base of knowledge required for a Biomedical Engineering career in industry, healthcare or research in the United Kingdom, Europe and the rest of the world
-To underpin the knowledge base with a wide range of practical sessions including laboratory/experimental work and applied visits to expert health care facilities and biomedical engineering industry

This course is designed for people who have prior dance experience and professonional or volunteering experience with people in need, and would like to practise as a dance movement psychotherapist.

Dance movement psychotherapy is a relational process in which a client and therapist engage in an empathetic creative process using body movement and dance to assist the integration of emotional, cognitive, physical, social and spiritual aspects of self. We believe that focusing on the creative potential of individuals in a relationship creates a sound ethical basis for psychotherapeutic work.

You will be taught by leading experts who will equip you with the skills, experience, and confidence to work as a dance movement psychotherapist. All graduating students are eligible to apply for registration with the Association for Dance Movement Psychotherapy (ADMP UK). Graduates often create their own positions; facilitating dance movement psychotherapy sessions within settings including: social services; special needs; schools; psychiatry; probationary and rehabilitation units; forensic psychiatry.

The course offers opportunities for you to explore and expand movement preferences, ways of interacting with others, belief systems, prejudices and values. Emphasis is placed on development of your own style as a dance movement psychotherapist. You also have the opportunity to perform and exhibit your ongoing work in a yearly Arts Therapies exhibition.

The MA in DMP benefits from cutting edge research conducted through the Centre for Arts Therapies Research (CATR) and this feeds directly into teaching. The programme ethos emphasises a critical consideration of different descriptions and explanations of bodies, human systems and therapeutic practices in different places and times. In the context of an individual student's experiences, beliefs, values and different 'cultures', our teaching actively promotes a participatory ethic, self-reflexive practices and the ability for critical reflection on: creative processes, intersubjectivity and the construction of social and power differentials, in learning and in psychotherapy.

Content

The uniquely interdisciplinary MA course in Dance Movement Psychotherapy integrates theoretical, experiential and clinical learning, preparing students to practice as dance movement psychotherapists. Cutting edge research cascades into teaching emphasising the social, biological and psychological construction of the moving body and meaning-making. Students are encouraged to develop a self-reflexive practice and the ability for critical reflection on creative processes.

Key areas of study include Contemporary DMP and psychotherapeutic theories, Feminist embodied reflexivity, clinical placement and supervision (for one-two days a week), dance movement improvisation skills and interventions, embodied performance practice, experiential anatomy for clinical practice, human development, movement and growth, Laban Movement Analysis and video observation.

Embodied practice and working with attention to the art of dance is placed at the centre of the programme. Drawing from Feminist, Psychoanalytical, Phenomenological and Systemic frameworks, the training emphasises the creative role of curiosity and a 'not knowing' position, a respect for difference, and appreciation of the effects that mutual influences have in all relationships.

The course deals with political developments in the UK, in Europe and internationally, and explores the extent to which human rights are enshrined in and supported by deeper politics and culture, and by institutions, structures, movements and values.

This programme aims to provide you with further knowledge of the scientific concepts and procedures underpinning sport and exercise related musculoskeletal function, measurement, injury and treatment.

The programme will allow you to adopt a multidisciplinary approach to the scientific study of sport and exercise related musculoskeletal health and performance including anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, bioengineering, and kinesiology. You will have the opportunity to carry out in-depth and critical research in selected areas of interest.

Core study areas include orthopaedic biomechanics, neuromuscular function, physiology of exercise and sport, immediate and pre-hospital care of the injured athlete, research methods for sport and exercise, basic science and regenerative therapy, emerging technologies for health and wellbeing, motion analysis of human movement, developing computer models for sports biomechanics, sports injury, and a research project.

The programme is run by King's College London Department of Physiology. It provides a theoretical and practical basis for explaining the functioning of the muscular, respiratory and cardiovascular systems at rest and during exercise. Sport rehabilitation research is consistently focused on improving athletic performance and reducing injury risk. Therefore our course focuses on building the knowledge and skills to implement rehabilitation programmes that return athletes to optimum fitness.

You will have access to our partner Saracen Rugby's nearby Allianz Park stadium where you will use our world-class performance laboratories, rehabilitation units and testing facilities. You will also have the opportunity to gain experience in the sport and exercise environment through a work placement.

Employability – Students who have completed sports degrees with Middlesex have gone on to work in organisations such as professional football and rugby clubs, national sport federations and independent private practices.

Expert staff - Our staff are all highly trained professionals who each offer a wealth of industry experience. As part of the course we are also developing close links with Saracens Rugby in the area of sport rehabilitation and performance recovery as well as musculoskeletal screening.

Facilities – In 2013, Middlesex University opened its brand new sport and exercise science facilities nearby at Allianz Park. As part of an exciting new venture with Saracens Rugby who are based at Allianz Park, you will use the latest state-of-the-art equipment including a human movement lab, a health and injury clinic and a human performance lab.

The two-year Master's programme is meant for students with a scientific fascination for sport. You will study athletic behaviour from multiple perspectives, using theories about cognition, psychology and physiology.

As a student of this programme, you will acquire an advanced understanding of issues in the field of sport sciences, both applied and fundamental. You will practice in measuring and analyzing sports performance and gain familiarity with research methods and advanced statistics. Also, you will learn to develop optimal programmes to teach and train sport-related abilities and skills.

The programme is concentrated around four research areas. The first centres on physical activity, sports and cognition in children. The second deals with talent identification and development. Perception, action and decision making in sports is the third area. And in the fourth, you learn about performance analysis and optimization in sports.

It is possible to do a crossover between the Master's programmes in Sport Sciences and Human Movement Sciences.

Work consists of hands-on laboratory and field techniques, theoretical modelling and computer simulation of human movement, as well as critical analysis, discussion and presentation of research projects.

This is an end-on programme suitable for students from a field where a fundamental grasp of mechanics has been displayed, and with an interest in applying this knowledge to the sports research arena.

Kinesiology’s research is focused on the biosciences; psychological, socio-cultural, managerial and philosophical aspects of human performance, recreation and sport; and personal and community health and wellness. Topics range from exploring the processes underlying human movement to investigating volunteerism at national events, and assessing human factors and ergonomics in industry.

UNB leads the province in health and wellness research through collaboration with groups such as The Stan Cassidy Centre for Rehabilitation, Horizon Health, various sport and recreation agencies and governmental departments. Our Community Outreach Programs provide opportunities for inter-disciplinary and collaborative research. We generally have about 50-60 students who have use of the Andrew & Marjorie McCain Human Performance Lab, Motor Control Lab, Occupational Therapy Lab, and the Exercise Physiology Lab.
