The CUHK MSc in Management of Real Estate and Hospitality Assets Program delivers world class and state of the art knowledge in global real estate and hospitality assets. The program of study is based in Hong Kong leveraging upon the locational advantage of Hong Kong as a leader of the real estate and hospitality industries in Asia.

The real estate industry is an important pillar of the economies in Asia and the hospitality industry is one of the largest and fastest growing industries in China and Asia. As the economies in Asia grow, the real estate industries in these economies also grow in prominence. The hospitality industry, in turn, is associated with real estate development, including hotels, serviced apartments, resorts, spas, theme parks, timeshares, shopping centers, airports, gaming, casinos and other entertainment venues.

In addition to the high quality standardized courses, this business program will specifically teach students how to analyze and execute investment propositions in the real estate and hospitality industries given the rapidly changing institutional and economic environment in Hong Kong, Mainland China and Asia. The MSc in Management in Real Estate and Hospitality Assets program aims to cultivate senior level management in these industries, with the objectives of allowing graduates to achieve the following:

Study Abroad

Qualified students are eligible to undertake a study abroad service learning trip which provides rewarding experiences and opportunities to do community service across the globe.

This trip operates annually in May and is 10 to 15 days in length.

Course overview

This Masters course takes a social science approach to tourism and hospitality and combines it with practical skills for the workplace. We have designed our stimulating course to give you a head start in the tourism and hospitality sectors, which are part of one of the world’s largest industries.

We welcome applications from graduates of any discipline. You will learn theoretical approaches through modules such as ‘Critical Tourism Theory and Methods’ and ‘International Tourism and Development’. There is also a core module in ‘Hospitality Management Studies’. We organise field trips and company visits to put your learning into context and we offer an optional work-based learning module.

The final phase of the course is a major project that you negotiate with your tutors to reflect your particular interests and chosen career path. For example, your project could have special relevance to the skill sets required by hotel managers, resort coordinators or restaurant entrepreneurs.

This course is based on the banks of the River Wear at The Sir Tom Cowie Campus at St Peter’s. It includes a board room as well as bookable areas to hold meetings and to meet with staff and visitors from outside the University.

University Library Services
The St Peter’s Library is excellent for tourism and there’s a full-time librarian who is dedicated to the Business and Tourism sections.
Further resources are available at the main Murray Library, which has a total of over 430,000 books with many more available through the inter-library loan service. You will benefit from a wide range of journals and periodicals, many of them in an online format. The University spends around £1 million every year on new books and resources.

IT provision
When it comes to IT provision you can take your pick from hundreds of PCs as well as Apple Macs in the David Goldman Informatics Centre and St Peter’s Library. There are also free WiFi zones throughout the campus. If you have any problems, just ask the friendly helpdesk team.

Teaching, learning and assessment

You will attend lectures and seminars, work in groups, complete case studies, participate in field trips, carry out independent learning, participate in discussions, develop ideas, and engage with experiential learning. Assessment methods include management reports, essays, and reflection on practice and group work with presentations. A unique aspect of the course is the challenge to design, lead and reflect upon a hospitality project that focuses on an external business partner. You will be expected to frame this challenge towards the hospitality sector. Central to the course experience is the regular involvement of guest speakers and field trips which provide valuable insights into practice, contemporary trends and thinking. Class sizes are normally 10-30.

Teaching hours and attendance

Modules you study on-campus require you to attend classes and carry out independent work. Attendance requirements at QMU depend on which module you are studying and whether you are full or part-time. All credit-based postgraduate courses at the School of Sport and Service Management offer the Professional-Based Learning module.

The module offers you an opportunity to undertake practical experience in a work environment and gain invaluable first-hand knowledge. If you already hold the Level 7 Postgraduate Diploma in Tourism and Hospitality Management from either the Confederation for Tourism and Hospitality (CTH) or the Organisations for Tourism and Hospitality Management (OTHM) you can top-up your qualification to a full MSc by studying a research methods module and researching and writing a 20,000 word dissertation.

The degree is jointly delivered with ESHotels in Paris enabling you to integrate with students from this course when you jointly participate on a field trip.

Teaching and learning

Classroom teaching includes a mix of traditional lectures, seminars, workshops and guest lectures from industry stakeholders. We undertake a real life business development scenario with our industry partner Merlin Entertainments and undertake a residential field trip in Semester 2.

The nature of the teaching and assessment will allow you to apply the theories and processes learnt in class to their preferred setting (e.g. public or private sector; tourism or hospitality industries; UK, European or International).

We are currently negotiating a partnership with InHolland University, Amsterdam, where you could study Semester 1 in Amsterdam and complete Semester 2 and the dissertation at LSBU (This option is open to UK and EU students only).

The course develops the appropriate skills, tools and knowledge to operate innovatively in the global tourism and hospitality environments. The nature of the teaching and assessment allows you to apply the theories and processes learnt in class to your preferred setting (e.g public or private sector; tourism or hospitality industries; related policy and government organisations; UK, European or international).

Placements

If you are a home or EU student you may wish to consider undertaking a voluntary year-long work placement in the UK or overseas to gain, extend or seek variety in your experience within the industry prior to studying with us. If you undertake such a placement you may use this as the basis for an extended industry-related management project instead of the traditional dissertation. This is subject to prior approval by the Course Director and must be an investigation into an aspect of management that is worthy of investigation and is subject to the usual academic discipline.

This option is not open to overseas students, as Home Office regulations mean that overseas students are unable to get a visa for the placement year.

Professional links

We have a wide range of industry speakers on the course and you undertake a range of projects that bring you into contact with managers from the sector. In particular, you'll undertake a research project for the global attractions company Merlin Entertainments in Semester 1 where you analyse their operations and policies, develop solutions to a particular challenge and report back directly to their managers.

Tourism is an international service industry and so you can probably expect a busy, fast-paced job wherever you decide to specialise, interacting with different people and organisations around the globe.

Our LSBU post graduates work around the world. Many work for international companies, tourist boards, policy and development institutes, acquiring senior management skills as they progress.

The nature of the industry - the large majority of organisations in the sector are small to medium enterprises (SMEs) - also provides opportunities for you to start your own business. Web-based tour operations, restaurants and events management companies are all popular options for start-ups. You certainly have choices over the route you take into this vast sector.

There is a worldwide shortage of well qualified tourism and hospitality managers, particularly in Asia, and this professional Masters qualification will help you to progress your career. If you are academically minded this could also be a positive step towards a PhD and academic career.

Core Modules

Strategic Marketing (20 credits)
Explore the process and application of marketing management and strategy to the characteristics of the global tourism and hospitality industries. You will critique marketing concepts, tactics and strategy alternatives in order to understand the internal and external marketing environment.

International Tourism & Tourists (20 credits)
Develop skills, knowledge and understanding of international tourism and tourists through the analysis of international tourism destinations and organisations, the tourism supply chain, tourism demand and global forces which might impact on the sustainability of tourism systems.

Hospitality - Past, Present & Future (20 credits)
Study the history of the hospitality industry and the changes that have influenced its evolution. You will study the expansion from local to national markets and assess possibilities for the future.

Strategic Management (20 credits)
Gain an in-depth understanding of the concepts and techniques of Strategic Management and how to apply this knowledge to the service sector.

Research Methods (20 credits)
Examine the research needs and major influences affecting the design and execution of a robust investigation related to your field of study.

Research Project (40 credits)
Pursue a significant/extended individual research activity relating learning from your taught modules to the analysis of a particular issue related to the field study. The process will offer you the opportunity to advance research skills both academically and through practical application.

Human Resource Management (20 credits)
Gain an understanding of the definitions, concepts and theories that underpin human resource management. You will evaluate traditional and contemporary industry practices and explore the issues that make an impact on the management of human resources in the tourism and hospitality industries.

Alexandra's main interests include social marketing, alcohol retailing and alcohol advertising. She has a national and international reputation in the field of corporate social responsibilities, working with organisations such as Meeting Professionals International (Dallas), Best Bar None and National Pubwatch. Alexandra has engaged with 30 European Universities in an ERASMUS funded project to investigate alcoholic and non-alcoholic consumption patterns across Europe and sits on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Advertising Research.
