This one year, full time course has two distinct pathways; Sustainable Highways and Sustainable Railways.

  • Sustainability is more than a badge – assessing condition, assessing sustainability, diagnosis of faults, risk assessment and decision-making are pervasive features of all the engineering application topics covered by the courses, while the more fundamental topics in the MSc programme provide the tools to achieve these. Overall, this MSc programme seeks to show how advanced engineering techniques can best be applied in industry-relevant practice. Therefore it is biased more towards team-working and practice-related challenges, so as to test understanding and application skills, than towards narrow individual research studies.
  • It integrates physical understanding of the constituent materials of road and rail infrastructure and of their deterioration due to traffic and environment with modern techniques of condition assessment and asset management planning so as to extend reliable service lives, increase life-cycles and provide sustainable service for users. These threads run throughout our teaching. Tutor-led work in each semester provide a continuous thread of design development. This can lead into the summer period project.

The knowledge and understanding covers key areas of civil and infrastructure engineering and meets the needs of graduates seeking chartered status. It has significant input from the expertise of a blend of current practitioners and research-led academics, with inter-disciplinary teaching in design and sustainability modules; all of this is integrated and delivered within the principles and practice of sustainable development.

About

This technical masters programme focuses on Technical subjects in a framework of Design and Sustainability, and this approach is grounded in technical modules covering waste, water, structural design, utilities, road safety and highways, supported by project management and sustainable development; a large Dissertation brings research-led studies and unique knowledge with substantial industrial linkages. Sustainable Development is the key driver in the design, delivery and assessment of all curricula and material; also, all content is set in the context of scholarly activity in which academic research is blended with professional knowledge and experience to provide a rich learning environment. Input from leading professionals as guest lecturers, mentors and advisors enhances the delivery and educational experience. Therefore the course offers a linked postgraduate course which is intellectually coherent, academically challenging, progressive in nature (with appropriate exit points) and has vocational relevance to the disciplines of civil and infrastructure engineering, as well as being linked to transport, construction, waste management and water engineering. Attendance

Attendance is full-time for one year over 3 Semesters, commencing normally in September, but it is also possible to commence in January.

Attendance for the part-time Postgraduate Diploma is over 3 years, requiring attendance in 2 semesters of Years 1 and 2, and attendance in Year 3 as agreed with the Dissertation supervisor

Semester 1 - Compulsory: Project Management Practice; Integrated Design Studies; Optional – two from: Utilities and Water Engineering, Road Safety Engineering or Highway Asset Management; total of 4 x 15 credit modules.

Semester 2 - Compulsory: Sustainable Development; Infrastructure Design Studies; Optional – two from Structural Design for Infrastructure, Waste Systems or Road Safety Engineering; total of 4 x 15 credit modules.

Semester 3 – Compulsory: Dissertation - 1 x 60 credit module. Study will normally involve a weekly 12 hours of lectures, tutorials, site visits, design studio work, with independent study of 20+ hours.

This MSc degree is aimed at graduates with at least two years of practical experience in construction; however, more recent graduates with a good appreciation of construction processes will also benefit.

Having achieved a firm grounding in engineering you may be keen to develop your skills as a practical engineer working on site or enhance design skills if you are engaged in permanent works design.

Objectives

The course provides the following:

  • An introduction to statutory obligations, management methods and special design considerations for temporary works;
  • Design of structures used in and for temporary works, their construction and monitoring;
  • Design of geotechnical temporary works and processes, including groundwater control and ground investigation;
  • Design of temporary works for marine construction, in particular floating structures and the effect of waves and varying water levels;
  • The use of plant in temporary works and the provision of appropriate working platforms and access;
  • Demolition and alteration of structures, including the disposal/reuse of construction waste.

Accreditation

Accreditation by the Joint Board of Moderators (The Institution of Civil Engineers, the Institution of Structural Engineers, the Chartered Institution of Highways and Transportation and the Institute of Highways Engineers):

The accreditation report commended the MSc for addressing an area which is important in the construction industry but which does not often receive attention in existing degree programmes. It also identifies as examples of good practice the support from the Temporary Works Forum and the number of visiting lecturers who have committed to contribute to the programme.

Teaching and learning

The learning and teaching approach for the course encompasses a range of methods which support active learning including lectures, workshops, group work, case studies, problem-based learning, presentations and peer review.

Workshops, group work, case studies and problem-based learning will be used to build your ability to critically review and assess options for design and assessment of temporary works. Your learning will be supported by the online learning environment Moodle, which will provide resources for independent learning, such as further reading, links to wider sources of information and quizzes for self-assessment.

All modules involve undertaking a certain number of individual and/or group assignments (coursework) during the teaching terms, as well as comprehensive final examinations.

Part-time students are expected to complete all the modules within the two-year period. The teaching periods are structured to deliver core modules in a sequence, which permits engagement by part-time students alongside full-time students. The project is undertaken by part-time students in the second year.

Teaching normally takes place on two full days per week, although there may be some variations to accommodate practical exercises and site visits. In addition, there is an introduction week at the start of the programme each year which is attended by all full and part-time students.

This method of delivery is designed to accommodate students working full-time within reasonable commuting distance of City, University of London, as well as to full-time students, by concentrating tuition into two days per week on average, and encouraging flexibility for independent study.

Modules

Temporary works refers to works enabling the construction of, protection, support or provision of access to permanent works which might or might not remain in place at the completion of a construction project. Examples of temporary works include structures such as gantries for heavy plant, materials or accommodation as well as supports for partially-completed or partially-dismantled structures, excavations and accesses. The course delivery and content is actively supported by the Temporary Works Forum (TWf), which promotes best practice within the UK construction industry and sponsors the Centre of Excellence in Temporary Works and Construction Method Engineering at City, University of London. The course content has been developed in collaboration with the TWf membership and TWf members will contribute to lectures and design exercises.

The course addresses the regulatory background to temporary works for construction, the design of geotechnical, structural and marine temporary works, demolition, plant, safe working methods and access works. You will gain both the technical understanding to undertake safe but cost-effective designs for a full range of temporary works and a good understanding of the wide range of plant and techniques that can be employed.

The programme will be delivered by industry experts providing insights into current practice in temporary works and academic members of staff experienced in the theory underlying the design methods employed. There will be visits to operational sites and practical exercises to provide opportunities to experience decision-making in the field, combined with group sessions to develop your knowledge further through active engagement. This will also require you to present your work occasionally, participate in peer review sessions and work in teams.

The course consists of eight taught modules and a project. The project is a major individual research exercise on a topic relevant to temporary works and construction method engineering. The main outcome of the project is a written report (dissertation).

Career prospects

Temporary works are an important aspect of most construction projects. Consequently, a qualification in this field will have widespread application across all civil engineering disciplines, whether you are working as an on-site engineer or as a design office engineer. You could also go into the research arena conducting innovative research in the area of temporary works.

How you learn

You learn through lectures, tutorials and practical sessions. Lectures provide the theoretical underpinning while practical sessions give you the opportunity to put theory into practice, applying your knowledge to specific problems. 

Tutorials and seminars provide a context for interactive learning and allow you to explore relevant topics in depth. In addition to the taught sessions, you undertake a substantive MSc research project.

In addition to the taught sessions, you undertake a substantive MSc research project and the Advanced Practice module. This module enables you to experience and develop employability or research attributes and experiential learning opportunities in either an external workplace, internal research environment or by studying abroad. You also critically engage with either external stakeholders or internal academic staff, and reflect on your own personal development through your Advanced Practice experience.

How you are assessed

Assessment varies from module to module. It may include in-course assignments, design exercises, technical reports, presentations or formal examinations. For your MSc project you prepare a dissertation.

Your Advanced Practice module is assessed by an individual written reflective report (3,000 words) together with a study or workplace log, where appropriate, and through a poster presentation.

At the same time the concepts of wellness health, illness and disease have become issues of controversy.

This programme focuses on the happiness and its overlap with health and wellbeing asking questions such as: What is happiness and health? How does illness affect our understanding of what matters? Do our views about death and mortality affect how happy we are and how meaningful our lives are? You will explore these questions at the intersection of philosophy, ethics, psychology and medicine. Our answers to them have important implications for policy and health care. This programme is aimed at graduates with a background in philosophy, psychology, theology, health sciences, medicine or social sciences.

Do you want to explore deeper the key issues in the field of philosophy of religion and ethics? 

Are you looking to develop your professional or academic career path? 

On the MA Philosophy of Religion and Ethics programme you will explore a variety of questions - for example: Are there shared human values? How do we negotiate different belief systems in pluralistic societies? Is there a conflict between science and religion? Do people with different religious views have the same morals? Is life without God meaningless? You will be taught by a vibrant community of philosophers, pursuing original research on a wide range of topics on which expert supervision is available.

Course details

You will study six taught modules in total, two of which are core Philosophy modules:

  • God, Freedom and the Meaning of Life
  • Bioethics or Ethics and Global Ethics

You will also study a core module in theory and methods: Research Skills and Methods (for Philosophy) if you are writing a dissertation in Philosophy, or Research Methods in Theology and the Study of Religion if you are writing a dissertation in Theology and Religion.

Your remaining three modules are optional, and can be chosen from across the School of Philosophy, Theology and Religion, including at least one from each Department. Modules available typically include:

  • Classic Problems in the Philosophy of Religion: Evil, Miracles and Immortality 
  • Islamic Philosophy 
  • Philosophy of Health and Happiness
  • Philosophy of Mind
  • Problems of Religious Diversity
  • Religion in Contemporary Global Politics I and II
  • Religious Nationalism

Assessment

Modules are assessed by written assignment. MA students will also complete a 15,000-word dissertation, or a placement-based dissertation, with support from a supervisor.

Learning and teaching

As well as the taught modules you take on this programme, you are encouraged to participate in our weekly Postgraduate Seminar and in the regular meetings of PhilSoc, so you'll be able to gain insight from a range of academics and peers from across the department.

Support with academic writing

As a postgraduate student in the College of Arts and Law, you have access to the Academic Writing Advisory Service (AWAS) which aims to help your transition from undergraduate to taught Masters level, or back into academia after time away. The service offers guidance on writing assignments and dissertations for your MA/MSc programme with individual support from an academic writing advisor via tutorials, email and the provision of online materials.

International students can access support for English Language development and skills through the Birmingham International Academy (BIA).

This course will give you specialist knowledge on how bridges, highways and tunnels are designed, built, and maintained. You will develop a sophisticated understanding of techniques at the forefront of design, construction, and maintenance of infrastructure and acquire specialist knowledge on the latest technological developments such as accelerated bridge construction, advanced materials like ultra-high performance concrete, and the possibilities of cutting-edge sensing techniques and robotics for the monitoring and repair of infrastructure.

This technically focused Master's programme provides you with the in-depth knowledge you need to:

It is suitable for candidates with an undergraduate degree qualification looking to strengthen their technical knowledge and improve their career potential in the sector.

You will be taught by research active staff, ensuring you are taught the latest theory and practice. It also means you’ll have opportunities to work on ongoing research projects.

You will practice by developing designs for real projects. In the design project module you will be guided throughout by our Industrial Royal Academy of Engineering visiting professor from Arup.

The programme is supported by our strong industry links. We have a very active student-led Civil Engineering Society (CivSoc) which provides a non-academic platform for interaction between students and academics, industrialists and professional institutions. CivSoc organises a range of talks, site visits and tournaments every year.

We have a commitment to strong pastoral care for all of our students, which includes a Personal Tutor for all students, regular contact hours for tutor groups and our supportive student service teams who are always ready to help with any questions and provide the advice that you need.
