This module will enable you to demonstrate a deep understanding of some of the current issues and themes relating to children’s high dependency care practice.

P44018 Assessment and Management of the Child requiring High Dependency Care (40 credits)
This double level 7 practice module will provide you with the opportunity to examine knowledge and skills in caring for children who require high dependency care, building on your knowledge gained in pre-registration and post–qualifying experience.

Teaching and learning

The teaching, learning and assessment strategy of the programme reflects its student centred, patient-centred and practice-focused approach. Each module has an appropriate division between structured learning activities and private study. You will have opportunities to share your existing and developing skills, knowledge and experience. A variety of teaching and learning strategies will be employed to make the most of the range of experience, skills and knowledge within the group.

This programme is designed to develop and enhance your skills and knowledge as a midwife to an advanced level. Core modules are shared and are multi-professional across the contemporary healthcare programmes.

Postgraduate certificate - to achieve a postgraduate certificate, you will need to earn 60 credits. You will study two core modules worth 20 credits each: high dependency care in midwifery and pathophysiology and its impact on childbirth, with one optional 20 credit module.

Postgraduate diploma - to gain a postgraduate diploma, you will need to earn 120 credits. 100 of these will be made up from five core modules, each worth 20 credits (two from Year 1 and three from Year 2): advancing research knowledge in practice 1, advancing research knowledge in practice 2, and advancing care: vulnerable women in childbirth.

Master of Science - for a full masters degree, you will need to earn a total of 180 credits. You will study the same core modules as the postgraduate diploma, with the extra 60 credits coming from a research project in an area of study related to midwifery.

Modules are taught sequentially within this part-time programme, starting with pathophysiology and its impact on childbirth and high dependency care in midwifery. About the programme

This programme is designed for practitioners registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and who are currently employed within the field of neonatal nursing.

It has been developed to provide a standardised level of professional competence and academic accreditation for neonatal nurses.
It incorporates the competencies of Matching Knowledge and Skills for Qualified in Speciality (QIS) Neonatal Nurses (April 2012).

Your learning

The programme consists of three SCQF Level 10 modules, normally undertaken over six months – one year:

Special Care Neonatal Nursing – you will critically explore the specific needs of a baby requiring special care nursing. You will undertake the practice element of the programme within your own area of practice and will be supported by clinical mentors.

Neonatal Intensive Care/High Dependency – you will critically explore the specific needs of a baby requiring intensive care nursing. You will undertake the practice element of the programme within your own area of practice and will be supported by clinical mentors.

Neonatal Work-based Learning – this module will enable you to work towards the achievement of clinical competencies as detailed within the clinical log book; you will be supported by clinical mentors throughout. Students should log a total of 750 hours of learning experiences, with 250 of these hours dedicated to specific experiences achieved within the intensive care setting.

Students will primarily be based in their own units, in both special and intensive care environments.

Following at least a two year period of being qualified in specialty, staff may undertake an MSc in Advanced Neonatal Practice.

The unpredictability of patient symptoms are mimicked using sophisticated software in a clinical ward setting, ranging from low to high dependency beds.

Investment in the Domus Initiative – an older adult artificial home environment – provides you with experience in caring for older people and dementia care. In a first for the Scottish university sector, we have established A Community Orientated Resource for Nursing (ACORN) where students can practice within a simulated primary care environment.

Overview

Our course aims to explore the health of women and children from a global public health perspective. Students will explore individual health issues, both physical, psychological and social that commonly affect women and children, and also explore the wider political and societal issues that impact these.

Women and children, both in the UK and around the world, face inequality on a daily basis. These inequalities come from lack of access to healthcare, education, employment opportunities, technological advances, legal support, and social, cultural and political opposition (Marmot, 2010). The World Health Organisation has recognised this and explicitly targeted women and children in three of its Millennium Development Goals; to promote gender equality and empower women; to reduce child mortality; to improve maternal health, alongside wider goals to improve universal access to education and to eradicate poverty that also disproportionately affect women (WHO, 2015).

This course focuses on the health of women and children. During their ‘core’ modules, students will be encourage to explore individual health issues, as well as exploring the global legislation that impacts on women’s and children’s health, and understanding how they can implement and influence policy change. The option modules will allow the student to tailor their learning to their individual practice; whether caring for the critically unwell women, doing a physical assessment of a new-born infant (NIPE), understanding the global impact of responsive parenting or as an effective leader or manager of a service.

This course will utilise a global public health perspective and is aimed at all practitioners who work with women and children, so will appeal to students both in the UK and internationally. It will offer an inter-professional learning opportunity to a range of professionals including Midwives, Children’s Nurses, Health Visitors, Hospital and Community nurses, Family Support Workers, but is also suitable for those who work with women and children in the voluntary sector or education. The course will be taught by a range of experienced lecturers from a variety of clinical backgrounds. Please be aware that this course is aimed at practitioners working in some capacity with women’s and children’s health and does not lead to a registerable qualification with the Nursing and Midwifery Council in the UK.

- Global Challenges to Women and Children's Health:
This module is designed for an inter-professional audience, and has a global public health focus, considering issues affecting women and children around the world. It is designed to provide insight and exploration of the major public health issues affecting the health of women and children. Each of the main areas explored will include an overview of the illness/problem as well as consideration of the social, cultural and political context and influence upon it and evaluation of how this leads to inequality and may reduce life chances.

- Research Proposal - Women's and Children's Health:
This module provides a critical overview of research philosophy and the major methodological and design approaches to research in order to equip you to appreciate the strengths and weaknesses of published research, whether in your specialist area or in the health, welfare and social care field.

- Political Power and Policy Drivers affecting Women and Children's Health:
As part of everyday inter-professional practice, practitioners working with women and children are affected by policy drivers in a number of ways, however, differences may be apparent in how these are translated to healthcare and how they are embedded into practice. Implementing new policy requires practitioners to use their, power, influence and interpersonal skills. The module will enable the student to critically evaluate their own knowledge and skills which underpin their current practice.

- Postgraduate Major Project:
The Major Project, which is central to the Masters award, enables students to demonstrate their ability to synthesise learning from previous modules and use this learning as the basis for planning, conducting and writing up a research or work-based project. This project provides the opportunity for students to demonstrate: the ability to raise significant and meaningful questions in relation to their specialism; depth of knowledge which may involve working at current limits of theoretical and/or research understanding; critical understanding of research methods and its relationship to knowledge; awareness of and ability to develop solutions to ethical dilemmas likely to arise in their research or professional practice; the ability to draw meaningful and justifiable conclusions from information which may be complex or contradictory; the capability to expand or redefine existing knowledge to develop new approaches to changing situations and contribute to the development to best practice; the ability to communicate these processes in a clear and sophisticated fashion; the capability to evaluate their work from the perspective of an autonomous reflective learner. - Applied Leadership & Management:
This module provides an innovative exploration of leadership and management in healthcare, and examines their impact on organisations including wider considerations in the external environment. This module will enable students to assess and analyse the roles that leaders and managers play in a range of organizational contexts; and to apply the principles and techniques of leadership and management in a range of contexts.

- Care of the Critically Unwell Woman:
This module will enable you to develop in-depth knowledge and skills when caring for the critically unwell woman, during the child bearing continuum. Work-based learning is incorporated into the module in order to recognise and value your professional expertise. While practicing midwifery in an area where women with high dependency needs will be cared for, you will also spend clinical time developing your skills in the high dependency or intensive care unit.

- Newborn Infant Physical Examination (NIPE):
This module will focus on the specialist knowledge and the clinical skills that are required to enable you to competently undertake a thorough Newborn and Infant Physical Examination (NIPE) in clinical practice. You will utilise in-depth knowledge and understanding that you have gained to enable you to recognise the deviations from the normal to initiate appropriate care and referral. Critical reflection and completion of the practice documents will allow you to further identify your learning needs and develop your scope of professional practice.

- Global Impact of Responsive Parenting:
This module is designed to examine the positive health impact responsive parenting has on the mother and infant dyad, the wider family, society and the Globe. Historical child rearing styles will be reviewed and debated to highlight their negative effects on child development and on society. The module will explore the current understanding of neurophysiology of infant brain development and how parenting interactions can affect this process. The module will conclude with positive practical steps for health professionals to encourage responsive parenting with the parents they work with every day.

Assessment -

You will have the opportunity to demonstrate your learning in a variety of ways during this course. Assessment will vary between modules, but includes patchwork text, reflective essays, action plans, reports, objective structured clinical examinations (OSCEs), essays, ‘journal style’ articles (to prepare you to publish your work) and a major project on a subject of your choice.

This 30 credit, Level 7 blended learning module from the School of Midwifery and Reproductive Health enables students to gain bespoke skills and competencies associated with their area of practice.

Students develop an understanding of advanced practice, subject specific principles and underpinning theory for examining their client group. Clinical skills in assessment will be developed in order to undertake safe examinations amongst specified client groups, with the ability to demonstrate higher level clinical reasoning and problem solving.

As minimal university attendance is required, some areas can be studied by distance learning. The module runs over the academic year with flexible finishing dates depending on the achievement of clinical competencies.

-Advanced Perineal Assessment and Repair: An opportunity for experienced midwives working in intrapartum care to develop their skills, including training other staff in perineal assessment and repair
-Assisted Birth: An opportunity for experienced midwives working in intrapartum care, focusing on preparing midwives to undertake ventouse delivery

Our Child Nursing course provides students with an opportunity to gain an Integrated MNurs/Registered Nurse qualification and acts as preparation both for registration as a nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and for taking on the responsibilities and accountability involved. It aims to provide graduates holding a health-related degree the opportunity to study at Level 7 – the theory that underpins nursing practice and develops knowledge and skills through evidence-based learning. Practice experience is gained in both hospital and community settings. On successful completion of this course students will be able to enter Part one (Child) of the Register held by the NMC.

The Child Nursing course will prepare students to be safe, effective and caring practitioners who are ready to work with children, young people and their families with a variety of care needs in a range of settings from home to hospital. In addition, the development of the children’s nursing modules has been informed by key guidance and the contemporary issues challenging the profession and service, such as the recognition of the sick child, safeguarding of children, transition into adult care, involvement of children, young people and their parents in service development (RCPCH 2010), promotion of mental health and psychological wellbeing (DOH 2006), withholding and withdrawal of life sustaining treatment (RCPCH 2004) and standards for the development of “young people friendly” services (DOH 2011).

Continuing changes to children and young people’s health services require nurses who can adapt to new ways of working whilst being able to uphold and assure high quality nursing care for the children, young people and families in their care. A key aim, therefore, is to equip children’s nursing students to thrive in such changing environments and to understand the many factors that influence service provision.

Children’s nursing students are encouraged to be passionate, assertive and creative in working collaboratively with other professionals and families in the pursuit of excellent and innovative care for all children, young people and their families.

Course structure

The framework for the MNurs Award has been specifically designed to permit Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) and Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL) as described by the NMC with a view to preparing students who are already graduates and/or who have relevant clinical experience for registration. APL / APEL will involve students making a written submission to detail how the requirements of the course have been met through prior study as well as providing evidence of relevant practice experience in a health care support worker role.

The course involves continuous assessment of both theory and practice. A variety of assessment methods are used including practical examinations, case studies, essays, written examinations and presentations. Students are also assessed against the NMC’s competencies for registration during a series of practice placements in hospital and the community.

The MNurs course prepares successful students for a career as a registered nurse in the relevant field of practice. Newly qualified nurses can apply for posts within a hospital or community setting. The MNurs course may also enable individuals to develop a clinical research career within the NHS.

In line with the principles and values which underpin the NHS constitution, the University expects all students undertaking programmes which lead to registration as a health professional to demonstrate the NHS values.

98% of students go on to work or further study within six months of graduation (Unistats, 2014).

We have a range of specialist equipment that is used to simulate birthing situations from normal to emergency, to enable you to develop the skills you need no-matter the birthing situation you are supporting.

You will have access to a simulated six-bedded high dependency unit (HDU) with realistic equipment including piped oxygen, call bells, medicines and emergency equipment; laboratories, including a biology laboratory, allow students to rehearse their skills in preparation for practice in a range of placements, including clinics and women’s homes.

Teaching and learning

A blended approach to learning and teaching is adopted including institution-based taught modules, e-learning and work-based learning. Modules are run by experienced practitioners and leading researchers, using a variety of direct and interactive teaching methods. Students will learn in large and small multidisciplinary groups and will be supported and encouraged to participate in independent learning.

A variety of assessment methods are used to assess the course learning outcomes. The choice of assessment method will be influenced by the focus and learning outcomes of the modules. Assessment strategies include coursework, examinations, reports, seminar presentations, skills schedules and objective structured clinical examinations (OSCEs).

Modules

The normal period of registration for a Masters degree is one year's taught programme for full-time students (plus up to one year for dissertation) or two years' taught programme for part-time students (plus up to one year for dissertation).

Students undertake 6 core, compulsory modules (including a dissertation module where you focus upon a topic area of your own choosing) and choose a further two elective taught modules. Our campuses are equipped with artificial simulated environments with contemporary healthcare technology, where you’ll learn in a realistic context, to put your knowledge into practice. The unpredictability of patient symptoms are mimicked using sophisticated software in a clinical ward setting, ranging from low to high dependency beds.

Investment in the Domus Initiative – an older adult artificial home environment – provides you with experience in caring for older people and dementia care. In a first for the Scottish university sector, we have established A Community Orientated Resource for Nursing (ACORN) where students can practice within a simulated primary care environment.

Lanarkshire and Paisley campuses also provide midwifery students with excellent learning and teaching environments with facilities and equipment that includes a birthing room with maternal simulator and a birthing pool for simulated water births.

We work jointly with a range of partners, both nationally and internationally, on our research interests, and this directly informs teaching at UWS – which means that you’ll learn from the experts.

Our programmes are informed by practice and all of our academic staff are members of the School’s Institute of Healthcare Policy and

• the launch of a new resource, ‘Jenny’s Diary’, which will provide an invaluable tool for families and practitioners to help people with a learning disability understand their diagnosis of dementia

• the development of a new ‘Philosophy of Care’ in partnership with Broomfield Court Care Home in Glasgow, which will look at ways of enhancing the culture and care within a care setting

• we have collaborated with Ayrshire Hospice to launch the first University Hospice in Scotland to help improve the lives of people with life-limiting illness, their families, partners and carers across Ayrshire & Arran; and Ardgowan Hospice in Greenock, with it becoming a University Teaching Hospice and launching a two-year research project with the University aimed at revolutionising the way palliative
care is delivered to improve the patient journey

• the launch of Dumfries & Galloway Recovery College – the first of its kind in Scotland – which offers short courses designed to enhance self-belief, identify ambitions and encourage learning

• in partnership with Edinburgh Napier University and the University of Edinburgh, the mental health team lead research into the relationship between emotional intelligence and clinical and academic performance in student nurses

• we are working with the Glasgow Improving Cancer Journey Programme to evaluate this groundbreaking intervention in cancer care in Scotland

• we have launched a new state-of-the-art microbiology lab which will form a research base in the fight against Healthcare Associated Infection

• a collaboration with a number of European partners to develop shared academic and practicebased programmes to prepare family health nurses in Europe

About the programme

Protecting our children is at the very heart of society and the individuals and teams who carry out these rewarding and challenging roles make a vital contribution to the safety and well-being of present and future generations. This programme will enhance your existing skills in this sector and prepare you for a more senior specialist career.

This programme has been developed in the context of contemporary policy and practice developments relating to children’s protection and well-being in Scotland. You will have the opportunity to critically explore theoretical frameworks, research, and practice
issues across professional and disciplinary boundaries in a multiagency practice environment. You will also develop a child-centred perspective in addressing the protection of children and young people. The programme is delivered on a part-time basis over one year, and adopts a blended learning approach, utilising online learning supported by twelve study days at the University’s Paisley or Lanarkshire campuses.

The course consists of three modules:
• Child Protection in Context
• Protecting Children
• Child Protection Practice

Graduates will be equipped to take on specialist child protection roles or be promoted to senior child protection roles within their agencies such as nurse consultant, social work team manager, child protection lead officer or child protection advisor. Graduates could continue their studies towards obtaining the MSc Vulnerability or MSc Health Studies.

About the programme

Healthcare is evolving, placing an emphasis on the integration of health and social services to become more client-focused. You will enhance your existing skills base to develop academically and professionally and become an effective strategic leader.

NB: Applicants must have the English language and literary skills as per university guidelines or Nursing and Midwifery guidelines (IELTS score of 7 or above) for work-based modules.

Your learning

The programme consists of core and option study modules set within a framework of inter-related themes including: contemporary issues; role enhancement; and evidence-based practice. Modules reflect relevant contemporary issues for healthcare professionals and are mapped against the core and specific dimensions of the NHS Knowledge and Skills Framework. These are equally applicable to many professional and organisational groups. You will also have the opportunity to study areas of particular interest.

The Postgraduate Certificate requires students to complete 60 credits i.e. one core and two option modules. Postgraduate Diploma students must complete a further 60 credits – two core and one option module. MSc students must also complete a Research and Enquiry Dissertation module – 60 credits.

To gain the award of MSc Health Studies, students must complete 180 credits. Core modules include:
