The two-year Master's programme is meant for students who are fascinated by the complexity of human movement. You will study human movement from multiple perspectives, using theories from Medicine, Biology, Mathematics and Behavioural Sciences.

In this programme, you will acquire an advanced theoretical understanding of human movement. You will also gain research skills and professional skills, learning to apply your knowledge in a practical setting.

The programme has two central themes. In 'motor function and cognition in healthy ageing' you will explore how physical activity and innovative solutions can prevent chronic diseases, and preserve cognitive function. You will also study slow aging. In 'rehabilitation and functional recovery' you will improve your understanding of impaired movement and the restoration of functioning in rehabilitation practices.

It is possible to do a crossover between the Master's programmes in Human Movement Sciences and Sport Sciences.

Course structure

Students normally study three one-week modules each year, typically separated by eight to twelve weeks. You can choose all podiatry options or include interdisciplinary options which may require you to attend one day per week rather than the week-long study block structure of podiatry.

To be awarded the Podiatry MSc, you must successfully complete three compulsory modules, plus three options and a dissertation. Alternatively, you can study individual modules, being awarded a PGDip on completion of six modules, or a PGCert on completion of three specified modules.

The course is delivered in a variety of ways, typically via e-learning, lectures, seminars, simulation in our high-tech Human Movement Laboratory, and practice-based learning in our Leaf Hospital.

Leaf Hospital:

You will have access to the Leaf Hospital in Eastbourne, our own fully-staffed clinical facility, which offers a podiatry service and a private practice physiotherapy service. This gives you a further opportunity to gain practical experience treating patients throughout your degree.

The Leaf Hospital has two main clinics and three further consulting rooms, allowing up to 28 patients to be seen at any one time. Clinical practice is supported by a complete range of diagnostic and therapeutic equipment, including gait analysis, imaging and more.

You will benefit from use of the orthotics department, where you will produce high quality orthotics and insoles for patients as part of the practical element of your course.

On the first floor there is a fully equipped operating theatre for minor surgical procedures and a human anatomy lab where you will study prosection and take part in lower limb dissection.

Human Movement Laboratory:

The Human Movement Laboratory is used widely by our physiotherapy, occupational therapy and podiatry students, and is also used for commercial consultancy.

In the lab you will use the latest technology to measure and assess all aspects of human movement, joints, muscles, soft tissue structure and nerves. The laboratory has equipment for conducting cardio-pulmonary investigations including Cosmed metabolic system and spirometry.

Human Movement Laboratory:

The high-tech Human Movement Laboratory is used widely in teaching and research for students in the school of health professions studying physiotherapy, occupational therapy and podiatry, and is also used for commercial consultancy.

In the lab you will use the latest technology to measure and assess all aspects of human movement, joints, muscles, soft tissue structure and nerves. The laboratory has state-of-the-art equipment for conducting cardio-pulmonary investigations including Cosmed metabolic system and spirometry.

Course structure

A flexible modular framework normally involves six one-week study blocks at the university.

To be awarded the MSc you need to complete three core modules, three education modules and a relevant dissertation. The dissertation may be based on research carried out either in the university or in another suitable environment.

The course is delivered in a variety of ways, typically via e-learning, lectures, seminars, workbooks for work-based learning and simulation in our high-tech Human Movement Laboratory, and Clinical Skills and Simulation Rooms.

Assessment is via the method most appropriate to your chosen modules.

It is ideal for graduates with related first degrees who wish to gain both a professional and academic qualification and start a career in this challenging and highly rewarding field.

This accelerated course is taught with the innovative problem-based learning approach, with an emphasis on practical application of skills and knowledge. Through this balance of theory and practice experience you will graduate a capable and confident physiotherapist.

Course structure

This intensive programme runs over 45 weeks per year, for two years. Your time on the course will be balanced between campus-based study and clinical practice.

The course begins in February and consists of six campus-based modules and five practice modules. Year 1 is mainly campus-based and year 2 predominantly involves practice placements alongside the campus-based Research Dissertation Studies.

The course is delivered in a variety of ways, typically via problem-based tutorials, subject specialist resource sessions, skills workshops, and simulation in our high-tech Human Movement Laboratory, and Clinical Skills and Simulation Rooms.

Completion of the Project Studies module and the submission of a dissertation lead to the masters award.

Clinical Skills and Simulation Suite:

Our Clinical Skills and Simulation Suite is among the best equipped in the country, and is an invaluable tool for assessment and monitoring students' progress throughout the course.

You will benefit from practising nursing skills in an environment that simulates real-life professional experiences. Provided by the NHS’ South East Coast Ambulance Service, you may have access to our Simbulance, enabling you to work alongside paramedic students in an interprofessional learning environment. On board is a high fidelity mannikin with multiple uses, and a child-size mannikin for paediatric scenarios.

Learning by simulation means you will be confident in your ability to apply your knowledge and skills in your professional life.

Problem-based learning

Our educational philosophy mirrors the philosophy of occupational therapy. We believe that an individual's positive engagement in learning activity leads to advanced productivity, increased perception of self-worth, improved quality of life and enjoyment of the course.

Our occupational therapy courses use problem-based learning (PBL), a technique recommended by authorities around the world. All subjects covered are integrated around problem-solving within a real life situation. We find that learning in this way significantly increases our students’ engagement with the subjects.

Advantages of the problem-based learning approach are:

• Students report that they feel more motivated to learn theoretical knowledge as they can see where they can apply it to real-world situations
• Teamworking and improved communication skills are developed, as students share their expertise and rationale behind their potential solutions

The Podiatry with Independent Prescribing MSc is for practising podiatrists wanting to build on their skills and knowledge, advance their professional practice, and earn a further professional and academic qualification.

A range of optional modules means you can create your own study programme to suit your professional or personal aspirations, and includes the opportunity to blend podiatry with related disciplines.

You will learn from expert lecturers who are all active members of the SCP. This ensures that both the team and the curriculum stay up to date with podiatry policy and practice.

The University of Brighton developed and awarded the first degrees in podiatry in the UK and we have been recognised by podiatry's professional bodies for the standard of our teaching. You will have access to our excellent facilities including our own hospital, and Human Movement Laboratory.

On graduation, you will be able to fulfil advanced professional and autonomous roles as a non-medical prescriber. You will be able to confidently select appropriate medications for patients based on relevant physical examination, assessment, history taking and diagnosis.

The course is approved by the College of Podiatry. An annual monitoring process is in place to ensure the course continues to meet the highest standards for professional training.

Course structure

Lectures will be kept to a minimum as we encourage student-centred learning by utilising action learning sets, online learning, tutorial group discussions, seminars, workshops, facilitated group work, role play, practical skills sessions and laboratory based work, enriched with key note lectures from subject specialists.

You will share your professional experiences with fellow students who are all qualified and experienced health professionals. This provides a multidisciplinary perspective to group discussions, lively debate and a collective learning experience.

In order to gain annotation as an independent prescriber, you must also complete a minimum of 90 hours of supervised practice within your clinical practise setting. This must be supervised by a designated medical practitioner (DMP) who you have identified and agreed with the course team.

We are known for our flexible approaches to practice-based learning, with course durations and intensities that can be adapted to your outside commitments. Several modules in the graduate programme, including one developed for this course, make extensive or even exclusive use of online resources as a teaching medium. However the specific approaches used will vary depending on the modules that you choose.

Facilities

Leaf Hospital:

You will have access to the Leaf Hospital in Eastbourne, our own fully-staffed clinical facility, which offers a podiatry service and a private practice physiotherapy service. This gives you a further opportunity to gain practical experience treating patients throughout your degree.

The Leaf Hospital has two main clinics and three further consulting rooms, allowing up to 28 patients to be seen at any one time. Clinical practice is supported by a complete range of diagnostic and therapeutic equipment, including gait analysis, imaging and more.

You will benefit from use of the orthotics department, where you will produce high quality orthotics and insoles for patients as part of the practical element of your course.

On the first floor there is a fully equipped operating theatre for minor surgical procedures and a human anatomy lab where you will study prosection and take part in lower limb dissection.

In the first semester of the programme, graduates from a range of backgrounds are brought up-to-speed on core knowledge in engineering, biology and research practice.

This is followed by specialist modules in the second semester on human movement analysis, prostheses, implants, physiological measurements and rehabilitation, as well as numerous computer methods applied across the discipline.

The course makes use of different approaches to teaching, including traditional lectures and tutorials, off-site visits to museums and hospitals, and lab work (particularly in the Human Movement and Instrumentation modules).

The core lecturing team is supplemented by leading figures from hospitals and industry.

Programme structure

This programme is studied full-time over one academic year and part-time over two academic years. It consists of eight taught modules and a research project.

All modules are taught on the University main campus, with the exception of visits to the health care industry (e.g. commercial companies and NHS hospitals).

Educational aims of the programme

The course aims:

  • To educate engineering, physical science, life science, medical and paramedical graduates in the broad base of knowledge required for a Biomedical Engineering career in industry, healthcare or research in the United Kingdom, Europe and the rest of the world
  • To underpin the knowledge base with a wide range of practical sessions including laboratory/experimental work and applied visits to expert health care facilities and biomedical engineering industry
  • To develop skills in critical review and evaluation of the current approaches in biomedical engineering
  • To build on these through an MSc research project in which further experimental, analytical, computational, and/or design skills will be acquired

Course structure

This intensive programme runs over 45 weeks per year, for two years. Your time on the course will be balanced between campus-based study and clinical practice.

Sessions are held in small groups, they are interactive, integrated, self-directed, and focus on problem-solving, to examine real-life situations. The use of problem-based learning is considered crucial to students' fast attainment of masters-level standards, and for critical evaluation.

Other learning experiences are arranged according to the need of the problem; these may be lectures, practical sessions, skills classes, debates or seminars. Most importantly, all subjects are integrated around the problems.

Our postgraduate programmes are taught by a wide variety of methods – small active learning groups, seminars, action learning sets, PBL, lectures, self-directed literature searches.

Understanding the relationship between occupation and human health and wellbeing is also explored through student participation in a variety of activities such as cooking, craft, horticulture, performing arts and pottery.

Assessments allow for individual feedback in essential professional skills including written critique, report writing, team working, presentation skills, and verbal/written presentation of intervention.

Exchange

The student exchange programme is for occupational therapy students registered on the Occupational Therapy (Pre-Registration) MSc at the University of Brighton, Occupational Therapy MSc students at the University of Wisconsin La Crosse (UWC) and Occupational Therapy BSc students at the Robert Gordon University, Aberdeen (RGU).

There are two options:

• Host option (year one)
• Travel option (year two)

First year students host visiting students during their Maximising Occupational Capacities module which runs from February to April each year. During the second year students have the option of visiting either UWC or RGU during their spring break.

Our philosophy

The pre-registration occupational therapy programmes incorporate the experience of doing and making, in order to engage analyse and develop skill in therapeutic media. We have creativity studios for cooking, ceramics, crafts, and performing arts, and we have developed gardens for the practice of horticulture.

Around the world, many academic courses in occupational therapy are losing this aspect of their education, to give over more time to ‘theory’, but here at Brighton we believe that it is vital to retain these embodied learning experiences – which utterly link theory and practice - as they are indeed central to the understanding of the true essence and potential of occupation.

Recent research has revealed the connection between skilled hand use and the development of thinking. As one student, who could not imagine a course without these sessions, said “how can we learn about doing without doing?” These classes are central to the philosophy of our occupational therapy education at Brighton and they have become one of its hallmarks.

After professional registration with the HCPC graduates are eligible to take up opportunities in health and social care, in the NHS, social services, and the private sector. There are now many new and exciting possibilities for occupational therapists nationally and worldwide.

Sport and Exercise science is the study of human movement and how the body acutely responds and chronically adapts to physical activity, exercise and sports activities. Study includes a broad range of movement related courses such as exercise physiology, biomechanics, motor learning and movement psychology.

You will study the core areas necessary for professional practice: the clinical sciences, health psychology, medicine, pharmacology, surgery, orthopaedics, research methods and clinical practice.

This intensive programme runs over 45 weeks per year, for two years. Your time on the course will be balanced between campus-based study and clinical practice.

The course begins in September. Formal lectures are an integral part of the curriculum and you also learn through seminars, student presentations and interactive workshops, some of which will be shared with students on the undergraduate program. You will be assessed through essays, exams, practical reports, presentations and your professional development portfolio.

As a podiatry student you will also share some teaching with students on physiotherapy, occupational therapy and pharmacy courses, allowing you to exchange knowledge and expertise with students from other disciplines.

Your practical placements will be mainly at our own Leaf hospital and the local NHS trusts. Day placements for students are arranged with clinics and hospitals across the south-east England and London. There is also an opportunity for self-funded placement at the University of Malta.

Facilities

Leaf Hospital:

You will have access to the Leaf Hospital in Eastbourne, our own fully-staffed clinical facility, which offers a podiatry service and a private practice physiotherapy service. This gives you a further opportunity to gain practical experience treating patients throughout your degree.

The Leaf Hospital has two main clinics and three further consulting rooms, allowing up to 28 patients to be seen at any one time. Clinical practice is supported by a complete range of diagnostic and therapeutic equipment, including gait analysis, imaging and more.

You will benefit from use of the orthotics department, where you will produce high quality orthotics and insoles for patients as part of the practical element of your course.

On the first floor there is a fully equipped operating theatre for minor surgical procedures and a human anatomy lab where you will study prosection and take part in lower limb dissection.

Human Movement Laboratory:

The Human Movement Laboratory is used widely by our physiotherapy, occupational therapy and podiatry students, and is also used for commercial consultancy.

In the lab you will use the latest technology to measure and assess all aspects of human movement, joints, muscles, soft tissue structure and nerves. The laboratory has equipment for conducting cardio-pulmonary investigations including Cosmed metabolic system and spirometry.

Careers and Employability

Our graduates enjoy excellent employment prospects, typically securing roles in advanced practice, clinical teaching, research, education and training, and a variety of positions in the NHS and private sector.

They are working in the UK and worldwide in Europe and Canada, the Caribbean, the Middle East and Singapore.

Podiatrists engage with patient care in a wide range of practices from independent work in the community or private practice to multidisciplinary work in a hospital setting. The scope of podiatry practice varies from general foot care (nail, callus, corns) to musculoskeletal care (for example, tendinopathy, provision of insoles, orthoses and footwear), minor surgery (for example, toenail removal) and wound care (for exampe, diabetic foot ulcers).

With further study and extensive training, graduates can train to become a podiatric surgeon, who is allowed to perform the surgical treatment of the foot and its associated structures.

Graduates of this course are also equipped for further study at MPhil and PhD level.

This MA explores how contemporary politics, conflict and debates about human rights and security are informed by the processes of globalisation.

You will study topics including human rights and humanitarian intervention, the world economy and the changing global order, global governance and the United Nation system, the growth of global networks and movements, global security, conflict resolution and peace-building, international relations and law, global poverty and development, and the politics of sustainability and environmental decline. Because globalisation transcends traditional disciplinary boundaries, our MA takes an interdisciplinary approach to challenge conventional political and international relations approaches.

There are two core modules: Globalisation and Global Politics, and Conflict, Security and Human Rights. You can also select two optional modules to focus on an area of particular interest, for example human rights and humanitarian intervention, global environmental politics, the Middle East, conflict resolution, genocide, international relations theory, the nature of warfare, and global ethics.

Course structure

On the Globalisation: Politics, Conflict and Human Rights MA, you will:

• study key developments and issues in relation to politics, conflict and human rights.
• consider these areas within the context of contemporary globalisation
• be encouraged to develop an informed and critical understanding of contemporary globalisation
receive close tutorial support.
• be able to pursue a wide range of careers as well as opportunities for further postgraduate research.

The programme is founded on the notion that politics, conflict and human rights must now be understood in the context of contemporary globalisation.

Modules

Globalisation and Global Politics:

This module begins by examining a range of approaches to globalisation and global politics before exploring the processes, institutions and ideologies that are widely considered to be driving them. For example, economic globalisation is studied in relation to the financial crisis of 2008 and wider debates about global economic disorder. In particular, the emphasis is on fostering an informed understanding of contemporary globalisation through study of critical theories, debates about power, patterns of global poverty and inequality, and development responses.

In relation to claims about a shift in global power, the rise of China and its implications for the Asia-Pacific Region and the rest of the world are explored. At an institutional level, the Human Rights Council, the International Criminal Court and the European Court of Human Rights are examined. The politics of global sustainability is considered in relation to the formation of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. Finally, the politics of a transnational/global movement is investigated through the study of La Via Campesina.

Conflict, Security and Human Rights:

This module examines contemporary conflict, security and human rights debates in relation to globalisation and the evolution of global politics. Areas and issues examined include: the relationship between global security and international relations theory; conflict resolution theory and the prospects of conflict resolution in Syria; state building and peace-building in Somalia; and a global NGO (Amnesty International) dedicated to monitoring conflict and human rights abuses.

Environmental security is considered within the context of global environmental decline, focusing in particular on Moscow’s apparent resource-based approach to international relations. As for human rights, the major theories and critiques are examined, with specific reference to humanitarian intervention and the emergence of the concept of human security. In this vein, the politics of movement under contemporary globalisation is explored by studying the Geneva Convention and the rights of refugees.
