The Masters in Strategic Hotel Management is an intellectually rigorous programme, drawing on a range of our subject and industry experts, that is relevant to the needs of future senior managers, executives and professionals in the hotel industry.

An integrated approach gives you a truly international perspective on the strategic aspects of hotel management. The programme also offers you the opportunity to pursue specialisation through optional modules that reflect your interests.

This programme is studied full-time over one academic year and part-time students must study at least two taught technical modules per academic year.

Educational aims of the programme

  • An in-depth exploration of the strategic management approaches, techniques and skills required for senior management positions in the hotel industry that builds on the underpinning knowledge of operational management that has been obtained by study at an undergraduate level. This will involve the study of national, international and global hotel chain operations in their various forms

Teaching and learning

The innovative learning experience on this course is very much student-centred and interactive. You will take part in multicultural group work, case studies, workshops, seminars, lectures, events and one-to-one tutorials. Alumni and senior industry professionals contribute to the programme through guest lectures. You will have the opportunity to be personally mentored by an industry leader.

Field trips

Each year, there are opportunities to go on field trips including visits to attractions, hotels, museums and the corporate office of a leading international hotel company.

Field trips are optional and are paid for by the student. Some field trips are subsidised.

Attendance pattern

Full-time mode involves approximately 15 hours of staff contact time per week. In addition there is a significant amount of independent and group study time. You will therefore be expected to take a great deal of responsibility for your own learning and to manage your time effectively. This Master's degree is intended to provide you with an advanced understanding of the hotel & food services industries and a managerial perspective of how to run such organisations. The emphasis of this course is on accommodation management, food & drink, and the food service sector. Study grants and financing

EUHT StPOL has a study Help Fund for studies in its centre. The aim of this fund is to assist entrance for candidates to educational programs who for economic reasons have difficulty in enrolling. This help is adjudicated in the form of a percentage of the total basic or academic cost of the course up to 50% based on the academic background and purchasing power of the candidate and those financing the studies.

The course recognises the importance of tourism and hospitality to national and international economies and the need for enthusiastic, competent managers to lead and inform the projected growth of the industry. A key focus of the course is on the development and application of digital skills to manage, communicate and sell to the target customer. Through practical learning and engagement with industry you will develop an ability to make decisions based on knowledge and theory, think beyond the conventional and apply practical management solutions.

What you will study

STAGE 1

You will gain a thorough understanding and awareness of contemporary tourism and hospitality issues and learn how to plan and develop strategies within both domestic and international contexts. Your transferable skills of communication, teamwork and decision-making will be established.

STAGE 2

You will continue to develop your specialist skills, in-depth knowledge and practical experience. You will present a written research proposal for submission, which will normally form the basis for the Masters dissertation or project. A four week period of professional industry experience is undertaken at the end of the taught modules.

STAGE 3

You are given the opportunity to conduct a piece of substantive, independent, research in area of your own choosing within international tourism and hospitality. You can work with live-clients on industry focused projects or present a formal dissertation of 15,000 words.

On Campus Study

You will engage with the course through online and on campus learning materials, lectures, tutorials, industry-led workshops and live client projects. These comprise of a mix of group study, site visits, discussion, simulation and presentations of findings by teams and individuals.

Access to our virtual learning environment, CampusMoodle, is also provided giving you access from home to learning materials (including videos, e-books and journals).

Part Time On Campus Study

Our teaching staff have very strong links to industry, with the core teaching staff being members of a number of influential industry bodies including Aberdeen City & Shire Hotel Associations, VisitAberdeenshire Tourism Forum and The Burn Education Retreat (Goodenough College). One staff member is a Scottish Representative of the Tourism Management Institute.

They are actively engaged in research which underpins the course development and delivery.

Other staff members include guest lecturers and senior industry professionals which provides you with the opportunity to learn first-hand from professionals about the practical challenges which you may face in your working lives. Many of our staff feature in the annual Support and Teaching staff with Appreciation and Recognition (STAR) awards voted by the students and organised by RGU:Union.

Placements

We are recognised as a centre of excellence in hospitality and this MBA has been devised in consultation with employers and managers within the sector. This MBA offers real-life experiences and engagement with the industry. We have a strong belief and desire to take you out of the traditional classroom setting to experience and explore the sector for yourself. For example, current students were overnight guests at a five star hotel where they were able to discuss the history, operations and challenges with the owner.

Within the hospitality sector, the need for high performing groups and teams is of particular importance. The course takes a clear and consistent focus on team and project dynamics and challenges you to take on different types of roles in delivering objectives. You will study a range of business and hospitality modules and complete a project with a hospitality organisation.

Teaching, learning and assessment

You will attend lectures and seminars, work in groups, complete case studies, participate in field trips, carry out independent learning, participate in discussions, develop ideas, and engage with experiential learning. Assessment methods include management reports, essays, and reflection on practice and group work with presentations. A unique aspect of the course is the challenge to design, lead and reflect upon a hospitality project that focuses on an external business partner. You will be expected to frame this challenge towards the hospitality sector. Central to the course experience is the regular involvement of guest speakers and field trips which provide valuable insights into practice, contemporary trends and thinking. Class sizes are normally 10-30.

Teaching hours and attendance

Modules you study on-campus require you to attend classes and carry out independent work. Attendance requirements at QMU depend on which module you are studying and whether you are full or part-time. In most instances the taught elements of the full-time course occur on Tuesday, Wednesday (AM) and Thursday. Part-time students have the option to select different routes each year.
