The MPH (HTA) is a strand of the Master in Public Health (MPH) programme for those students who wish to specialise in public health with health technology assessment. 

This multidisciplinary MPH provides firm grounding in the range of skills and disciplines essential to public health and health technology assessment. This programme will allow you to combine the benefits of completing an MPH degree with the specialism of health technology assessment and evidence-based healthcare. Health technology assessment is a rapidly expanding area, and employment prospects are good. 

The MPH (HTA) is an exit qualification from the MPH programme. Candidates access this strand by applying for the Master in Public Health programme. If you wish to study this programme to Postgraduate Diploma level then you will need to complete the taught elements of the programme but will not need to complete a dissertation.

We also offer the following Public Health programmes:

  • The Master in Public Health, designed to provide academic training to professionals currently working in, or who wish to work in, the public health field, students attend compulsory modules then choose from a wide range of approved modules.
  • The MPH (Global Health) programme. This course aimed at professionals already working in low- and middle-income countries or those aiming in the future to work in health care in such setting. It builds upon the well-established and successful Master in Public Health.
  • The MPH (Statement of Extra Accredited Learning) programme - this programme provides a broader version of the current MPH programme (230 instead of 180 credits). By being formally assessed and accredited in more modules, the MPH (SEAL) allows students to demonstrate their wider competency range.
  • An exciting new undergraduate BSc Public Health programme at Birmingham specifically designed to provide students with the academic skills and passion required for a career focused on improving the health and well-being of whole populations.

This multidisciplinary MPH provides firm grounding in the range of skills and disciplines essential to public health and health technology assessment.

This programme is for anyone who wishes to develop their career by acquiring skills in using health information and making evidence-based policy within the healthcare field. It is particularly suitable for professionals who wish to develop their skills in evidence-based healthcare and health technology assessment. This includes those working in public health, health services research (including medical statisticians, health economists and epidemiologists), or information departments in the health service, university, government or health care industry settings in the UK or abroad.

The programme will allow you to combine the benefits of completing an MPH degree with the specialism of health technology assessment and evidence-based healthcare. 

Learning and teaching

Health Technology Assessment (HTA) is the assessment of relevant evidence and knowledge on the effects and consequences of healthcare technologies. It contributes to priorities and decisions in relation to prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation. This Masters in HTA focuses on the production, critical appraisal and use of scientifically rigorous research evidence, applied to a range of health-related areas. 

Why this programme

  • Our postgraduate taught courses provide a solid grounding in all the major disciplines within the field of Health Technology Assessment. This is unique within Scotland, and is one of few such programmes worldwide.
  • Our faculty are world-class experts in their fields, who are active not only in research and teaching, but also involved in HTA decision-making at a national level (eg through NICE, SHTAG).

You’ll gain an understanding of markets, pricing and customers needed for new product development in the health technology industry.

If you’re already working or aspire to work in the field of health technology assessment, this course will give you the training you need to progress your career or gain a post as a health technology evaluator or commissioner.

This course is taught entirely online. You’ll study part-time over two to four years. You do not need a UK study visa to take this online course.

The MSc in Economic Evaluation for Health Technology Assessment (HTA) aims to further students' knowledge and understanding of basic and advanced issues in the economic evaluation of health technology assessment through high quality training in relevant theoretical and practical issues.

All applicants to this programme should apply for the Postgraduate Certificate in Health Economics for Health Care Professionals in the first instance. Both the Postgraduate Certificate and the Postgraduate Diploma in Health Economics for Health Care Professionals should be completed before progressing to the MSc in Economic Evaluation for Health Technology Assessment.

What is Covered?

The modules are organised in a similar manner to the Postgraduate Certificate and Diploma programmes in Health Economics for Health Care Professionals. Each module lasts for approximately 12 weeks and comprises six or seven individual study 'units'. Modules are weighted at 20 'credits', where one credit equates to approximately 10 hours of study time.

In addition to the three compulsory modules for the Postgraduate Certificate and the three for the Postgraduate Diploma, students taking the MSc in Economic Evaluation for Health Technology Assessment take three further modules.

Programme Details

Mounting pressure on health care budgets worldwide has focused attention on how best to organise health care systems and the spending within them. The University of York distance learning programmes in health economics allow students to gain an accredited qualification while continuing in their careers, and offer the flexibility to spread study over a period of years to match professional and personal circumstances.

We offer three programmes of study, with the aim of providing students with the skills and confidence to apply the principles of health economics within the workplace. The MPH (Global Health) degree is an internationally recognised qualification in public health. This course aimed at professionals already working in low- and middle-income countries or those aiming in the future to work in health care in such setting.

It attracts people with a wide range of professional backgrounds, from those who want a career in Public Health to those who just want to learn more about epidemiology and statistics for research or health service evaluation. It is increasingly accessed by students who have completed a primary degree in a related subject and are wondering what to do next.

This is a modular multidisciplinary programme in public health, which offers a Postgraduate Certificate (60 credits), Postgraduate Diploma (120 credits) and a Master in Public Health (180 credits). The course follows the same structure as the normal MPH but has extra compulsory modules. As well as the three core MPH modules, you will study two additional core modules:

You will also carry out a dissertation based upon research conducted on low and middle-income country health or health systems topics. These can be based in Birmingham, such as systematic reviews and data analysis of large data bases, or based upon original data collection in the field in immigrant communities living in the UK or in low and middle-income countries (either a candidates own country or where a supervisor has links). Field trip work might be covered by supervisor grants but in most cases must be supplied by the students or their sponsors as course fees do not include travel and field work expenses. Supervisors are experts in a range of internationally relevant public health topics with projects in numerous low and middle-income countries.

The MPH (Global Health) programme can be studied either full-time, part-time or over a maximum of five years by flexible learning. Overseas students may only study the MPH (Global Health) full-time. Teaching takes place in one-week blocks. The course covers many of the areas necessary for sitting the Part A examination of the Faculty of Public Health.

This award is offered within the Postgraduate Scheme in Health Technology, which aims to provide professionals in Medical Imaging, Radiotherapy, Medical Laboratory Science, Health Technology, as well as others interested in health technology, with an opportunity to develop advanced levels of knowledge and skills.

The award in Medical Imaging and Radiation Science (MIRS) is specially designed for professionals in medical imaging and radiotherapy and has the following aims.

A. Advancement in Knowledge and Skill

  • ​To provide professionals in Medical Imaging and Radiotherapy, as well as others interested in health technology, with the opportunity to develop advanced levels of knowledge and skills;
  • To develop specialists in their respective professional disciplines and enhance their career paths;
  • To broaden students' exposure to a wider field of health science and technology to enable them to cope with the ever-changing demands of work;
  • To provide a laboratory environment for testing problems encountered at work;
  • To equip students with an advanced knowledge base in a chosen area of specialisation in medical imaging or radiotherapy to enable them to meet the changing needs of their disciplines and contribute to the development of medical imaging or radiation oncology practice in Hong Kong; and

Characteristics

The Medical Imaging and Radiation Science award offers channels for specialisation and the broadening of knowledge for professionals in medical imaging and radiotherapy. It will appeal to students who are eager to become specialists or managers in their areas of practice. Clinical experience and practice in medical imaging and radiotherapy are integrated into the curriculum to encourage more reflective observation and active experimentation.

Programme Structure

To be eligible for the MSc in Medical Imaging and Radiation Science (MScMIRS), students are required to complete 30 credits:

Assessment

The course puts assessment at the heart of learning by using clinical scenarios to facilitate problem-solving, critical analysis and evidence-based care. The scenarios act as both the focus for learning and assessment thus embedding assessment within the learning process.

Each of the 6 modules has the same assessment format. Due to the online nature of the course, students are expected to login and participate in the course regularly throughout the module (ideally on a daily basis).

Students use the skills gained during the lectures to engage with the different activities (see below).

Teaching Methods

Each module has the same format. Using an online platform and one tutor per 10-15 students, the self-directed distance learning is guided by tutor stimulated discussion based on clinically rich case scenarios. Group projects are undertaken alongside independent projects. Reflective practice is recorded in a reflective portfolio to help students consider how the learning can be translated into everyday work and practice. Teaching starts with 1 day of introductory lectures. Students may attend these lectures in the UK (Glyntaff campus, University of South Wales). The lecture series are delivered by the faculty and tutors, they are a pre-course organiser, giving students the tools required to undertake the online course such as:

Scientific writing.
Levels of evidence.
Harvard referencing.
Reflective writing.

The lectures series give an opportunity to meet face to face with tutors/other students prior to the online course.

MSc Health Economic

The MSc Health Economics course aims to create professionals who can independently access information and use the information to critically assess, evaluate and disseminate the evidence base related to Health Economics medicine. The online masters in Health Economics will enable more health care professionals to have the required knowledge to treat patients. It will develop problem solving and clinical skills together with preparing students to take a leadership role in Health Economics.

Entry to the 1 year MSc in Health Economics will require the successful completion of the Postgraduate Diploma in Health Economics (120 credits) either from the University of South Wales or from another UK University.

Distance Learning

Due to a global, national and local focus on public health developments, the Master of Public Health award has increased in popularity over the last few years. The distance learning route allows overseas students to undertake a University of Wolverhampton degree from their own country. The course is also suitable for those unable to travel into University for on-campus courses whether this is due to child-care difficulties, travel issues or general lack of time to enter traditional modules of study.

The MPH has been delivered for over a decade at the University and recruits around 60 students per year over two intakes. Career choices encompass many disciplines including roles in public health, health promotion, health statistics, epidemiology, clinical governance, health care research, health technology assessment and public health nursing, where you will find that a Masters-level qualification is increasingly required.

Our laboratories are well-equipped to support students in their studies, research and dissertations. Our specialised equipment includes a flow cytometer, cell culture facilities; basic and advanced instruments for molecular biology research (including thermal cyclers, DNA sequencers, real-time PCR systems and an automatic mutation detection system), microplate systems for ELISA work, HPLC, FPLC, tissue processors, automatic cell analysers, a preparative ultracentrifuge and an automated biochemical analyser.

Recognition

This modular multidisciplinary programme in public health is designed to provide academic training to professionals currently working in, or who wish to work in, the public health field. 

As well as practising clinicians, the course may be of considerable value for those involved (or thinking about becoming involved) in senior management in health services, as it covers most aspects of population health including epidemiology, statistics, health economics and health service management. Its modular nature allows the flexibility for participants to shape the programme to fit their needs in a way that ensures maximum utility with minimum disruption. A wider range of skills and expertise than can be covered in the standard MPH is often requested by employers and individuals who want to be knowledgeable about a wider range of topic areas.

This programme provides a broader version of the current MPHprogramme. To acquire and MPH (SEAL), students need to complete 170 credits of taught modules and complete a 60 credit dissertation, as opposed to the usual 120 credits of taught modules.   • An exciting new undergraduate BSc Public Health programme at Birmingham specifically designed to provide students with the academic skills and passion required for a career focused on improving the health and well-being of whole populations. 

Course details

As well as practising clinicians, the course may be of considerable value for you if you are involved (or thinking about becoming involved) in senior management in health services, as it covers most aspects of population health including epidemiology, statistics, health economics and health service management.

Its modular nature allows the flexibility for you to shape the programme to fit your needs in a way that ensures maximum utility with minimum disruption. Moreover, the course is delivered in an environment that combines the pragmatism and ‘can do’ spirit of a modern dynamic health service with the rigour, discipline, and high standards of a premier Russell Group University. The course covers many of the areas necessary for sitting the Part A examination of the Faculty of Public Health. 

You can study the MPH (Seal) programme either full-time, part-time or up to five years by flexible learning. Overseas students may only study the MPH (Seal) full-time. Teaching takes place in one-week blocks. 

The course curriculum has been amended to enable you to take 230 credits rather than the usual 180 (as far as is practical) without compromising your choice of modules.

Learning and teaching

As a Birmingham student, you will be joining the academic elite and will have the privilege of learning from world-leading experts, as well as your peers. From the outset you will be encouraged to become an independent and self-motivated learner. We want you to be challenged and will encourage you to think for yourself. 

Teaching takes place in one-week blocks, and you will participate in a range of teaching styles such as lectures, small group tutorials, presentations, peer group learning, self-study etc. 

You will have access to a comprehensive support system that will assist and encourage you, including personal tutors and welfare tutors who can help with both academic and welfare issues.
