In line with our academic  strengths in planning and development and real estate markets and investment, this Master’s programme will develop your specialist knowledge and skills in planning and development and equip you for a career in the private or public sector. The MSc Spatial Planning and Development is accredited by the Royal Town Planning Institute and the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.

The programme focuses on planning as it engages with economic and property development processes at all levels, from the site, neighbourhood, local, national and international. You will be able to concentrate on particular aspects of development planning to suit your interests and career aspirations (e.g. strategic, economic, environment, regeneration or countryside) and you will have the opportunity to undertake in-depth study, within a framework that emphasises integration, as well as apply your learning to another country through the European field study.

Fieldwork

Fieldwork
The overseas fieldwork trip is a practical research-based residential that helps draw the various elements of the degree together.

The course tackles the challenges of urbanisation in the 21st century. Since 2008, more than half the world's population has lived in cities. Structure

This course is offered full-time over 12 months and is divided into two parts:

• Part two is the individual dissertation which allows you to develop advanced postgraduate research skills.

Teaching

An array of teaching and learning styles are used throughout this programme.

You will attend lectures, participate in seminars and discussions, and attend field study visits. Most of the taught modules in the programme are compulsory, though there is some scope for choice in the second semester at Cardiff University.

You should attend all timetabled sessions of the programme – lectures, seminars and presentations – but are also expected to engage in independent study.

Assessment

A variety of summative assessment methods are used. These include formal written examinations, written texts, written assignments of a variety of lengths, projects requiring empirical data, case studies, student-led presentations, reviews of current research, library-based research, negotiated topics and formats.

With the exception of two modules (which use exams), all assessment is now done by coursework. This approach allows you to pursue and develop specific interests and themes across a range of different modules. It also provides further opportunities for you to work independently and demonstrate high-level practical, professional and transferable skills.

Coursework will generally consist of one piece of work of 4000–5000 words unless otherwise specified. Some coursework assessment will take the form of project-based work where this is appropriate to the skill set and learning outcomes.

The major piece of project work will be the dissertation. This will involve an independent piece of analysis and empirical research. The dissertation will be an integrated part of the scheme with a preparatory module (Research Study Methods) which aims to provide you with the skills and the knowledge necessary to complete the exercise successfully.

You will be expected to complete the dissertation by the end of September of your final year.

Applicants for the qualifying CLD programme require a relevant first degree and current professional practice in a public and voluntary CLD context. This new award offers graduates from a range of disciplines such as education, social work, housing, planning, the arts, health, politics or law an opportunity to undertake a postgraduate qualification in Community Learning and Development.

Practitioners with an existing CLD qualification can choose to study the optional modules through a continuing professional development route. The programme is also suitable for returning students who have a PG Diploma in CE/CLD, who wish to complete the Masters dissertation.

The Programme can take 2 to 3 years depending on a student's circumstances with modules being delivered by blended and distance learning and are supported by the use of the University's Virtual Learning Environment and other online tools such as Adobe Connect and Google+. About the course

This flexible, distance learning course has been developed to reflect the important role of housing organisations in a changing political and economic environment. Housing has a key role to play in the lives of individuals and communities and this course aims to equip housing professionals to deal with challenges facing the sector. The course incorporates the professional qualification route to Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH) membership.

Upon successful completion of 60 level seven credits you will be rewarded with a Postgraduate Certificate in Housing Studies. There may also be an option to progress on to an MSc qualification; however this is subject to sufficient numbers enrolling onto the programme.

•CIH membership
This course incorporates the professional qualification to CIH membership in the first year core modules. A key feature of the course is the development of your theory and research skills in year two and the opportunity to use work-based examples in assignments and as a method to reflect on the curriculum

You will benefit from the experience of both the DMU associate lecturers, who work with the CIH, and expert staff at the Centre for Comparative Housing Research

Teaching and assessment

Teaching will be delivered through formal lectures, informal seminars, tutorials, workshops, discussions and e-learning packages. Assessment will usually be through a combination of individual and group work, presentations, essays, reports and exams.

Graduates of our housing courses find themselves promoted to a variety of different posts at management and director level – not just in housing organisations, but across the public and private sectors.

Course modules

•Context of Housing: in this module you will analyse the role of housing organisations within a wider explanation of the social, political and economic context as well as within a broad explanation of the legal framework and governance structures.

•Housing Organisations: seeks to develop business management concepts and techniques by looking at customer services, managing staff, finance and value for money, collaborative working, leadership, ethics and professionalism.

There is an international need for professionals who can provide sustainable and resilient infrastructure to help alleviate poverty in low- to middle-income countries. This programme will create future engineers who can work in a global context and with the skills and understanding to address the challenges of poverty worldwide.

Degree information

Students gain understanding of infrastructure design and delivery processes in resource-limited settings, and learn how to mobilise technical expertise to develop solutions with local stakeholders in a global context. The wide range of taught modules also provides opportunity to critically engage with the complexities and ethical dilemmas of working as an engineer internationally.

Students undertake modules to the value of 180 credits. The programme consists of three core modules (45 credits), a collaborative project (30 credits). three optional modules (45 credits), and a dissertation/report (60 credits). A Postgraduate Diploma (120 credits), full-time nine months, part-time two years, flexible up to five years is offered

Dissertation/report
All students undertake an independent research project which culminates in a dissertation of 10,000 to 15,000 words.

Teaching and learning
This programme will be delivered by a selection of taught modules, collaborative project with overseas clients and practical activities, including a site visit to the Centre for Alternative Technologies in Wales. While most of the field trip costs are met by the department, students are required to pay £300 towards the trip which contributes to accommodation and food. Assessment will range from group project presentations, coursework, and examinations to essays and a compulsory dissertation over the last term.

-International development agencies and engineering consultancies.
-Organisations such as the United Nations, the World Bank, and the European Union.
-Non-governmental agencies worldwide, such as Practical Action, WaterAid, and Water & Sanitation for the Urban Poor.

Employability
MSc Engineering for International Development graduates will be able to pursue a career in the field of engineering, working on projects in low-middle income, developing countries, as well as the broader international development sector in different capacities and within various organisations currently operating in the field, such as the UN, the EU or NGOs such as WaterAid, Practical Action, Habitat for Humanity and more.

The programme provides opportunities for students to get hands-on experience in EWB's Know Before You Go course, based on the yearly event run by Engineers without Borders UK. A self-financed summer school can be organized to Ethiopia to gain exposure to the water supply, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) programme of the UN.

This programme offers you the opportunity to study the theoretical and practical dimensions of adult, community and youth development. It will equip you with the skills and knowledge to work alongside people in communities to initiate sustainable social change.

◾You will have the opportunity to participate in a network of community development projects. Project leads contribute to the taught aspects of the programme and also provide you with placement opportunities.

Programme Structure

You will take two core and two optional courses from a specialist pathway. There is a large practical element either in the form of a placement or as part of your current workplace. Throughout the programme there is emphasis on participative and experiential learning. For the MEd you will also undertake an in-depth supervised research project, on a related topic of your choosing.
