The Oil and Gas Innovation MSc is a project-led masters programme which will equip students with the skills and competencies to generate and commercialise innovations for the oil and gas industry.

The programme is a collaboration between the Oil & Gas Innovation Centre (OGIC) and a range of Scottish Universities, including the University of Aberdeen (lead), Heriot-Watt, Strathclyde University, University of St Andrews, Glasgow Caledonian University, University of the Highlands and Islands and Robert Gordon University to develop new technologies in exploration, production and decommissioning.

The collaborative nature of this programme means that in addition to courses at Heriot-Watt's Institute of Petroleum Engineering, students will also take modules at the University of Aberdeen and the University of Strathclyde giving them the unique opportunity to benefit from the oil and gas expertise available at each of these three institutions.

The programme is open to graduates from any discipline, and is aimed at people aspiring towards, or already pursuing a career in business. It equips graduates with theoretical knowledge of psychology and related practical skills to enhance effectiveness at individual, team and organisational levels within any business setting. You will study courses covering different aspects of management (leadership, diversity, organisational culture and organisational change) with the remaining courses covering human factors, marketing, coaching and research methods. You can choose to conduct your research project in any area relevant to Business Psychology giving you the opportunity to tailor your studies to fit your interests and professional needs. The programme has an international focus, and graduates are therefore well prepared to work anywhere within the global market.

The programme can be studied on-campus, either full-time, or part-time. Alternatively, the distance learning format allows you to (continue to) work full-time anywhere in the world. The MSc in Oil and Gas Innovation is a collaborative programme coordinated by the University of Aberdeen and involving Heriot Watt, Robert Gordon University, Strathclyde, and St Andrews. The degree is hosted by the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at St Andrews. Students who apply for the course at St Andrews will take three of their modules at partner institutions.

The course is aimed at technical innovators, business developers, managers or technical staff, and engineering or science graduates interested in learning how to identify and commercialise innovation opportunities for the oil and gas industry.

Highlights

The course is run as a collaboration between five Scottish universities, providing an opportunity for you to gain from the breadth of expertise and experience across these institutions.
Students learn how to analyse problems related to the oil and gas sector and apply tools and techniques to identify opportunities for innovation.
Project work involves progressing an innovation from one technology readiness level further towards commercialisation.

Teaching format

The MSc degree requires one semester of full-time (or two semesters part-time) coursework equivalent to five compulsory modules and one optional module. The final component for the MSc is the completion of a project in oil and gas innovation.

The taught portion of the programme focuses on the innovation and commercialisation processes in the oil and gas sector and provides knowledge and understanding of a specific technical area of your choice.

Some taught modules are delivered at other university campuses or at independent work sites. Modules which are taught by partner institutions (i.e. Commercialising Innovation, Business Essentials for Innovators and Product Development) will be delivered partially via Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) and partially via face-to-face teaching. Students will need to arrange their own travel and accommodation for attending modules at partner universities.

The compulsory Oil and Gas project can be carried out at the employer’s site.

Teaching methods include lectures, seminars, small group tutorials, one-to-one discussion and independent learning. Assessment for the taught portion is based on reports, project proposals, oral presentations and written examinations.

Overview

Entry to the actuarial profession is by a demanding series of examinations, but the rewards after qualifying are great. The Institute and Faculty of Actuaries in the UK has four levels of examinations to qualify. The first level, the Core Technical (CT) subjects, are taught in our BSc or MSc in Actuarial Science and lead to exemptions from CT1 to CT8.

Leading on from this, our established and successful MSc in Actuarial Management (See http://www.postgraduate.hw.ac.uk/prog/msc-actuarial-management/ ) covers the more advanced actuarial subjects and offers exemptions from the syllabuses of the Core Application subjects CA1 and CA3 and Specialist Technical subjects ST2, ST4, ST5, ST6 and ST9.

Students will typically study CA1, CA3 and up to three ST subjects (two ST subjects are needed to satisfy the profession's requirements).

Taking our MSc in Actuarial Management is a great way to speed your progress to this most prestigious of careers - it's designed to take you almost all of the way to qualification. A student who graduates with a full set of exemptions from Heriot-Watt (CT, CA and ST subjects) will only have three more examinations to pass, as well as gaining the necessary work experience, to qualify as a Fellow of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries.

Programme duration

The PG Diploma comprises the taught coursework component leading to exemptions from CA1 and the ST professional subjects and takes 9 months to complete. Successful students can then progress to the project work in the summer. This takes the form of industry-relevant case studies, assessed by written reports, which leads to the award of an MSc and exemption from the Subject CA3. In exceptional cases a student may be allowed to write a research dissertation.

The programme is also available to be studied on a part-time basis, over a maximum of 4 years.

30% of our teaching staff are qualified actuaries, the others are leading Mathematicians, Financial Mathematicians and Statisticians, who are nationally and internationally recognised for their research. This expertise ensures that what we teach you is current, applicable to the real workplace and current economy. Our National Student Survey results are consistently high for overall student satisfaction.

Results from the National Student Survey for 2011 reveal that 88% of our Mathematics and Statistics (including Actuarial Science) graduates are employed with a graduate position and/or undertaking further study. Our graduates go on to work for companies such as Swiss Re, Standard Life, Towers Watson, Lloyds Banking Group, Barclays Capital, Scottish Widows, Ernst & Young and many more. Graduates are employed locally in Edinburgh, London and throughout the world.

Student Actuarial Society

Heriot-Watt has a very active Students' Actuarial Society (See http://hwsas.com/ ) which won several awards at a recent Heriot-Watt 'Oscars' ceremony. This body is completely managed, enthusiastically and professionally, by our students.

Programme content

In the taught element of the programme each student takes eight semester-long courses. These are linked in pairs, one per semester. One pair of courses – covering Actuarial Risk Management – is compulsory and corresponds to subject CA1. It applies the principles of actuarial mathematics to a wide range of financial and insurance settings. Students choose a minimum of two pairs of courses from a list including Life Office Management (subject ST2), Pensions (subject ST4), Investment and Finance (subject ST5), Derivatives (subject ST6) and Enterprise Risk Management (subject ST9).

The choice of courses may depend on the coverage of actuarial subjects in the student’s first degree. Depending on individual circumstances, other optional courses may be made available, for example courses from the MSc in Actuarial Science or in other disciplines. However, students choosing to take three pairs of courses, potentially leading to exemptions from three ST subjects, will have an exceptionally broad range of employment opportunities.

Students may graduate with the Postgraduate Diploma at the end of the 2nd semester, after completing the taught coursework component leading to exemptions form CA1 and the ST professional subjects. Successful students can then progress to the project work in the summer. This takes the form of industry-relevant case studies, assessed by written reports, which leads to the award of an MSc and exemption from the Subject CA3. In exceptional cases a student may be allowed to write a research dissertation.The dissertation is an extended research project, with regular supervision, undertaken in the summer. The diploma takes 9 months and the MSc takes 1 year full time and part time options are available.

The Applied Petroleum Geoscience programme is a unique programme in subsurface geoscience and exploration at Heriot-Watt University.

This year-long MSc mainly focuses on petroleum geoscience, but it is closely linked with other MSc programmes and research groups in petroleum engineering and reservoir geology at Heriot-Watt's Institute of Petroleum Engineering. The programme is also applicable to non-petroleum subsurface geoscience subjects, such as CO2 storage and groundwater flow.

About the programme

The MSc in Applied Petroleum Geoscience provides students with a thorough training in aspects of subsurface geology, geophysics and geo-engineering, relating to the exploration, appraisal and development of subsurface resources.

Although the programme mainly focuses on exploration for hydrocarbon resources, and delineation of hydrocarbon reservoirs in the subsurface, the skills and knowledge learned in this subject are applicable to all subsurface geoscience areas, including groundwater exploration, waste disposal or CO2 sequestration.

Project work, both as groups and individually is part of the programme. Two fieldtrips are also a permanent part of the course.

The real estate market encompasses a diverse range of residential, commercial and industrial land and property. Real estate professionals advise on a broad range of areas needed by occupiers, developers and investors. This programme provides the foundation knowledge and skills needed by future property professionals.

The programme is designed to provide students with the essential learning components of economics, valuation, construction, investment, law, planning, management and development. It will build understanding of the complex interactions and dynamics of the property market, including a sound knowledge of valuation and appraisal techniques.

Professional Recognition

The MSc programme has professional accreditation from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and Heriot-Watt University is a leading centre for the education of commercial and residential property professionals in the UK.

Programme Structure

For the MSc, students undertake eight taught courses plus the research dissertation. Students on the Diploma programme take eight taught courses. Arrangements can be made for distance learning student to sit exams at a number of centres throughout the world. Students receive comprehensive course study packs by post. • The programme is tailored to balance fundamental understanding with industrial relevance.

• You gain an understanding of the fundamental properties of optoelectronic materials and devices with vocational training in modern optics, laser physics and semiconductor physics. You also gain practical experience in the operation of a wide range of laser devices and optoelectronic technologies.

• You develop an appreciation of the widespread practical applications of coherent light sources in communications, material processing and testing, optical processing, medical treatments and diagnostics, and environmental monitoring.

• The industrial project placement occupies 12-14 weeks from late May to August and is assessed in September after the submission of a dissertation.

• The admissions process will be run by the University of St Andrews in 2016 and by Heriot-Watt University in 2017.

Postgraduate community

The postgraduate community in the School of Physics & Astronomy includes typically ten students in our MSc class, two to ten engineering doctorate students taking taught modules, plus around 80 PhD research students. Students on the MSc course come from all over the world, with a mix of students from the UK, EU and overseas.

You are taught by internationally-leading research experts, and the relatively small size of the School means that there can be real interaction between students and staff. Lecture classes are relatively small, ranging from about 30 students down to groups of just a few. The teaching staff are proud to have the reputation of being accessible to students, and enjoy explaining the excitement of physics and its applications to their students. Well-equipped teaching laboratories allow you to explore the science of photonics in “research mode”, and interact directly with academic staff and the School’s early-career researchers.

Teaching methods

• Teaching comprises lectures, tutorials, and laboratory work.
• The teaching laboratory offers the photonics students a wide choice of experiments.
• Work for lecture modules is assessed largely through examinations whereas the laboratory work is assessed in a continuous manner. Lecture courses are examined at the end of each semester.
• MSc students select their project topic part way through the course. This is assessed by the submission of a dissertation and an oral exam.
• You are also invited to attend relevant research seminars and departmental colloquia given by departmental research staff, specialists from other universities and specialists from industry.

Careers

The MSc programme aims to produce graduates with appropriate knowledge, skills and attitudes to go on to be successful in the photonics area, be it in industrial/commercial positions, or undertaking PhD study in universities.

Typically half the class will start PhD or EngD programmes after graduation, while the other half will take up industrial and commercial positions. Commercial destinations of graduates from a recent year-group include laser development, sales and marketing with consumer/office optoelectronics, product support of optical metrology equipment, theoretical modelling of photonic structures, university teaching, internship with a national laser lab, and semiconductor optoelectronics research.

Sustainability Engineering concerns the responsible use of natural resources in a manner which does not compromise the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. This course addresses the engineering technologies and practices needed to efficiently exploit energy and materials, to mitigate the environmental impact, and to apply concepts such as life-cycle analysis, disassembly and recycling within the design process.

The course provides the necessary skills to analyse and assess sustainability issues, and to formulate strategies to implement practical sustainable development solutions in business.

In the MSc dissertation, students either conduct “in house” laboratory based projects or are placed in an industrial or commercial setting where they undertake environmental management system assessments or technical design analyses. Previous MSc student dissertations involved collaboration or placements with Alchema Ltd., Frames Separation Technologies, Caledonian Alloys, Senertec GmbH, United Wire Ltd., Scottish Whisky Research Institute, Nextek Ltd., Forestry Commission and the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency.
