Our course enables you to meet the growing need for increased knowledge in cross-cultural communication. You will receive communication-focused training and develop expertise in cross-cultural communication. The course covers understanding how cultures and human behaviour reflexively interconnect.

Changing social conditions and circumstances require new ways of dealing with people, and fresh ways of interacting and communicating with people of other cultures.

There is an urgent need to improve our knowledge and understanding of the processes and issues involved in cross-cultural communication, and to discover how such knowledge can be effectively applied in everyday experiences.

What this means in practice is that we need to develop our knowledge of why and how communication 'works' and how and why it sometimes does not 'work'.

The course answers questions including how cultural background impacts upon successful communication and how language, thought, and behaviour are interrelated.

The Cross-Cultural Communication (CCC) MA is relevant if you wish to study communication, language and culture. It will also suit anyone intending to work, or are already working, in international and cross-cultural environments where communication is an essential aspect of that work, as for example:

The course is theoretically, practically and research oriented, and allows selection of one of six specialist pathways.

About

The course has been designed to meet the needs of students wishing to understand the application of communication principles to healthcare contexts. This new course has specifically been designed to meet the needs of students who wish to gain a formal qualification in Communication Management in Healthcare. The target market for students is identified to include those working in communication positions or have communication related roles and responsibilities within a range of healthcare settings, including public, private and voluntary sectors. As increasingly more postgraduate students are working either full-time or part-time, the delivery of the modules needs to be more flexible (i.e. block teaching/short courses/online).

The course aims to facilitate a comprehensive and critical understanding of communication within healthcare and how this can be maintained through positive action at organisational and management levels. This is conceptualized as occurring within a multi-level framework that encompasses a focus on individual issues, the needs of targeted groups and the wider societal and cultural context. This course provides for the development of critical, analytical and independent thinking and aims to facilitate the skills necessary for employment, academic progression and continuing professional development.

This programme is studied part time over a period within one academic year, i.e. 8 months (September – May).

Outline of delivery

To ensure that the programme is as flexible as possible for the students, they could complete the PgCert over one academic year, 8 months (September – May). Semester 1 consists of two 15 credit points modules, Managing Communication and Leadership and Management in Healthcare Communication. The Managing Communication module will be delivered as block teaching, i.e. four full days, while Leadership and Management in Healthcare Communication is fully online. In Semester 2, there is one 30 credit point module, Public Health Communication, which is delivered as block teaching during four full days. This module includes a work-based project in a communication department within a healthcare context (12 hours, as negotiated between the student and the organisation).

Work placement / study abroad

Work Based Project is included in the module CMM741 Public Health Communication.

Career options

This programme aims to facilitate the development of skills and knowledge pertaining to communication issues within a health context, and would therefore provide development opportunities towards furthering a career in a health-related profession with a communication remit or in communication within a healthcare context.

We have updated and re-structured the course to ensure that it reflects the latest trends in contemporary theory and practice. The innovative new design incorporates a ‘Communication and Public Relations’ core with opportunities for you to specialise and study streams in advertising, political lobbying or healthcare. This means that all students will study four core modules plus two taught modules in your particular specialism. This model:

  • provides you with flexibility of choice that allows you to maximise your individual and professional needs
  • enables you to develop a critical understanding and expertise in the academic and professional bases of communication and public relations with the facility to develop such understanding in specialist areas of advertising, political lobbying or healthcare

About

This programme is a linked Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) and Master's (MSc). The PGDip comprises six modules. Full-time students will take three modules per semester begining each september and finishing the PGDip components by May the following year.

For an MSc award you will also undertake an individual dissertation (12,000-15,000 words). Each student is allocated a supervisor who will support thier individual research project.

Each module is weighted with credit points indicating the amount of student effort required. Full-time students are required to complete 60 credits per semester (1 credit point equates to approximately 10 student effort hours).

Attendance

Full-time students normally attend classes on 2 or 3 days per week. Part-time students normally attend classes on 1 or 2 days per week. The specific timetable will vary depending on your specialism. Classes are usually held during the day and full-time and part-time students share the same classes. Exact times vary, but each module generally involves 2-3 hours per week of class time that may be divided between lectures and seminars/workshops/practicals. Outside of this, you will also be expected to spend considerable time in independent study and you may also be involved in meetings with staff or with your fellow students on group projects.

This programme is similar to the MA Biomedical and Health Care Ethics, except that you don’t undertake a dissertation.

In Semester 1 you’ll develop your understanding of key concepts and approaches in the study of ethics, as well as how it applies to the biomedical and healthcare fields. You’ll study developments and debates in healthcare ethics and the ethical issues at the beginning and end of life.

You’ll build on this knowledge in the following semester and apply it to the professional context, considering issues like the carer/patient relationship, consent and the role of the conscience in professional practice. You’ll also explore questions surrounding the distribution of scarce medical resources and compulsion or coercion in cases of mental illness.

If you choose to study part-time, you’ll take fewer modules each year and study over a longer period.

Whilst some students can build their own academic awards by choosing their own menu of module options, other students will opt for a named academic award. The Framework also provides the option for students to move from their chosen named award to another award if their job or personal circumstances change and they need to alter the focus of their studies. The majority of named awards also offer students, the option of choosing at least one module, sometimes more, from across the Faculty module catalogue enabling them to shape their award more specifically to their needs.

This programme allows you to understand and explore just how much we communicate effectively and with each other and how we interact with the wider world in doing so. Communication is vital to success on an individual and organisational level and this programme gives you a multidisciplinary approach to the discipline.  You can discover and fine tune your skills in negotiation, create rapport, provide leadership and interpret various issues to interaction which prevent growth, movement or improvements within an organisation and your business relationships. This is an essential language which you can apply to just about any known business and organisation area. Professional communication can be the difference between the failure or success of projects, organisations and people management, plus how your organisation is seen by the rest of the world.  Specific business areas we look at are in healthcare, law and the energy industry in Aberdeen so that we can utilise our networks but these skills are applicable to any business discipline or institution.

You acquire skills in organisational negotiation, leadership, rapport management and interaction with a range of professional institutions and business organisations. You study a variety of intercultural communications and professional contexts to uncover the true meaning of data in language analysis for example.  The breadth of opportunities for a professional with communications expertise is immense and it can be anything from the more obvious communications, marketing and change management positions to HR, teaching, PR and crisis management.

This degree uses specially designed online teaching materials to give you an in-depth understanding of professional ethics, and what they mean for practitioners in the biomedical and healthcare sectors.

You’ll learn about the ethical issues in medicine and healthcare practice, but you’ll also be able to specialise in areas that interest you or suit your career aspirations. You’ll study topics such as ethical issues at the beginning and end of life, autonomy and psychiatry, professional issues and allocating medical resources fairly.

We’re constantly developing the course and consulting with professionals working in the field, so it’s informed by the most recent developments in practice. But you’ll be guided by active researchers with expertise in teaching ethics across medical disciplines, giving you the chance to engage with the latest academic arguments and debates.

If you don’t have a degree, you can apply for this programme and then upgrade to the MA if you progress successfully.

The programme is designed for people who’ve never studied ethics or medical ethics, although we do also have applicants who have studied philosophy before. If you’re interested in thinking about key ethical issues in a reasoned and independent way, you’ll be able to explore big questions in the biomedical and healthcare spheres with the support of the Interdisciplinary Ethics Applied Centre (IDEA).

This course is also available to study part-time and/or on campus.

Learning and teaching

There are no lectures or seminars on this programme. Instead you’ll use the University’s Virtual Learning Environment to access interactive course materials and participate in collaborative activities online. This allows you to share your experiences and insights with students from a variety of backgrounds to discover new perspectives on ethical issues. Our tutors respond to queries by email as well as contributing to the online discussion groups.

Assessment

You’ll still be assessed using essays, but we use a range of other methods to make the most of online learning. You’ll complete shorter written assignments and group projects, and you’ll also be assessed on the contributions you make to group discussions.

The unique programme introduces you to the variety of ways in which brands are developed and used, and helps you to understand how the growth of branding – in business, but also in politics, government, sport and culture – has changed the societies we live in.

What happens when the state starts to use branding techniques to communicate with its citizens?

And how does the rise of digital and social media change the relationship between brands and their publics?

What, for example, are the consequences of understanding political parties, artists or sports teams as ‘brands’?

An introduction to contemporary branding debates

The MA in Brands, Communication and Culture aims to provide you with a comprehensive understanding of the history and development of brands and branding, and their relationship to contemporary forms of communication and culture. Specifically, you should acquire an in-depth knowledge of the social, political and economic backdrop against which branding has become so important, and an understanding of the key themes and debates surrounding its development and use, including the relationship between brands and intellectual property, and the extent to which branding promotes or inhibits openness and transparency within organisations.

You will also improve your ability to think critically and creatively about contemporary communications and cultural practices. When you have completed the programme you will have at your disposal a range of tools that will enable you to analyse contemporary communications, to make judgments about their significance and value and be able to thoughtfully contribute to contemporary communications.

A unique approach to the study of brands

This MA is not a conventional branding or marketing course. Instead it offers a unique approach to the study of brands. This is reflected in the topics taught on our core modules, which include:

Modules & structure

The programme is made up of two core modules (60 credits in total), between two and four options modules (60 credits in total), and a dissertation (60 credits).

The first core module, Branding I, introduces you to contemporary definitions and theories of branding, its history and development, changes in the role of marketing, promotion and design, and their place in the global economy.

The second core module, Branding II, puts greater emphasis on contemporary themes and issues in branding, and their relationship to wider debates in society, economy and culture.

Throughout the core components of the degree, you will examine the wide range of ways in which branding is currently used, in organisations ranging from large corporations to public sector bodies, charities and other third sector organisations.

For the optional modules, you'll have an opportunity to explore some of the wider contexts for brands and branding by taking up to 60 credits of modules provided elsewhere in Media and Communications or neighbouring departments such as SociologyCultural Studies and Anthropology.

Part-time students typically take the two core modules in their first year, and the options modules plus the dissertation in their second year.

Physiology and Pathophysiology: developed to enhance the healthcare professional’s knowledge of the physiological and pathophysiological processes which, together with social and psychological phenomena, underlie health and disease.
Consultation Skills: focuses on communication and using a medical model for taking a clinical history. The consultation is a private and intimate interaction between and this module aims to challenge practice and highlight issues such as effective engagement and barriers to therapeutic communication.
Physical Examination and Diagnostics: designed to equip practitioners with skills including advanced access in general practice, community home visiting, minor illness surgeries, intermediate care and theory of undertaking minor surgery.
In semester two there is an opportunity to study from a wide menu of optional modules which can tailored to your individual interests or role in addition to the core research methodology module.

Overview

Medical law and ethics is a fascinating field of study as advances in research and new technologies shift the boundaries of medicine. New health issues are continually emerging and patient rights are increasingly taking centre stage. Complex medico-legal dilemmas are arising in healthcare practice and in the relationships between patients and healthcare professionals. You’ll find that many of the issues we cover on this course are highly topical.

Over the course of two years, you’ll explore the moral problems faced by medical and healthcare professionals, learn about issues that may raise legal liability in these areas, and reflect upon the legal, social and ethical context in which healthcare law is situated.

Our optional modules will allow you to tailor the course to your own particular interests. You’ll be able to explore these in greater depth in your Major Project, by undertaking a significant piece of independent research in your chosen topic.
