The AMBA-accredited Hull Executive MBA (EMBA) transforms you into a strategic and responsible leader through our business relevant, internationally recognised programme. Read more

The AMBA-accredited Hull Executive MBA (EMBA) transforms you into a strategic and responsible leader through our business relevant, internationally recognised programme. You will be challenged to think critically to enhance your effectiveness both personally and professionally, developing the skills and understanding required to operate in a complex global business environment.

Teaching is informed by globally recognised research and led by academics with industry experience. Having access to excellent facilities across the University, you and your fellow EMBA students will remain together as a team throughout the programme, learning from each other and enabling you to enlarge your professional network.

With modules taking place in four day blocks (normally Thursday to Sunday), every 6-8 weeks, this allows you to fit your studies around work and other commitments.

The Hull EMBA is also delivered overseas through our partnerships in Bahrain, Hong Kong, Singapore and Romania. Participants at these locations study locally and are taught by our internationally-renowned faculty.

Our AMBA accreditation confirms our quality, and as a Hull EMBA student, you will:

  • take advantage of our relationship with the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) – successful students can be awarded the CMI level seven diploma in strategic management and leadership, enabling you to apply for chartered manager status (on-campus EMBA only)
  • develop a deeper understanding of the complexities of modern organisations through our holistic approach, driven by our expertise in systems thinking
  • forge excellent links with industry through real world consultancy projects
  • gain experience of a broad range of industries and sectors with our diverse cohort
  • transfer new knowledge and skills direct to the workplace

Study information

The Hull EMBA prepares you for senior leadership roles in today's complex world. Designed to develop high-level skills in all the functional aspects of business such as marketing, logistics and human resources, it also develops an awareness of the relationships between them and their contribution to the organisational whole.

This distinctive holistic approach of the Hull EMBA facilitates communication across boundaries – both cultural and organisational - and in so doing enhances personal effectiveness and performance.

You will be challenged to relate your learning to your own experiences and be encouraged to step outside your existing areas of expertise to appreciate the broader context.

Based on both theory and its practical application, the Hull EMBA concentrates on five core themes that are integrated throughout the programme.

  • Connected thinking
  • Modern business organisations require solid accounting, creative marketing and reliable logistics. Customers expect – and organisational success requires – that the various elements will be drawn together to provide an overall product or service.
  • Responsible leadership
  • Throughout the EMBA, you will consider the complex nature of managerial work and will develop and demonstrate leadership competencies within the context of ethics, diversity and executive accountability.
  • Advocacy
  • Management hinges on the art of persuasion. Competence in business is founded on functional forms of business knowledge such as accounting, finance and human resource management – yet managerial success comes from a broader set of skills and attributes requiring the ability to work with others across a variety of contexts.
  • Consensus and difference
  • While acknowledging the aspiration of consensus, the Hull EMBA recognises difference, dissent and conflict, not as distractions but as potentially powerful forces for development and change.
  • Problem identification
  • The Hull EMBA emphasises a focus on problem identification rather than purely the pursuit of solutions, as once a problem is ‘named’ the resolution is more readily established and accepted.

Modules

Teaching takes place in four day blocks (normally Thursday to Sunday) every six-eight weeks. All participants take 12 core modules, studied over two years, organised so that learning in one area deepens understanding in all the others. This focused approach gives you a powerful set of tools for succeeding in today’s complex world.

You will study the following modules:

  • Strategic management

  • Managing in organisations
  • Human resource management
  • International business

A practical, community-focused programme, this MA allows you to explore how theatre can be made in a range of settings. Studying at Hull, you'll have the opportunity to make theatre for a variety of audiences, including in community, applied, and public venues, as well as receiving training in setting up and running theatre companies. The relationship between the theory and practice of theatre making is at the heart of the programme, allowing you to develop as a thinking theatre artist.

Drama at Hull has a strong reputation and a unique history as one of the UK’s first specialist drama departments. Our broad range of staff expertise has enabled us to design a programme that is challenging, varied, and at the forefront of research in the field of theatre making in local and community contexts. We have a reputation for international theatre research with connections to world theatres.

Our excellent dedicated facilities, including the recently listed Gulbenkian Centre and the Middleton Hall, make Hull a clear choice for students wishing to study with unrivalled access to theatre and rehearsal space. The investment will see some of the best facilities of their kind in the UK at the University of Hull, including a concert hall, surround-sound cinema, an ambisonic sound studio and industry-standard recording and rehearsing facilities. The refurbishment will include a new entrance and café with a 400-plus seater concert hall forming the centre-piece of the development. The versatile space is ideal for classical and popular music concerts. With adaptable acoustics, it will also be used for music, theatre and cinema screenings.

Hull has a long tradition of both established arts venues and grassroots and community arts practice. Theatre Making students have opportunities to present their work at annual arts events including Assemblefest, Freedom Festival, and Vista, and to bring work to venues including Hull’s alternative performance space, Fruit. Students also benefit from links with Hull Truck Theatre, the Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough and with nationally renowned companies including Opera North, New Diorama Theatre and Out of Joint. From 2017, the National Student Drama Festival will be based in Hull, a further opportunity for students to present work at one of the country’s most significant student theatre events.

Study information

The MA Theatre Making is designed to connect the theory and practice of theatre and performance, to facilitate collaboration, and to explore and interrogate the interdisciplinary connections between different modes of theatre making.

The programme focuses on the relationship between theatre and performance, place, space and community.

Modules are core for all students and arranged across three strands:

  • Theoretical, historiographic and interdisciplinary models for theatre making
  • Practical exploration of theatre making in local contexts
  • Core professional and academic skills related to the study and practice of theatre making

The flexible programme allows students to study for a PG Certificate, PG Diploma, or MA.

* All modules are subject to availability.

 Future prospects

The MA Theatre Making is intended to prepare students equally well for further study or for a career in the theatre industry.

Hands-on experience in making theatre in local and regional settings gives students a chance to demonstrate advanced skills and practical experience when seeking employment. Students also have the opportunity to establish their own theatre companies, either during the programme or on graduation.

The programme integrates practice and theory, developing graduates who are ready to engage with either the world of professional theatre making, social and applied theatre, or further postgraduate study.

Hull’s MA in History uniquely combines period-specific and thematic modules to give you the confidence to take part in historical debate beyond your immediate specialism. Read more

Hull’s MA in History uniquely combines period-specific and thematic modules to give you the confidence to take part in historical debate beyond your immediate specialism. Widening your analytical lens beyond anything you will have been asked to do at undergraduate level, you will learn to ‘ask better questions’ that would matter just as much to a medievalist or a historian of the present. You join the same community as our postgraduate research students and benefit from the direct supervision of our world-leading experts in historical research.

The exceptional resources available at the University of Hull, and in our city and surrounding region, enable you to cultivate your own interests and strengths. Hull History Centre offers a treasure trove of archive material and our Maritime Historical Studies Centre is globally recognised as a centre for maritime history research. We contribute to Hull’s Wilberforce Institute for the Study of Slavery and Emancipation, which has a library of its own. On campus, the Brynmor Jones Library offers more than one million printed texts, and serves as a digital information hub for the University. The breadth of research interests among our academic staff means we can offer an unrivalled range of dissertation topics.

Study information

The full-time programme is scheduled over 45 weeks, divided into three 15-week trimesters. The part-time programme is the same but spread over two years.

In Trimester 1, you take our core module, Research Project Management for Historians, and one option matching the period or field of your research from the following: Practising Medieval and Early Modern History; Practising Modern History; Feminist and Gender Politics in History, Theory and Practice. Students who choose the latter will work alongside students in the world-leading GEMMA programme of interdisciplinary gender studies.

In Trimester 2, you choose both thematic options, Power, Authority and Freedom in History and Memory, Meaning and History. Together, these will challenge you to draw conclusions from the past which range beyond your specialist period into a wider field of historical debate.

Most of our optional modules use our innovative ‘block’ system, putting you in control of how you combine topics. In appropriate cases, an alternative 30-credit module may be taken outside the Department of History, if it is suitable for your research needs.

The dissertation, at 18,000 words, is the culmination of your postgraduate study and requires greater analytical depth, plus greater critical engagement with source material, than anything you will have experienced as an undergraduate. Our expert supervision will support you through the transition.

* All modules are subject to availability.

Future prospects

Students on our MA History programme often aim to continue into doctoral research at Hull or another higher education institution. Those who use their level 7 qualification as a springboard to a career often go into commercial research, teaching, management, law or the Civil Service.

The programme develops a number of key skills for the workplace, including the ability to defend ideas confidently when challenged by others, to challenge accepted practices or ideas with reasoned arguments and to propose solutions to problems using knowledge as the foundation.

The research-planning element of the core skills module develops the ability to manage your own time under pressure. Collaboration and negotiation with other students also develops teamwork and leadership skills. Through the professional development element of the programme, you become adept at expressing your professional attributes with great assurance to potential employers.

In the Memory, Meaning and History module, you will also obtain an audiovisual recording of your presentation which you could show to employers as evidence of the presentation skills you have developed while studying at Hull.
