Course overview

This Masters course takes a social science approach to tourism and hospitality and combines it with practical skills for the workplace. We have designed our stimulating course to give you a head start in the tourism and hospitality sectors, which are part of one of the world’s largest industries.

We welcome applications from graduates of any discipline. You will learn theoretical approaches through modules such as ‘Critical Tourism Theory and Methods’ and ‘International Tourism and Development’. There is also a core module in ‘Hospitality Management Studies’. We organise field trips and company visits to put your learning into context and we offer an optional work-based learning module.

The final phase of the course is a major project that you negotiate with your tutors to reflect your particular interests and chosen career path. For example, your project could have special relevance to the skill sets required by hotel managers, resort coordinators or restaurant entrepreneurs.

University Library Services
The St Peter’s Library is excellent for tourism and there’s a full-time librarian who is dedicated to the Business and Tourism sections.
Further resources are available at the main Murray Library, which has a total of over 430,000 books with many more available through the inter-library loan service. You will benefit from a wide range of journals and periodicals, many of them in an online format. The University spends around £1 million every year on new books and resources.

IT provision
When it comes to IT provision you can take your pick from hundreds of PCs as well as Apple Macs in the David Goldman Informatics Centre and St Peter’s Library. There are also free WiFi zones throughout the campus. If you have any problems, just ask the friendly helpdesk team.

Course structure

Full-time students attend workshops two days per week, while the part-time route usually requires one day per week. Some modules may be delivered intensively over several consecutive days.

For international students, the MSc also offers an extended masters route with English language study for between two and sixth months before the course begins.

Professional-Based Learning Module:

All credit-based postgraduate courses at the School of Sport and Service Management offer the Professional-Based Learning module.

The module offers you an opportunity to undertake practical experience in a work environment and gain invaluable first-hand knowledge. It is designed to help you engage with the process of planning and delivering expertise in practice, and to reflect upon and take steps to improve your academic, personal and professional skills.

In Semester 1 (September–January) you will have classes on CV development, interview skills, target setting, reflective practice and experiential learning, leading to 100 hours of professional experience in Semester 2 (February–June). This experience could take the form of a part-time job, an unpaid internship, a volunteering opportunity in the university or time as a mentee in your chosen industry. You can also take this module as part of a live consultancy in connection with one of your tourism, sport, hospitality or event modules, either in the UK or a School of Sport and Service Management project overseas.

Our school-based Employability Hub will be on hand to assist you in securing an experience that best meets your career goals and aspirations. Professional experience will enhance your practice and academic knowledge, and many of our students have started their careers with their placement organisation.

Culinary Arts Studio

The Culinary Arts Studio is a state-of-the-art commercial kitchen, restaurant and cafe available for use by hospitality students. It provides an outstanding opportunity to observe and record social interaction within a hospitality setting.

The studio is fully equipped with programmable interactive mood lighting, a data projector, a PA system, CCTV, VHS/DVD playback, a multi-channel mixing desk and flat screen monitors.

Teaching and learning

The innovative learning experience on this course is very much student-centred and interactive. You will take part in multicultural group work, case studies, workshops, seminars, lectures, events and one-to-one tutorials. Alumni and senior industry professionals contribute to the programme through guest lectures. You will have the opportunity to be personally mentored by an industry leader.

The tutors are internationally renowned for their research and consultancy activities, and their excellent links with hotel, tourism and events industries. Approach to assessment

Assessment is based predominantly on individual coursework and the dissertation. There is an examination in the Strategic Financial Management module.

Field trips

Each year, there is a series of field trips to events such as the World Travel Market and visits to destinations, attractions, hotels, museums and the corporate office of a leading international hotel company.

Field trips are optional and are paid for by the student.

FURTHER INFORMATION

For full-time students, the taught element is normally completed over a nine month period starting in October. Part-time students will normally attend on a one day a week basis and complete the taught element in two years. Students who complete the taught element of the course, in part or in its entirety, may graduate with either a Postgraduate Certificate or Diploma in International Hospitality and Tourism Management. Students wishing to complete the MSc award must complete the research element, which comprises of a dissertation. Full-time students will normally complete this in the three months that follow the taught element, whilst part-time students complete this during the course of an academic session.

If you already hold the Level 7 Postgraduate Diploma in Tourism and Hospitality Management from either the Confederation for Tourism and Hospitality (CTH) or the Organisations for Tourism and Hospitality Management (OTHM) you can top-up your qualification to a full MSc by studying a research methods module and researching and writing a 20,000 word dissertation.

The degree is jointly delivered with ESHotels in Paris enabling you to integrate with students from this course when you jointly participate on a field trip.

Teaching and learning

Classroom teaching includes a mix of traditional lectures, seminars, workshops and guest lectures from industry stakeholders. We undertake a real life business development scenario with our industry partner Merlin Entertainments and undertake a residential field trip in Semester 2.

We are currently negotiating a partnership with InHolland University, Amsterdam, where you could study Semester 1 in Amsterdam and complete Semester 2 and the dissertation at LSBU (This option is open to UK and EU students only).

The course develops the appropriate skills, tools and knowledge to operate innovatively in the global tourism and hospitality environments. The nature of the teaching and assessment allows you to apply the theories and processes learnt in class to your preferred setting (e.g public or private sector; tourism or hospitality industries; related policy and government organisations; UK, European or international).

Placements

If you are a home or EU student you may wish to consider undertaking a voluntary year-long work placement in the UK or overseas to gain, extend or seek variety in your experience within the industry prior to studying with us. If you undertake such a placement you may use this as the basis for an extended industry-related management project instead of the traditional dissertation. This is subject to prior approval by the Course Director and must be an investigation into an aspect of management that is worthy of investigation and is subject to the usual academic discipline.

This option is not open to overseas students, as Home Office regulations mean that overseas students are unable to get a visa for the placement year.

We have a wide range of industry speakers on the course and you undertake a range of projects that bring you into contact with managers from the sector. In particular, you'll undertake a research project for the global attractions company Merlin Entertainments in Semester 1 where you analyse their operations and policies, develop solutions to a particular challenge and report back directly to their managers.

The hospitality and tourism management program prepares students to step into numerous mid-level hospitality and tourism management and government policy positions. The program is focused on hospitality business planning, branding, economic management, and development of quality processes to deliver exceptional leadership within many service and corporate settings and at post-secondary academic institutions.

Plan of study

The program introduces major concepts associated with all aspects of hospitality, tourism, and business management, whether they are applied specifically to the hospitality-tourism industry or the wider service industry. Among the general concepts investigated are hospitality business development and marketing quality. Electives allow in depth study in specialized areas of hospitality manangement, such as resorts and attractions, travel and tourism, conventions and events, technology, and human resource development.

Students must complete a minimum of 30 credit hours. The curriculum is a combination of required core courses in hospitality and tourism management and elective courses chosen by the student to meet career interests and objectives. Students complete a graduate project or a comprehensive exam. A thesis option is available with approval. Course offerings generally are scheduled for evenings or via online learning to facilitate part-time students.

Core courses

Core courses explore essential hospitality and tourism business issues such as teamwork, strategic organizational change, financial and service performance metrics, development and marketing of resorts and attractions, and branding. Each course not only introduces the service philosophy but also examines the real differences in hospitality-service management outcomes necessitated by the adoption of a new service paradigm.

Electives

Elective courses provide students with an opportunity to individualize their graduate program in line with their career and professional interests. With the approval of the department chair, students are allowed to take a selection of elective courses from outside the program. Courses may be taken from the service leadership and innovation program, the human resource development program, and Saunders College of Business. Students are cautioned to observe course prerequisites in their selections.

Of the six credit hours of electives, students are relatively free to select courses they feel best meet their needs. All elective courses must be graduate-level. If previous course work exists, students may request a transfer of credits. A limited number of credit hours may be taken as independent study or practicum courses.

Project/Capstone/Thesis options

Students must successfully complete a graduate project or comprehensive exam as a culminating experience allowing for demonstration of competencies in theory and applications for the discipline. Students work with the program adviser and/or program faculty to determine a topic for the graduate project and must arrange a faculty mentor for the project. The comprehensive exam option is open to all students. Students may request the thesis option, but must be approved and have secured a faculty mentor.
