master of laws (LLM)

at Delaware Law is designed for attorneys from the U.S. and abroad who seek to expand their knowledge in a specialized area of current practice—or who want to develop a new area of legal expertise. The program welcomes graduates of American JD programs as well as international students who have completed a degree in law from a qualifying non-U.S. law school.

Students who choose to complete a general master of laws program at Delaware Law School in a seated class format, may enjoy campus life with our on-campus housing, access to exercise facilities, involvement in student clubs, and the opportunity to visit local courthouses and government.

Degree Requirements

To earn a general LLM, students must complete 24 semester hours of coursework. Typically, the 24 semester hours of coursework can be completed in one academic year. Students in an online LLM program have the option to structure their program at a more flexible pace, completing the program over two years. All coursework, however, must be completed within four years from the date of matriculation.

Corporate Law & Finance (on-campus only)

With more than one million companies incorporated in Delaware, there is no better place to pursue a master of laws in corporate law and finance than Delaware Law. Our location in Wilmington – often referred to as the “Corporate Capital of America” – gives you a front-row seat to courts and law firms on the leading edge of corporate law.

To earn a LLM in corporate law and finance, students must complete 24 semester hours of coursework at the graduate level, in corporate-related areas like commercial law, business acquisitions, or intellectual property. Graduate courses in corporate law and finance are worth between two and four semester hours of credit. At least 18 of the 24 semester hours must be completed in residence at Delaware Law, although students may complete this residence requirement as either a full-time or part-time student.

In order to qualify for the LLM, students must complete all program requirements within four years from the date of matriculation.

Our Postgraduate Diploma in Law/CPE is recognised as a qualifying law degree. It will expand the knowledge of those working in the justice, social and consumer sectors, as well as supporting a move to a career as a barrister or solicitor. Accredited by the Solicitors Regulation Authority and the bar Standards Board, this course enables graduates in non-law related studies to convert to a career in law.

Experienced lecturers will support you through this practice-led, skills-based course, integrating guest talks from local practitioners and judges. Extracurricular activities, such as mooting, client interviewing and pro bono work, allow you to develop practical skills in legal research, problem-solving, critical analysis and communication.

Classes are taught in small groups of exclusively postgraduate law students by enthusiastic, expert lecturers who are committed to research and teaching excellence. You can take this course either full-time or part-time.

After finishing the Law CPE, you can achieve a masters in Law (LLM) by successfully completing a dissertation module.

Course structure

The part-time course is based on an average study commitment of 20 hours per week, 14 hours of which is private study. Full-time students are expected to devote 30 hours per week to study outside class time.

Before you start this course, you need to complete a programme of preliminary reading. The programme begins in September with a module on the English legal system, which provides you with the foundation needed to underpin your legal studies.

Teaching methods include lectures, seminars and workshops. Assessment is by means of coursework and exams.

Core modules will give you practical knowledge in a variety of logistics and supply areas as well as key business skills such as financial analysis. In term 3 you will be able to tailor your course through a choice of two option modules and a final project or work placement.

Careers and employability

On successful completion of the Common Professional Examination (CPE), you will be awarded a postgraduate diploma in Law. The diploma satisfies all the requirements of the Joint Academic Stage Board for completing the academic stage of professional legal training. You can progress onto the Legal Practice Course to become a solicitor, or the Bar Professional Training Course to become a barrister.

The course is also highly relevant to a range of other occupations within the justice sector and those with a significant law aspect, such as consumer, housing and welfare advice work, social work, the prosecution service and the police.

Assessment

Modules are assessed by a range of coursework, design and practice based projects, presentations and a dissertation. There are no exams on this programme.

Teaching and learning

All students take part in a field trip in the second year to the Netherlands to help relate theory to practice. You'll visit Dutch housing organisations and local government, and on your return develop a comparative case study for the assessment.

Teaching is delivered through seminars, lectures and workshops. The course makes full of our blended learning platform, Moodle. Online tutorials will be made available, allowing you to enhance your skills in self-managing your studies. This supports the more traditional teaching methods.

Teaching is supplemented by site visits and speakers from professional practice.

The full Masters course is accredited as fulfilling the academic requirements for the Chartered Institute of Housing professional qualification. Our students can register as student members and go on to become full members after completion of the Institutes' professional experience requirements. Students applying for full membership of the CIH must have work experience in a housing related field. This is included in the course fees.

Housing has a key role to play in the lives of individuals and communities and this course aims to equip housing professionals to deal with challenges facing the sector. 3) Payment information and any discounts/scholarships for partner students
With regards to tuition fees and cost of accommodation we will send details of these to the students when they receive their decision letter.
For information, the fees for 2014/15 for the LLM International Commercial Law are £15,225 for international students. Students can check the School funding page to see whether they are eligible for a scholarship (e.g. http://www.reading.ac.uk/law/pg-taught/law-pgt-feesandfunding.aspx). If applying for scholarships, on the online application students should state that at the moment they have no funding (in the first section). In the second section they can list any funding they are thinking of applying for. At this stage there is no need to be any more specific than that. If there are external scholarships that a student has heard of and is planning on applying for they can also list those here, but this is not essential at this stage. If the student is successful in gaining a scholarship, they should inform the university subsequently. Any scholarship directly from the university, automatically goes towards the payment of fees for the course.

About the Course

The LPC is delivered in our purpose-built Law School by a highly experienced academic team from a variety of legal professional backgrounds. Your tuition will be delivered through a combination of methods, mainly workshops and electronic learning.

Simulating a law firm's identity, you will work through transactional case studies, which are designed to reflect realistic legal challenges and scenarios. This approach allows you to learn skills such as interviewing clients, writing letters of advice, preparing legal documents and making court appearances.

You will receive the opportunity to hone your legal skills through involvement in one of our voluntary legal work schemes that offer pro bono legal services to those in need. Manchester Law School also offers competitive work placements for successful candidates providing vital work experience.
