The material that is currently in the Mathematics programme covers a wide range of topics including mathematical biology, fluid dynamics, magneto hydrodynamics and numerical analysis and scientific computing as well as core subjects such as analysis and mathematical methods.

This award enables the development of higher levels of knowledge and skills in Advanced Clinical Practice at the depth and breadth appropriate to Master’s level work. By using a blended learning approach, the award creates a practice-focused, student-centred, flexible programme that develops student capabilities to:
-Challenge Advanced Clinical Practice
-Engage in independent evidence-based decision making
-Determine creative and innovative solutions to practice issues
-Develop analytical and intellectual skills at Masters level

This part time three year programme comprises of both practice and academic based learning. The clinical focus of the award is a direct result of the continuing need to develop the role of Advanced Clinical Practitioner.

The expanding clinical role is assisted by linking the student with a clinical preceptor who is an expert in the student's clinical speciality. The student will also receive support for personal and professional development from a senior clinical lead of the same profession who acts as a mentor for the duration of the award.

Course outline

This award is designed to offer you a flexible programme of learning. The programme includes 150 credits of Award core modules and 30 credits of Award option modules. The option modules provide opportunity for your development in professional studies and/or clinical care in areas that meet the learning outcomes and clinical competencies of the Award, and you will normally study modules in the following sequence when exploring these themes:

The award has three potential exit points: The award is flexible in that it allows you study modules in the PgC and PgD in any order, however you cannot be awarded a PgC or PgD until the modules for each stage have been completed.
-The postgraduate certificate (PgC) in Advanced Health Assessment and Clinical Decision Making can be awarded following successful completion of PgC modules to the value of 60 level 7 credits.
-The postgraduate diploma (PgD) in Advancing Clinical Practice can be awarded following successful completion of PgC and PgD modules to the value of 120 level 7 credits or 30 level 6 credits (Independent Supplementary Prescribing ONLY) and 90 level 7 credits.
-Once you have successfully completed the Postgraduate diploma, you are eligible to register for the Masters project or dissertation. The award of Master of Science (MSc) in Advanced Clinical Practice will be awarded following successful completion of modules to the value of 30 level 6 credits and 150 level 7 credits or 180 level 7 credits.

In order to progress from one stage of an award to another (i.e. PgC to PgD, PgD to Masters), you must complete the proceeding stage although you are free to study modules can be undertaken in any order.

Employment opportunities

This award will equip you with the skills and knowledge to look for a position as an Advanced Clinical Practitioner in NHS or Independent Heath Provision. However the course does not provide automatic qualification for employment in these roles as some practitioner roles may require specialist experience and knowledge outside the remit of the course content. However, it should provide a stepping stone to these positions as they occur.

The Master of Biomedical Science Preliminary is designed for students interested in undertaking postgraduate research in biomedical sciences. A candidate is required to carry out a prescribed program of research for a specified period under the direct supervision of a member of the academic staff. The supervisor, in consultation with the candidate, is responsible for developing the research program to be followed by the candidate, and for reporting at regular intervals on the candidates progress.

The MBiomedSci Preliminary is designed for students who do not have the equivalent of a class 1 or class 2A honours degree in a relevant discipline. For graduates with only a Bachelor degree in a relevant field and who have not attempted honours in that field, admission to MBiomedSci Preliminary will normally require at least a credit grade average in 24 points of relevant third-year units, or appropriate additional training and experience.

Candidates must complete the MBiomedSci Preliminary program and obtain results equivalent to class 2A honours (H2A) or better for admission into Master of Biomedical Science. The MBiomedSci Preliminary is not an awardable degree. Candidates should complete their program of study within 12 months full-time or 24 months part-time. Students who pass MBiomedSci Preliminary of the program but who do not wish to continue or do not achieve class 2A honours or above will be offered the exit award of the Postgraduate Diploma in Biomedical Sciences.

Candidates will be required to undertake a major research thesis of 75% of the entire course. The thesis should embody the results of the candidates investigation, which demonstrates independence of thought and the candidates ability to carry out research in that discipline. The remaining 25% of the course will comprise coursework such as a literature review and/or statistics classes, and is specified by the enrolling department.

Career opportunities

Students who have completed the course will demonstrate an understanding of relevant research techniques in their field through a review of the relevant literature. They will demonstrate their ability, under supervision to apply relevant research techniques to their chosen field of study. Course Structure

An MSc is normally completed over 12-18 consecutive months, although it may be possible to study for the degree on a part-time basis. These taught papers may be assessed exclusively on coursework, examination, or a mixture of both. In the second year each student will normally enrol in the remaining research and taught papers required to complete the degree. The degree may be awarded with First Class Honours, or Second Class Honours (first division), or Second Class Honours (second division), or without Honours.

Practical experience

You will spend more time putting theory into practice in the laboratories and out in the field. Smaller class sizes in taught papers mean more one-on-one time with renowned academics.

Semester 1 exams are held in January and Semester 2 exams are held in June. Students will also be required to produce a thesis based on a research project preferably carried out at their place of work.

Second Class Honours in any science, engineering, medical or technology discipline. Candidates with a general (ie non-honours), or third class honours, B.Sc./B.E. can still apply provided they have at least three years relevant work experience.

Like our bachelor's programmes, the Sensor System Engineering master's is recognised as an honours programme, offering a challenging schedule to students. This means 10 ECs are added to the regular 60 ECs master's programme. We strive for students who are passionate about technology and committed to their own personal development. We select students who have an entrepreneurial style and who consider themselves to be world citizens. You will be expected to show creativity and the drive to discover new solutions by yourself. Naturally, you will be supported by the lecturing staff, as well as experts from industry, health and applied research.

Career perspectives

As a Master of Engineering you will qualify for a variety of jobs in the following domains. You can make a career in the health domain, developing products and services that involve sensor innovations for medical devices, domotics and home care. Another promising career move is to apply for a job in the technology domain, where you will develop technical sensor applications. A scientific research environment is another great place for you as a master. Here you will work alongside scientists who are focused on high tech research projects as genome sequencing or seismic monitoring systems.

Diploma

SSE is in the formal process of becoming an NVAO accredited HBO Master's Programme. After graduation you will receive a Master of Engineering diploma. The honours module is mentioned in the diploma and the diploma supplement. The Master of Arts (MA) degree normally requires at least one year of full-time, or its equivalent in part-time, study and entails completion of a thesis. The normal admission requirement is a Bachelor of Arts with Honours (BA(Hons)) degree in one of at least 24 subjects, but admission on the basis of alternative qualifications and experience is possible. Some degree candidates may be required to pass approved postgraduate papers before embarking on the thesis research, but will be advised of that before enrolment.

The thesis is a major piece of supervised research on a topic of current interest.

The primary aim of the programme is to develop in a candidate skills needed to identify a significant topic, design and implement an extended piece of research, and present the findings in a form acceptable to an expert readership. It prepares candidates for employment in education, regional and national government agencies, the private sector, and industry. The degree is also an entry qualification for the Doctor of Philsophy (PhD).

Structure of the Programme

-The degree may be awarded in any of the subjects listed above. With the approval of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Humanities) the degree may be awarded in a subject not listed above.
-The programme of study shall consist of the preparation and submission of a thesis embodying the results of supervised research. A candidate who has obtained a three-year bachelor’s degree will be required to take and pass the fourth-stage papers listed in the Honours requirements for the subject concerned, in addition to completing a thesis. A candidate whose qualification for entry to the programme is the degree of Bachelor of Arts with Honours, or the Postgraduate Diploma in Arts Subjects in the subject of the degree, will be required to complete a thesis, although in some cases the candidate may also be required to take and pass approved papers, normally at 400-level, in addition to completing a thesis.
-A candidate shall, before commencing the investigation to be described in the thesis, secure the approval of the Head of the Department concerned for the topic, the supervisor(s), and the proposed course of the investigation.
-A candidate may not present a thesis which has previously been accepted for another degree.
-For a thesis, the research should be of a kind that a diligent and competent student should complete within one year of full-time study.

The PGCE Secondary Science course with an enhancement in Biology, Chemistry or Physics leads to a professional qualification to enable you to enter the teaching profession in a secondary school as a Science teacher with a subject specialism. During the course you will develop subject knowledge across all three science areas, along with practical skills and an understanding of pedagogical issues related to teaching Science in the 11-16 with post 16 enhancement range. In addition you will follow a pathway based on your degree qualification and experience that will enhance your understanding of the teaching of Biology, Chemistry or Physics at Key Stage 4.

At interview you will need to indicate your interest in one or more of three pathways for this PGCE in secondary science. Your suitability for a particular pathway will be explored at interview and you bursary eligibility will depend on the subject specialism of your offer of a place from either:

Science with Biology

You will need to have a good honours degree and a substantial component of biology in your study. You may also consider applying for this pathway in combination with a Biology Subject Knowledge Enhancement Course. You need to demonstrate a commitment to the teaching of Biology.

Learning and Teaching in Science

You will explore the science curriculum at Key Stage 3 and 4 through practical work in chemistry, physics and biology that leads to the development of subject knowledge and pedagogical skills. These sessions will take place in newly built laboratories equipped to model modern school science facilities. Several learning and teaching themes are developed throughout the year including safe management of laboratory practical work, teaching outside the classroom, how science works, contemporary issues in science teaching, using models and analogies, literacy, differentiation, use of games, pupil misconceptions, using ICT, inclusion, questioning techniques and citizenship. At all times you are supported by well qualified and experienced tutors.

School Experience

You will spend the majority of your time on the course in schools, developing your teaching skills. You will complete two main teaching placements at different secondary schools; one of 8 weeks and a second longer placement of 12 weeks. During both placements you are likely to have the opportunity teach science across Key Stages 3 and 4 and teach your specialism (biology, physics or chemistry) at Key Stage 4. During your placements your professional development will be supported by both the school and Newman tutors. Newman has an excellent reputation with local schools for providing a strong partnership with schools that support students during their placements. You will also work in a primary school for a short placement, looking at science teaching methods across earlier key stages. The course offers further flexible opportunities for individual 'focus' weeks towards the end of training, where specialised areas can be further developed, including AS/A2 examinations and Education and Professional Studies links with science and your specialism.

Background

The University of Winnipeg and The University of Manitoba established four joint masters programs. The resources of both universities were thus made available for graduate work to the Masters level in these disciplines. Students enrolling in a Joint Masters Program enjoy at both universities all the rights and privileges normally accorded to graduate students; two months before their expected date of graduation they shall declare in writing the university from which they wish to receive their degree.

As part of the agreement establishing these Joint Masters Programs, it was arranged that administrative aspects, e.g. admission, registration, etc. would be entirely in the hands of the Faculty of Graduate Studies at The University of Manitoba. All prospective graduate students must complete the official application for admission to the Faculty of Graduate Studies at the University of Manitoba and consult with the Graduate Chair at The University of Winnipeg.

Religion

The Department of Religious Studies at The University of Winnipeg and the Department of Religion at The University of Manitoba offer a Joint Master of Arts Program. Graduates of either university who have completed a recognized pre-Master's program in Religion, or who hold a B.A.(Honours) in Religion, or have completed a program equivalent to a pre-Master's or Honours in any recognized university of college, are eligible to apply. University of Winnipeg students can also qualify for admission by completing the Bachelor of Arts (4-year) degree in Religious Studies. Applications will also be considered from B.A. (Honours) graduates in other disciplines with a strong background in Religious Studies. Students completing the Joint M.A. Program may elect to receive their degree from either of the participating universities.
