This course offers the opportunity to study for a combined Master of Science / Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (Health Visitor) qualification. Assessment

The course assessment strategy is closely aligned to the teaching and learning strategy which is designed to have: immediate professional relevance; draw on expertise-by-experience; foster active learning and be leaner-centred in approach. A distinct feature of the course is the range of assessment tasks, including those that allow you to undertake workplace relevant assessments that can have an immediate impact in practice. Examples include: written assignments ranging from reflective pieces to academic essays culminating in a service improvement project, assessed practice within your placements; and a portfolio of evidence of learning in practice and a profile of the health needs of your local practice area. The course assessments also include a timed, invigilated exam as this is an NMC requirement

Assessment tasks are designed so that you can tailor them to professional interests, experience and development needs. They are also designed so that you can rehearse ways of thinking and acting that are professionally relevant.

Course details

You develop public health practice knowledge and skills in order to work effectively with individuals, families and communities along with public health leadership skills, to enable you to contribute to the contemporary health visiting agenda.

Professional accreditation

Following successful completion of the required theoretical learning outcomes (120 credits at master’s level) and the specialist community public health nursing practice competencies (NMC 2004) you are eligible to register as a specialist community public health nurse (health visiting), and be recorded as a community prescriber on the NMC register. You continue your studies and complete a 60 credit master’s level dissertation module leading to the MSc Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (Health Visiting). This is undertaken as one year part-time or six months full-time study after Specialist Community Public Health Nursing (Health Vistor) registration with the NMC. It must be completed within five years of commencing the programme.

Introduction

This programme aims to equip nurses and midwives to develop an enhanced and applied knowledge base in Health Visiting Practice allowing you to exit with the required Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC) recordable qualification as a Specialist Community Public Health Nurse.

The programme is delivered in collaboration with NHS Health Board and local authority partners in Western Isles, Highland, Tayside and Forth Valley, combining academic teaching and practice learning throughout the programme.

On successful completion of the programme you will be able to respond to the demands of contemporary public health practice in the community and to work to influence and improve the standard of care for children, young people and their families.

Please note:

Students require a Practice Teacher to supervise and assess their placement learning. At this time in Scotland Practice Teachers are supplied by NHS Health Boards and local Authority partners. Recently Health Boards have advised that they are only able to provide this support to students that they are fully seconding onto the programme. As a result we are not in a position to recruit any independent students.

Academic requirements

All entrants to the MSc/Graduate Diploma in Early Years Practice (Health Visiting) Programmes must meet the following requirements (NMC 2004):

- Valid registration on the Professional register maintained by the NMC;
- The registrant must have developed their own knowledge, skills and competence beyond NMC registration, i.e. normally two year’s post registration experience as a registered nurse or midwife however other relevant professional experience can be considered.
- In order to protect the public the NMC registrants are required to have an up-to-date membership of the Disclosure Scotland: Protection of Vulnerable Groups scheme
- Arrangements made to have a Practice Teacher allocated to the student for the duration of the Programme (allocated by the relevant health board area following successful interview).
- Students must demonstrate the ability to study at degree level (minimum academic SCQF Level 9) (NMC 2004; Standard 5);
- Understand the programme requirements regarding length of programme;
- Support from Senior Practice Line Manager.

Structure and content

This programme contains specialist modules that ensure students gain insight into the complexities of caring for children and their families in the early years and act as change agents to facilitate improvements in care provision. The programme consists of 50% practice learning and 50% theory, as prescribed by the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

The programme can either be studied at SCQF Level 10 or Level 11 and completion of the programme will allow students to graduate with either a:

- Graduate Diploma in Early Years Practice (Health Visiting) (SCQF Level 10) or
- Masters (MSc) in Early Years Practice (Health Visiting) (SCQF Level 11)

Students who enrol on the MSc programme will have ability to exit following successful completion of the 6 core modules with the award of Post Graduate Diploma in Early Years Practice (Health Visiting) and will register with the NMC as a Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (Health Visiting).

Both programmes are available on full-time (1 year) or part-time (2 years) routes.

You will be encouraged to critically analyse and evaluate SCPHN practice with your lecturers and CPTs, and your assignments will provide a focus for analysing practice. Your CPT will be responsible for facilitating your learning, supervising your progress and assessing your competence in practice.

This course is unique in nature as you will be paid full-time (or part-time) thus your attendance at university is recorded. Sickness and absence during the course will affect your sickness and absence record. Equally punctuality at university is a important part of your professional role.

You will undertake core modules in leadership in public health, evidence-based practice, healthcare research, child protection, specialist practice and for health visiting students, nurse prescribing. School nursing students may choose a clinically focussed option after discussion with the pathway leader. Students progressing to the MSc undertake a substantial project relevant to their own area of practice.

These pathways are designed to furnish qualified nurses with the evidence to demonstrate eligibility to register their specialist practitioner status with the Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC). Course outline

You'll be prepared for a role as a Specialist Community Public Health Nurse within Health Visiting, allowing you to register your qualification with the NMC. You'll gain valuable knowledge and skills in relation to public health, evidence-based practice, leadership, change management and collaborative working. It will also develop specialist knowledge and skills in aspects such as health assessment, clinical care and case management.

We provide a balance of 50% theory and 50% practice. This will be facilitated in an area specific to Health Visiting. There will also be opportunities to gain alternative practice experience in another relevant setting during the course.

Graduate destinations

Successfully completing the course will enable you to work as a Health Visitor. You will be eligible for registration on the NMC Nursing register in your named pathway. By opting to study HPHN9001 and HPHN9002, you can apply to record this qualification as a V100 Community Practitioner Nurse Prescriber on the NMC nurse register.

Training placements/secondments within Cumbria, Lancashire or Blackpool areas are advertised each year through NHS Jobs usually in spring/early summer. You do not need to apply to the University initially; if you are successful in gaining a place through the trust then you will be asked to submit an application at that point.

You will be interviewed for selection for this programme. The interview panel may include NHS Health Trust staff, employers, mentors/practice teachers and university staff. During the interview you will be offered advice on the suitability of the award dependent on factors such as how recently you have studied, and your personal and professional development needs.

If you live further afield, you may be able to undertake the programme with us if you can organise a practice placement and secure access to a practice teacher in the relevant field of practice. Your local NHS Health Trust will be able to advise you as to whether this is possible. You may need to self-fund if your trust are unable to fund you.

If you then undertake the 60-credit SCPHN dissertation module and successfully complete a dissertation, you will graduate with an MSc award. For this, you will critically examine a key area of SCPHN theory and/or practice in health visiting or school health nursing, to develop and enhance your own practice and leadership ability. You usually submit this within a calendar year of ending the taught modules. Please note that dissertation study is not funded by the Welsh Government.

How You Will Study

This course has been designed to meet the NMC (2004) SCPHN requirements of a 50/50 ratio of theory and practice. Learning and assessment will take place both at the University and in a range of clinical environments, and all modules involve theoretical and clinical assessments of equal weighting.

Where appropriate, there are work experience opportunities that involve use of the Welsh language. The PgD course attracts Welsh Government funding for NHS staff.

If you work in Cumbria, Lancashire or Blackpool areas, you may be eligible to apply for a place on the programme funded and supported by one of the local PCTs. The PCTs advertise places on the programme each year through NHS Jobs usually in spring/early summer. We advise you to contact you local PCT and ask to speak with the manager for the specialist pathway that you are interested in, in order to express your interest and discuss opportunities.

Occasionally students self fund a place on this programme. However, you will still need to talk to the relevant manager in your local PCT in order to ask if they can provide you with a placement and a mentor/practice teacher in the relevant field of practice.

Who is it for?

This course is suitable for qualified nurses or midwives with a commitment to prevention and health promotion and evidence-based practice in a community setting.

Applicants will want to develop their practice in the sphere of district nursing, health visiting or school nursing, as well as gain an academic qualification which can lead to an MSc.

Objectives

The programme offers registered nurses and midwives an opportunity to enhance their knowledge and broaden their skills to improve health within communities. City offers the three specialist community practitioner routes in District Nursing, Health Visiting and School Nursing.

The course aims to support you to:
-Acquire a deep and systematic understanding of the professional and technical skills and knowledge of public health policy, practice, care delivery and service development.
-Develop knowledge, skills and professional competencies.
-Critically analyse social and cultural perspectives of public health, health and disease and the influence they have on judgements and decisions for practice, practice development and service delivery.
-Promote multi-agency and multi-disciplinary working in relation to public health practice.
-Critically analyse, synthesise and apply Specialist Public Health Nursing or Primary Care Nursing knowledge, policy and practice to work in different settings.
-Develop skills and knowledge to practise autonomously and organise and appraise practice and learning.
-Achieve the competency to prescribe from the community practitioner formulary for nurse prescribers.

Placements

Practice is an integral part of the programme. In the practice setting, you will work alongside a practice teacher or practice teacher and mentor from the specific sphere of practice, while completing learning activities and a practice assessment document.

You are required to undertake 15 days additional experience in an area of, or that may be of, responsibility, even if not central to the defined area of practice. This can be anywhere in the world. Past students have visited Denmark and Scotland, for example, as well as working elsewhere in London. They have worked with food banks, specialist nurses, environmental health officers and been involved in community development projects.

For the final ten weeks of the programme, you will work consistently in practice, consolidating your learning.

During your placement, you will have at least three visits from your link lecturer (who is also your personal tutor) to support learning in practice and facilitate theory- practice development.

Academic facilities

The Clinical Skills Centre at City offers excellent facilities for you to rehearse practical caring skills prior to your practice placement. You will have access to a simulated six-bed high-dependency unit (HDU) with realistic equipment including piped oxygen, call bells, medicines and emergency equipment. In addition, medium-fidelity simulators and laboratories, including a biology laboratory, allow you to rehearse skills in preparation for practice in a range of placements, including clinics and people's homes.

The School of Health Sciences is one of the first health schools in the UK to open a Technology Enabled Care Studio - City TECS. City TECS is a specially designed studio flat at our Northampton Square campus, fully equipped with the latest telehealth and telecare technologies, providing you with the unique opportunity to learn how to use the latest and future healthcare technologies while you study.

Teaching and learning

Teaching is facilitated by qualified educators, the majority of whom are registrants from the appropriate sphere of practice. In becoming a self-critical, lifelong, reflective learner, you will identify your learning needs and work towards meeting these.

Learning and teaching strategies will include formal lectures, seminars, student-led seminars, group projects, simulated practice, negotiated learning, e-learning, self-directed learning and practice-based activities.

This programme will generally include 50 organised learning days, most of which will be campus-based and 107 practice days of different sorts (supervised, alternative and consolidated). There are 57 study days when you are expected to undertake guided independent study.

As a paid employee, you are expected to attend all timetabled classes and placement learning experiences.

Teaching builds on your existing clinical experience, extending your theoretical and professional knowledge and understanding. Many sessions are shared with other LJMU community nursing programmes, enabling you to better understand and appreciate the roles of other healthcare specialists.

As a public health nurse you must be able to work flexibility and creativity, demonstrating high quality practice leadership. The programme prepares you to take responsibility for vulnerable individuals, identify healthcare needs, facilitate health-enhancing activities, safeguard health and welfare and influence health policies.

You can study full time (52 weeks) or part time (104 weeks), with modules delivered two or three days a week and clinical placements interspersing the classroom learning blocks. Theory days can be used for activities such as non-module specific sessions, masterclasses, personal study and assignment preparation.

You will be appointed a personal tutor to support and oversee your progress through the course and you will work with an experienced practitioner - your practice teacher - on work placements.

Formal teaching takes place in Tithebarn Street in the city centre campus. This vibrant location offers everything you could possibly need during your studies. The resident Avril Robarts library, for example, is open 24/7 during semesters and has computer rooms, learning spaces and on-site catering facilities.
