Good quality housing is one of the most basic necessities in producing thriving communities and ensuring the health and wellbeing of individuals, so the job market around housing provides plenty of opportunities to graduates.

The learning style is designed to provide support through lectures, workshops and speakers from practice, as well as directed reading and regular progress meetings between students and tutors. All modules are assessed by coursework rather than exams.

You'll study different housing systems and visit a European country to investigate its housing practices - currently students visit Amsterdam in the Netherlands.

The course is professionally accredited by the Chartered Institute of Housing.

Fast track to professional qualification

For those with substantial relevant experience it is possible to gain the PgCert qualification in just two semesters (Sep-June) on a part-time day release timetable. It is designed to appeal those who are unsure of their ability to enrol for a full Masters, but progression after completion is encouraged.

The Masters element requires the submission of a 20,000 word dissertation in the third year.

The first year concentrates on housing policy and the changing role of the housing professional. You'll examine housing and planning issues, and running the social business.

In the second year you'll explore housing economics and finance; housing law; and the interrelationship of housing and health. During the second year students you'll complete a comparative study of the UK and Dutch housing systems on a European study visit to the Netherlands.

Award

The PgCert award requires completion of 60 credits, which you'll complete in the first year. For PgDip, an additional 60 credits are required in the second year. For full MA award, you'll complete the dissertation during your third year, achieving 180 credits.

Assessment

Modules are assessed by a range of coursework, design and practice based projects, presentations and a dissertation. There are no exams on this programme.

Teaching and learning

All students take part in a field trip in the second year to the Netherlands to help relate theory to practice. You'll visit Dutch housing organisations and local government, and on your return develop a comparative case study for the assessment.

Teaching is delivered through seminars, lectures and workshops. The course makes full of our blended learning platform, Moodle. Online tutorials will be made available, allowing you to enhance your skills in self-managing your studies. This supports the more traditional teaching methods.

Teaching is supplemented by site visits and speakers from professional practice.

Professional links

The full Masters course is accredited as fulfilling the academic requirements for the Chartered Institute of Housing professional qualification. Our students can register as student members and go on to become full members after completion of the Institutes' professional experience requirements. Students applying for full membership of the CIH must have work experience in a housing related field. This is included in the course fees.

As well as being a postgraduate course of study it is also a professional qualification accredited by the Chartered Institute of Housing for those looking to further their career in both public and private sector housing organisations.

Shelter is one of the most basic human needs, but the provision of that shelter - the development of enough housing of the right type and quality in the most appropriate locations - is a challenge that few, if any, governments in the developed world have fully addressed. This MSc offers an interdisciplinary perspective on the 'housing question' in advanced economies, with core contributions from across the faculty.

About this degree

Students will develop appropriate design, analytical and presentational skills, and work on practical cases that test their capacity for creative thinking and problem-solving. The curriculum covers UK-specific policy and practice as well as a range of international case studies and globally relevant debates in the provision of housing.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits.

The programme consists of six core modules (90 credits), two elective modules from across The Bartlett School of Planning or beyond, subject to approval (30 credits) and a dissertation/report (60 credits).

Our research is organised into 15 research centres and groups. Each of these involves externally funded research, international collaboration and the active involvement of doctoral students. A brief outline of some of the disciplines is outlined below.

The Applied and Theoretical Microeconomics (ATM) group focuses on issues in theoretical microeconomics and applied microeconomics. The interests of group members includes:

About this degree

This MSc aims to equip participants to work effectively as development practitioners in urban contexts through a deeper understanding of the processes that generate urban change. i) to enable students of a high calibre to pursue their education at an advanced applied level drawing on the primary disciplines of economics, planning and environmental policy, with additional specialisms in finance and law;

The University of Maryland School of Public Policy will offer a for-credit international graduate course on understanding and synthesizing evidence-based research in Summer 2018. (This course will also be offered in Summer 2019.)

Classes will be held in Paris, France from June 4-15, 2018, with some assignments being due before and after the two weeks in Paris.

With the assistance of the Economics Department at Université Paris 1 Panthéon Sorbonne and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), this study abroad course is designed for graduate and advanced undergraduate students studying public policy, public administration, and related subjects such as education, governance, international development, political science, public health, social welfare, sociology, and urban planning.

Course Summary

This course is designed to help students understand and synthesize policy-oriented, evidence-based research in a real-world setting. The course will cover project planning; conducting the literature review (such as the development and implementation of the search strategy and the use of EndNote Web to manage references); interpreting evidence (and evaluating causal claims); synthesizing the available research; drawing conclusions (based on the research and theory); and communicating those conclusions to policy makers, advocates, and the public.

Students will prepare either a structured literature review, research synthesis, or policy analysis for the OECD or a similar agency or organization located in or near Paris. The students will work with their clients while in Paris, but they will plan their projects with their clients beforehand and complete their project after leaving Paris.

The research topics will be initially identified by the client and the UMD faculty, with the final details to be worked out between the client and the student. Possible policy areas include aging and pensions, child welfare, criminal justice, education, employment and the labor market, families and children, health, housing, migration, social welfare, and, perhaps, the environment.

Prior to arriving in Paris, students will be matched to clients and will work with them to create an initial project description, which will include a delineation of the policy question to be addressed and the scope of research to be conducted. While in Paris, besides attending classes, students will prepare and present project plans to their clients (and others) and make site visits to international organizations that conduct similar policy-oriented research. After leaving Paris, students will complete their projects, interacting with their clients as needed. Final projects will be due about two months after leaving Paris.

Course Schedule and Facilities

Prior to their arrival in Paris, students will be matched to clients and there will be a preliminary online meeting to discuss the course syllabus. In Paris, the course will meet daily (tentatively 9:30-13:00) Monday–Friday for two weeks from June 4 through June 15, 2018 on the campus of the Economics Department at Université Paris 1 Panthéon Sorbonne, which is located in the heart of the Latin Quarter. As mentioned above, final projects will be due about two months after students leave Paris.
