Primatology is a discipline that has its roots in anatomy, biology, anthropology and psychology. This course covers a comprehensive range of topics within primatology and combines theoretical investigation with fieldwork and laboratory sessions. It also offers intensive training in research methods and statistics.

Recent examples of topics covered include social behaviour, cognition, endocrinology, ranging and habitat use, social networks, human-wildlife conflict, morphology and brain size evolution.

The University of Roehampton has established networks with leading institutions and field sites including the Zoological Society of London , German Primate Centre, Gashaka Primate Project (Nigeria), Trentham Monkey Forest (UK), and Berenty Reserve (Madagascar).

You will be taught by leading experts in the field who carry out their own world-leading research.

Content

You will begin the year by studying an in-depth a range of topics in primatology, as well as learning the theory and practice of primatological research. After your first semester, the emphasis will be on independent study, where you will be undertaking a substantial piece of original research. You will develop your intellectual, practical and analytical skills to devise a viable project proposal. You will carry out your project and produce both a dissertation and a paper suitable for submission to a peer-reviewed scientific journal. Many of our graduates have subsequently published their work in international journals such as Biology Letters, American Journal of Primatology, International Journal of Primatology, Animal Behaviour and Biological Conservation.

Students’ field work lasts for three months, usually from March to May. You will have the support of your supervisor in arranging data collection for your research project. In the laboratory, students have used geographic information systems to explore ranging behaviour, analysed parasites from wild primates and performed non-invasive hormone analysis.

MSc Health Psychology provides an advanced training in fundamental theoretical, methodological and empirical areas of Health Psychology. The course addresses key contemporary themes within health psychology such as the psychosocial models of disease and contemporary methodological approaches to health psychology research the development and evaluation of health interventions

UCLan’s postgraduate Health Psychology is a British Psychology Society-accredited postgraduate professional training course. It fulfils Stage I postgraduate training requirements in health psychology. In conjunction with Stage II postgraduate training, it equips you for practice as a Registered Health Psychologist with the Health and Care Professions Council and eligibility for Chartered status with the British Psychological Society.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENT AND ASSESSMENT

The course is based in the School of Psychology, housed in the purpose-built Darwin Building. This building offers specialist teaching and research facilities, including Sport and Exercise Psychology Laboratories, Health Psychology Suite, Cognitive Psychology Laboratories, Brain Imaging Laboratory, Video Observation Suite, Biomechanics Laboratory, and Sport Physiology Laboratory. The building also includes a state-of-the-art lecture theatre, teaching and computer rooms.

Teaching is delivered primarily in small interactive sessions. Assessment is achieved through a combination of coursework assignments (essays, reports, statistical exercises, presentations) and research project.

OPPORTUNITIES

This is Part One of a two-stage postgraduate training in Health Psychology leading to Registration as a Health Psychologist with the HCPC and Chartered status with the BPS. Registered Health Psychologists work in academic and health settings, teaching students and health professionals, research, assessing patients, managing clinical interventions, informing health promotion and public health policy.

Commended by the Division of Health Psychology Training Committee (DHPTC), this course has been recognised for its excellence in handling the core curriculum, investment in the infrastructure for health psychology research, very high level of student satisfaction, and for the enthusiasm of the teaching team.

MSc Health Psychology provides an advanced training in fundamental theoretical, methodological and empirical areas of Health Psychology. The course addresses key contemporary themes within health psychology such as the psychosocial models of disease (eg the link between stress and heart disease), the development and evaluation of health interventions (eg smoking cessation or nutritional education), and contemporary methodological approaches to health psychology research (eg salivary hormone assessment of stress, auditing daily life stress, advanced methods in research design). A substantial component of the course is the advanced research project. You are encouraged to develop your expertise in an area of special interest under the supervision of a member of the course team whose research experience complements your interests.

As part of the professional training route for Registered Health Psychologists, the MSc in Health Psychology will develop your expertise in key health psychology competencies, and equip you to work in a range of academic and clinical settings. The training will prepare you to apply psychology research/methodologies in the prevention and management of disease, the promotion of health behaviours, the identification of risk factors for disease, the assessment of health care systems, or the development of health policy. This course is divided into three single-module courses, two half-module courses, one double-module course, and a three-module research dissertation. Two-thirds of the course is devoted to advancing students' knowledge in the core curriculum areas identified by the BPS. The remaining third is comprised of the advanced research project, an opportunity to conduct a major piece of empirical work in an area of special interest, and an exercise which gives the student the opportunity to demonstrate their skills in research design, data collection, analysis, and interpretation.

The MSc programmes in Biology & Biochemistry are designed for students who wish to specialise further in a particular field or wish to change direction from their first degree (in a related area).

Molecular Plant Scientists attempt to understand the biology of plants at the molecular level. We study, in particular, mechansims of microbial pathogenicity and host plant defence in temperate and tropical species, cell and molecular biology of pollen-stigma recognition and signalling in flowering plants, plant hormone and G protein signalling pathways, genomics and gene networks, and molecular biology of stress responses in the important tropical crop cassava.

The MRes provides a unique mix of taught components, extended laboratory projects, literature reviews and preparation of a grant proposal based on a research dissertation.It gives students an insight into a range of state-of-the-art research activities and techniques, and provides generic, transferable skills training needed for all early stage researchers.

The programmes also address the scientific, ethical and commercial context within which the research takes place.

All of the MRes programmes can be studied as the first year of our Integrated PhD programme.

Our Cancer MRes is a research-based course with a taught component that is equivalent to an MSc. It provides a springboard into a career that involves a working knowledge of scientific research.

The course is designed for graduates with a BSc in the life sciences or other science disciplines, and for intercalating and fully qualified MBBS or BDS students. It can be taken either as a stand-alone qualification or as an entry route onto a PhD or MD.

The taught component of the course includes subject-specific content in the area of cancer research. You have the flexibility to develop your own bespoke course by selecting additional, complementary modules. You will also receive itraining in general research principles, and other professional and key skills. Subject-based modules cover:
-Clinical and pathological aspects of cancer
-Molecular mechanisms that establish and promote cancer
-Current treatments and how research translates into novel treatments

Your research project comprises the major element of the course. This project will involve 24 weeks of research in an area of cancer research under the supervision of an expert academic researcher in the field. Projects are undertaken in laboratories actively engaged in cancer research. Examples are:
-Roles of tumour suppressor genes

If you want to pursue a research career in academia or industry, our MSc Cancer Biology will provide you with the essential advanced skills and knowledge for a role in biopharma, healthcare or cancer research. We offer many opportunities for you to explore medically relevant research in the School of Biological Sciences including hospital-based sessions through our collaboration with local cancer specialists and clinicians.

An important and exciting part of your programme is an extensive independent research project, based in one of our academic research groups using advanced laboratories facilities and bioinformatics tools. There are also opportunities for research projects to take place within an industrial or clinical setting.

Throughout the course, you develop your knowledge in the essential areas of molecular and cellular biology which complement your specialist modules in cancer biology. You gain expertise in areas including:
-Specific cancer types (including breast, prostate, pancreatic and colon cancer)
-Clinical aspects of cancer
-Emerging trends in cancer research

You are also trained in modern research methods and approaches which will develop your skills in complex biological data analysis and specific techniques in cancer research.

Within our School of Biological Sciences, two-thirds of our research is rated “world-leading” or “internationally excellent” (REF 2014), and you will learn from and work alongside our expert staff as you undertake your own research.

The team includes the course leader Professor Elena Klenova (molecular oncology and cancer biomarkers), Dr Ralf Zwacka (apoptotic and survival signalling in cancer), Dr Greg Brooke (steroid hormone receptor signalling in cancer), Dr Metodi Metodiev (clinical proteomics and bioinformatics), Dr Pradeepa Madapura (cancer epigenetics), Dr Vladimir Teif (computational and systems biology), Professor Nelson Fernandez (tumour immunology) and Dr Filippo Prischi (structural biology and biophysics of novel drug targets).

External experts also input to your teaching, including guest speakers from hospitals and research institutions, who deliver classes both on-campus and within the hospital environment.
