This award enables the development of higher levels of knowledge and skills in Advanced Clinical Practice at the depth and breadth appropriate to Master’s level work. By using a blended learning approach, the award creates a practice-focused, student-centred, flexible programme that develops student capabilities to:
-Challenge Advanced Clinical Practice
-Engage in independent evidence-based decision making
-Determine creative and innovative solutions to practice issues
-Develop analytical and intellectual skills at Masters level

This part time three year programme comprises of both practice and academic based learning. The clinical focus of the award is a direct result of the continuing need to develop the role of Advanced Clinical Practitioner.

The expanding clinical role is assisted by linking the student with a clinical preceptor who is an expert in the student's clinical speciality. The student will also receive support for personal and professional development from a senior clinical lead of the same profession who acts as a mentor for the duration of the award.

Course outline

This award is designed to offer you a flexible programme of learning. The programme includes 150 credits of Award core modules and 30 credits of Award option modules. The option modules provide opportunity for your development in professional studies and/or clinical care in areas that meet the learning outcomes and clinical competencies of the Award, and you will normally study modules in the following sequence when exploring these themes:

The award has three potential exit points: The award is flexible in that it allows you study modules in the PgC and PgD in any order, however you cannot be awarded a PgC or PgD until the modules for each stage have been completed.
-The postgraduate certificate (PgC) in Advanced Health Assessment and Clinical Decision Making can be awarded following successful completion of PgC modules to the value of 60 level 7 credits.
-The postgraduate diploma (PgD) in Advancing Clinical Practice can be awarded following successful completion of PgC and PgD modules to the value of 120 level 7 credits or 30 level 6 credits (Independent Supplementary Prescribing ONLY) and 90 level 7 credits.
-Once you have successfully completed the Postgraduate diploma, you are eligible to register for the Masters project or dissertation. The award of Master of Science (MSc) in Advanced Clinical Practice will be awarded following successful completion of modules to the value of 30 level 6 credits and 150 level 7 credits or 180 level 7 credits.

In order to progress from one stage of an award to another (i.e. PgC to PgD, PgD to Masters), you must complete the proceeding stage although you are free to study modules can be undertaken in any order.

Employment opportunities

This award will equip you with the skills and knowledge to look for a position as an Advanced Clinical Practitioner in NHS or Independent Heath Provision. However the course does not provide automatic qualification for employment in these roles as some practitioner roles may require specialist experience and knowledge outside the remit of the course content. However, it should provide a stepping stone to these positions as they occur.

The PGCE Secondary Science course with an enhancement in Biology, Chemistry or Physics leads to a professional qualification to enable you to enter the teaching profession in a secondary school as a Science teacher with a subject specialism. During the course you will develop subject knowledge across all three science areas, along with practical skills and an understanding of pedagogical issues related to teaching Science in the 11-16 with post 16 enhancement range. In addition you will follow a pathway based on your degree qualification and experience that will enhance your understanding of the teaching of Biology, Chemistry or Physics at Key Stage 4.

Learning and Teaching in Science

Several learning and teaching themes are developed throughout the year including safe management of laboratory practical work, teaching outside the classroom, how science works, contemporary issues in science teaching, using models and analogies, literacy, differentiation, use of games, pupil misconceptions, using ICT, inclusion, questioning techniques and citizenship. At all times you are supported by well qualified and experienced tutors.

School Experience

You will spend the majority of your time on the course in schools, developing your teaching skills. You will complete two main teaching placements at different secondary schools; one of 8 weeks and a second longer placement of 12 weeks. During both placements you are likely to have the opportunity teach science across Key Stages 3 and 4 and teach your specialism (biology, physics or chemistry) at Key Stage 4. During your placements your professional development will be supported by both the school and Newman tutors. Newman has an excellent reputation with local schools for providing a strong partnership with schools that support students during their placements. You will also work in a primary school for a short placement, looking at science teaching methods across earlier key stages. Applicants for admission to graduate research degrees in Mathematics should have or expect to have a good honours degree (equivalent of 2.i or higher) in Mathematics, or a good honours degree in which Mathematics has formed a substantial part of the course. Applicants whose first language is not English are referred to the English Language Requirements of the University of York. In order to apply for a place on our MSc (by Research), we ask that you first submit an online application. We cannot accept a CV or any other documentation sent by email in place of a formal application. You should submit either a research proposal or an explanation (in your own words) of why you wish to undertake a research degree in your chosen field. This document should be about 1,000-1,500 words in length.

Description of course

The MSc by research is a one year degree (if taken full-time). It involves writing a Master's thesis under the supervision of a member of academic staff on a topic to be agreed between the supervisor and the student. Submission is required no more than three months after the end of registration, although submission before the end of registration is encouraged where possible.

The MSc by research is assessed wholly on the basis of the thesis although the course may include an individually tailored element of taught courses to be taken in the early stage of the year. Work on the thesis is guided by regular meetings between student and supervisor and monitored by two meetings of the student's Thesis Advisory Panel, usually to be held in November and March (for October starts). The thesis must contain a substantial piece of research which includes some original work. This could include new ideas, or original commentary on (or amplification of) material which is currently considered to be at the forefront of mathematical knowledge.

MSc by research students have access to all of the transferable skills training programmes available to MPhil and PhD students and will be expected to take part in the induction week (usually the first week of the Autumn term), as well as the Becoming an Effective Researcher course from the Researcher Development Team which is obligatory for all research students.

Information on assessment

The thesis is to be examined by one internal examiner (who should not be the supervisor) and one external examiner, the appointment of which must follow the usual practice for MPhil and PhD examiners. The candidate will be required to give an internal seminar, to be attended by the internal examiner. This is part of the process of verifying that the thesis is the candidate's own work. A viva will not usually be required, but examiners may insist on one at their discretion.

Each examiner produces an independent report and makes a recommendation either for the award (perhaps subject to minor corrections) or against the award (sometimes with a referral for resubmission after more substantial corrections).

What is special about this course?

Are you interested in the science of human behaviour and thought? Are you thinking about a career change or interested in how psychology might contribute to your existing career or interest? If so, this MSc Psychology Conversion* is ideal.

This intense, online course will provide you with a broad and critical awareness of psychological theory and practice. Throughout the course you will develop an understanding of what drives people's behaviour, why we are unique and in what ways we are the same, and explore the theories which explain human behaviour and how they are relevant in today's society.

You will examine the core fields of psychology including biological, individual differences, cognitive, and social and developmental psychology, as set out by the British Psychological Society (BPS).

Alongside acquiring the key concepts and core knowledge of psychology, you will build strong project management, analytical and report writing skills. Your learning experience will culminate in a substantial research project/dissertation, for which you will have support from your supervisor.

Application for accreditation by the BPS has been submitted*. This is the first step towards becoming a Chartered Psychologist.

Two face-to-face, long-weekend residentials are held in Inverness in August/September and March/April. You must attend these to be eligible for BPS registration on graduation.

How will it benefit me?

Completion of this award will be representative of an individual’s commitment and on-going industrial Continuous Professional Development (CPD) as required by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS). Entry requirements

The programmes are offered at different levels of study, therefore for each award there is a different entry requirement:

UCDip (level 5)

Candidates should have at least five GCSEs at grade C or above, or equivalent. These should normally include English, Mathematics and a Science or their equivalent. Candidates should also be able to provide evidence of a sufficient standard of core educational skills to benefit from, and succeed in higher education and substantial industrial and professional experience and responsibility or an NVQ at level FE2,3 or 4 as appropriate.

For candidates with no higher education qualifications, such experience should normally be of 5 years or more.

PgC / PgD / MSc

For admission to the University College PgC/PgD/MSc Veterinary Pharmacy candidates would be expected to have obtained a minimum of an upper second class degree in Pharmacy or a related animal science subject.

Applications may also be considered from candidates with a lower second class honours degree, Foundation Degree or good HND (together with related industrial or professional experience of at least two years) or a Graduate Diploma/Graduate Certificate or equivalent. Programme description

The building services engineering profession is a vibrant and important component of both the construction and engineering sectors of industry. The MSc Building Services Engineering is aimed at engineering graduates to enable them to progress towards full chartered (CEng) status.

There is a strong demand for good quality chartered building services engineers who have the wide and multi-disciplinary knowledge that enables them to operate effectively on projects involving diverse technical challenges. Engineers now require a period of postgraduate study after achieving an Honours degree on an accredited BEng programme before they can become eligible for chartered (CEng) status. The MSc Building Services Engineering programme has been designed primarily as a period of further learning to follow an honours degree in building services engineering or environmental engineering.

The programme offers you the opportunity to broaden your knowledge and experience of all technical aspects of building services design as well as providing an understanding of building management.

Assessment

Various methods are used to assess the modules depending on the nature of the module. These include written examination, course work, and oral presentation. Normally there is more than one assessment component in each module.
