The Masters in Strategic Hotel Management is an intellectually rigorous programme, drawing on a range of our subject and industry experts, that is relevant to the needs of future senior managers, executives and professionals in the hotel industry.

In a rapidly changing tourism environment, you are grounded in the skills necessary for strategic analysis and the knowledge necessary for informed and flexible decision-making.

About the course

The course is designed to cater for local and international professionals within the industry who wish to gain the necessary qualifications and theoretical awareness to enabling you to advance your careers or operations. It will also appeal to recent international and home graduates who wish to acquire the specialist knowledge and qualifications necessary in order to manage tourism operations.

This programme has a core set of modules, with all of the functional business management modules delivered in Stage 1: People Management and Development, Decision Making for Managers (Finance and Accounting) and International Tourism Marketing. In addition, a Research Method module is designed to clearly contextualising research in Tourism, Hospitality and Event Management. In doing so, this will enable the students to benefit from the growing research expertise of the subject group to assure a sound transition to Stage 2 where students will be required to evolve understanding into new spheres or deploy knowledge in more practical context.

At stage 2, there are two core modules 'Contemporary Themes: Tourism/Hospitality/Event Management provides students with opportunity to explore current trends and issues affecting an industry of their interest. The other core module is 'Live Project: Tourism/ Hospitality/Event Management' is designed to provide students with an insight into the nature of tourism, hospitality and event organisations through immersion in live project research. Students are also given the flexibility to create their curriculum by choosing three out of five optional modules. 'Project Management' and 'Residential Field Trip' modules are created to enhance practical skills at networking and applying theories to practice. The 'Ethical Dimensions of Tourism' and 'Crisis and Risk Management in Events' and 'Urban Regeneration' are developed to address the increasing concern for businesses in the areas of ethics and crisis management.

At Stage 3, students complete a research dissertation in the specialist area you have chosen. This provides the opportunity for you to apply your knowledge and evaluate the complex nature, structure and functional areas of the tourism, hospitality and event industries, and their global trends and implications in different geographical, economical and socio-cultural contexts.

This course provides a contemporary, critical, and international programme of study which guides students through the main debates, research, and techniques of the area of study. It provides the students with qualities, skills and qualifications thereby enhancing their employment opportunities and their career advancement. The programme team is committed to a philosophy of rigour and the provision of guided choice in the programme of study. A richness of approach will emerge not just from the teaching, but also from the international student cohort.

We are preparing graduates for successful careers in the hospitality, recreation or tourism industries or in an associated government agency with an international, national or local focus. Graduates from the programme are employed by international hotel chains (Four Seasons Hotel, Marriott Hotels, Sheraton Hotels, The Ritz Carlton, Starwood Hotel Group) in China, India Macau, Thailand and Great Britain, as well as working for independent hotels and Event Management companies in Great Britain. Other careers pursued by our Graduates include Recruitment Agents, Lecturers and entrepreneurs (travel company, import and export trading company).

Teaching methods

We offer a varied programme of teaching that includes facilitated seminars, practical workshops, projects for companies, web-based learning, case study analysis and traditional lectures. We also provide sessions by visiting staff, practitioners and consultants to give a varied perspective of the topics covered. You will be assessed through a variety of coursework including presentations, reports and projects. You will also be required to complete a dissertation and will be supported by a dissertation supervisor.

Anywhere that people are away from home and need food, drink or accommodation is where our industry provides the service.

- Purpose -

This degree has been designed to meet the needs of those who aspire to management in the Hospitality industry. It is aimed to help you develop a detailed knowledge of the industry and the associated management skills and abilities necessary in the world’s largest and fastest growing industry to meet the needs of an ever more sophisticated consumer.

- Teaching and learning assessment -

A range of teaching and learning methods will be employed to develop learning through block delivery with the use of online learning for dissemination of teaching and learning materials. The processes and theories underpinning sports coaching science will be explored, together with key practical competencies, all delivered in conjunction with an intensive work placement offering invaluable industry relevant experience.

This course is highly vocational in nature and beneficial to those either wishing to seek future employment in Sports Coaching Science, or, those currently employed within a professional club or organisation.

The advent of this course is in response to the marked growth in career opportunities available to sports coaching scientists across a range of sporting clubs and organisations. This is exemplified by the large number of job vacancies advertised on websites such as SportsCoachUK, UK Sport, BASES, County Sports Partnerships and LinkedIn.

**Candidates must hold at least a Level Two Governing Body of Sport coaching award; having currently (within the last 3 years) attended a Safeguarding and Protecting Children workshop and hold current coaching insurance and a current DBS check.

We provide performance support for elite athletes and competitive teams. We consistently perform well against the elite of university sport. A high number of our performance teams compete in the British Universities and Colleges Sport (BUCS) programme at the elite level.

Several teams are supported with high-level coaching, training facility support and sports science analysis. Numerous local and national sports clubs’ links with our student sports teams provide additional high-level playing opportunities.

The Certificate and Diploma in Company Direction (Chartered Director, stages 1 & 2) are based on a blended learning principle, making them the most time-efficient way to keep you up-to-date with your changing responsibilities as a director. Individuals are supported along a continuous development path from knowledge acquisition through to exploring the application of this knowledge in a realistic and relevant environment.

IoD development programmes will equip you, as a director, with the key skills, knowledge and understanding essential for successfully directing an organisation from a strategic perspective. They lead to recognised qualifications: the Certificate and Diploma in Company Direction, and ultimately, to Chartered Director status.

The Certificate in Company Direction (Chartered Director, stage 1) consists of four mandatory modules, via 10 taught days. The programme encompasses the knowledge and understanding necessary to function effectively as a director. To be awarded this qualification you must successfully complete all the modules and the Certificate examination. Once you have completed the Certificate in Company Direction, the Diploma in Company Direction is the next step.

The Diploma in Company Direction (Chartered Director, stage 2) provides the opportunity to put into practice the knowledge and understanding gained from the Certificate with a 3-day ‘Developing Board Performance’ module followed by the Diploma examination. The Diploma Programme is designed to encourage peer group support and provides challenging and stimulating scenarios, mirroring in many ways the operation of a board.

This MSc focuses on best practice in management, leadership and hospitality while developing a reflective international focus. It underpins the management challenges and critical issues in contemporary hospitality leadership.

You may choose to develop a hospitality business plan or investigate the dynamics of consumer behaviour via the behavioural finance module. You will study a range of business and hospitality modules and complete a hospitality focused project designed to provide benefits to a wider community.

Teaching learning and assessment

You will attend lectures and seminars, work in groups and also carry out independent learning. You will be expected to participate in discussions, prepare and develop ideas and engage with experiential learning. Assessment methods will include management reports, essays, web based discussions, reflections on practice, live case studies and group work with presentations. A central part of the course experience is the regular involvement with industry, through specific visits, events, and guest speakers. Class sizes are normally 10-30.

Teaching hours and attendance

Attendance requirements at QMU depend on the modules studied and if you are full or part-time. In most instances the taught elements of the full-time course occur on Tuesday, Wednesday (AM) and Thursday. Part-time students have the option to select different modules each year.

We work continually with a wide range of business organisations and public services, as well as the third sector, individual business leaders and industry experts to develop our courses. This ensures that along with in-depth theoretical underpinnings, the courses are rooted in relevance and industry practice.
