ALARP (As Low As Reasonably Practicable) is a commonly used but often misunderstood concept. The purpose of this module is to enable students to understand the hierarchy of risk reduction measures and the options for risk reduction in the project lifecycle. Students will be introduced to the concept of ALARP and how to demonstrate that risk has been reduced to ALARP levels.

Assessment is in the form of an essay combined with activities (e.g. exercises, discussions, etc.).

After completing the course you will be able to:

1. Identify different options available for risk reduction
2. Decide when risk reduction measures can best be used

Programme modules

- Manufacturing System and Process Modelling
The objective of this module is to provide an understanding of manufacturing and its management that recognises breadth and depth of required resources and information. This is done through developing an understanding of the hierarchy of computer based modelling relevant to manufacturing, ranging from the detail of material behaviour in processed parts, through macroscopic process models to the integration of processes within manufacturing systems and higher level business processes.

- Lean and Agile Manufacture
This module allows students to gain an understanding of lean and agile concepts in the manufacturing business, including its distribution chains. Students will learn to specify, design and evaluate an appropriate lean or agile business system.

- Engineering Management and Business Studies
The aim of the module is to introduce the concepts of management techniques that are applicable to running an engineering company. Students will learn to evaluate commercial risk, plan and organise engineering activities for improved company effectiveness and communicate technical and business information to ensure maximum impact.

- Product Information Systems – Product Lifecycle Management
The objectives of this module are for students to understand and critically evaluate the emerging product information systems for designers in the form of Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems. Students will learn to use modern information and process modelling techniques to define the information integration and workflow requirements of a PLM configuration.

- The Innovation Process and Project Management
Students will establish a clear overview of the innovation process and an understanding of the essential elements within it. They will learn strategies for planning and carrying out innovative projects in any field.

- Sustainable Development: The Engineering Context
This module provides students with an understanding of the principles and practices of sustainable development and to provide them with an understanding of how engineers can help manufacturing businesses develop into more sustainable enterprises.

- Advanced Manufacturing Processes and Automation
Students will gain an in-depth knowledge of state-of-the-art manufacturing techniques, processes and technologies. They will learn to understand and critically evaluate advanced manufacturing processes and technologies, assessing their advantages and disadvantages.

- Additive Manufacturing
The module will introduce and develop the concepts of Additive Manufacturing (AM) and demonstrate the different AM techniques available at Loughborough University. The module will emphasise the strengths and weaknesses of the various technologies and highlight applications and case studies from the AM industry.

- Projects
In addition to the taught modules, all students undertake an individual major project. Part-time students normally undertake a major project that is based on the needs of their employing company.

How you will learn

You will learn through a carefully balanced combination of lectures, in-class guided workshops, hands-on computer modelling and independent research. Following eight taught modules, students pursue an individual project typically based on the diverse range of industrially focused manufacturing research strengths within the School. Part time students may base their projects on particular needs of their current employer.

Examinations are in January and May / June with coursework throughout the programme. The project is assessed by written report, presentation and exhibition.

Careers and further study

Within national or multinational manufacturing industry companies working as a Manufacturing Engineer, Project Engineer, Systems Analyst or Software Development Specialist. Graduates may also study for an MPhil or PhD with the School’s research groups.


The University offers over 100 scholarships each year to new self-financing full-time international students who are permanently resident in a country outside the European Union. These scholarships are to the value of 25% of the programme tuition fee and that value will be credited to the student’s tuition fee account.

Learning and teaching methods

Full-time students spend about 12 hours in lectures, seminars, tutorials, and computing and laboratory-based practical sessions each week, plus research and background reading. We have an exciting programme of site visits and fieldwork trips.

This MSc is designed to develop cutting-edge knowledge and high-level practical skills relevant to many areas of postgraduate employment, particularly managerial, regulatory, scientific and technological roles related to energy and the environment. The Master in Data Science for Complex Economic Systems is a one year full-time postgraduate program (II level Master Degree) taught in English and welcomes students from different disciplines (e.g. economics, physics, computer science and political science).
The Master provides theoretical and methodological tools to understand and analyse complex systems which typically exhibit nonlinear behaviour resulting from the interaction of heterogeneous agents, hierarchy and continuous innovation. These properties require exploring new visions and expanding education beyond the frontier of traditional economic studies. In addition to the standard toolkit of economics and econometrics, the program takes a path-breaking perspective on advanced analytics, including big data, machine-learning network analysis, and agent-based simulation. The Master applies this pioneering approach to modelling, management, forecasting and policymaking in innovation, urban and consumption systems.
The teaching method combines a thorough theoretical training with hands-on laboratories also in collaboration with top research centres and corporations. The course provides a management-focused golf programme which develops awareness and ability in corporate management, equipping students with the skills and confidence necessary to manage others in the golf industry. More specifically, the course will develop students’ knowledge of international golf business through modules including: The Global Golf Industry, Strategic Management in Golf, Golf Consultancy Project, Golf Business and Innovation, and Contemporary Developments in Golf. The Global Golf Industry

This module aims to critically analyse the global context of golf by examining a number of issues, including: the spread of golf in the Middle and Far East; the globalisation of the world golf tours; and the lives of professional golfers. In doing so, this module will enable students to critically examine the social, economic and environmental consequences of golf’s global rise and also includes a specific focus on the growing internationalisation of golf business practices.

Golf Consultancy Project

This module aims to provide students with the skills to undertake a process of environmental scanning and consultancy in a golf industry workplace. In doing so, students will carefully monitor an organisation’s internal and external environments, detect early signs of opportunities and threats, and build a plan to influence current and future developments. This module will give students a critical awareness of the wider issues affecting golf business in relation to a specific industry sector. Students will be encouraged to record and reflect on their own personal development during the module and thus promote the transferable skills required to succeed in the ever changing golf industry.

Year 2

Contemporary Developments in Golf

This module will provide students with the analytical skills to enable them to explore a number of contemporary issues that are relevant in the modern golf industry. Analysis will focus on issues such as: participation in golf in regards to race, gender, class and disability; drugs in golf; golf and the Olympics; golf and the mass media; the relationship between golf and health; the relationship between golf and social inclusion; and player management in golf.

Research Methodology and Design

This module provides students with the essential personal, organisational, management, theoretical and statistical skills needed to work at Postgraduate Level. It will explore research philosophies, research process and design and the process of questionnaire development and design. The module will develop skills in advanced data organisation, presentation, dissemination and problem solving.

Brand Awareness and Marketing Strategies

This module will develop contemporary marketing knowledge, skills and experiences in a range of golfing contexts and environments. This module will develop the students’ ability to identify, problem solve and deploy a range of golf marketing theories and practices in this rapidly developing area. Students will engage with a diverse range of marketing theory as related to the contemporary golf context. This will be complemented by developing a pragmatic understanding of the practical application of golf marketing strategies and tactics in the 21st century.

Year 3

Masters Dissertation

The dissertation is a triple module and allows students to design and conduct a substantial piece of independent, supervised research related to the field of study.
