Placements

The MSc Health Management includes placements, projects, and internship opportunities.

Health management consultancy is a placement that is part of the academic requirement of the course. Consultancies address a wide range of issues: strategy development, operational efficiency, new technologies and business start-ups. Consultancy teams are directed by the client, and facilitated and supported by the MHM academic team.

Technology transfer and marketisation projects provide opportunities for training and mentoring in commercialisation, on-the-job learning in multi-disciplinary teams and in some cases the opportunity to join a start-up management team.

Internship opportunities are available through the MHM Intern Development Programme. This offers opportunities with some of the most influential healthcare organisations in London. Internships are three-month periods of work experience, and opportunities to leverage career experience and direction. These are in the winter and spring semesters, as the health management consultancy placement is completed in the summer semester.

Our philosophy is to base our teaching on real-world issues in facilities management (FM) at high-performing organisations in both the private and public sectors. Our students develop the ability to think critically about all facets of the FM services - maintenance, engineering, projects, catering, cleaning, security and property management, by considering engineering and management theories and concepts and their applications to FM situations in these service lines. This allows our students to use their experience to explore these applications in their current or future careers.

The majority of graduates are engaged at a senior level in facility management operations, consultancy or design. Some students use the MSc as a foundation for subsequent MPhil/PhD research. The increasing burden of chronic illness is one of the greatest challenges facing health systems globally. In the UK, approximately 18 million people live with a long term or chronic condition and this number is expected to double by 2030. Approximately 80% of GP consultations, 60% of days spent in hospital and two thirds of all emergency hospital admissions are associated with chronic conditions (Department of Health 2004).

Managing long term and chronic conditions currently accounts for almost 70% of the NHS budget and these costs are projected to increase significantly given the ageing population and escalating risk factors such as obesity and inactivity.

Long term and chronic conditions can have profound and far reaching implications on all aspects of peoples’ lives and can present patients (and families) with a spectrum of needs.

People living with a long term or chronic condition require support, care and rehabilitation from a wide range of professionals in health, social and voluntary care sectors. In addition, effective health promotion, prevention, self-care and self-management will help ensure that chronic illnesses are avoided wherever possible and that people are more informed to safely and effectively manage their health and wellbeing.

This requires complex responses over extended periods of time, coordinated, proactive and collaborative input from the health, social care and voluntary sectors, patients, carers and lay personnel (as in the Expert Patient Programme). The MSc Long Term and Chronic Conditions is designed to be both multi-disciplinary and inter-professional and thereby mirror long term and chronic condition management within the National Health Service (NHS) and government initiatives.

This course is structured as either a one year full-time or three year part-time modular taught Master's degree. The core structure is based around a holistic approach to long term and chronic conditions management, coupled with research.

The MSc Global Healthcare Management with Professional Experience, is an extended full-time Masters programme with a substantive professional experience component. Within the professional experience modules, students have the option of undertaking an internship with an external organisation or, campus-based professional experience. Learning and teaching will be facilitated by a team of highly qualified and academic staff from within the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health who have relevant subject expertise in business, health and social care and management and leadership
Interprofessional learning across a range of modules, in which students will learn alongside their peers on other health and social care related MSc programmes in the School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health.

As part of the programme, students will complete the Global Professional Development module which has been developed in collaboration with the Chartered Management Institute (CMI) affording students who meet the CMI evidence requirements a Level 7 Certificate in Strategic Management and Leadership and a Level 7 Award in Professional Consulting. Successful completion of the module will also enable students to apply for Chartered Manager status via the qualified route.

WHAT WILL I LEARN?

You will study a range of modules which provide a detailed understanding of leadership and management combined with examination of contemporary and global challenges within healthcare management.

The course will feature a range of current and management theories relevant to the health and social care sectors. In addition, it will also explore multi-cultural and international dimensions of healthcare management. The programme will also develop students’ entrepreneurial skills and offer support with seeking employment opportunities.

Understanding gained from these modules will be demonstrated and applied in either the university-based Management Project (General) for those students on the full-time (12 month) and part-time (24 month) programmes or the Postgraduate Professional Experience Project for those students on the full-time (20 month programme).

Objectives

With several medical conditions requiring extensive and continuous monitoring and early and accurate diagnosis becoming increasingly desirable, technology for biomedical applications is rapidly becoming one of the key ingredients of today and tomorrow’s medical care.

From miniaturised home diagnostic instruments to therapeutic devices and to large scale hospital imaging and monitoring systems, healthcare is becoming increasingly dependent on technology. This course meets the growing need for biomedical and clinical engineers across the world by focusing on the design of medical devices from conception to application.

One of the few accredited courses of its kind in London, the programme concentrates on the use of biomedical-driven engineering design and technology in healthcare settings so you can approach this multidisciplinary topic from the biological and medical perspective; the technological design and development perspective; and from the perspective of managing the organisation and maintenance of large scale equipment and IT systems in a hospital.

This MSc in Biomedical Engineering with Healthcare Technology Management course has been created in consultation and close collaboration with clinicians, biomedical engineering researchers and medical technology industrial partners. The programme fosters close links with the NHS and internationally-renowned hospitals including St. Bartholomew's (Barts) and the Royal London Hospital and Great Ormond street so that you can gain a comprehensive insight into the applied use and the management of medical technology and apply your knowledge in real-world clinical settings.

Placements

In the last few years there have been some limited opportunities for our top students to carry out their projects through placements within hospital-based healthcare technology groups or specialist London-based biomedical technology companies. Placement-based projects are also offered to selected students in City’s leading Research Centre for Biomedical Engineering (RCBE). As we continue our cutting-edge research and industrial and clinical collaborations, you will also have this opportunity.

Academic facilities

As a student on this course you will have the opportunity to work with cutting-edge test and measurement instrumentation – oscilloscopes, function generators, analysers – as well as specialist signal generators and analysers. The equipment is predominantly provided by the world-leading test and measurement equipment manufacturer Keysight, who have partnered with City to provide branding to our electronics laboratories. You also have access to brand new teaching labs and a dedicated postgraduate teaching lab. And as part of the University of London you can also become a member of Senate House Library for free with your student ID card.

Teaching and learning

You will be taught through face-to-face lectures in small groups, where there is a lot of interaction and feedback. Laboratory sessions run alongside the lectures, giving you the opportunity to develop your problem-solving and design skills. You also learn software skills in certain modules, which are taught inside computer labs. We also arrange hospital visits so you gain hands-on experience of different clinical environments.

We arrange tutorials for setting coursework, highlight important subject areas, conduct practical demonstrations, and offer support with revision. You are assessed by written examinations at the end of each term, and coursework assignments, which are set at various times throughout the term.

You also work towards an individual project, which is assessed in the form of a written thesis and an oral examination at the end of the summer. The project can be based on any area of biomedical engineering, telemedicine or technology management and will be supervised by an academic or clinical scientist with expertise in the subject area. Many projects are based in hospital clinical engineering departments, or if you are a part-time student, you can base the project on your own workplace. You will have regular contact with the supervisor to make sure the project progresses satisfactorily. Some of the programme’s current students are working on a project focusing on devices that use brain signals to move external objects such as a remote control car and a prosthetic arm.

Some of the previous projects students have worked on include:
-A cursor controller based on electrooculography (EOG)
-Modelling a closed-loop automated anaesthesia system
-Design of a movement artefact-resistant wearable heart rate/activity monitor
-Review of progress towards a fully autonomous artificial mechanical heart
-Design of smartphone-based healthcare diagnostic devices and sensors.

If you successfully complete eight modules and the dissertation you will be awarded 180 credits and a Masters level qualification. Alternatively, if you do not complete the dissertation but have successfully completed eight modules, you will be awarded 120 credits and a postgraduate diploma. Completing four modules (60 credits) will lead to a postgraduate certificate.

Along with the 60 credit dissertation eight core modules cover diverse subject areas including biomedical electronics and instrumentation, technology infrastructure management, as well as the latest advances in medical imaging and patient monitoring.

Course details

You will study the principles and practice of advanced airway assessment and management, advanced breathing assessment and management, advanced circulation assessment and management, and advanced neurological assessment and management. Gain an intimate understanding of brain anatomy and physiology in relation to brain injury, advance your knowledge of pain management, and learn the principles and practices of delivering critical care to specialist patient groups.

To gain a postgraduate certificate, you’ll need to earn 60 credits - you’ll study three modules worth 20 credits each. To gain a postgraduate diploma, you’ll need to earn 120 credits. To be awarded the full masters degree, you’ll need to earn a total of 180 credits. You’ll study the same core modules as the postgraduate diploma, with the extra 60 credits coming from your research dissertation.

A master's program about the impact of globalization and intercultural communication:
Globalization means movement. People, images, symbols, information, capital, goods and so on increasingly move from one corner of the world to another and people communicate with other people many miles away. As a consequence, individual people are increasingly being confronted with (all kinds of) different influences and ideas from other parts of the world.

About collaboration between people with different cultural backgrounds and world views:

On entry to the course you will choose a pathway in research or management.

Teaching and Assessment:

The course uses a combination of lectures, workshops, visiting speakers and self-directed study. You will enjoy a stimulating learning environment and will be taught by experts from a variety of academic disciplines and professional backgrounds.
You should be prepared for a challenging experience that requires a significant commitment in terms of both time and energy. For example, a 30 credit module represents 300 hours of learning, of which only 35 hours is likely to be class time.

There are no formal exams. Continuous assessment is by module-based assignments, essays, assessed presentations, reports and mini-projects, plus a research-based dissertation.

To obtain the MA, you complete a dissertation of 18,000–20,000 words under the guidance of an individual supervisor. A Postgraduate Certificate can be awarded on completion of 60 credits, Postgraduate Diploma awarded on completion of 120 credits, and the MA on completion of 180 credits.

Expertise:

Staff are specialists from various academic and professional disciplines and bring a wide range of experience as well as engagement in relevant research. Health Policy is taught by Professor Rob Baggott and Dr Sally Ruane, who are director and deputy director, respectively, of the Health Policy Research Unit. Dr Sally Ruane is also the course leader and specialises
in health service reform and public-private partnerships.

Professor Brown, who leads psychology research within the university, teaches research methods in health and social care,
with Mr Julian Stribling who brings a background in nursing, and research in family history of heart disease and risk perception. Mr Simon Moralee qualified in health services management at York and Birmingham universities and has several years’ experience working as an NHS manager. Dr Scott Yates, whose research interests include disability and young people in hospital, teaches the philosophical underpinnings of social research.

This course attracts students from a diverse range of disciplines from across the world, including health service managers, community workers, general practice managers, nurses, health visitors, health promotion workers, and members of the professions allied to medicine.
